Now that NYS residents are applying for their non resident permit in NJ, the process has gotten longer. You don't have to qualify with each handgun. And to qualify, you don't need to shoot from 25 yards anymore. I spent +$600 to get the license, and it took about 4 months. So, good luck!
I'm an Army Veteran (infantryman ) from NYC & now living in NJ. Changing my driver's license to NJ tomorrow & will start on the process to get CCP. Wish me luck.
NJ-2yrs, $200.00 Utah, Florida, Arizona- 5 yrs. $60.00. Plastic card with picture, not paper printed by person permitted. Need permit for every firearm also.
With this extortion fee of $200, Murphy basically charges you $100 per year!! This has to be lowered to something reasonable. An example; PA, cost $25 for 5 years and none of this other BS!!
G4H member here,. Great post. I just submitted my renewal for my CCW . Wasn't too bad. My first CCW was court granted. I wanted to add a gun, so I got a town issued CCW . 200 is bad but $ 400 is basivally a pole tax and will be challenged on its unconstitutionality Thanks again for the information!! See you at the range Stand strong
It’ll be challenged and decided by a typical north east liberal judge and upheld and when appealed to the Supreme Court they’ll kick the can down the road. Just look at the stupid decision that came out of the “assault weapons” and magazine ban case. Ridiculous.
My local police chief (who, BTW is a great guy, as is the rest of my local police department) strongly suggested that even though you need to "qualify" with only one of the firearms you intend to CCW, it is strongly advisable that you qualify with each and every firearm you intend to carry for reasons of liability in the event there is a shooting and there is an allegation of negligence. For example, if you have 5 firearms that you rotate through your CCW routine, you may want to see if the organization that is serving to certify your qualification will discount your second or third CCW firearm. I also agree the processing fees if $200 or worse, $400 is being used as a deterrent and a money grab by the authorities. The fees and the processes for 5 year non-resident permits in states like Florida and Utah are a fraction of both the cost and the inconvenience (among which requalification is not required for Florida and Utah) of what New Jersey puts us through.
I was among the first in NJ to apply for a CCW permit. In addition to the fingerprints, training and stupid questions I was required to list three references. Several weeks later I received a call from my Police Department informing me that my permit was ready for me to pick up. On my way over I called all three of my references to inform them that the permit went through and to thank them for the reference. Not a single one of them had been contact by anyone about my permit. Nazi Jersey has fees for fees on top of fees. While having a CCW permit if I wish to buy a handgun it's one gun per month and a total of about $50 in fees for the application. In this case they contact the two required references each time. When my permit is available I then have to go through the "INSTANT" NICS check which is so instant that it takes 3 days and another $17 dollars. So while I'm happily walking around with a gun on me I have to go through all this BS to merely buy a gun. Welcome to Nazi Jersey.
In Nazi Jersey if you live in a town that has a police department (like me) you apply through them. You get fingerprinted by a private company then submit your application to the police. The permit is issued by the state then signed off by the local police chief. My PD is gun friendly, they called when it was ready and offered to laminate it for me when I picked it up. I’m allowed to carry it in the entire state - except for sensitive places.

We have a very 2nd amendment friendly police department. It only took two months becuase I have had multiple addresses in NY and AK within the past ten years and they had submitted mental health care checks which took up time.

Currently all applications on the NJ Portal are initial applications because NJ does not have the judge issued permits in their database. Online renewals will start in two years for those that apply online and references won't be needed for those renewals. My judge issued permit doesn't expire until next year but I recently applied online for a new permit to beat the proposed price hike and to also get rid of the judge restrictions. Since it's an initial application and not a renewal I didn't need to wait 4 months before my permit's expiration date. My references were contacted by email and they replied to the questionnaire. Make sure your references are on board with you getting a permit and that they reply promptly. The actual cost for the permit is greater than $200 due to the background check and service fees that are charged. Here's the breakdown: $50.00 paid online plus $5.00 online service fee for the CCW application. $150.00 for my town's police department which I gave a check to plus $18.00 for the 212A background check plus $3.00 online service fee. So it's $76 paid online and $150 to my town's police for a total of $226.00.
@@JayCostaUSA Yes, the courts stopped issuing them in the first half of 2023. See Supplement to Directive #14-22, written April 3, 2023. (It concerns having courts approve amendments to existing permits.) Courts still hear appeals of PD-denied permits, though.
I have until November, but I’m on the fence since I can barely carry anywhere I go. I got my PA and Utah permits (both 5 years) and if I lived in any of the 33 states I can carry in, I wouldn’t hesitate. I don’t care amount the money, but the hassle of renewing and the limited places I can carry have me considering getting out of this lousy state.

