Right way to fix electrical cord

- Clean, safe fix for an electrical cord. If you have a wire or extension cord that is frayed, cut, cracked, torn or otherwise damaged I’ll show the correct way to fix it. You can finish off the repair with either electrical tape of shrink tubing. The example is on a hair dryer with GFCI but this repair works on just about any appliance or tool.

Brilliant! Just found your channel today, and I'm loving it! Your skill, wisdom and sense of humor all shine through in each video. Thanks for sharing all those great traits with us, but MOST IMPORTANTLY:
Thank you for taking the hours to perfectly dry your hair... A masterfully maintained mane such as yours is truly a gift to the world. 😜
Wow! you really did watch my videos. Thanks.
Thank-you! Just fixed a laptop cord with your fix!
Glad it helped out and thanks for watching.
Very professional repair!
Mr Mayhut taught you well 👍
Thanks. If you're gonna do it, do it right.
@@HouseDoctorRayyou know, sometimes doing it wrong is more fun... 😆
Have you ever done sewing machine cords?
No, but you would fix it the same way. I have sometimes had to cut the end off of something else to patch a cord.
I use saulder heat shrink things it has a saulder ring core hot glue and heat shrink 3 in 1 it's my favorite evin if it fails it protects connection from shorting out / shock
The Bell Wrap, from the old phone company, is the way to insure the splice holds.
I think these are the connectors you are talking about.

Very nicely done
Thanks.
Do you have to solder it?
You don't have to but if you are not going to then wrap the wires tightly and use a good quality electrical tape like 3M or Scotch.
@@HouseDoctorRay I think I have not enough cord left at the place that plus into the machine😞
Don't give up Susan. Get a soldering iron from Amazon, hardware store, or Radio Shack. Find the two spots that the wire is connected inside and unsolder them. Take the cord after the break and solder it on.
It's not that hard to do and you can't make it worse. Give it a try and learn a new skill.
You could try the crimp connectors or the connectors in Brian's video:

I have a vacuum cord that was cut slightly. No visible wire was exposed just this white insulation. There is no visible metal wire showing at all just that white insulation. Would it be alright to just wrap the slight with electrical tape?
As long as you don't see any copper it'll be fine.
Do you have to solder it?
Not sure why it took so long for this comment to pop up. Anywho, no, you don't have to solder it but it will last longer if you do.
Would prolly be a bit easier and would have a stronger hold if you were to strip a bit more of the insulation for longer copper to wrap...I'd suggest at least 2 - 3x more...
Most of the plugs I see around don't have screws, so you can't simply open them like in your video.
Thank you, my dog ate through 9 small wires of my $4k treadmill
After you fix it rub some tobasco sauce on it.
Omg mines to 🥲
😢
You wouldn't last five minutes as a tradesman in the UK. Why wouldn't you just shorten the flex by the length of the damaged piece, and re-connect. Far safer.
Because it was a tutorial on how to splice a wire. That splice is never gonna fail.
Have someone with possibly no experience try to unsolder the factory connection and resolder the new without messing it up seems feasible.
If you don't have a toothbrush in your toolbox, be sure to use your wife's. Wash and replace it when you're done with it. What she doesn't know won't bother her. If you use your own, you'll always know that it was used to clean a hair dryer, and you won't be able to use it on your teeth.
How about you stop being cheap and buy a basic toothbrush to keep with your tools?
@@jamess9623 That wouldn't be nearly as much fun! That was a joke.
