    My wife got a dracaena on her daughter’s birthday, over 30 years ago. It’s 8 feet tall one stalk in our split level entry. I decided it needed a repot, and a trim with propagation. I got three propagations, with leaves from it, and accidentally broke it in half. So ended up just cutting it in half with no leaves. It was way too tall anyway. I’m hoping I’ll get at least one cutting to root, but really not thinking my stick in a pot will survive. I’ve seen some videos where the stick doesn’t survive. A follow up video on your success would be great.
    I really like the multiple stalk idea, thanks, hopefully I get all my cuttings to root.

    It's Medusa Greek mythology. I was just watching your video because I was searching for information about my plan as well. And I was led towards your video and it's fantastic. And I am getting ready to order high quality plant snips and new pots and plums and all kinds of stuff to start cutting my plant down. I can't believe you can actually take sections and then the bottom roots and the top starts to grow up as amazing I never knew this until today and you can see the date I just sent this and I've had this plan for 20 some years it was for my grandfather that my mom said that he gave snippings to people and I never understood that until actually this evening watching videos because I need her out my plan. Anyways great video I subscribed and keep up the good work You're doing great

    Thank you. Is it ok to leave 2 cuttings in a cup? Also do they prefer outdoor sun or indoor shade?

    • @christinalnelson
      @christinalnelson  2 роки тому +2

      Yes, you can have several cutting in a cup. Just make sure to change out the water often. At least once a week. So bacteria doesn't grow and kill your cuttings. And often better to do a few because sometimes they all don't survive and grow roots. I would say the inverse of what you said would be true-- outdoor shade or indoor sun. Most cuttings will do just fine in bright, indirect sunlight and a few hours of morning direct light is good too. I prefer inside because the temperature and exposure is more controlled. I'm sure outside could be fine, but less control. Best of luck! I just took several cuttings from my monstera deliciousa this morning! Once you get into propagating and have some success under your belt, I think you'll love it!

Also it’s starting to grow branches or leaves on the side of the base and side of the branches is that normal ?

    • @christinalnelson
      @christinalnelson  8 місяців тому

      Yes, to my knowledge that’s normal. I’ve heard that if it grows from the bottom it might be in distress. And if there are dying parts, I’d consider cutting it back and that will encourage new growth when you do that and new shoots will show up! Best of luck and thanks for watching!

    Your lucky! Never put these in water to grow roots! This plant actually doesn’t like a lot of water!! I’m not sure who told u to do it that way, and it’s easier, simply place cutting in soil in a WELL DRAINED POT! The soil needs to dry out before watering again. I live in Florida, these plants, of different variations, are all over. When u prune, your not going to get a ‘bunch’ of new ‘branches’. ‘You’d get maybe 2 or 3. You can control them unlike what u said, simply by removing them and u can use to stop growth. All u need to do to start a new is… just pot and soil! You need to cut on 45 degree angel, not straight across, and it can be as little as two inches. When starting a new plant from a short cutting, it’s a beautiful houseplant for a table, dresser, kitchen top etc! These plants grow kinda slowly. So the foliage is perfect on a short clipping before it gets tall. Simply place the cutting into soil in a well drained pot!! They don’t like much water. DRY IT OUT before hand! These r totally full of water, like a cactus. This is why these plants r so easy to grow. One of mine outside has beautiful wide leaves with yellow around the edges, it’s not like urs with thin leaves, mines a different species. 6 to 8 inches in a year is slow growing.to braid them, isn’t really about light etc… you can train this plant by using nylon and it tied to rocks to pull it where u want. Desert roses r done this way. Braiding a plant takes a LONG TIME!! A reason why braided plants in nurseries or stores are so expensive.

      They can grow roots in water. You just have to check it daily and change water routinely. Of all my cuttings, dracaena is the one I’m most meticulous about changing water. If you have a branched plant, roots can also grow off the top branches.

      I'll give an update here! Things did not go well! I think the issue was the health of the plant was already struggling due to my aggressive treatment to rid it of pests so that is why the propagation didn't take off and root successfully. Not only did the propagation fail but the other two plants that were planted together also died. I tried to salvage one by attempting to propagate the top and those also just rotted. I have had so many successful propagations so I stand by what I showed in this video because the techniques do work (usually!). Just, unfortunately, not in this case!