I just completed my renewal online. I'm slightly over 2 months prior to expiration of my initial court-issued permit. The NJSP website has not been updated to address renewals (like not at all). You have to go through everything again, as if you are getting your initial permit (including listing make, model, caliber and serial # of the weapons you wish to carry). Furthermore, you have to add 4 references. The only good thing is it appears as though they email them immediately (most likely it's automated). The online filing fee is $68 + $150 to the issuing police dept. So total cost to renew (not including if you need to re-certify - I did not), is now $218 (as of 9/5/24). NJ's application process is quite onerous simply to exercise you 2nd Amendment right, when you even mention voter ID people lose their minds talking about infringing on, chilling, and disenfranchising voters... It's a disgrace.
Can’t complain on permit waits in Woodbridge township. For my FID and two permits in two weeks. I applied for my CCW in April and got it in 7 days or so… Also the prices and wait times are long don’t let that discourage anyone wanting to carry. Also if anyone is interested I got a non resistent PA carry permit 20 dollars plus online service fee for 5 years and it’s ready the next day
A+ Video. In other words Jay NJ carriers expiring next summer should apply now for renewel instead of waiting next year prior to the 4 months expiration to avoid re-certification record again correct?
NYC is like that now. Before you can't even carry, not sure about the new laws. Ridiculous fees in NJ, just like NYC. NY State is much easier, that is if you are outside the city. Moved to Philadelphia and paid $20 (good for 5 yrs) and approved in 2 days for a license to carry permit. Starting a 'real' gun collection now, and I can train for real. Not that target crap at 25 yards just to qualify, I'm talking about using the gun proficiency and safely. Go do some IDPA matches.
I have been taking some tactical courses at GunforHire in Woodland Park. Urban Pistol 1, Drawing from COncealment, etc. USPSA matches are on my radar, for sure!
@@JayCostaUSA One other note, buy a bunch of AR lower's before they make you have to register them. Even pistol caliber carbines lower's should be a good idea to stock up. They just past the law in Upstate NY that all AR style rifles must be registered. What that means is that is NJ might follow that same infringement to the 2A. Always good to stock up on magazines as well. Good to have those items grandfathered in...keep the receipts. IDPA is what Jeff Cooper originally wanted, ordinary guns and holsters, not these 10k race guns they are competing with today. You will need a back up gun just in case you get a catastrophic malfunction.
My police department requires me to requalify even though I did an initial qualification within the last 2 years. I was under the understanding that the law changed and when I did an initial qualification it was not from a holster and now the requirements changed. I understand its for safety and will requalify and must every 2 years. That's NJ.
Jay, you said we have to list all guns we tend to carry but I was told we don't as long as the guns we carry are registered legally in our name. Should we still list all guns on our application? Thanks Bob K
They can certainly ask what firearms and serial numbers you intend to carry but it is perfectly legal to just leave that blank or not tell them since you can carry any handgun that you legally own (once the permit is issued obv). Idk if the process has changed since it went online but I just left that part blank when I submitted my physical paperwork when I got mine. **for carry permits issued by town PDs. I believe if issued by a judge you are limited to what serial numbers they say you can carry.
Correct, but honestly they already have info on what serial numbers we own, so I would rather be safe than sorry God forbid I was facing a charge with a gun not on the list.
Great video. So even though u are applying online to the state police, the package some how finds its way to local police? ,also as far as references, those pages were originally downloaded and submitted to my local PD. Mine expires in Jan of 25 ,so I will try the beginning of Oct.thanks
There is no “renewal” per say yet. Those of us with court issued permits will have to apply under the new system. Applying as an initial applicant as if you never had a PTC before. I know you know that, just clarifying for the people that don’t.
Also you are luck as a retired Police Officer I have to qualify four times a year. Two day courses and two night course with at least 3 months separation between them. And I have to submit them to the state police each year. We also have to shoot from the 25 yard line. Not just the 15. Everything else is the same for renewals with forms.
Non-Resident through NJSP Totowa. Btw officially the permits must be approved in 90 days with the ability to extend an extra 30 days on written notice.
Moved to PA in 2021 but I go to NJ on weekends because all my friends are there. I’m Pro-2A all the way and want to be protected, so I received my CCW back in March 2023. I had no idea they changed the qualification (of course, it’s NJ) last year which effectively voids my permit, which would have been good until March 2025, and now I have to pay this crooked, corrupt state again and repeat the entire process. Hopefully all of this goes to the courts again and NJ is sued and utterly embarrassed and has to change their anti-Constitutional wayward ways to be like the better and more sane states in our union.
