In 2012, Tyler The Creator was blasted online (what else is new?) regarding an RIP tweet to the Columbine School Massacre shooters. He then wrote the song "Pigs" released two years later in his sophomore album. The song gives intriguing and potent insight into the epidemic in and of itself, and what we can do on an individual level to help contribute to positive change.

I started this channel because I love talking about music (specifically hip hop) and given that the genre seems to be going downhill, I want to be part of the community that preserves the expectation of great music and dissecting what makes a beautiful record. Dealing with a lack of friends to discuss these matters with, I hoped to start my own community that loves music just as I do, as well as to provide a unique perspective as a follower of Christ that also appreciates this community. I appreciate everyone who watches and I am truly happy to see anybody comment their thoughts on a project I talk about.

Around the last sentiment you gave felt like a kind of dismissal of guns in the problems of school shootings, while i do agree that people and how they are treated are a root to the problem that surrounds school shootings and we should be taking with more care like with the examples you gave at the end to help them, however you have to acknowledge that guns are another root of the issue because without them then there would be no such thing as school shootings. I think while we should look towards a way on figuring out what drives people to do them and ways to prevent someone from falling down that path, we shouldn't dismiss the accessibility of guns and the use of them to commit the act of school shootings.

I’m getting a lot of comments like this, so this is what I’ll say: I was dismissive (I think that was astutely described as for how I wanted to come off there) not because I don’t think action via gun laws could be productive - but because I think the debate surrounding school shootings gets funneled into a discussion about guns because it keeps things political. The polarized culture of the United States has gone away from using politics as a means of helping people and turned it into a way to be right and superior. This is an outdated, unproductive, and destructive mindset. So, when I am trying to turn heads away from that conversation, it is not to say I don’t believe a conversation there COULD create change, but because I think the debate in and of itself is not rooted in creating a better life for others (like the one Tyler wants to start), but is about asserting X and Y’s dominant opinion over the inferior (from their perspective) A and B. I really appreciate you guys thinking about this stuff critically and asking about it, and that is my perspective!

Tyler never “glorified” rape. He talked about a subject that most people don’t want to talk about because they’re scared to even bring it up. He was discussing intrusive thoughts via use of a character he created for those older albums, an alternate, darker version of himself that almost everyone has inside of us to a degree, that we don’t allow to take control. He’s allowing emotions and frustrations buried in his unconscious flow out into the music. It’s reflective of the state of his life and his emotions at the time.

People just don't know how to really truly love one another. I used to know a kid that was so lonely depressed and distressed that his favorite quote was " I hate life id rather fuckin di3,but not mine,I'd rather homicide over suicide" people strayed away from him because he's was weird..but he just needed a friend and some TLC tender love and care.
I sat with him and just struck a conversation and let him unload his mind. It wasn't easy for him to actually trust me,he thought I was just trying to bully him. But after some time he understood that I just wanted to be around him bc I cared about what he had to say. We discussed many things..music, sexuality, art, growth, lifecycles, science, religion..and a lot of Fight Club, the conversations I had with him are the most meaningful conversations I've ever had with anyone. He opened up about how he was planning to do something very bad at our neighborhood grocery store, but he's said "I was going to start gathering the materials for my plan but then you started harassing me with friendship and I stopped thinking about the whole grocery list and just wanted to listen to Nickelback with you bc no on else likes them anymore" I laughed bc I got nervous and didn't know what to say.
I guess my point is this kind of thinking can happen to ANYONE and we need to take a closer look at all tragedies not just suicid3..when someone goes on a riot spree we need to approach them with the same delicateness as other tragedies.
I like what you said about gun laws..you're absolutely right it's not about who has them. It's about our social climate and how people feel in society esp the young ones? Good video m8

@@xenoza02 that's almost exactly my point. Firearms ARE very easy to get (in the US). Legally and illegally. So it doesn't matter who is allowed to have one or not bc if someone wants them they will get them. The guns arent the problem. I've never seen a M16 just stand up on its own and start shooting itself. The problem is ignoring mental health issues as if they will go away if society turns a blind eye. Then we get people that are upset and feeling unseen. Those people get a hold of a gun from their local gas station and then.. tragedy strikes.
I know that ANYONE can commit a horrible mass murd3r, but I also think adolescence have a higher probability because of their developing bodies and psyche. Maybe a annual mental health eval for people 18 below would help recognize the troubled kids faster.

@@elliotstname2709 that's a classic one, growing feelings and then acting like a maniac. I'm gonna say something really controversial but sometimes I'm not so sure if many mentally ill people even deserve to live, like a lot of them just go through life causing damage, hurting others and also themselves in the process. I've dealt with so many people like this, dated one and honestly? I've developed a small hate towards the mentally ill, they didn't choose to be that way but at this point I see them as a walking danger you know? It doesn't help that many of these problems are also genetic, so now they can spread their disease even further into the future and create more miserable people.
Really controversial take from my part but after constantly dealing with people like this, you kinda just want them to disappear and you start seeing how bad a lot of them really are unconsciously.

