220k on mine and still smokes new muscle cars. Just drinks a little oil between changes
Pretty normal! Low tension oil control rings. Also valve guide seals
@DCMotorWerks i notice it more when I beat on it in the summer
I’ve noticed that, too
234k pulled the motor, did the valve stem seals, oil pump pick up tube o-rind. Original transmission etc....
You have no idea how happy it makes me to find other Benz content creators on here! Awesome work, like said these are definitely becoming more and more known. Videos like this are vital and so helpful to have for a diy’er. Thank you, sub’d!
Thank you so much we really appreciate it
Best mod for these is a proper dipstick or even a calibrated plastic one kept in the trunk.
It's not only the level you need to check every week it's the colour of it and whether mayo present or not.
Performance engines need constant TLC ⚠️✅
We have made a few of those.
Keep those videos coming - you're rapidly turning into one of the great car repair channels on UA-cam ❤
Thank you we really appreciate it!
Can you tell me around how much is the cost of this job? Not asking for a quote just thinking about buying a 113k and would like an idea.
The worn timing cover due to the chain is common and guaranteed. It's best to grind off the material to prevent further issue. Also it's common from the timing sprockets on the crank shaft to have worn out rubber, best to inspect and replace as needed. I assume the timing chain and guides were all replaced since it's already out.
The ‘ol run quiet gear yup those are generally trash. Rubber+oil=mess
I absolutely lap up any W211 and M113K content owning an E55 myself - thanks for the explanation at 11:25 regarding the oil pump chain tensioner. Other than creating an unfortunate rattle its probably not too much of a concern I wouldn't have thought.
We agree it may not cause an issue but any looseness is not good
The O-Ring Failure is actually a pretty common one on the M113(K). The german mercedes focussed channel "Motoren Zimmer" described this in a Video called "1,22€ Dichtring verursacht Motorschaden bei AMG" about 3 years ago. Video is german only unfortunately.
It's usually the result of using the wrong oil, not approved by Mercedes Benz for this engine. This will soften/expand the rubber, causing it to warp and present with the failure you saw.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing
He took that back in a later video that the wrong oil destroyed the infamos 1,22€ O-Ring. The M112 and the M112k have also this problem.
The oil pickup pump has a similar o-ring that in hotter climates has been known to dry out. These o rings don’t go bad that often, it’s a rare failure for a reason.
Haven't seen that on these motors but on others ones, yes. Totally possible. Nothing lasts forever.
@@DCMotorWerksI have a CLS55 AMG..
I’d read the 06+ had a revised o ring seal that wasn’t prone to failure, I’m reaching 160k miles, full bolt on car… I’m not afraid at all to remove the engine and do an o ring replacement everywhere, clean the lifters etc, but if I’m not noticing anything wrong, am I jumping the gun?
I live in middle GA, it’s commonly 95+ for at least 2 months of the year, I tend to drive my truck then, but I do bring the CLS out from time to time..
more Mercedes content! keep up. Later you might wanna consider doing tutorials for each job you guys do, with good filming + editing. looking forward to it
Look forward to providing!
I’m on my 5th m113k car. 2nd E55 and 3 previous R230’s. I called all 5, the f around and find out car because I smoked mustangs, vettes, various Audis, and more. Most robust platform ever made and all in a family sedan version.
Hi Team - just doing my W211 M113k now - just about to get the front timing cover off. I've kept mine in the car and removed the whole front end. So just lifting the engine from the supercharger. Just wondering if you replaced the guides and/or chain? My engines thankfully very clean so hoping to keep the same chain etc.
Like that E55 wagon in first few still shots.
Same! May have one coming up for sale here soon, Black/black wagon
Oil pump pick up tube gasket should also be replaced.
Overfilling the engine can be avoided by draining from the sump bolts , and then measuring out and adding the correct amount only.
Or not having external influence adding extra fluids 😅
@@DCMotorWerks Yes ..a mistake some people make is to read the oil amount in litres from the dash and then add more oil until they get to the replacement amount in the owners manual . Unfortunately this will result in an over filled engine.
If memory serves me right, I think that when I purchased my e55 with 95,000 miles, when I had the dealer replace the motor mounts, I had had him drop the oil pan and replaced 2 pickup tube rubber seals. I did this because I had read that if either seal should dry up, crack, etc, it would be catastrophic for the m113k motor. Was I thinking correctly back in 2020 ?
@@Joseph-wp2ry Yes you were. This is not a common problem , but it can happen , especially if the car has been driven really hard with high oil temperatures.