Also my understanding is that the judge said it’s not necessary to register the handguns you intend to carry similar to the way the law was changed from only being able to carry what you qualified with Correct me if I’m wrong
NJ here have a non resident Utah I’m just waiting in no hurry to get NJ .I work in Del so I’m not in NJ a lot and besides when I go to NC all the time my Utah is good
Charging residents of New Jersey exorbitant fees is their back door method of gun control. I live in a small town in Pennsylvania and the cost for a concealed carry license is $20.00 for a period of 5 years. The turn around time is anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks.
Another prisoner of NJ for the time being How many months in advance do you recommend starting the renew our CCW Also, since requalification was required by the Stare Police later again in the process I was at least 6 Mos into my permit so it should be good 6 mos into my first so I don’t have to requalify for the first 6 mos or the entire 2 year period? Thanks ✌️
Regarding the updates on handgun information at 3:20. Does this mean you cannot carry any handguns purchased after being issued your ccw? Do you know of any other way to update the list before renewal?
Even though you are renewing, you are filing an "initial" application because this will be the first time you are filing online. They don't make that clear online.
@@JayCostaUSA I just renewed through the PD. My First was from a judge. The first took 63 days and the renewal took 22. They email you the permit and you print it.

I cannot find a county in Pennsylvania that is close to NJ that is non resident freindly. Perhaps you can figure out a way for us NJ folks to get our Pennsylvania permits? Just saying. I go into that state often its a shame i cant bring my gun with me.love to see a video on that

I'm in Rutherford. I just got mine in May 2024. Also, if I give you my email, would you be able to send me an updated list of places I can carry in NJ?
Sounds like there is a loophole for the first renewal for qualifications ? Can use the first qualification you took almoay 2 years ago , as long as submit renewal at within that 4 month prior period ?
@@JayCostaUSA yes it is. I got my CCW prior to FL having Constitutional carry. I will continue retaining and renewing it since it has reciprocity in about 35 other states. Of course NJ isn’t one of them though. 🙄
It’s no wonder this extortion is still being allowed. Look at how long it took for the unconstitutional practice of “may issue” to finally get overturned.
So because totowa is taking so long to issue my permit 6+months. I’m going to have to retake training when I come up for renewal? That’s complete bullshit.

What a joke NJ is, is anyone suing the state to abolish all the bullshit needed to get a CCW? TN passed constitutional carry 3 years ago. I still took the CCW test to get my permit for reciprocity reasons. But I don’t see anyone fighting NJ’s bullshit requirements and/or sensitive places BS. Unreal how for 40 years you could not carry a gun in the state, how can 2A rights go denied for so long? Also, I paid 100 for a 8 year permit, for $300 I can get a lifetime permit, still BS tho

Can’t complain on permit waits in Woodbridge township. For my FID and two permits in two weeks. I applied for my CCW in April and got it in 7 days or so…
Also the prices and wait times are long don’t let that discourage anyone wanting to carry.
Unfortunately you cannot apply until 4 months prior to renewal. Thanks for the kind words and for watching!
@@JayCostaUSA Thank you. Hopefully be granted for no re-cert when applying 4 months prior. Keep up the great work
I used to live in NJ. My happiest day there was the day I left for Florida.
Daym, I better start saving for my renewal next year if that's the case.
That's NJ.
Yes it has to follow the CCare Protocol of qualification now. What town are you in?
In MN it is about in total renewal fee + course += $200.00 every 4 years.
Jay, you said we have to list all guns we tend to carry but I was told we don't as long as the guns we carry are registered legally in our name. Should we still list all guns on our application? Thanks Bob K
I dont think you have to give them all of them, but it does ask on the application. Not 100% sure on that though. Carry on!
I just renewed on 10/12/24
It did ask me to list the guns I would carry with serial numbers ,make, model ,caliber.
Yep, exactly. Thanks for watching!
There is no “renewal” per say yet. Those of us with court issued permits will have to apply under the new system. Applying as an initial applicant as if you never had a PTC before. I know you know that, just clarifying for the people that don’t.
Yup, for now anyway. i think there will be a renewal application separate when more PD issued permits are coming up for renewal.
Also you are luck as a retired Police Officer I have to qualify four times a year. Two day courses and two night course with at least 3 months separation between them. And I have to submit them to the state police each year. We also have to shoot from the 25 yard line. Not just the 15. Everything else is the same for renewals with forms.
every 3 months?? Wow, I did not know that. You cant apply as a civilian?
I put in my non-resident FID on 3/3 and my PTC on 6/8 - still waiting on both.
No FID yet? Wow. What town?
