We had rhubarb in our small garden when I was growing up, we used to go out and pick a stalk and eat it if we were hungry when playing outside. Our strain was really durable and overwintered for 15 years or so until we sold the place. At the end of the year we used to go to the Berry U-Pick and then Mom would make strawberry-rhubarb pie. The combination was amazing. Something I think you should do. You can actually use any sweet berry to offset the sourness of the raw rhubarb.
Love love love your videos. My grandma swore by potash for tomatoes... and she grew some whoppers in her life time. Also her other tip was to use the water from the kitchen, laundry and bathroom (grey water). Keep up the great work... best wishes from the other end of the world, Australia

I finally finished planting all my starts this past weekend. I discovered last year that the brassica family does much better where I am in the fall so I will wait for those this year. I'm looking forward to watching your garden grow again this year!
Who doesn't love seeing and hearing the sandhill cranes come back in the spring. Swans and Canada geese too. Bandit might be my spirit animal - he looks soooo happy to get back into the water. Arielle...in over 50 years in Alaska I have yet to manage to kill any of my rhubarb, even though I have tried! With your skill, I am sure you will have gorgeous plants. You both inspire me every year, all year -
I do in my greenhouse exactly what you mentioned when watering your beds. I shovel snow on all my beds so it melts and hydrates all the planting beds. And snow is one of the best sources of natural nitrogen which also helps the soil.
How much snow? We got a geodesic dome greenhouse late last July. This is our first full season trying to grow in it, and I haven’t heard anything about that before. We live in 4b
Cannot get enough of this channel, I've just been rewatching old videos after work everyday. I'm so happy you guys do what you do, your both very inspiring.
Rhubarb is a wonderful addition to your garden and will last for years to come. And then you can make rhubarb breads, preserves, chutneys, and sauces. Yum yum!
Old trick is putting a dead fish under your tomato plants. Can confirm it works really well here in new england. Keep a head or tail after each trip in the freezer and add them a little deeper below the plants as you plant them. Try it with a pike head under one plant for fun.
Yes they have a shorter challenging growing season , but their garden yields extraordinary amount of crops..large bounty and large vegetables.. Enough to feed them for the year until harvest the following year.. They've been doing this a long time they got it down to a science
I'm in Wisconsin and our growing season in the west central part of the state is comparable to this part of Alaska. Almost mid-may and we are still getting close to freezing over night.
😆😆😆 My husband & I laughed so hard at that! Brought back too many memories of testing electric fences. When you hear the snap you know it was a good one! Sorry Eric, but it was funny
Been watching since I was a sophomore. I'm about to graduate hs now and still can't get enough of your videos! Can't wait to see the garden set up in full bloom this year.
Hi, you are right in being exited over the Lovage plant (here in Sweden it is called Libbsticka) - it is fantastic. It tastes like broth, and you only need like 3 leaves in a big pot of stew. The advantage is that you get the taste of broth without the salt. I have two of these in my garden. I use a glass (jam glass) with a lid, put the leaves in and put the glass in the freezer. This way their strong smell don`t get to the other foods in there. You can of course also dry them. I do the same with chives, only use the scissor to make them into small bits, freeze them and they melt and taste like fresh ones. Wishing you luck with this year`s harvest, and must say I have been very impressed with your garden these previous years! Greetings from Sweden, from me and Martin, my husband.
It''s not so bad getting rained out on our cash crop planting when you guys make a big video like this one! Talk about two peas in a pod, you two are made for each other. My heart would sing with joy to see a little one running around the homestead though. Hey, if you ever need to borrow one, we have 7 now!
"We could put snow in the tunnel in the winter so it could melt down..." My father always did that in the greenhouse the years we got snow (we don't get snow every year over here (Belgium)) . He says that that is very good for the soil, because it's a slow proces to get moisture in the soil.
I grew up loving rhubarb because of my grandmother. She made rhubarb jam with "orange slices" candy mixed in. Orange slices are an orange flavored gum-drop candy in the shape of an orange slice and sugar coated. She cut them into 1/2" chunks and mixed them into the rhubarb jam just before pouring it into the canning jars. It added sweet to the tartness of the rhubarb. Another favorite was strawberry rhubarb pie. Again, it mixed tartness with sweet. I hope yours grows well.
