    The pokey is a very important skill to have in beach volleyball. Unlike in indoor volleyball, where we can tip the ball with an open hand to save a bad set/fool the defense, in beach volleyball we have to keep our hand closed. That is where the pokey comes in!
    It can be a little scary trying to poke for the first time, but if you follow my tips, you will be able to do it pain-free, and with a lot of control. The poke can be used to fix a bad set, to disguise a shot, or to place the ball with a lot of precision. It is an incredibly useful tool that I honestly feel is underused.
    In this video, I go over the technique of how to poke a volleyball in beach volleyball, including how to position your hand and how to move your arm to maximize control and minimize pain.

    The pokey is a skill that I feel is 100% underused!! It is so useful in many different situations, and if you learn to use it effectively, it can be a valuable weapon on the beach!

    I mostly play indoors so when I play on the beach I forget about the no tipping with an open hand lol. As always, very useful video! Thanks!

    Thanks for this tip! I’ve seen one of my friends poke the ball and i always wonder how he did so since I always hurt my finger trying to do it before.

    Since you're trying to contact the bottom of the ball, does that give away the intention versus trying to hit it hard which requires making contact at at least the horizontal level?

    • @SarahPavanVolleyball
      @SarahPavanVolleyball  3 роки тому +2

      That's a very good question. If the poke is being used to get out of trouble, your position is likely compromised to begin with, so the opponent knows you are unable to hit it. If you aren't in trouble and are using the poke to move the defense around, the key is to load your elbow back into a hitting position and do the move from there. If your elbow drops, it's giving it away. A decent defender will watch your elbow, and loading it back will make them hold, regardless of where you end up contacting the ball. I hope that makes sense.

    Is it allowed the “tripod” pokey supported by the thumb?

      I think I know what you mean.... if your hand has a claw shape, you should be ok. If the hand is open at all, though, you will probably be called.

      @@SarahPavanVolleyball It is about 2 cousins competing in beach volleyball in Okinawa. One of the cousin's had previously quit because she is fairly short. The other cousin is new to beach volleyball but very enthused to try it, and encourages her cousin to come back to the sport she loves. It is a short, 12 episode show, but I enjoyed it quite a bit.
