I have been playing basketball for about 5 years now to stay in shape. My ball handling skills were never that good until I started to watch this channels videos. I just came back from the court and your lessons work. "Thanks, Shot Science"
Go to our YT Channel and look for Our vertical jump videos and you will also find our "Vertical Handbook" which is ta three month daily program. Our players report really solid gains using this program.
It is a good idea to be able to shoot both the overhand and the underhand layups. Continue to practice the underhand because it comes in handy when you are attacking the rim hard.
Guys I am a really good stealer, I can steal the ball easily and run on the fast break by myself all alone, but I go so fast that I miss the layup due to the fact that I put so much power since I am going really fast, what should I do? Thanks, and keep up the great vids!
Use your two step to focus and balance your self and steady yourself and gives you time to position your self ... I use to have the same problem ... use your two step to slow yourself down and practice finger rolls
You can decelerate doing your run-up, so that you can put the ball right where you need with a soft touch. Coach Rock from I love basketball TV talks about it.
Hi Coach Tom if i do this Lay up 101 Alone it's really work for me but if i have an opponent in my front the defender always slap the ball if i started to Finish. He's slapping the ball if the ball is on the front of my body.
Work on getting the ball on your off-side hip for he shot. If you keep getting blocked, possibly this is a shot that you shouldn't be taking. A jump stop and finish often has the defender over run your shot. Jump Stop at about 4-5 feet from the hoop, up fake, then finish.
Thanks Coach Tom but i'm not always getting blocked but the defender is like Andre Igoudala he always slap the ball and if he hit my hand accidentally the Refs always don't call a foul that's why i need to know how to protect the ball even tho the defender is very physical player
Thanks for your suggestion i always do that but if i do my second step or what we call THE LAUNCH FOOT that's the timing where the defender slap the ball to my hand.
Those of you complaining about going to fast to the rim and having the ball bounce off the backboard should remember that you have to take two steps first and glide on the third thus releasing the ball before you land or it will be considered a travel.
Thanks for this, Coach! I've been playing basketball for 2 years now and I'm trying to make my high school's varsity team this year as a senior, and my major weakness has always been the layup, especially the underhand method. Now I can actually practice the right way to do it. Thanks again!
Thank you so much, last year i was a forward and made only one basket the whole season, and it was a free throw. Now ask i watched your videos i make about 28 points per game, and break about 2 ankles per game! Thank you so much Shot Science Basketball, you just earned a subscriber!
I always occasionally come back to these videos even though I've seen them and applied them to my game. It is fun to watch and sometime I might have missed something.
The answer to your question can be found in our Layup videos. Check them out. Working on the left hand is just a matter of doing it! Use the same approach except with the opposite foot on the left side.
This is great. I played for many years and never had much trouble when I was younger but now that I'm older and coming back to the game I've lost the touch and always missed layups on a break and under the ring. It's getting embarrassing so this will definitely help. I think if you keep doing drills it will certainly increase the accuracy and muscle memory of doing the layup (and shooting) Thanks, guys!
Shot Science, well done, undoubtedly you have helped thousands of people improve their basketball including mine. I especially like this video because I have learned how to defend myself against blocks while going for a lay-up. THANK YOU!
shot science, thank you for all the video updates! i've been following you guys for nearly a year and it has been an awesome year we just won our silver medal last week, not a gold but still a good start those are thanks to the responses!
Thanks coach!!! This tutorial went good on me, I started to rarely miss lay ups when I'm clear, in my last scrimmage, fastbreaks went good, the "sweet spots" really worked. Thanks coach, I'm Elementary, I'm 5'3", normally on a 9'5" or 10' baskets. Thanks and keep up the good work!
Thanks for the tips coach, with my lack of scoring power my speed was only used for defence but after your video I'm able to score more than I though I could.
this really helps. i have realized, as i do the overhand layup, that a lot of times even when i hit the corner of the box, my shot rolls out and it's really frustrating. ill have to work on that underhand
ive been having trouble with finger rolls.... my coach said just to stick with shooting it off the backboard while you drive but its alot more natural to go with the finger roll. Any tips on how to work on the finger roll?
Oh! thats how you do the layup! I was so close to the rim like i was right above it when i release the ball from my hand. I thought it was me getting rusty from not playing for a week. Now i understand why im missing my layups...
Shot science, I am relying to your tutorial videos and I really appreciate that it is free. I am requesting to your team to upload tutorials about positions like "what should a center do?" or "what to do when ur a small forward?"
The other players size is of no consequence! Choose which one you want to use. If they are bigger they are usually looking for the block and the under-hand shot works best!
We can only guess unless you get us a v ideo. We suppose that you are starting the shot from a low arm position and flinging the ball toward the basket. If so, change it so that you are reaching UPWARD and then releasing the ball as you see in our videos.
practice is the answer to your questions! you must experience how to adjust for the speed of the run-up and we also recommend that you use an "underhand layup!" It will be much softer.
thank you very much I used to be a bench warmer but I started watching your videos and training a lot and now the starting sg it took me one year but it is worth it thankss