@@DiT555 I never thought about rhubarb lemonade! Mine is up and ready, I'll have to look up how to do that, I almost always have lemonade and iced tea on hand. Thanks for the 💡 idea!
I kill every plant I have but I watch fascinated how you plan out, formulate, fertilize, and schedule your crops. You have many green fingers my friend. Eric is an awesome partner to have in building, fixing, watering, consulting, etc. Gardening is a lot of work! Can’t wait. Thanks for this video.
The crane sound is very familiar! We live in Florida and they are all over our development and I love it. We have a family that comes around and the baby’s name is Henry! I have a small garden, but hope to have more space to grow more vegis!
Yes, your rhubarb will be super happy with all the amendments. It really does well for me here in VT, zone 4, often -20 or so. I don't mulch mine, the snow is a wonderful insulator actually. I throw a couple shovels of compost on it in the spring when it first pokes up (often through frozen soil!) and it's off and running. I love it, it's sour, and does well with other fruit like strawberries, apples, and cherries. Last summer, I made a bunch of cherry-rhubarb compote and poured it over yogurt and ice-cream..YUM!! I'm thinking you're going to love it, with your kitchen creativity! I love your garden SOOO much, it's completely inspiring me to think outside the box. Thank you, guys!
"Image having a ranch". Yeah that hit close to home. We bought a 22 acre ranch last November and my goal is to get is as self sustainable as I can... after I fix all the fencing!
I learned years ago, growing up on the farm to carry a stripped ended, piece of copper wire, bent into a U in my pocket to test electric fences. We couldn't always hear the click of the power, so if you just rest that on the line, it will create a quick spark, and you won't get jolted. I have to say Eric, you gave me a good giggle when you did that! I was thinking the whole time, "No, don't do it!!" :) Love watching you two work together, you are a great team and your approach is great.
That is something very special you have there. A crane visited you last year and this year again.. you might have become a new roosting place for these majestic birds during their trek. It is something very special, cherish it!
Flocks of Cranes have been seen crossing the Himalayan on their way to nesting grounds or return to pass the winter time in mellower grounds. Just know it's special seeing a wild crane this close!

I loved hearing you guys discussing using snow to water the high tunnel during the winter! Fantastic idea. I try to pile my snow up so that it will melt downhill on my fruit trees! I already have to plow/shovel, so might as well have it help me headed into a dry summer in Colorado. Thanks for another great video.
You have the electric fence for the zombies and can grow your own food. You guys can survive anything!! Plus the guard dogs. I think your cat though would step up to the challenge! This was so informative. Can't wait for the next one!
You guys are back. So good to your video again. I truely get inspired by watching your posts, loving nature, Alaska, peaceful life and self sufficiency. Simply Beautiful. God Bless You!
Is it just me? Lol I just realized that they both have the same name as The Little Mermaid Ariel and Prince Eric, well Arielle spells her name differently but still, coincidence!
Me, too. I kept thinking "Why not put some of the snow in the high tunnel?" I know they don't want to handle snow anymore then they have to, but it would be for a good cause.
Just a little note for you as far as tomatoes are concerned, when I have drab tasting toms, I will add some baking soda to the soil to lower the pH level in the soil, makes the tomatoes sweeter. Also letting the roots run deeper by holding back on the water, the toms go into a water saving mode and thus making the tomatoes conserve the sugars. Harvest before watering, and the tomatoes will have a much better taste.
You two are such a great team , you work in harmony together, I’m always so happy when you post a new video and I also rewatch your older videos, love everything you do ❤️

This 82-year-old man coming to you from Ct.USA just i love watching your videos, thank you
I do in my greenhouse exactly what you mentioned when watering your beds.
I absolutely love how you take the dogs on all your trips, even to go get the topsoil! You guys are awesome!!
Long time subcriber from finland. 👍🏻. We have so much the same climate and nature. Almost the same. Respect your work out there🙏
Cannot get enough of this channel, I've just been rewatching old videos after work everyday. I'm so happy you guys do what you do, your both very inspiring.
