Just an American girl here from 1981. I was so blown away by this band and Chrissie Hynde. I thought she broke all stereotypes of what a woman should be in rockand I admired her so much for that. So many good songs, such a good band, they still amaze me today.
Well. I didn't to blab on, but I will. The Pretenders came to the University of Virginia in 1981. Not a lot of people attended the concert; UVa was still stuck in early '60's music, due to its largely preppy population at the time. But you can damn straight I was there. The next day, my phone rings. A sorority sister, who was a student leader on grounds and knew I was a Pretenders freak, said "hey, you wanna drive the Pretenders to the airport?" Mind you, I had never driven on a highway yet in my life. I wasn't going to let THAT stop me. When I got to the hotel. Chrissie was standing on the curb, just glaring at me (I was wearing a ruffled blouse and long blonde curled hair - I wasn't a Hells Kitchen NYC punk girl.) The original bassist and guitarist got in the car the school gave me, and I was awestruck the whole way. I don't know how I got there. I hate to say, but it's funny now; they smelled so bad - no shower obviously for a few days, a lot of drinking and smoking, and after playing Charlottesville, I think they just wanted to get the hell out of there ASAP. I'll never forget it though. Chrissie - it was an honor, and I wish the guys were still alive. A couple of years later, everyone was talking about what a "genius" and a "feminist" Madonna was, and she was, in her own pop tart way, but Chrissie was the real deal: she left OH for London and formed and led the band, she wrote the songs, she could really play and didn't give a f*ck what the white male status quo in rock thought. And she didn't have to dress and dance suggestively to sell her music and herself.
Didn't care if her mascara ran. She just laid it all on the line and was all about the music. If you want to be a rock star, be a rock star. If you want to be a model, don't pretend (no pun intended) to be a rock star. That is why she is respected in the music world...👍😉
Arguably their greatest recording ever, it's brilliantly constructed and a perfect fit for the sensousness and longing in her voice, She comes across as both defiant, hot and vulnerable at the same time, and yes she looks amazing here! The fact that half the band would be gone only a year after this was recorded adds an extra touch of the bittersweet to it; there was so much ahead that this classic line-up never got a chance to try out.
One of the best lineups in Rock. Chrissie's voice is so smooth it's almost hypnotic and James, Farndon and Martin were just amazing. This was some band and would have loved to see how far the four of them could have gone. I love Stevie Nicks but Chrissie's voice just kills me every time. Thanks for all the awesome music.
Agreed 100% with nyjoe702. What makes them unique though is Chrissie Hynde's approach to melody. I say unique but as I was listening to Talk of the Town for the 18,000th time, some of her lines reminded me bit of the girl groups from the 60s like the Ronettes, even the Shangri-Las. Having said all that, how could a group that looked the way they did do so well? Martin and Pete's barnets would not have been out of place in Showaddywaddy. James looks like he's wearing a Pete Ham busby yet in amongst these three strange-looking lads is Neve Campbell singing in English but sounding like a French chanteuse. Out of this world...
Maybe part of the reason ie the lyrics. Stevie Nicks considered herself a poet; so there is always this queasy feeling for the listener of missing the point. Chrissie just penned straight forward lyrics, whose purpose was to create a great song.
Chrissy was a sweetie. Probably one of the sexiest voices in R&R. Saw them at the Limelight NYC. Crowd asked for more and she said, "we only have 1 album but we'll play it agan for you." So gracious. Gosh, that was soooo long ago...and just yesterday.
This video holds up really well. Compared to other videos from this era which all seem so painfully dated, so much a product of trends at the time that look and sound ridiculous now. The Pretenders were their own unique thing then and still are now.
When Chrissie Hynde says "Oh but it's hard too live by the rules, I never could and still never do," that's like the definitive new wave statement. Like the punk rock princess that she was. Also a definitive statement, along with "you've changed your place in this world." You see the hero of "Talk of the Town" is herself.
