60 drummers in a few years has to be some sort of world record. A drummer making Vern happy would have to be the equivalent of pulling Excalibur from the stone. : )
too funny! omg
Did Vern have trouble with his timing?
Hilarious story! God help him if he tried a Louisiana drummer haha
They say all the greats are a tad bit off in one way or another.
😂, exactly. That observation was great Mr. Otis. Thanks a million
I grew up in a family country band whereas my sister was the drummer. Our dad, who started the band, couldn't hold his timing if his life depended on it. So my sister used to take her drumsticks and hit him in the butt whenever he got behind. Well THAT didn't go well...I can't count the times he would knock her off her drums whenever she did that.
Fast forward, my sister went on to play with some of the biggest names in country although she never was a household name whatsoever. Just a great drummer and vocalist. It happens. In the end before his death, my dad took up singing karaoke songs at folks' homes with his own electronic drummer to boot. Even then he was always behind. Thanks for the great story of Vern and David. I can soooooo relate! LOL
I knew Vern back in the 80s and opened some shows and wrote some with him. I can attest that he hated any drummer who wasn’t Jerry Kroon.
And he probably hated him too.
What was he like in person?
@@dltguitar6532 Hard to describe in a few words. He was funny - loved to laugh. Very smart. Or I guess savvy would be a better word. Obviously had been around and had been through a lot in the business.
Seemed to be a guy who’d been taken advantage of so he was wary and perhaps slightly bitter. But easy to be around although perhaps hard to get to really know.
This was just prior to his final run of success with CBS. But the deal was in the works and he was excited. So he wasn’t drinking to speak of and had stopped smoking and gone to chewing tobacco. Always walking around with a spit cup.
Not a big man. Perhaps slightly below average height and a bit stooped. But appeared to be rather powerfully built under the pullover sweaters he always wore - like someone who had worked hard or lifted weights.
He was very plain - no pretense, no airs. Blue collar sort but didn’t wear it on his sleeve. But nothing about him stands out. Just an ordinary fellow who loved music and was trying to make a living at it. And without any notion of his own greatness.
I swear that drum machine is speeding up !!! 😂🤣Dang!!! ✌️😎
I heard Vern several times live. I kid you not, the man had no sense of timing. Loved him. Great voice. Wished we had 100 more like him. But when it came to timing, he jumped all over the place...a drummer's nightmare. And when he was late or early jumping into sing, he looked at the poor drummer, who was holding on the best he could.
@RonnieGreen,I noticed watching an Episode of the Opry, Vern came out singing and turned back and raised his hand like to step up the song or etc. Nothing really changed. Since you said that I thought about that episode.
I sure didn't know that about Vern! I bet he didn't have many drummer friends! LOL There was no doubt why they called him "The Voice "! Man I really miss the old greats of music!❤ 💔
'The rhythm is gonna get you' -Gloria Estefan
'...and I was thinking I got to get out of here'. No truer words have ever been said, whether a musician or not. ✌
That is a fantastic story!
I must admit, after deal with a “moody” drummer of the last few years, a machine is starting to sound like a pretty attractive option😁
I can relate. When I play drums with a metronome, it always slows down during the chorus.
I LOVE DAVE!
I haven't seen him in many moons...
Such a great person!
I don't care what you say that machine is speeding up🤣🤣🤣 That's gotta be a t shirt
A Vern tribute shirt!
Love it! I think Dave is up there with the best, what a great story
Vern and Steely Dan should have formed a band.
Haha! That's brilliantly funny.
I was just on the phone with a former band member who played with Dr John, Edgar and Johnny Winter, Bobby Kimball from Toto, etc..... I told him I have a chance to get to Heaven if I don't kill a drummer first. Of course as a lead singer I'm not sure who takes the most abuse, the drummer or lead singer. I've been very fortunate though to have had some of the very best drummers in my band I must say through the years. I'll pass this on and if it helps use it, if it doesn't then don't. A song is like a conversation, if everyone is listening instead of all speaking at the same time, ( showing off their latest lick that doesn't fit the song) then the magic has a chance to happen. Few musicians understand this. Funny story thanks Dave. Made me laugh at myself.
'Lead Singers. 'Abuse'. Lol!..... What?............
You have to make sure the drum machine has been set on a perfectly level surface, or they'll speed up or slow down on ya! ;- )
That's tremendous! : )
@@otisgibbs Thanks! But everybody knows the REAL reason you get a drum machine is because they drink less beer than a "real" drummer!
@@svt4001 "They" drink less beer, has to be the understatement of the week!😂👍
@@svt4001 They also have to be carried home after the gig.

I had heard several years ago from a bass player for a very famous, now passed on, male country singer in the late 1980s that Vern had 40 drummers in one year. I always wondered how true that was. 😂
Competes with Spinal Tap in going through drummers.
luckily no spontaneous combustion
Ha ha ... love this one. So been there. (well, not with Vern Gosdin but with singers who don't know when their mood is affecting their feel). I had to watch it twice. That is too funny.
Oh that's hilarious! The machine was probably set on "realistic " mode.
Late 80s. Vern played a club in Bensenville, Il. The house band had to completely clear off the stage, which had drums in the middle, so that they could set up Vern's drummer as far as possible from him. I was told that his drummer that night was his wife/girlfriend. If that's true, even she tortured him!
dave roe for president! lol thanks brother otis love these - SJOCR
This is great, Otis. More interviews from Dave please.