@@Joseph-wp2ry Yes you were. This is not a common problem , but it can happen , especially if the car has been driven really hard with high oil temperatures.
I have an '03 s55 that is losing a bit of antifreeze mysteriously. I believe the m113k in my car does not have the dual sump oil pan. Would it be possible to run a boroscope through the oil drain hole in my oil pan(oil drained of course) and see the cover leaking down if I pressurize the cooling system?
do you ever see this issue on W210s? All I see online is W211s and later with this issue. Wonder if the blower, and years of beating on it/heatsoak causes them to degrade faster. especially curious as I'm looking to get into a W210 E55 in the next year or so :0
Have not personally seen it however any 113 motor would be susceptible.
That problem seems to becoming a lot more common now that these are coming on 20 years old. Seems the orings on these engines are just aging out.
Nothing lasts forever!
I can’t wait 😂
@@DCMotorWerkshow many hours to conduct this engine out repair? I worry for my C55 AMG now!
@@KingofInternsAs one guy commented, I think he was able to check his oring condition while he had water pump removed. If those orings are behind the front cover, you would probably need to pull balancer. So it is probably doable in the car if you make room. May have to pull radiator to make room. And see if oil pan has be moved. It would be good idea to pull pan anyway and check/replace oil pump pickup oring if it has one, i know e55 it is a failure point. There are multiple pickup/pan setups on m113/m113k engines, not sure all of them have an oring. To my knowledge cls55 has same setup as e55, unsure on sl and c. I dont believe s55 has an oring.
My 2005 CLK 55 AMG with the M113 has an O-ring for reference@@connor3288
Is the seal failure due to over filling? Or is this a maintenance M113k owners should be doing? How many miles does on this car? Can you provide the cost $$$$?
Thank you for sharing!!
on a cl55 kompressor can this be done with the engine in with rads and slam panel removed or does the engine have to come put, the 16 quarts I assume was the added coolant, didnt the coolant cause any damage to big end bearings
Bearings were unscathed. Best to pull the engine
Another awesome video. I wonder if the original engine builder felt something as you pulled that one apart 😅
A disturbance in the force
I have a 2004 e500 and I have had the oil level sensor tell me that oil was too high.
Electronics are only great until they’re not
Maybe it was.
I just encountered this same problem on my 2006 E55. Luckily I've not had coolant mixing with the oil yet, but was replacing the water pump and decided I'd better check the timing cover O-rings. You can feel them by reaching into the coolant ports in the timing cover. It was immediately obvious as soon as I checked that one of mine had cracked and was coming out of place.
Good catch! Preventative maintenance is a wonderful thing
can those orings be replaced via the coolant port by prying them out and sliding new ones in via those same 2 ports
Must’ve been a cold day in Atlanta. Did you check the main/rod bearings? Emulsified oil can do damage quick.
It was chilly. Bearings looked good. It was caught early. Car still runs like a scalded cat
What year and model is the black one next to it? That thing is insanely nice looking and I see one in my future.
@@MastermindLife365 1979 450SEL 6.9
Those failing coolant passage O-rings are definitely not a rare occurrence anymore. Was one of the first things I had to do when I got my 2006 CLS55. Luckily its more of a once in a lifetime job
How many miles on your cls when you got it? I just got mine in February and had the rear main seal done. 60k miles.
@@Wha_SAAB I bought my CLS with 69k mls.
@@Wha_SAABdoesn’t matter about mileage when your car is close to 20 years old. It could have 25k miles on it, but rubber degrades overtime even if the car is babied it’s whole life. That’s one thing you need to take into consideration when purchasing a vehicle that old.
@@bigsmk9168 fair point. Sounds like the O-rings are a one time thing, so not too worried. I’ll just keep maintaining it and fix things as they wear out. Phenomenal car.
How much did cost to perform this job?
Gotta use dip stick when not sure. Available on Amazon.
yes, when you see milkshake under the oil filler cap, it will more than likely "NOT" be headgaskets... it will be the front cover seals/o-rings... a very commonly mis-diagnosed M113 issue.
Im looking at bying a low kms 2006 E55. Hiw do you prevent these o rings going bad? Ir if they do, can you change them without needing to take the whole engine out? I will do all the preventative mods first like separate supercharger cooling, loop fuel rail. But is there anything else?
Timing cover off replace 0 ring or you have chocolate milk
How much did all this work cost the customer? I'm in the market for a refresh of my M113K motor.