I thought so too - the battle cry for all female punkers. Well, maybe new wavers. But I really liked "Not me baby I'm too precious so fuck off." That's punk.
"Oh, but two guys died, guitarist and bassist, and the the woman in the red (vinyl?) jacket on the album cover is so boss." Whatever New Wave was she was it. I think. I couldn't pull off the look, that's all I knew. A late teenager away from home for the first time. Loud and young, watching mesmerized as Susie Parker and her friend sing out "not me baby I'm too precious F off"...I get a weird feeling when I hear "Stop Your Sobbing." The memories it evokes..New Wave was colorful, punk rock wasn't. The Pretenders were so tight, all four of them so critical for their sound. The first record? that fucking bass, their chemistry, Chrissie H ynde harmonizing with herself on "Lovers of Today?" That voice- ethereal, angelic, dangerous......Yeah I had a crush on Crissie and Debbie Harry. Wanted to be like the guy "you call the shots" she was singing about on "Talk of the Town."
For me, this is the quintessential Pretenders song and video. Affecting lyrics and melody, great playing by the band and what has to be one of the very best Chrissie Hynde vocal performances (and she has the best voice in rock). Cool graphic design backdrop, high-contrast effect and everyone looks great. Pete Farndon and Martin Chambers both look so effortlessly cool. It's a perfect moment in time for this lineup's sadly short-lived history.

Back in the 80's when The Pretenders were becoming really big, I had no idea what they looked like. They were just voices on the radio. I'm so glad I re-discovered them here. What a great video
Between this song and "Kid", Chrissie's place in history is assured. Oh...and "Brass in Pocket" too! When I first heard that one, it sent me scurrying to the record store to buy the single.
I saw the Pretenders open for the Who in 1980 and I remember being astonished. I'd never seen anything like Chrissie Hynde and Martin Chambers must have broken 200 drumsticks in that show. He's playing drums, suddenly one of the sticks disappears into a cloud of splinters, and by the next beat he's got another drum stick in his hand. Saw the Pretenders again in 1983. Both times Chrissie's vocals were just totally pure. Not a girl who needs auto tune. I have never heard another vocalist do vibrato like she does.
Met them behind the Greek in Berkley during the Learning To Crawl tour. They were so friendly, especially Martin. Really nice people, that rocked hard. Pretenders influence on me was huge.
Has anyone else noticed that Chrissie is one of the most prolific song writers to walk the earth?! Even the latest album "Hate for Sale" shows she still has serious skills. No band or artist records one of their best albums 40 years after their formation. Try to name one.
There are a handful of Pretenders songs that fit this category. Miracle. That's all you can say about them. This song. Kid. Show Me. A few others. People throw around the tag of 'genius.' But Chrissie really does have it. It doesn't matter how many times you listen to these songs. Your jaw still drops to the floor.

I love the change in bassline at 2.09. Simple but Pete change the whole couplet with one note while JHS is still playing the same part as the first couplet.
One of the defining sounds of the 80's. As a guitar hobbyist, that chorus pedal effect on the guitar is one of the defining guitar effects of the 80's too.
Chrissie is so enchanting to watch. She is so sultry and that voice is so haunting. Her presence is so commanding. I was mesmerized and blown away the first time I heard her and the way she played a strat or an Les Paul or SG with that sexy commanding voice of hers. Her presence commanded attention from one viewing and listening to her. Yea, that's the best part
I love the change in bassline at 2.09. Simple but Pete change the whole couplet with one note while JHS is still playing the same part as the first couplet.
@@p.molenaar5868 Yes, fantastic transition. The snare ignites the new. There are quiet a few nice things going on throughout.
I like the ting ting ting ting. Perfect add.
They were so amazing live, saw them in Portland back in the day.
Saw them in Milwaukee in maybe 1980. About 300 people in the venue. So cool!!!
One of the all-time greatest bands. And that voice..... This is why this is one of my favorite songs.