I planted rhubarb last year and it died off in a cold snap we got after planting. Lo and behold it is back this year.
Rhubarb is a wonderful addition to your garden and will last for years to come. And then you can make rhubarb breads, preserves, chutneys, and sauces. Yum yum!
I cant imagine growing in your climate! Seems like such a different world than here in North Carolina. It must take the greenest of thumbs
I've always heard that the way to a woman's heart was with worms. But I didn't believe it until now
It's because worms burrow and are small enough to go between ribs.
As much as I love watching you two, the dogs, especially Beau, is the star of the show!
Old trick is putting a dead fish under your tomato plants. Can confirm it works really well here in new england. Keep a head or tail after each trip in the freezer and add them a little deeper below the plants as you plant them. Try it with a pike head under one plant for fun.
WOW! 😮 Alaska is much harder to grow crops in than so much of the world. 🏞️ You guys are champs!
Yes they have a shorter challenging growing season , but their garden yields extraordinary amount of crops..large bounty and large vegetables.. Enough to feed them for the year until harvest the following year..
They've been doing this a long time they got it down to a science
No, the season is short, but extra hours of sunlight grow plants much faster and larger than what you expect closer to the equator.
@@sharongypsydove6080 Yes this is why I love their videos! They are honestly beautiful people who share so much wisdom
I'm in Wisconsin and our growing season in the west central part of the state is comparable to this part of Alaska. Almost mid-may and we are still getting close to freezing over night.
@@katydidiy I live in Northern Alberta. same thing here. We have frost in the morning and a good chance of snow haha.
You guys have done a great job on your channel, definitely one of the best on utube.
Let's all get together and sent this man an amp tester...😉
😆😆😆 My husband & I laughed so hard at that! Brought back too many memories of testing electric fences. When you hear the snap you know it was a good one! Sorry Eric, but it was funny
No!!!! The shock is my favorite part of starting the garden every year!! Haha! 😜
Lmao I was so curious when he said test it out,, I thought he was gonna throw something on it or show us some cool trick to see how it works!😆
Really, really enjoyed spending more time with you in today's video. Good stuff!!
I needed a good laugh today lol. The electric fence was so funny. Enjoy your videos. If we were younger we would love to live there.
You should store a few 55 gallon barrrls with water in the high tunnel as they work as a heat sink.
It''s not so bad getting rained out on our cash crop planting when you guys make a big video like this one! Talk about two peas in a pod, you two are made for each other. My heart would sing with joy to see a little one running around the homestead though. Hey, if you ever need to borrow one, we have 7 now!
You guys have quickly become one of my favorite channels, simple yet entertaining.
Love from a Moroccan guy in the Netherlands
Rhubarb makes a great lemonade, so refreshing and yum ! we used to eat it raw, just peel and deep into sugar.
@@DiT555 I never thought about rhubarb lemonade! Mine is up and ready, I'll have to look up how to do that, I almost always have lemonade and iced tea on hand. Thanks for the 💡 idea!
I have posted a short recepie for lemonade. It required cooking though buy completely worth it. Enjoy!
Love all the detailed info.
You should get a kite spool for your poly wire when you put it away this season.
You two are absolutely amaaaazzzzing. I am following you from South Africa and love your videos, you give meaning to life and are such an inspiration. Well done with all you do. Lovely to see how much you love each other
Everyone like this video! Ariel and Eric probably put so much effort into it :)
Should have named the dogs and cat “Sebastian,” “Scuttle,” and “Flounder”
@@ap8409 still can
Yes, I thought the same thing!
It has been mentioned a couple of times in other videos comment section ahah
@@rodrigogoncalves2626 thank you sooo much for informing
I love being able to see the tomato roots through the clear plastic cups!
I was waiting for the snow tip coz I kept thinking "There's so much snow, just melt it in the tunnel!"
I give em apple juice 😂 has always worked for me tbh
I saw Sandhill Cranes in my back yard this morning chirping away. The sound they make is really loud.
the channel is growing, you will be at 500k in no time :)
You two are such a great team , you work in harmony together, I’m always so happy when you post a new video and I also rewatch your older videos, love everything you do ❤️
All of us grandkids used to play with our grandparents electric fence.
