The Rolex Day-Date 118238 - Played Out Or Super Cool? + A 35k Tissot Chronograph Watch?! (WWT#77)

  • In today's WWT (Wrist Watch Talk) episode I take a look at an amazingly stunning Tissot from 1942 with a hefty price tag of a staggering 35k. Not only is it a pristine example of the heyday of Tissot but it answers a few interesting questions behind the inspiration of my own limited edition Tissot Janeiro Z199.
Then I go on discuss and help a loyal supporter of the channel who is considering a yellow gold Rolex Day-Date 118238 luxury watch to commemorate his up and coming 35th birthday. He is dead set on buying a new Day-Date but is concerned if it too much of a predictable loud choice in solid yellow gold. I offer my opinion and ask the audience if the iconic watch is played out or still uber cool?

Someday, I would get a pre-owned 18k gold day-date on a president bracelet. Personally, I buy watches that I will keep for the rest of my life. Of course, I am the type to have five pieces and no more.

Yeah same here when I buy a watch I buy it to keep it and wear it and not to sell it 3 months later. The yellowgold daydate is my grailwatch too

Because the gold Rolex day date is my #1 grail watch, I was taken aback when I saw the title of the video. I think it is pleasantly gaudy being all gold, but incredibly tasteful in size and heritage (Presidents and Pope John Paul II, etc.). Add a green strap to the gold day date and it absolutely pops.

    Hi TGV,
the Day Date President will ALWAYS be the ruler of all watches ;) It is obnoxious indeed but in a good way if that makes sense lol It really depends on the personality of the owner and the way one wears it.
    Take care my friend!
    Cheers!

TGV is absolutely right. The yellow gold is the right metal for the president. Maybe we can compare to a ferrari in red/scarlet.
Any other colour just doesn`t make the president, "The President". Possibly one of the most powerful watch out there.

    • @lecorsaire2283
      @lecorsaire2283 7 років тому +1

132elephant Exactly. Either you have the balls to wear a solid gold watch and all the attention both positive and negative that it brings or you don't. Buying a PM DD is a waste if bought in white gold. Rose gold ok, platinum also nice especially the new DD40 with the glacier motif dial.

personally i would want a yellow gold daydate as to be blunt it is a **** off watch that gets doors opened but i'd consider getting a platinum or white gold daydate as well for wealthy events or when you want to blend in with the middle classes

I got a date date rose gold in mint condition 36 mm still had the green sticker on the back. Box and papers. Bracelet in phenomenal condition.. I chose it in rose gold with a smooth bezzle and an oyster rather than presidential bracelet. White face with 18 carat rose gold Roman numerals. Beautiful watch and I think A LITTLE BIT understated for gold A-day date.

The 118238 is perfection. I would probably never buy a DD or a sports Rolex in a white precious metal except for a DD40 or Platona (I wish) but the 36mm needs to be YG/champagne dial. However, absolutely no diamonds and especially never aftermarket diamonds. I don't care if people think I'm being conspicuous or acting nouveau riche. If you're going to spend money on a PM DD or Sub, it has to be yellow otherwise just stick to SS and save the money. Rose also a nice option for a DD. I love the luster of yellow gold and I could care less what others think.
IMO, DDs are like S500s. If you don't have the latest gen, it's not the flagship luxury piece that it's supposed to be anymore. So many 18038s and 18238s going for around $12-14k with stretched bracelets. It's nearly impossible to find an 1803 with a good bracelet. They're all on leather and a DD on leather just isn't a DD. The President bracelet is what makes the watch really special. There are plenty of nice gold watches made to be worn on leather. This simply isn't one of them.

TGV-your advice on an all gold President is right on IMHO. It takes a certain personality to pull that one off and going with a leather strap and a matching color dial is the way to play it safe and not feel some significant buyer's remorse afterward.

Your 100% spot on about the finance guys and submariners. My father is a stock trader and has 2 gold sub Mariners one with a blue face and solid gold bracelet and one with a two tone silver and gold band and the same blue face with a silver case instead of a gold one. And my uncle who also works in finance for UBS, has 2 solid gold submariners and all his co worker’s wear submariners.

I can see and understand the reasons one would hesitate on a Day-Date, but in the classic 36mm yellow gold styling I just think you can't go wrong, even if it's a bit bling-y. The newer larger versions though, I'd definitely agree it's just too much.
Anyway, the nice part about a watch like this is that you'll never have issues getting your money back on the resale market if you grab a model in good condition.

