We have a 20 foot extension cord and my hubby has had to repair it too. Gosh, we've had it for 20 years and it's been out in the rain and it's been fine. It does work if the extension cord is not going to be moved around. Typically an extension cord is dragged around and used eventually causing the wire nuts to come loose. wire nuts are for electrical wires that are stationary not being
dragged around. Electrical tape, butt connectors and shrinking tubes are typically used for electrical cords.
I was going to say the same thing. I used wire nuts the first time I repaired a cord on an extension that got pulled around for an electric mower, electric edger, and electric blower. A longer lasting fix was to solder the wires.
I lo❤️ve this video. I cut my extension cord just about every time I trim my hedges. Can be costly. I was going to take it to an electrical shop for repair and then I saw this video. Saves $$$. Thank you so much! Love the staggering cuts to keep it from being bulky. ❤️
Hi, i like haw you cut the wire apart, but i don't like wire nuts take too much space, instead i solder them and use shrinking tubes.

Some alternative other choices. 1. Install a box and a receptacle. You would have a convenient place to plug something in. 2. After it is cut , just put on 2 new ends, one would be an outlet . The other would be a plug. Then you have TWO extention cords and not so heavy now due to length where it got damaged. If you need to make a longer run, just plug in where you just repaired. Your TWO CORDS can be one long one again. 3. Use the needed section for a power cord replacement... radio, lamp, vacuum cleaner, drop light etc...
Young fellow you made a good video.. you have the right idea but as a retired old electrician I vote to solder them offset use shrinkrap..just saying

Thank you so much for this. I was stuck today... needed to get my hedges trimmed and right away I cut the cord right in half. I kinda followed your reasoning in using wire nuts but I cut them all the same length and it looked pretty sketchy. I am going to redo it and stagger them as you did... so much smarter. I will replace the cord eventually but this temporary fix seems pretty safe in the interim. Great video and love that you didn't start it out with "Hey guys..."
Agreed, very helpful. I learned about wire nuts, and appreciate electrician's comment verifying repair is okay for home use. I accidentally cut my cord trimming overgrown vines. We're going to give this a try! Thank you for posting tutorial.

Great for a Job Site repair perhaps as Wire Nuts in the middle of an extension cords = should only be for temporary/emergency repairs. Otherwise, invest in some cheap heat shrink, butt connectors and cheap solder to fix it right.

How do I find shorts/breaks in my extension, cuz my line doesn't show like yours ?
I'm a licensed electrician. This is a repair just for a homeowner. You could not bring this cord on a job site per OSHA. This cord is illegal and you would get fined on a commercial or residential job if OSHA did in fact find it. It is not allowed to be repaired. If there is a knick in the wire and tape is used it is not allowed. Most big jobs don't even allow a cord male or female end to be changed! This is a big no no on construction jobs. It would work like I said around the house and that's it. If your butt spice connectors are UL Listed and rated for 250v it would be allowed to be used in an electrical installation.

If installed correctly, quality replacement plugs are far superior to the molded ones that came on the cord.
Nice! Whether this is ok nor not to do, I've done it before. Actually one time I made myself a double work light from an old broken extension cord and two light fixtures. I cut the extension cord and connected it to one light fixture, then added a couple feet of wire and connected the second one. Looked sketchy, but worked great! Haha

good job .... i do the same but i tie a square not between the two wire housings before srewing the nuts so there wont be any tension if you pull the cord like when doing yard work.

This is a good method if you don't have a soldering iron available which most people don't on a job but I like the way you stagnated that's before you put the tape around them very excellent video as it seemed like headcutters are ripping everybody's chords and the same thing happened to me
Do a linesman's splice with solder seal wire connectors and heat shrink around the whole thing. Not to rain but this is just a terrible repair, and probably pretty dangerous.

Well , this sort of repair looks like a temporrary fix. Extension cords must last hevy duty tasks, they should not break when they are under tension...
I recommend to make a good solder connection about half inch long on each wire and isolate it well. The connection must be flat without any bump.

Yikes....It'll work, but trim back, solder, liquid electrical tape and heat shrink....much much cleaner.
How to splice an extension cord
If your in the trades it’s not worth your time buy a new one, it’s a tax deduction. BUT LET YOUR DMPLOYEES HAVE ITTO FIX FOR THEIR SHOP AND EQUIPMENT….
Is not direct current is alternateing current.... Bleck is hot and white is neutral, how you said but power is constantly changing direction, and if you connect dc power device to ac it will die (in some cases blow up) and vise versa..
I don't know how you could cut that electrical tape without scizzors.
the extension cord broke because you stored it improperly. when you coil it up, you are twisting it in one direction only and then it looks like a noodle. the proper way to do it is to do the "over under" method which is what people in the entertainment industry do. I have cords that I use on a weekly basis that are 10 years old without any twists because I store them that way. not hating on you just giving some advice so it does not happen again

Never ever use wirenuts on an extension cord. The "safest and only legal way" to repair this cord is buy two cord caps a male and female. Cut the cord in two and put the female cord cap on the cord that already has a male end on it. This gives you two cords that you can plug together and use or a shorter cord to use when you don't need the full length. Wire nuts will fail on an extension cord and it might not be the best method but if you want to do it cheaply use crimp butt splices and shrink tube over it to make it semi waterproof. Tape on an extension cord is also illegal by osha standards and it won't last long before it peels off.
71160000: Spot on comment. OMG, wire nuts on an extension cord is a horrible idea. Extension cords get pulled, bent, jerked, wrapped around things, stepped upon, often heavy tools are lowered with them, and the like. Wire nuts are used for stationary wires, such as in a junction box, and the like. Never-ever use wire nuts on an extension cord. Using a wire nut on an extension cord is nuts; pun intended.
With extension cords it is better to use butt connectors; yes, they are strong. Some are made as shrink tube butt connectors, they are marine grade. There is glue inside, so when using a heat gun shrinking them they make a watertight seal. That is what I would use on an extension cord. On each wire use a butt connector, regular or marine grade, then cover each wire with a shrink tube, then one final shrink tube over the entire repair.
On the positive side I do like his technique for staggering the wire lengths. On my next wire repair, I will consider using it.

I'm retired electrical engineer in UK and this is an abysmal way to fix a severed cable. Bulky, untidy and downright dangerous and against regulations in Europe. Nuts should only be used in static indoor installations. Yes you are wrong and could be responsible for killing someone by your ignorance and desire to save a few pennies! Did you even carry out a conductivity test on this old cable? I'm appalled - stick to your day job.
