I love this howling wilderness of early award season when movies can just be movies and not put into competition with each other. Thanks for the palette cleanser, Joyce and Christopher! 👌
Totally dig your ridiculously early picks, some seem pretty plausible, some are way out there, all are really fun. Loved the Greta Gerwig shirt, "The Adam McKay Memorial Slot," and "The Son" banter, cracked up right at the outset. Totally agree re: the influence of phone alerts/social media/streaming's impact on the ratings, and certainly how EEAAO just swallowed up the competition. Also, after 4 years of smaller/underdog/atypical films, could the pendulum swing back to Big Oscar-Bait again? After all, this year did see a return to Sweep. Well, 9 months to go. Let the games begin, again. Overdue veteran never nominated: Derek Jacobi. Do bring back Oscar Playback, yes, yes, yes. As always, youse twose are the berries. More, please, thank you.
I say for sure Jonathan Majors gets at least a Best Actor nomination next year for Magazine Dreams. And Dune Part 2 gets a strong chance of winning Best Picture. I can see a Return Of The King situation happening at the Oscars for Dune Part 2

Based on the academy’s history I don’t think it’s that wild! But I could see moving her in depending on which movies actually come out this year anyway.
@@chrisjrosenWhat about Lady Gaga? She was nominated in lead and was even a serious contender to win. If there was a bias against musicians in lead acting categories, I feel like she would have been snubbed.
@@TheAlienGingerYeah I think that was a bad take and then he said he put Taraji and Danielle in Supporting because those roles were Oscar nominated and Tony nominated, well so was the role of Celie lol
@@TheAlienGinger That's fair! I don't think it's a perfect comp -- A Star Is Born is not a full musical, Lady Gaga had already won a Golden Globe for acting and was perhaps taken more seriously as a film/tv actor -- but it does show there isn't necessarily a bias against musicians. Andra Day comes to mind too!
In the era of streaming, I think the earlier you release and land on streaming after theaters will help a films chances - more exposure. After the last 2 year, we may be seeing the end of awards contenders being exclusively released in the fall/winter.
I have high hopes for The Holdovers. Alexander Payne is due for a comeback, after Downsizing, which I didn't bother to watch after the bad reviews. He doesn't make films often enough anyway. Sideways was my favorite film of 2004.
