So true! What prompted me to make this was that on a forum recently, someone was asking after suggestions for why his coolant was going down but he could find no apparent leak. At least eight others responded that he must have a cracked cylinder head. So, I encouraged him to replace his rad cap for less than a tenner. It's over a week ago and I've heard nothing, so I'm assuming 'no news, is good news'. Most faults are caused by something simple
@@CycloneCyd How quickly can the coolant levels go down with a bad reservoir cap? Mine goes down like half an inch within a week with just 1 or 2 hours of daily drive.
First check the cap is properly tightened up. A simple check for this issue is, when the car has been driven, switch it off. After a few minutes, very carefully, using a rag to stop any possible scalding, unscrew the cap a little, if it hisses then there is pressure indicating no leak. No hiss means there is a leak. Again, be extremely careful as there is a high risk of scalding which with care can easily be avoided.
I know I'm late to the party but this is absolute sound and good advice. Sometimes the cap loses its ability to properly seal and retain proper pressures even if the cap appears to be undamaged and completely intact.

Well. I've tried so many things, even took it to the Citroën dealer. They said it is probably water pump and timing belt problem, but still no guarantee. So then finally I took it to another garage. They said they changed the thermostat housing and probably 2 hoses which carry the coolant. After that it is slightly better than before but still not fixed properly. @alukochu my cars had a new water pump and Cambelt my garage keep saying it's air in the system but after 3 months it's taking 2.5 litres of coolant so I'm really not sure? I've just ordered a new coolant cap to see if that makes it stop going down it's starting to do my head in keep popping the bonnet to check coolant 🤣
And funny you should say that mine has had a new thermostat fitted as the other wasn't working so what you said about the pipes is making me think now, I've not see any leaks anywhere checked everywhere even checked tye oil for coolant there is nothing

You can rent a coolant pressure tester kit from your local autoparts store and test to see if the cap can hold the pressure that it is rated for. Helps you to get into the habit of properly diagnosing the issue before firing off the parts canon.

but if the cap is faulty surely you won't be losing litres of coolant every 10 miles? This is what I have and no smoke. I have now disabled turbocharger ( 2.0 tdci 2009)by unplugging vacuum line coming to the control valve so now the coolant iis going away at a much slower rate.
One way you could find out if it's coming out of the cap is to tie an empty soda bottle so the overflow goes into it. It'll then collect any coolant that comes out of the overflow.
I've got another: engine oil in the coolant reservoir (lucky I caught it soon) and no smoke coming the pipe. local mechanic: it's the oil cooler. me: uh? ok. my colleagues and family: blasphemy! It's the head gasket! You fool, get rid of the car! me: Nope. Result: oil cooler internal puncture, complete and correct year new oil cooler, 60€. Also the mechanic is doing things that I can't do because of a lack of garage/backyard: bunch of gaskets and o-rings, water pump plus thermostat, rear suspension bushings, timing chain kit, balance chain kit and an air hose for the turbo, the contact area was cooked and broke away, got a DO88 replacement 😁
This is a #shorts thus not possible to go through every possible scenario. However with a faulty cooler you get oil in the coolant and coolant in the oil, both of which you would be able to see. The point about this video is that there is no obvious fault. You're correct though, yours is not an uncommon problem. Usually caused by not changing the coolant regularly and thus the cooler corrodes internally and breaks down under oil pressure. There is a spring in the cap to regulate the pressure. Not changing the coolant can also allow this spring to corrode, thus the cap can no longer hold the pressure and coolant escapes.

Radiator cap
but if the cap is faulty surely you won't be losing litres of coolant every 10 miles?
This is what I have and no smoke. I have now disabled turbocharger ( 2.0 tdci 2009)by unplugging vacuum line coming to the control valve so now the coolant iis going away at a much slower rate.
One way you could find out if it's coming out of the cap is to tie an empty soda bottle so the overflow goes into it. It'll then collect any coolant that comes out of the overflow.
If not change the coolant tank £20 euro parts mine was that!
I've got another:
engine oil in the coolant reservoir (lucky I caught it soon) and no smoke coming the pipe.
local mechanic: it's the oil cooler.
me: uh? ok.
my colleagues and family: blasphemy! It's the head gasket! You fool, get rid of the car!
me: Nope.
Result: oil cooler internal puncture, complete and correct year new oil cooler, 60€.
Also the mechanic is doing things that I can't do because of a lack of garage/backyard:
bunch of gaskets and o-rings, water pump plus thermostat, rear suspension bushings, timing chain kit, balance chain kit and an air hose for the turbo, the contact area was cooked and broke away, got a DO88 replacement 😁
@@CycloneCyd 1 year later! So please what's the solution?
@@kennyrobert9785 huh? A new cap. Always try a new cap first.
I need help if anybody help solve this or is normal,so I changed my cap already but issue is idk if is normal however my coolant is at little below min lvl with cap on when car is on but when I take the capo off the coolant goes back to almost max lvl is this normal ?
Have same problem did you solve ?
What if my Coolant hose are hard
A mechanic told me $110 to fix the coolant coming out of the radiator, I didn’t know it was just to get a new cap 😂
Good tip. I have the same issue with the coolant going empty but when i take the cap off the coolant si back up (when the engine is warm). I replaced the cap but its the same.
The coolant is not leaking or anything, when is coming back is at max.
So for me it didnt work.
You have air in the system
Have the same issue did you fix?
To simple and cheap my issues always cost $$$