TGV - extract from the Book "TISSOT - 150 YRS OF HISTORY" - "The Janeiro chronograph was produced in a limited series by Tissot in 1996; its design embodied that of a chronometer made in 1938 on a Lemania 33.3 calibre, but it incorporated an ETA Valjoux 7765 13-3/4"' So it looks like the limited edition amount was based on Lemania calibre of the original model.

I personally like them both. I have an homage of that (the Bulova Super Seville Date & Day) and in 36mm it's quite nice to wear. I also had the original one on my wrist (but don't own one) and it was comfortable.
But yes, the new 41mm version is also nice and beautiful. I personally prefer the 41mm Datejust with jubilee over the 41mm date day. But that's just a matter of taste (and $$$).

Here in Zurich Switzerland, most of the upper management type people working in finance and law firms almost always go for the IWC Portuguese. I had a client once who wore a Breitling Transocean and I told him "nice Breitling! Something you don't see every day!" and he said "When I go into the board room, I don't want to be one of many, and wear a Portuguese or a Submariner, I want to be that one guy people look at and say, hmm what's he wearing?"

Tissot what a beauty but in life some things like this comes with a price tag.
The Rolex, nothing to think solid classic, but in 35 yo go try a few and play in store with the dial options... Being young maybe not a gold dial I'd personally like the gold bracelet and use a leather strap some times to bring it more casual.

Cool Tissot history Tristano!! Agree with the smaller 36 mm if Stephano is going all gold. Still too much bling for my taste. I would suggest he look at a few JLC's in precious metal if that is deemed critical, such as 1958 Geophysic, flies under radar with a great motor inside.

Loving the work TGV, was so glad we got the Calatrava a couple of episodes back. Definitely a grail watch and to me it feels like a an insider secret watch. Everyone knows Rolex, omega etc... But Patek is ours!

Nice video as always and I agree the day date is the watch to have is the true meaning of Rolex at its essence, I think will be my 40th, I always nearly bought a Rolex but always ended up buying other makes but now, At 40yo the sub is for kids the day date is such a classic, vintage, stunning complete looking watch. Under a suit or in jeans it pulls it off like no other. Rolex ha un Nome pieno e una presenza importante.. Nessun modello ha questo come il day date. E come un Maserati... Ha Classe sportivo e non è ostentoso!! Prendiloooooooo !!!! Ciao.

Our local dealer had a pre-owned Tissot Janeiro for sale last year. I kept thinking I should get that watch - TGV's looks so damn cool. Then I forgot all about it. Of course your videos reminded me but just too late. Ah well, another will come along and I still have sights set on a Tudor Black Bay red as my next watch. But wow, that Tissot of yours is such a classic watch. That vintage Tissot - wow, 35K? Amazing. A fun video. Ciao, John

it's a Submariner, which he wears on his right hand, with the Crown in the "hacking" position. He does this as to not ruin continuity within the scenes (this way minutes or hours wont pass by on the watch in scenes where only seconds should be passing)
Can you identify Dustin Hoffman's watch brand?

Regarding the Day-Date, I think if it was gold with a white or silver face it wouldn't be AS over the top as an all-gold one. I haven't looked into the details of what they offer as far as dial colors, but that's a thought.
I do like the other ones you showed with the more subdued colors with leather strap.
The only other thing is that I personally have seen a lot of people who wear cheap knock off gold watches, and it strikes me as feeling too much of that in some ways, even though it isn't Rolex's fault of course.

The 40mm Rolex Day Date on the president bracelet, which has no vernier adjustment, is just plain Harry Enfield character. The 36mm on a leather strap is so much better and discreet.

Excellent video and advice as always. I'm in the same boat as Stefano, the President in solid gold is my grail. To me it is the ultimate in over all status and personal accomplishment. It speaks power, class, respect and confidence in every language

My cheaper watches like your "flighty" I have such trouble getting rid of, even if I don't wear it, simply because the emotional attachment is worth so much more than a couple hundred $$. I say keep it for a beater.

How funny this video came out today...I wore my handed-down ref 18038 (1980) yellow gold DayDate today for the first time in many weeks. A few months ago I decided the yellow gold President bracelet was just too much and put it on a croc strap. I must say I am totally in love with the look. It just has this old world class and sophistication that it never had with the gold bracelet. Don't get me wrong, the gold is gorgeous but I agree with TGV...it's better suited on an older gentleman than on a 43 year old dude who rarely wears a suit. It dresses both up and down with ease, and never shouts "look at me". But that's just my way...I totally respect it with the bracelet too!
Thanks for the video, TGV. Riveting as always!