Thank you so much coach, thats just what I needed. Ive been playing basketball since high school and now in college and have always been made fun of cause of my dreadful layups... I think that underhand approach would really help me!
coach. i love using the underhand method. i feel that i have more control and as a result have a soft touch. but people say i shouldnt do it because it could easily get blocked and that i should go up strong with the over hand
Thanks for the video I've almost always missed my layups and never understand why. Now I know why I have been missing the layups. It was because I always did over hand layups and not under hands. Thanks again for the lesson!
Excellent job putting this video together! However, please note that around the 1:51 mark in the video, the player travels as he picks up his pivot foot prior to releasing the ball on his dribble.
Change to using under-hand layups to take the power off the ball! When you shoot over-hand the hand transfers the run-up speed to the back of the ball.
@ShotScience Yeah i have been practicing it everyday, at basketball practice and on my own time, i have seen improvements. But if i am on a fast break, i am going to finish with my right hand for now, because i am not satisfied with my left hand finishing yet. Thank you and God bless!
i dont really know how to play basketball well, but ive decided to take a rish and try out for my basketball team at school (try outs arent for two weeks) and my friend told me that you basically ust need to do a layup good and so this helps! thanks:)
This could be very true. We recommend that you work on your lower body (legs) and develop more explosiveness. You can achieve this through our Vertical Jump Program. It focus's on this area and you get the extra reward of a better vertical.
@SpeedyX51 This is what I do. Just put on alot of layers (make sure you can move your arms). And just go out and shoot, after awhile you will start to warm up and it won't feel as cold. You could try wearing gloves, if you can shoot in the cold and wind with gloves on and layers of clothes, you can shoot in a warm gym with a t-shirt and shorts. I used to do this when I was in Calgary and it was snowing at like -20C.
Sorry Eric, we do not have a video on this topic, but we would probably make it a series of videos to keep it short and sweet! Thanks so much for your VERY NICE comments. It is really appreciated so much. BTW, we hope you will "Spread the Word!" Thanks again.
ABSOLUTELY RECOMMEND using the underhand layup. It's not about your size, but how and why you use the underhand. It takes much of the speed off the ball so the ball is soft.
Great tips! Just started playing Basketball casually, since i'm front the UK the local cage near my park hoop is horrible and does not even have string but still! ill try these tips on it
It doesn't matter which hand is your strong hand, really. You want to lay-in with your outside hand depending on which side of the basket you are on. If you're on the right side of the rim, you should use your right hand; left side, use your left. Then you want to make sure you use the footwork we explain in the video to jump off of your inside foot. Hope that helps!
Hey Coach, great tutorial on layups. But one question though, how do we spin the ball when hitting the backboard. Should there be a smooth back spin or do we drive it head on without any spin?
HEY COACH BELIEVE IT OR NOT I PLAY CENTER AND I ALWAYS WANTED TO BE A GREAT OUTSIDE SHOOTER I WATCHED ONE OF YOUR VIDEOS AND A FEW OTHERS I SAW THAT I HAD BEEN HOLDING THE BALL ON MY PALM NOW I CAN SHOOT BETTER THAN EVER THANKS BUT I AM STILL GOING TO PRACTICE
Thanks for another great video. I was wondering about the best line to run for the layup? Do you think it is better to run the line so that the head passes directly under the basket or about a foot to the left or right which is under the space between the basket and the backboard? The former would offer more space and so the chance to move the ball away from the defender but at a potential cost of a slightly more difficult angle to release the ball from (out to the side of the body).
Shot science, do you recommend the under hand layup for a guard because my coach always said to do the overhand because its harder to block and when your driving in you would always prefer to score on rather than get blocked by the big guys.
Eli, Glad we could offer something to help you and your game. This please us a great deal.
how if my layup didnt release high enough to hit the sweet spot because im only5'4
Darren Khor sorry I'm late, but you can do it at any height.
I have been playing basketball for about 5 years now to stay in shape. My ball handling skills were never that good until I started to watch this channels videos. I just came back from the court and your lessons work. "Thanks, Shot Science"
thnx because of this video i made all my layups even with my left and people were suprized thanks again
+Kevin Aluka Glad we could give you a tip or two to help your game.
me too
We are really pleased that we were able to help you and your game. Keep workin on it!
ugh i always choke on wide open layups.
hahaha . Dont worry . You'll get better
Don't worry lay ups are actually the most missed shots in the nba just always practice them it always good to practice layups whenever practicing
+iLLuSioN tX no...
Its probably because ur not slowing down
Same here, lost to a friend that I usually beat. I shot like 10 wide open layups and missed them all
We are really pleased for you Angela. This makes us feel really good to have helped you and your game.
Thank you so much for this video. Basketball tryouts are starting at my high school and im center so i need to do layups and get rebounds. Im 15, 6"3
Does anyone have any tips to increase my vertical so i can possibly dunk or do better layups? I can almost touch the rim. Im 5 inches off.
Good luck to you in your tryouts. Let us know how they go for you.
Squats
***** Can you please link me to some of your videos about increasing your vertical
Go to our YT Channel and look for Our vertical jump videos and you will also find our "Vertical Handbook" which is ta three month daily program. Our players report really solid gains using this program.