Played on MTV'S launch day - August 1-1981.. I remember playing it on the Times Square soundtrack before owning the pretenders II album.
One of the defining sounds of the 80's. As a guitar hobbyist, that chorus pedal effect on the guitar is one of the defining guitar effects of the 80's too.
Johnny Marr certainly thought so...
@@philipmartin5757 He seems quite busy these days & his guitar is sounding lush in a stereo setup.
MR ROBINSON? 💋
@@carolinegodden4364 Mrs Robinson, are you trying to seduce me?
This is the first Pretenders song I can remember hearing on MTV as a kid. I had forgotten how good this line up was. Classic song.
Amazing, sublime... and they do it live bang-on too
Chrissie is so enchanting to watch. She is so sultry and that voice is so haunting. Her presence is so commanding. I was mesmerized and blown away the first time I heard her and the way she played a strat or an Les Paul or SG with that sexy commanding voice of hers. Her presence commanded attention from one viewing and listening to her. I was smitten with her from the first time I ad the pleasure to listen to her She is a true icon and a pioneer in the world of rock and roll and she is a gift to all of us who love music.
She prepared us for St. Vincent.
I was 22 years old and Chrissie was the sexiest woman in rock and roll. Nothing or no one has ever changed my mind.
Great band and song! Chrissie is ultimate! Strong, confident incredibly talented, swag and that voice!
No other band rocked so hard yet so sensitively at the same time. A gift from the Gods.
The mighty high brow ....its all stored away to make me the man i am today and i thank you
ill never forget seeing this group on totp when Brass in Pocket was top of the charts. THe black leather pants and mohair jumper. This song is the one i love . Although i was onlly 8 , it brings back so much and inspires even now. The first two albums are out of this world. Watching this, seeing Farndon and Honeyman-Scott. WIthin a short time they would be gone. What a legacy though! English Rose and jealous dogs should have been singles. Incredible
RIP Pete and James...they changed rock forever !!!
I bought this when it first came out. Loved it then, love it even more now. Thanks Chrissie and co for the wonderful music xx
"Ooh, it's hard to live by the rules: I never could and still never do!" One of the greatest lines in any song. Bad ass rock Goddess!
Chrissie has the coolest persona of any rocker. Love her voice.
Chrissy looks AMAZING. They all look do happy and carefree.
Is it ok to say...I love you Chrissie! hah. Was just watching Back in the Chain Gang earlier this evening with my wife and referred to Chrissie as "my girlfriend". The wife laughed and said...I can totally see that hah.
I am fascinated by Pretenders, it feels like subconsciously somewhere and once these tunes hovered in earthly space, I am from Kazakhstan, I am 55.
That bass is so unreal...❤️
Always liked the Pretenders, especially this lineup. Their sound was so different from other bands I'd heard at the time.
Still...1 of the greatest songs ever written
" Chrissie Hynde " One Of The Most " Seductive " Vocalists Of Aĺl Time !! Anyone blessed with a voice like This was bound too succeed and " Thank Goodness " that she did !! X From Adrian 1965
Chrissie does a great Anthony Newley impression at 1:01 with her now, ow, ow, ow.
definitely my 80s crush 😍😍😍
Still :)
I love you Chrissie...
Their greatest song, IMHO. Heard them all and they're beautiful, but this one stands out after all these decades. ♥
Admire the personality of Chrissy's voice the total vibe, of the band ultra prime
One of my favorite songs, a sad youth song, a song of loneliness and loss 😢
Chrissie's voice is just right for this - anguish rather than anger.
I've made the comment on the Tattoed Love Boys video, but I'll repeat myself on this video as well... the first two Pretenders albums IN THEIR ENTIRETY... START TO FINISH... are pure PLATINUM.
Pretenders II is a pretty damn good sophmore release.
She's an Amazing songwriter, the rhythms. So cheeky and alive, pulsing and playful. She's got catchy based harmonies, but loses nothing .