Non-Resident through NJSP Totowa. Btw officially the permits must be approved in 90 days with the ability to extend an extra 30 days on written notice.
Great information. I'll need to renew next July 2025
Come to the GUNSHINE state no permits needed carry on any day!!
Moving to PA
Dont blame you
Vote accordingly!
Also my understanding is that the judge said it’s not necessary to register the handguns you intend to carry similar to the way the law was changed from only being able to carry what you qualified with
Correct me if I’m wrong
NJ here have a non resident Utah I’m just waiting in no hurry to get NJ .I work in Del so I’m not in NJ a lot and besides when I go to NC all the time my Utah is good
FYI, Utah is constitutional carry now, so an NJ works there. I know Utah has some reciprocity though, as well. Thanks for watching!
Charging residents of New Jersey exorbitant fees is their back door method of gun control. I live in a small town in Pennsylvania and the cost for a concealed carry license is $20.00 for a period of 5 years. The turn around time is anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks.
Yes I agree. If they are forced to issue carry permits this is how they restrict us, among other ways. Thanks for watching!
I had to fill out 4 references and the state police did require my references to fill them out and return them.
Another prisoner of NJ for the time being
How many months in advance do you recommend starting the renew our CCW
Also, since requalification was required by the Stare Police later again in the process
I was at least 6
Mos into my permit so it should be good 6 mos into my first so I don’t have to requalify for the first 6 mos or the entire 2 year period?
For now, Yes. I think when we get closer to the PD issued permits having to be renewed there will be a renewal application on the website.
@@JayCostaUSA I just renewed through the PD. My First was from a judge. The first took 63 days and the renewal took 22. They email you the permit and you print it.
That's a lot of money 💰 I hope hope something is done about this
God willing, Thanks for watching!
Ill worry about this in the fall. Mine expires January
Do you have a court issued permit or PD issued?
@@JayCostaUSA court issued. What about it?
@@JayCostaUSAquestion how would you know ?
Do you have to qualify each ccw or does having the permit mean you can carry any pistol you own?
You can carry any pistol
Do you need a CCW just to carry a BB glock gun in public?
Honestly, I do not know anything about BB guns
Heres one for you.having the NJ permit qualifies you for a Pennsylvania permit. In Pennsylvania its handled by the county sheriff. I cannot find a county in Pennsylvania that is close to NJ that is non resident freindly. Perhaps you can figure out a way for us NJ folks to get our Pennsylvania permits? Just saying. I go into that state often its a shame i cant bring my gun with me.love to see a video on that
No I believe the NJ permit does not work in PA. Check out the CCW app it is great.
I know the NJ permit does not work In PA. To get a PA permit u must have a permit in your home state. So having a NJ permit I cannot find a county in PA that is non resident friendly. That is what I am asking you for
Try York county Pa
Pike county pretty good....
I'm in Rutherford. I just got mine in May 2024. Also, if I give you my email, would you be able to send me an updated list of places I can carry in NJ?
Sure, Thanks for watching. email me at info@realjaycosta.com
Good job!!! As usual!
Sounds like there is a loophole for the first renewal for qualifications ? Can use the first qualification you took almoay 2 years ago , as long as submit renewal at within that 4 month prior period ?
Florida is good for seven years and costs $170 first time and my renewal was $140.
Isnt Florida constitutional carry now?
@@JayCostaUSA yes it is. I got my CCW prior to FL having Constitutional carry. I will continue retaining and renewing it since it has reciprocity in about 35 other states. Of course NJ isn’t one of them though. 🙄
It’s no wonder this extortion is still being allowed. Look at how long it took for the unconstitutional practice of “may issue” to finally get overturned.
So because totowa is taking so long to issue my permit 6+months. I’m going to have to retake training when I come up for renewal? That’s complete bullshit.
6 months is crazy. I would start getting lawyer involved if they are not being cooperative.
Mines coming up soon🙄🧐
which town?
Hey buddy I just tried renewing my ccw on FARS in nj i went through everything uploading photo and my safe handling all that shit I clicked continue and brought me back to start application any clues on this issue should I try to do it again I was waiting to pay $200 now wtf instead of $50 lol any ideas
Jay when I did my ccw I needed 3 references will it be the same or will I have to put one more
I would NEVER live in a state that does not allow me to practice my Second Amendment Rights for free, or limit what I can carry.
Agreed.
Pretty easy if you’re dealing with Toms River PD
My date of qualification was 7/18/2022, my permit was issued on 11/01/22, exp on 11/01/24. Can I just renew or do I have to re-qualify?
Will another in class use of force and safe storage certificate needed for renewal?
I didn’t realize there was an expiration date on my constitutional rights.
