In today's video, coach Casey Hill shares his thoughts on what coaches look for in players during tryouts and what you can do to prepare for your own tryouts. It's very common for players to go into tryouts not knowing exactly what they are being evaluated on and what qualities it is that they should have developed before stepping out on that floor. Coach Hill wanted to share his opinions with you and help you be your best when trying out for your team.

Special thanks to the Santa Cruz Warriors and the players for inviting us to their gym to make these videos for you guys.

Part 2!!! :)
Soon!
***** Cool, can't wait :)
I'm 18 and I never had the chance to join on a team before and my university's tryout is starting next week. Any tips? I admit that I'm a beginner in the game.
Try out tommorow wish me luckk
A "SPECIAL GOOD LUCK TO YOU" Aaron. Let us know how it went.
now i know .. that coach wants to see good defense and ballghandling jumpshots 100% effort..i think i can pass in my try out this tuesday ..
I go to all open gyms and shoot around every day I'm 4"6 in 7th grade and the couch likes hight but there is no one tall in my grade I usually score off of steals and get ton so fast breaks but he dosnt like me for some reason any tips
Get closer to the coach and try to find out why he doesn't like you. Our guess is that he doesn't dislike you at all. Give him some solid reasons to like "your game" instead of liking or disliking you as a person! Review our tryout videos and good luck.
Try out next week 😂😂 I need to practice HARD just like KG! No Restday! Goodluck for me btw I'm gr.8 5'3 😂😂😂
GOOD LUCK!!!!
Tryouts for my school were like 3 months ago
Tryouts for teams happen all year round and if we missed yours this year, there's always the next time and team.
Hey Shot Science.
I'm pretty unlike most people who follow your channel. I only started following basketball about 3 years ago and only really started playing this year at 19 years old this past summer. I'm not looking to be competitive at any level but would like to improve. Any advice on how to aproach it at a pretty old age for a begginer?
Actually, we get a good number of responses from players that are getting started a bit later, so don't let that discourage you. Some people don't pick up a ball until their 30's or 40's!
As for how to improve, we suggest developing your all-around game. You should be able to do all aspects of the game well, which will make you a versatile member of a team and make it much tougher for the other team to shut you down. To develop that kind of game, you need to have a comprehensive workout plan that involves (1) Diligent practice that you use to dial in your mechanics and technique (2) Game-speed -intensity practice to prepare you for actual game situations and (3) actual game experience whether that be pickup games, school games, etc. If you build using those three methods, you'll be on the right track. Then you must realize that it will all take consistent hard work to really polish and develop your game. Hopefully our videos can help you in that pursuit. Good luck!
I Can Play Basketball Ive Just Never Played On A Team. What Drills Should I Know How To Do For Tryouts ?

