Cutting the broken wire a little shorter will make space for the crimp connector, so that it wont bulge out of the cable when done. Also there are similar connectors with low melting point solder in them, when heated with a hot air gun, while the tube is shrinking, the solder also melts and makes a soldered connection, no crimping is needed. The water proof glue is the same with these too.
And one "dad trick"; If you wrap some electrical tape on various places of your perfectly good extension cords, they will look damaged and repaired and not get stolen if you forget them outside. :-)

@uncletimmy4784 The dad trick is for neighbors or regular passer by people. A shiny new extension cord attracts attention, a patched old one doesn't.

Self amalgamating tape would be better for the outside once it’s joined, it is more weather resistant, water can travel a long way up a cable due to capillary action.

I discovered self amalgamating tape when I installed a replacement TV aerial, and it's been up for 10 years + with no issues from water ingress; that tape is magic!

Controversy over a simple electrical cable fix. --shocking--

Wouldn't it be better to insert both ends of the cut wire into the butt-crimp before crimping it closed?

I would have made that cable into 2 extensions, much safer,
An electrician like me would wonder what was under the tape and wouldn't trust it
I've seen too may extensions with taped joints that are only twisted together

    Noooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A bad instructional video.
Cut the cable and fit a plug and socket.
You are compromising the strength and durability of the lead if you us joiners like those.
Are those joiners rated for the current and voltage of the lead.
Do not use a lighter, you have no control of where the heat goes.
Black electrical tape will not protect the join.
Here in Australia you have basically committed a breach of the electrical code.
That lead will now FAIL a PAT test, just in the first part of the test, OBSERVATION.
Yes get a new lead, and don't do that!!!!

At work I would cut the cable and use connectors to make two shorter cables as you suggest.
At home, especially on a budget, the crimp will work fine IMO. It's not perfect, as you point out.
Another thought, I'm more on your side if the hot or neutral would have been compromised.

Please read the description of the video. For those that are not confident I offer a simple solution: buy a new one. Seems like that option is for you :)

"Are those joiners rated for the current and voltage of the lead."
The current and voltage of the ground/earth lead?
