This exercise was the make or break moment for all of us during our test session. Right before examination, the instructor set up a mini course for us to practice on freely for about 20 minutes. I ran the U-turn like 5 times to try and get the feel for the balance, friction zone, and right amount of press on the rear brake. Because I KNEW if I failed this thing it would be because I didn't do the U-turn right.
The day before I was turning so wide, kept dropping my feet, stalled the engine, I was too scared to counter weight.. It was overall very ugly. But moving into the 2nd day I managed to improve massively. On the final examiniation, I managed to stay within the box but ended up putting my foot down. The nerves were really getting to me and it also didn't help that I was first. I believe my mistake was I didn't have enough counter weight going on it. But thankfully, I didn't drop the bike and managed to pass the course.
Unfortunately for one of us there, they dropped the bike on the U-turn and immediately my heart sank. I left that day feeling so sad despite getting my endorsement, mostly cause I had heard it was that students 2nd time around the course and you never want to see your peers fail. Could've easily been me as well if I had panicked and done anything else.
I wish anyone luck who's got a rider course coming up. Bite the bullet like me and either put your foot down (if you happen to stay within the line) or even better cross the line and put no feet down. Just eat your points and don't drop the bike. You'll be fine, trust me.

    • @MotoJitsu

Lol that’s actually not even allowed by the instructors to do that but it is the MSF and they do all kinds of weird stuff lol

I made that mistake of putting my foot down rather than going out of bounds. Failed by 1 point on the box and was told that I should've just gone out of bounds rather than put my foot down and I would've passed with an 89 overall (missed 1 point hitting a cone on the weave and aced the rest).

@@mohammadnoor8429 I didn't forget, I purposely say don't use if for this drill in order to get proficient at the clutch and throttle, the two most important controls of the bike...once you've mastered those 2 and then want to add the rear brake sure. But I know too many people who use the rear brake too soon and it becomes a crutch.

Love your channel ! Your advice and then the people actually practicing what you are explaining is so, so important. I used to work in an office on the seventh floor across from a motorcycle and motor scooter dealer. I saw several new owners drop their beautiful machines before they got two blocks from the store - went too big before having experience and working up to that size bike.
And remember - dirt bikes, street bikes, and scooters are not 100% interchangeable skills ! They have dangerous differences in required finesse situations. I'm 75 now, and I was an off-road guy mostly. Now my "speed" is a 150cc scooter, which I dropped the first week, in the gravel of a parking lot).....can't fling a scooter around like a motocross bike...:(( And without a clutch, scooters are in my opinion a bit tougher to control in emergencies.

Well done, nicely explained. I had a hard time with this over the weekend, dropped the bike twice during the drill, but learned from it and passed the test. I dropped the bike because I wasn’t using the throttle at all, just relied on the clutch. I’m a big guy and was on a 250. I rolled the throttle a little and when I needed that extra power it was there through the clutch.

Those are the keys to the box, been coaching it (MSF) for years, nicely done. When I do a static demo showing counterweighting and head turn I too stress that clutch, 1/4-1/2" is all you are working with. I find some struggle on the second turn as they coast through turn one and loose momentum, get them to let that clutch out a little and they make it through once and the confidence comes. Always good stuff on your channel.

Nice channel !! Really help me to prepare my practice set up for Spring !! Ya we still have about 3 feet of snow here 😂!! Do you ship your book in Canada ? I would not ask for the French version 😜 but seriously that book could help me to gain some confidence with practice excersise with my new bike which I didn’t make a lot of mileage in the last 2 years. And thanks again for the quality of your videos 🙂 🏍

I learned how to ride a long time (over ten yrs) ago. I just bought my first (dual sport bike) and I've watched your videos while waiting (a month) for my bike to arrive. You've given me a lot of tips I forgot and are new to me. You've been chosen as my new instructor (can't afford courses yet, but will soon) because your explanation and demos have helped me greatly. I subscribed to your channel, and repeatedly watch your videos and will continue (and comment on each on to show you that I am following, as a good student should) to do so. Keep it up, enjoy your instructions, I need some of those shirts, how can I order. Look forward to your response. Stay positive, stay safe.

Thank You so much for this video! I work for a Harley shop and took the MSF course and this exercise got the best of me along with my anxiety of being a first time rider. After watching this I feel 100 times more confident with performing this drill and will put it to the test tomorrow at work in the morning. After watching this I can see where I made errors and I'm ready to give it another go. Thanks

Thank you for all your time and videos. Have helped me tremendously.
Can you go over when to shift weight and counterbalance vs. when you should push and lean into a turn? Seems like an obvious answer would be speed, but as a new rider I still have trouble with this. Have been slow speed practicing and counterbalancing, but also practicing faster turns where I try to push and lean. Hope this question makes sense.

Many variables determine what you do per corner...takes time and more training and more miles of practice.

I haven't been on a motorcycle in over 42 years and I plan on taking the MSF course as soon as the world starts returning to normal. I rode a moped for 7 years and that was breeze . Of course, like anything, you get good at something by practicing. I hoping my moped experience helps me out on the course. As soon as I looked up
" The Box", you were listed first, so I clicked, and I'm glad I did. I subscribed right away. 2 THUMBS UP 👍👍😎 on your channel. And 2 more THUMBS UP 👍👍 on explanaing in lamens terms for anyone and everyone to understand.

@@61soldiergirl I didn't have the money for the MSF course. I did try taking lessons from someone who teaches riding not to far away from me, however it didn't work out so I plan on trying to actually sign up for the MSF this time. World will never be back to normal, however that's another chapter. I'll keep you updated as soon as I know what I'm doing.