Can I just get a reply about registration for individual team tryout??
i hv been to tryouts for my university for 2 years. Im able to play at their level...but there are tons of people showing up, they never pick me...i want it so bad and i was really frustrated back then :( Next year is my final year I wish i can make it!
We hope so too! Keep working and dreaming!!!!
Is there conditioning at tryouts? you have to run a mile in 7.45 to make the team. but other then that is there?
+jessica miller We would guess that the Mile run would be the only conditioning item, but every coach is a little different. You will be fine in any event.
Shot Science,
Hello, I'm Rey from NY city. This is perfect because It just occurred to me that I can actually try out for the NBA D-League. I am currently playing for the New Born Kings from ABCHoopsNYC.Com. I believe my talents to be a good on court coach as well as a team mate are A+. If you guys can post draw an approach I can follow to go about entering the D-League process.
I understand many colleges have their teams already set up, this is why it's been rough for me during tryouts because out of so many players, I think I need eyes on me all the time and be scaled or beaten for a position because out of so many players I'm only 5'7 but i can light up the scoreboard.
Thank you for your time and your videos Shot Science and I appreciate the guidance!
Happy Holidays,
Rey
Well, hopefully our next few videos in the series will help you. It would be hard for us to give you solid advice without actually seeing you play or knowing who you are. Good luck!
I will go tryout in my 10th grade, im in 9th grade. Is that late to go on college basketball team?
Not really
if i dont play freshmen year but sophmore year could i still a have a chance to go to college
+Adrian Almodovar Absolutely! Just get to work today!!!
I didn't make the team this year xc
Any tips ?
Stay tuned for Coach Hill's video on just that subject! Coming up soon!
What do i do? I have tryouts this monday through thursday And my jumpshot is a little bad
coaches are not gonna care about your jump shot. that's how player gets cut from a team. offense isn't everything. only screens tho. when you make it then you can start taking jump shots but still play good at defense and stuff. when you are at tryouts play like it's your last. even if you are the shortest player. don't be intimidated by the big guys. be really aggressive. not like flagrant foul but like pressure defense. think about it this way. coaches will also like it when you put pressure on your opponent. other than that just think you are the best player on the court. that helps me a lots makes me perform better.
+PiePuppy Well PP, We don't believe that your jump shot has no meaning when you are trying to make a team. The game is determined by who makes the most points. So the "J" would be important as are all the other things that you list.
If I didn't try out for my middle school team but make it to a high school team, is my chance to go farther with basketball lower?
+TheAwkwardTurtleGamer ATG, if you are a "Gamer" then it should not make any difference as coaches are looking for players who can play!
+Shot Science Basketball Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. Although now I practice too much to play games, it's worth it tho.
Does Casey's brother coach a high school team in Dallas
Not sure. Will ask him that question.
Can you tryout at 18
Try outs are in two days! Quite nervous cause the coach judges us based on our height! >.> Wonder what he'll think of me since im 5'6
nice comment but wtf is that name? good luck
Hey Go, we would bet that your coach does not judge just on height. Bring something from this video and another of ours as well. Coaches do look for tall players, BUT they also need ball handlers, great defenders, great attitudes and manny more things. Our video is titled "MAKE THE TEAM! let us know how it goes.
I'm about to be an 11th grader. I want to try out, is it too late for me? To be able to go to a college basketball team? I'm 16, I'm only 5"5. But I'm realllyy good. I don't know if I'll be able to join the team because of my height. Most of the people who will try out will be like 6 feet.
Try out! There's no harm in it! Also, about the scholarships, it really does depend. I know some players that were drafted this year have only played basketball for like 5 years. If you have the skill set and the want anything is possible! I'm a freshman and I'm trying out for my school team... My schools small so I'll more than likely get a spot
is there a team in or close to new york?
Do not know about NY, however if you Google Basketball AAU or Travel Teams you will find some.
thank you coach
I had tryouts yesterday and I got cut :( I thought I did really good, I only missed 2 layups
Isaiah, unfortunately, there are many aspects of "Try-Outs" hat have nothing to do with scoring. Please review our video on YT entitled "Make the Team!" Be sure to prep and get ready for next year!
if only this video came out a month ago when there were tryouts
There are tryouts year-round and this was as early as we could put out this video.
#truth
My high school tryout is in 3 hours😰😰, wish me luck
Elmo World gl
I just finished my second/last day of tryouts.... They're putting up the list for who can go to practice tomorrow morning, I'm so nervous... 😰😰
I made first cuts but we have practice today and they might still cut people so I am very nervous... wish me luck
We hope you make it Elmo. Let us know.
i ask somthing deaf can tryout
made the jv team not surprisingly
Awesome Kermit! Now let's make sure the coach never regrets his decision!
Who has tryouts tommorow i do and im so nervous.
Aaron Zhen me
Aaron, relax and go for it! Good luck.
I think Santa Cruz Warriors is The team , Japeth Aguilar Played for he is the first filipino to compete in the d league unfortunately he didnt landed a spot
Maybe next year! You never know when it can happen.
Would have been useful if it was three Weeks ago
Could used this info a little early lol
It still applies to players that are already on the team or that didn't make it this year. Knowing what your coach expects of you is some powerful information!
Can anyone try out for the d league?
dashawn young I believe so! Last year Santa Warriors had a guy that was about 45 yr.old.
That's great because I'm really good and I'm a junior in high school but my coach just doesn't want me and I'm 6'6 16 years old and I'm probably gonna grown to be 6'10 so that's great news BTW I did play for my high school when I was a freshmen
dashawn young good luck buddy, I know it's a late reply but really. 6'6 in 11th grade is amazing. I'm 6'2 in 12th grade and most players on my schools team are between 5'9 and 6'3
DJ Sedesse same here senior 6'3 never picked to play but not giving up yet!
Oh I just grew a inch I'm 6'7 now 🙌🙌
Dressing white will make it quite alright.
...............
Lol , His name is Kasey Hill , not Casey Hill
I think you have Coach Hill confused with the guy that played for the Florida Gators ;-)
Holy shit you responded
I've heard that NBA D-League tryouts are a scam.
They have like a hundred guys in there with about two coaches. There's no way two coaches can watch hundred players effectively.
I've also heard that it is a good way for them to make quick cash.
You've heard wrong. We'll have another video with a more in-depth look at the tryouts, but there were about 30 guys trying out in front of at least 6 coaches and even more front office people. And it would definitely cost them much more in dollars to put on the event than any money they make back from the $100 tryout fee (which they put in place to make sure the person trying out isn't just doing it to do it).
And how could it be a scam if every once and a while a guy is picked up and put on a team? Coach Hill shared some great instances where a guy missed his opportunity coming out of college and was able to go to a D League tryout, make the team, and then work his way up to an NBA team. Don't believe everything you hear...
***** It was actually from a video made by a guy with a lot of credibility. Look up "Dre Baldwin D League" he shared his experience on how there were about two coaches and 100 guys.
IWantMyVisionBack well, we can only speak to what we've experience and seen. In the several different tryouts we've seen and from the experiences shared with us from some of our players, they are legitimate tryouts for a professional team with the occasional NBA-caliber player mixed in with a lot of normal guys. In fact, one of the players in this video ended up making the SC Warriors (Kiwi Gardner) and is playing for them right now. Of course it is an "open" tryout, which means that essentially anyone can show up, which is only fair (and reason for the small fee).
But it's pretty obvious which players are able to play at which level of basketball. There's a bunch of guys who think they deserve a shot, but just are not at that level of play. Very few guys can actually play at the Development League level, let alone in the NBA. A good tryout might have ONE player that could actually make it.
There are two tiers of D-League tryouts: the open tryouts as described by Dre Baldwin and others, in which teams do collect money from participants and players have to showcase something truly special in order to catch the coaches' eye; and then the invitation-only tryouts, in which the quality of play is much higher, and each player receives equal scrutiny from a full group of coaches.
Sam Epstein
That may be the case but it doesn't take away from the fact that these tryouts aren't in the best interest of the players.
Coaches say always the same bullshit
Thanks for the information. I just want to know when I should register for the individual team tryouts(bakers jam) in the fall of 2014.