My '05 C230 Kompressor Sport tells me if I have even a half a qt too much oil in it
Technology is great when it works
I have a clk55 and picked up a dips tick to check the as I don't trust the oil level in the car.
Thanks for the video , , the music was not of my taste but the info were great !!! just don't forget to change the o ring on the pump pipe , XF Motors made a video of it ,.thanks
Of course! Thank you
The oil level sensor only measures oil. It won’t work with coolant. I forget if the coolant ruins it or if it comes back to life with oil in it tho
Been working fine ever since!
Great content wow 16 qts
Great video.
This is exactly why I can't afford cars like this unfortunately.
Because even though in Ireland, used Mercedes are unbelievably cheap, the trouble is the cost of petrol and motor(road)tax, which depends on the engine capacity.
Anything over 2 litres isn't affordable and to add insult to injury, cars prior to 2008 are taxed three times the yearly tax of more modern, younger and smaller engine cars.
This car In fact is 1850 euro just in road-tax alone per year. Then you are faced with sky high premiums on insurance.
But buying one is very very affordable, exactly for those reasons. I just saw a 2004 E-Class estate for 700 euro. Running and driving, no damage.
And there simply aren't any mechanics to service these cars, especially not in rural parts of the country.
Luckily I have your channel to watch these mechanical marvels and it doesn't cost me a single cent!
Always heard about this. So unfortunate. Although I find some great character in some of those small engines.
Road tax and insurance is only part of it.
Here in cheaper Switzerland I do about 25k km each year on 55 AMG and all in it costs about 700 dollars a month (parking, fuel, servicing, parking etc)
That said it is lovely to drive vs all the plastic over computerised rubbish currently on the roads
I desperately want out of the US, but it's total sh*t laws like these which keep me here. They're just money grabs. The future of driving is extremely bleak & strictly for the rich.
Quite ironic you have to live in the US to enjoy a good Euro car that doesn't have a lawnmower engine in it.
Yeah this is the infamous 1,22€ O-Ring how we called that in Germany
Was the very soft nature of the O-ring caused by too much oil, or by oil with a gasket-softening additive? Could running something like Liqui Moly LM2020 for an extended period cause this issue on an M113K?
No experience with that additive. There aren’t many additives we believe in. Liqui moly makes great stuff though. I believe this one was more likely exacerbated due to a coolant issue but no confirmation on that
Coolant needs to be correct and overheating needs to be avoided,,,as well as over filling with engine oil...
Avoid these and you won't have an issue.
@@Leo555ZZZ+1 on overheating. Lots of owners beat on their M113K to the point of of heat soaking…not the owners fault either though the engine is pretty cramped in the engine bay
Did you do oil pickup tube gasket?
Of course
@@DCMotorWerks and what would be the approximate price for rear seal, front seal, those that are in a video... Total $, approximately?

Was the motor stock? Any mods?
smaller pulley, split cooling, belt wrap, mid length headers
How did the owner not know that their coolant was vanishing? No coolant warning light or overheating?
no telling, wasn't their complaint
thanks great info.
I have owned 3 e55k and 2 of them have had this issue.
Darn im sorry to hear that!
Not an O ring, that is a "flat gasket" in a circular shape. The two are slightly different and serve different purposes. The material would have been fine had it not decomposed.
Yes. Colloquialism to call it an O-Ring
How much did this cost
Song 🎵
I broke my piston and cylinder head dropped some washer in it 2 years ago lol been a solid engine but jeez over filled the heck out of it
Drove it just the other day, runs great!
Wow! Awesome work. Just subbed.
GREAT VIDEO
In the beginning start up it reminded me of a stove 😭🤣
A stove eh?
Very interesting!
Did the engine have to come out for this?
Yes as upper oil pan needed to be removed. It could possibly be done in the car but removing the front cover without removing the upper oil pan is not advised.
@@DCMotorWerks Ah, i've seen a few videos on this. Big job regardless. Hope my gaskets lasts a while. Dont wanna dive into this yet😆 But thanks for reply.
Yea proper oil changes and coolant change probably would have prevented this
not wrong!
225 miles on my CL55
100% trouble free AND the CL has a dipstick
have s 2000 / c280/m112 engine.... got a message one day ** High Oil ** after 2 months of a personal oil change. Google said there was too much oil, I sucked out about 3oz of oil.... all fixed. I guess they dont alert anyone anymore when you have too much oil. Also kind hard to believe that engine can even hold that much oil. Learn something every day