I'm not from the US, so seeing all these school shooting incidents from the outside is truly shocking, but even more confusing. What could possibly create a wave of young murderers? And what is the solution to this issue? Is there even a solution in the first place? It's definetely hard for me to feel sympathy for a killer of any kind, but Tyler's (and your's) is an interesting perspective on this subject.
This reminded me of a song by two spanish rappers, Porta and Santaflow, 'voces en mi interior', where they depict the story of a bullied kid (portrayed by Santaflow) who gives into the voices inside his mind (portrayed by Porta) that tell him to set his classroom on fire and kill his classmates. I believe this song sparked little to no controversy tho, maybe because it isn't a sensitive subject over in spain, or at least not at that time, perhaps people didn't perceive the song as a messege in favor of murderers like in Pigs case. idk, I just thought I'd mention that.
Hopefully these incidents will come to an end someday. Great video

It's USA. The gun laws are fucked. In Finland we have super strict law, where if you have any gun (even simple pistol) any officer/other goverment personel can come into your house at any time to check that the gun is in a safe or in the same designated and agreed on place. For example if the gun is agreed to be in a safety locker, but the officer finds it on your bed, they can take your gun permission out for rest of your life. Also you need to have military service done before getting even a permission. I think in America they take guns too lightly and as an everyday object, while in other countries like Finland, you rarely ever even see people with guns (we hate when people come into our house uninvited lol)

Theres online bullying etc, apart from that theres also issues that exist in their own lives that make the internet their escape, and if their escape from reality is filled with hatred, it further perpetuates the impulsive nature that young kids have with violence, if u live a life full of hate, ur gonna be quite hateful too. The narrative of gunlaws being a root issue is so sloppy and lazy, cause even if we banned guns and any weapon, it doesnt end the impulsive nature and anger that kids have. Where I live, the enforcement of the law may not be as strict as finland's, but many people desist from owning guns despite feeling unsafe in their homes because they feel they can become a danger to themselves. You are never safe around a firearm, no matter where it is

When i met him bro was always on his phone using shit like 4 chan n shi hella he was hella edgy too. he would spend 10s of hours every week to looking at gore vids and he would show people in the class i was in. We reported him hella times to the teachers and office but they never did anything besides take him to the counselor. i also remember he was huge on guns he would on stuff like offer up to look at guns for sell. And i remember the last day i saw him he told some of us in our group he was talking about how he could hurt someone and not feel anything and shit like that and he was talking about school shooters and he explained a story. on how if he would shoot up a school he would block the main exist and lure people out. we were all freaked out and told on him last thing i heard from the teachers is he was put in a hospital. Everyone who talks about school shootings never understand why they happen or just blame guns and call it a day. Understanding that when you have nothing to lose and hatred is the only thing you really have you're going to do something with it that no one is going to like. "The child who is not embraced by the village will burn it down to feel its warmth."

I'm all for anti bullying measures and improved mental health services, but gun control IS the root of the issue. Tons of countries, such as the UK and Ireland, are doing a pretty terrible job when it comes to mental health services for youth, and yet mass shootings are incredibly rare. I myself live in Ireland, where mental health services are considered inadequate and far behind other EU countries, but school shootings are a non-issue because of how stringent our gun laws are (licenses are required that only can be obtained for very specific purposes, like hunting or target shooting, and you have to receive approval from the police to obtain one). Acting incredulous as to why people would want to talk about gun control when school shootings occur is just unreasonable.

I also want to note how the 3rd verse’s first line is also in reference that after Columbine, they never looked at their social lives until years after. Instead, they opted to try to blame anything. Doom, Marilyn Manson, Television. They never looked at the reality. I understand the reality because when I was 14 I thought about it. These kids were hurting and they had nobody to turn to, nobody willing to listen. Nobody understood their pain. So they decided to MAKE them understand. I’m not defending them but I’m showing their mindset. They had to hurt the way they hurt.

  • @playmate-e6f
    @playmate-e6f Рік тому +4

the issue with solving mass shootings is that its not possible to solve from the root. the root of the problem is mass shootings are caused by either angry people (as in columbine) or people who enjoy watching others suffer. (as in sandy hook, parkland, and Uvalde) that's not something that is fixable. you cant force people to feel empathy if they don't, so where were at now is at least trying to find a way to limit the damage these people can do, sense there isnt anyway to stop them from wanting to do the damage. that's why Americas poor gun control is the perfect breeding grounds for mass shootings. our capitalistic greed of wanting materials leads us to be angry when its taken away, because now we have less stuff, so gun control essentially cant work until people feel so unsafe they no longer care about material possessions. then mass shootings will stop because you wont be able to kill as Meany people in such a short amount of time.
also the reason why people are mad about "pigs" is because art is viewed by the general public as a mockery of its subject matter. that why art is treated with un-importance is pop culture, and artists are viewed as either pretentious assholes or idiotic nobodies. so when people hear that someone (intentionally, mind you. "pumped up kicks" for example, while culturally viewed in the context of a school shooting, was intended to be an allegory about popularity by the band that made it. so its not viewed as distasteful.) made a song about a school shooting, it comes off as insensitive and cruel.

reducing the problem to just bullying is just as dumb. america DOES have a gun problem and gun control should also be in peoples minds when these kids have access to weapons that easily. there's a reason why this is a topic that's only a thing in the US and everyone looks at you all crazy for it.
why shouldn't y'all talk about gun laws and instead about "banning social media" when so many of these massacres have nothing to do with that at all. so many of these massacres are hate crimes or have victims with absolutely no relation to the shooter's life, like sandy hook. how is this "loving one another" mentality gonna prevent a neo-nazi from shooting a church full of black people? a gay club?. so many of these people lack empathy for human lives yet they can buy something that can take them away with so much ease with barely any problems, how is that not a gun issue as well?