You aint kidding.
Cost me $162.50 per year as a retired NJ cop 62.50$ permit fee and 2x$50 for quals= 162.50
By the way,,Today the Majority of states had or recently voted back some form of permit less carry of firearms..My State went permit less concealed carry last July first..FL.
It's absolutely unconstitutional to require a permit to exercise your Rights, let alone charge you for it.
I agree. But we do the best with what we have and continue to fight. Thanks for watching!
Your police department code is the ORI number.
yep, link in description
Is cheaper if you move from the state?
Doubt it. I will make a video on non resident permits soon.
Anyone on Long Island NY looking to apply for their PTC, I’m an NRA Instructor and do the training in Nassau and Suffolk County so you don’t need to take the drive out to NJ. Save the drive and the hassle of transporting your pistol into NJ.
There was no increase on fees !!!!
Correct! Great news
I want to apply for my nj license I already have my nyc
they make it expensive because they don't want you having them so they make you think twice going through a lengthy process
Thanks for this video We appreciate you.. Smh 🤦🏻♀️ so next year Ill have to pay the higher fee great, since I obtained mines in 2023… I obtained my Non Resident Utah CCW its cheaper and it last 5 years which is mind blowing. The Utah Non Resident CCW is an actual idea card like your Drivers license not like NJ CCW or FID card that we have to print out on copy paper and laminated… crazy moons again NJ FID cards were 100% better.
I was just in SLC two weeks ago. LOVED it.
Can you elaborate on the Non Resident Utah CCW? I had a great time at the ranges there.
@@mannyv.2769 sure as long as you have your CCW you can apply for the Utah Non Resident CCW you will have to so training and get fingerprints done for Utah and with this Non Resident CCW you can carry in 32 states I did my training in NJ with my CCW trainer
bci.utah.gov/concealed-firearm/how-do-i-apply-for-a-concealed-firearm-permit/
@@mannyv.2769Utah non-resident is pretty easy to a 4 hour class, $64 application fee and it’s approved in about 60 days. You just need to make sure you’ve got a licensed Utah Concealed Firearms Instructor giving the class as they need to certify your application with their signature and a special stamp. I have the instructor license for Utah and do classes here in Ny. It’s a ton of fun because they don’t have all the gun hate in UT law. So we get to make fun of local state craziness.
@@traderpete007 Opted to change my license from NYC to NJ since it's easier to get a handgun permit in NJ (and since I'm now living here).
@@mannyv.2769NYC is cool because you can carry throughout NYS where other counties get everything except NYC - but most NYS permits are only $50 for 3 years with the off one being Nassau at $200 for 3 years. NY does not offer a non-resident nor do you get any bonus state reciprocity like
NJ gives you MN. I currently have NY, CT, PA, NH, ME, VA, FL, AZ and UT waiting on NJ and working on MD
It's called make the license so cost prohibited that most people just give up because it's better to disarm every one except for the ones making the laws!
Glad I moved out of NJ years ago........
Yeah the fees associated with the application process are redonkculous.
JC, you’re giving the wrong info. An SBI number is the number on your permit.
Yes, error on my part. I will try to correct.
@@JayCostaUSA
Jay, here is the breakdown
SBI # is on FID card
ORI # is assigned to the town you live in, that's how they get the results mailed to the correct pd...
Heavy fees are not gun regulations. It’s just punishing the working class.
I will just carry without getting a permit if it goes up to 400 dollars
That’s not a good idea especially knowing NJ is a hard blue state.
It is no longer worth it. The state should be sued for charging ANYTHING to practice our so called rights.
New Jersey and New York are crazy, Connecticut is blue state filled with gun control nuts and isn't that bad. I'm a Pennsylvania resident with a Connecticut non-resident permit, and it doesn't cost that much and gives me 6yrs and isn't complicated at all. As a matter of fact my Fla carry isn't that much, with my home state being the best at 20 bucks for 5yrs.
We will keep fighting here as they consistently assault our 2a rights.
I don’t understand how this unconscionable fee is not a violation of our second amendment rights? Murphy is making it so expensive that people can’t afford the fees…so in theory only the wealthy can afford the fees but not someone who is poor and this is being allowed?
..... Permit?
I’m from NJ, lived there for 40 years and never could exercise my 2A rights, uninfringed. I moved to TN 8!years ago and have numerous firearms and “high capacity magazines”.
So... NJ extorts 6 million in permit fees for 30,000 residents, ok got it. 🙄
pretty much.
It’s not a right when you have to pay for it.
PA, 20$ for 5 years. Time to change the license plate slogan in NJ to "NJ the RAPE state"