@@gregb8565 Thanks. :)
“Now, are you a rusher, or are you a dragger, or are you gonna be on my f*cking time?” --Terence Fletcher from the movie "Whiplash"
Love Dave’s stories especially since I’m a bar band bassist . I got a call from a friend got a gig in waupun Wisconsin prison town. This was in the mid-1980s. Talking pre midi stuff , I asked my friend how much it pay , he said $150 we can make 50 with a drummer or 75 with a machine , naturally, I said, bring the machine
Thank Ya'll for the great story !
Whoa! Holy smokes!!!
I saw y'all in Myrtle Beach in the early 90's and wondered outloud to my friend beside me, "Where's the drummer?" I think I asked a crew guy about it although I don't remember what he said exactly. I think it was something like, "Vern don't like drummers."
JJ cale said it best. The drum machine doesn’t rush or drag and it doesn’t run off with the old lady !
Correct, listen to the beat box on "naturally" album 71ish. And I'm a drummer.
I had the displeasure of meeting Verne Gosden when he lived in Ardmore, Tennessee. I told him it was nice to meet him and thanked him for his music.
He acted like a total jerk.
I heard Vern Gosdin fired Chris Hillman for being too honest. One night, I heard a story on American Country Countdown in March of 1989, and Chris Hillman, who was under the age of 21 at the time back in the 60's, was stopped by a bouncer and was asked for his I.D. Chris replied " I'm under 21 years old" and was not allowed to enter the club to perform. Vern Gosdin was looking for Chris and found out what happened. Vern threw his hands up and said "What the F happened, I'm paying you for this S**! Chris said he was too chicken to say he was 21 years old. Vern raised his hands in the air and yelled "What are you so chicken shit for!!!" Go home Chris!!" You're fired!!"
Yep, that was definetly a Vern problem.
Crazy storey, I would never want to be replaced by something with no heart and soul. ✌🏻
THAT is a great story!
I don't care who you are: that's funny right there!
That is hysterical..LOL
Always with the drummers….my band had five drummers in as many years…
lol . that's great!!!
Check out his ACL video, from the mid 80s, on the tube. The songs are honkin' fast, right outa the chute. I thought he was either speeding them up to keep the show from being draggy or he was trying to squeeze an extra song in the 30 minutes, they gave him, which was an injustice. Vern deserves the whole hour. Anyway, after hearing this story, I wondered how long this particular show's drummer lasted? I can't remember his name, but I thought he was a good drummer.
Playing to a click track/ Metronome makes the music sound stiff and unnatural. Music is a living, breathing thing just like the musicians that play it; it needs to be able to ebb and flow. Perfect time is NOT good time. I've been a professional drummer for 50+ years of my life. The best thing I ever did was to throw out that metronome and listen to the other musicians. Word!
Hahahaha..! I’ve been in bands that I said the same thing..! “ I gotta get outta here..😩”
Cool episode Otis.! Thanks 👍🏼❤️
Vern was the best.
That is the best story.
I played with a drummer once who played like a roller coaster, slow, fast, slow fast! We tried a click track thinking he would settle in on the beat and he swore the click track wasn’t working correctly! Jeez Louise! lol! 😂
I never met Vern Gosdin, so I can't say he was a jerk, but I heard he had a quick temper and raised his voice and shouted a lot when he was angry with someone.
I have several friends who play drums, they are always sayin that they get no respect, after this story, maybe they are right..
One of the very few things my Mom (95 years old) and I disagree on is who’s the Greatest County Singer ever. I’m on Team Possum, she’s on Team Gosdin…
Great story LoL 8D
Funny! The drum machine is speeding up…
So the dude was right about the drum machine- due to unregulated voltage differential on the road at different venues…it’s totally possible that the drum machine kept different time ( though very slight ) at different gigs…
Bring in all the drummer jokes now.
How do you know there's a drummer at your door?
The knocking speeds up.
“My timing is digital.” - Data, Star Trek NG episode “Outrageous Okona”. (Sorry. A little nerd slipped out).
I don’t want to be too negative toward a man who isn’t around to defend himself. I’ll just say this. I have an acquaintance who spent many years touring with some pretty big Nashville names back in the 80’s. He told me awhile back that it was common knowledge that working for Vern was no picnic. That doesn’t erase the fact that Vern was a great singer.
Had to watch it twice because I thought he said 60 and not 6! Turns out he did say 60!
🎸🖤
Could be the cocaine
How do ya know if a stage is actually level? If the drummer is drooling out both sides of his mouth! 🤤😂🤤
🤣
👍🏼 I believe that once a person gets a burr up their,,,for any reason,,it's easy to keep beating that dead horse. What ya reckon Buddy Rich would have done to a guitar player?👍🏼 GOD BLESS
Hilarious 😆
That's hilarious
Paul Cook was the best drummer Vern ever had and he would tell you that until he died.
Hilarious
I swear, I believe that 95% of drummers don't know that they're supposed to be making music instead of how hard they can hit a set of drums.
(𝗤𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: What do you call a guy who likes to hang out with musicians?
𝗔𝗻𝘀𝘄𝗲𝗿: A drummer.)
That's funny. I have a similar problem as Vern. I swear drummers can't count to four?
Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!
lol
😂
So.. vern was slowing down. Right? And if that's true, see why drummers get no respect.
Vern is either a genius or the complete opposite.
60… 🆘
Old joke: Whaddaya call someone, who hangs around musicians all day?
Answer: A drummer.
Stole this one off the internet… What does a drummer use for contraception?
His personality.
I don’t like drums period.
That is the best story ever
Vern is a great singer. but not very nice.
I have heard that too. I posted about it above before I read this.
there is a story that he paid to have his manager Gary Paxton killed..great singer though
🤣
Lol