We highly recommend that you use an "underhand" layup as it takes a lot of run-up speed off the basketball.
Use your two step to focus and balance your self and steady yourself and gives you time to position your self ... I use to have the same problem ... use your two step to slow yourself down and practice finger rolls
bruh slow down, unless LeBron is chasing you
You can decelerate doing your run-up, so that you can put the ball right where you need with a soft touch. Coach Rock from I love basketball TV talks about it.
Thanks so much for your very nice comment and we hope you will be and remain a strong supporter of your coach.

See our videos "Finishes at the Rim!"
after you pick up your dribble try to hold the ball like a football player it keeps strong defenders from slapping it away in the lane
Thanks for your suggestion i always do that but if i do my second step or what we call THE LAUNCH FOOT that's the timing where the defender slap the ball to my hand.
You're right about the Mikan Drill. Underhand layups must be practiced going straight in to the basket!
Those of you complaining about going to fast to the rim and having the ball bounce off the backboard should remember that you have to take two steps first and glide on the third thus releasing the ball before you land or it will be considered a travel.
What????????
lol
good guy shot science

Jason Zhang stop with the lies 😂😂😂😂
This helped me & my team sooo much because we were missing layups on fastbreaks, but now, we always make them. Thank you so much! :)
Thanks so much Jevon. We really appreciate your comment. That makes our day!
Thanks so much for your support. We greatly appreciate it!
You are a genius.I don't know why you make these free videos on youtube but god bless you coach!

I am working on my California Teaching Credentail. Your videos are really helping me to make the connections for the CSET exam. Thanks!
Thanks so much Will. We really appreciate your comment.
Thanks so much and we are very pleased that you find them helpful. Thanks again.
The sweet spot is the best target for your succes on the shot AND yes, fully extend the arm.
Thanks for the tips coach, with my lack of scoring power my speed was only used for defence but after your video I'm able to score more than I though I could.
Probably need to learn to do this shot straight away as well. It begins with practice!
Thanks ShotScience. These Layup Finishing helped me. Makes me improve my skills on shooting
Thanks for the tips, I used to never make lay ups but now I've gotten better at them by a lot because of your advice. Your the best!
Thanks Shot Science Basketball , all your post helped on basketball training and i get an award at 3 on 3 basketball contest , THANK YOU
this really helps. i have realized, as i do the overhand layup, that a lot of times even when i hit the corner of the box, my shot rolls out and it's really frustrating. ill have to work on that underhand
All the help you need is contained in the layup videos.
I have a very consistent and reliable shot from three and midrange because of this channel! I now start on my varsity team
How cool is that???? Congratulations and we are pleased that we can help.
ive been having trouble with finger rolls.... my coach said just to stick with shooting it off the backboard while you drive but its alot more natural to go with the finger roll. Any tips on how to work on the finger roll?
The sweet spot was just what I needed, knowing where to throw the ball finished my lay-ups practice.
You bet. We are pleased that we could offer some help.

"Pounding the ball" on the pick-up dribble is good!
Thanks for the video I've almost always missed my layups and never understand why. Now I know why I have been missing the layups. It was because I always did over hand layups and not under hands. Thanks again for the lesson!
SWEET!!! Glad we could offer you some help.
Thanx again! I felt a lot more confident and I was able to make more shots. Btw, the perfect shooting form helped too
Thanks and i really appreciate that u found time to awnser my question.
Glad we could offer you some things that will work for you.
SWEET!! We are pleased that you are getting something out of the video. Keep workin to get better!
Excellent job putting this video together! However, please note that around the 1:51 mark in the video, the player travels as he picks up his pivot foot prior to releasing the ball on his dribble.
chris sherkel It is not a travel, the player bring a ball to a rest on the 2nd step, thus making it not a travel.
Change to using under-hand layups to take the power off the ball! When you shoot over-hand the hand transfers the run-up speed to the back of the ball.
Index and second fingers are good!

Woah This Video Really Helps... Im making some basic lay up practice. and it really works..... thanks keep up the good work... thanks coach
Hey coach, do you have a video on how to get more ball control with your off hand when going full speed to the basket?
Soon. We are working on two right now.
Thanks Coach, these lay-ups will surely help me in games.
+Milton Gremio Great to hear Milton. Glad we could help.
Hey Coach, great tutorial on layups. But one question though, how do we spin the ball when hitting the backboard. Should there be a smooth back spin or do we drive it head on without any spin?
Good to hear!
This is a good video thanks. I was wondering could you do a video on the spin layup if you heard of it.

Thanks These videos are making my Offense at the top of the game so I can become the greatest of All Time in Basketball
Cameron Tomblin Glad we could help Cameron.
