From Don's 3rd solo album, "The End of the Innocence", this is a beautiful lyrical song with such soothing instrumentation. Mike Campbell, Tom Petty's guitarist cut the track at home, and played it for Henley. He previously co-wrote " Boys of Summer" with Don, so obviously they had a great working relationship. Don wrote some words with J D. Souther and changed the key to suit him. They both had suffered some love loss, so I think the lyrics did come from "the heart of the matter". The vocals are so beautiful, so magical in their delivery along with the lovely melody. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Cathy. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Thanks Mary. JD Souther was brilliant in his own right. Love his performance on "Her Town Too" doing backup vocals for James Taylor, and also "A Black and White Night" with Roy Orbisson. Great request Cathy.
Henley has that gorgeous honey throated growl, but Randy Meisner sang the lead vocal on, "Take It to the Limit". Sadly Meisner passed not too long ago. Imho he put the Eagles on the map with TTTL. " Heart of the the Matter", speaks to the resignation of the end of the love affair. You're right Harri...this song speaks to us all, anyone who has loved, and lost.
I love Take It To The Limit and Randy Meisner but they had already had some of their biggest hits by the time that came out. I think the song was on the One Of These Nights album.
From a great album, and this is my favorite song off that album! The message touches my heart "it's about forgiveness." As always and forever, thank you Harri!
Best cut from a great album. DH showed he can be a great solo artist. Along the lines of the Moody Blues breakup, Justin Hayward & John Lodge did Blue Jay's. When they reunited, they were still great. Same deal with Henly & the Eagles.
There are people in your life who come and go they let you down ya know they hurt your pride you better put it all behind you baby cause life goes on you keep carring that anger it eat you up inside baby
Love this song & it was even better when the Eagles did it live with just guitars . If you ever get a chance to watch Hell Freeze over they do this song beautiful.
Don's voice is impeccable. U don't have to see him to know his voice, even in songs u've never heard. This man could sing Old McDonald had a farm & sell millions of copies.
Who hasn’t had a heartache and not embraced this beautiful song? Henley and The vocals are just so timely, so angelical sounding. This song is one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded. And One from U2, can’t decide which is more sublime.
though i am not disagreeing with your prose, i am attempting to add to its point.u2, has been much more boistrus. those songs are not as much in the singers or the musicians in point.
Thanks Harri. Happy to see you reacting to this. The End Of The Innocence" is a great album. Also check out the title track, "New York Minute" and my favorite off the album "The Last Worthless Evening".
Thank you Harri and thank you Cathy. There is not a dry eye in the house and I'm the only one in the house. LOL. This song really hits home and continues to be current in my life. I am the one working on forgiveness and let me tell you, it isn't always easy but it is something I am working towards. In the words of the great Pete Townsend "You are all forgiven".
Hey Cathy! Thanks for requesting this. It’s one of my favorite all time songs and I’m amazed that it didn’t get blocked. What a great song. What a fantastic album. Nice reaction. Thanks Harri and Cathy 🌺✌️
This song really helped me when my first wife jettisoned me. It's about forgiveness, even if you don't love me any more. In fine, it's not about you, it's about me and my heart.
Bitterness is like taking poison and expecting the other person to get sick. Gotta learn to let go for yourself more than anyone else. Such a great song.
One of Don’s best. Comes from the heart and sings to our souls. Take it To the Limit by Randy Meisner who was an original member of the band and had the best vocals. He left after getting get up with the in fighting between band members and not giving him the respect he should have had while in the band!
the album this is from, THE END OF THE INNOCENCE, is my favourite of henley's. it brings me straight back to the summer of '89 in europe, so wonderful ❤ this song was co-written with mike campbell and j.d. souther. it features tom petty and the heartbreakers members mike on guitars & keyboards and stan lynch on drums. also: just a slight correction, harri. the eagles "take it to the limit" was actually sung by randy meisner, who just recently passed away. it still is my favourite eagles song. thanks for the trip down memory lane 💕
To me his finest solo dingle outside the Eagles, along with Boys of Summer!!! Don's voice is so jazzy, bluesy, smoky joe's cafe type sound and I have adored it since i first heard it in 1971. BTW, Eagles came to my small hometown of 30,000 souls and a small college long about 72 or 73. I was there. They gave a stunning concert featuring , at that time, two of their just released singles, Take It Easy and Peaceful Essy feeling. I was hooked then and still am today, in 2023.❤Don and Glen and the guys rule.
This song is a great reminder for me not to take my wife for granted. I'm a full-time truck driver and spend 1-2 weeks at a time between weekends at home.
bought this cassette on a whim in '89 and it turned out to be a true gem. 'the last worthless evening' was stellar but ' new york minute ' blew me right away and still does. his best song imo. and also let's include 'the boys of summer' in that list of greats
Cathy - This was a terrific submission by one of the past five decades' most talented vocalists and musicians.👏 I had it in my head that all Eagles and Don Henley songs were getting blocked. This is one of my favorites of many from Don Henley. Harri, Your review was top-notch.
Looking back at this i truly believe this very song was the Genesis of the killing of my ego. Although not recognizing it as such it bore into my sole and set me upon quest. I still strive for full forgiveness in all encounters. The last of which working on forgiving myself due to my ego based behaviors.
Mike Campbell (Tom Petty) and JD Souther contributed to this song. Although Henley has never revealed it, it's about his breakup with actress Maren Jensen (Battlestar Galactica) with whom he'd been involved since the early '80s. If Maren Jensen left me, I'd be pretty sad too. Thanks Cathy and Harri.
I used to love this song when I was 19 and didn't have a care in the world..Now, at 44, it makes me miss my dad (who introduced me to REAL music) and many special people who have come into my life and left 😢
I'm sorry but this song is not about being wronged by another. The song starts by saying he "heard an old friend of ours talking on the phone, she said you'd found someone.", talking about his ex. This is not about betrayal, it's about coming to terms with the ex moving on and forgiving that she doesn't love him anymore. And accepting he has to get past grudges because of the breakup and forgiving so it doesn't "eat you up inside", like the song says. Peace.
Exactly! This song is for all of us who have been through divorce after many years together that line "and I thought about all the bad luck and the struggles we went through and how I lost me and you lost you" gets me every time
It’s talking about both. They both wronged each other. “What are all the voices outside love’s open door…Make us throw off our contentment and beg for something more…” You become content in a marriage and at some point, whatever the reason, some people look for something more that that and leave. I have never been divorced and that still hits home. You don’t forgive someone if they haven’t wronged you in a way, even if you brought it on yourself. It’s talking about letting go, not just of the relationship, but the bitterness that stemmed from the separation.
I’m surprised this has stayed up. Don is the hard ass that wants stuff copyrighted! He and the record label must be on vacation! Props to you for getting it up!!
My wife cheated on me and we're getting a divorce. I have had this song on infinite replay on Spotify. I've been listening to this song for 30 years, and it's only now that the lyrics actually hold meaning for me, and I wasn't sure why. You hit the nail on the head ... we continue to love those who've hurt us. I hurt her back and she says she doesn't love me any more and doesn't ever want to see me again. But I will still forgive her ... even if she doesn't love me any more.
I wish I had adequate words for you. I don't. All I can say is to forgive yourself too. There may be a time that you can share a few kind words with her but for now, try to move forward.
I think one key line is " and the work I put between us, you know it doesn't keep me warm " shows that, whatever happened, he feels a measure of responsibility for her not loving him anymore. And now, true forgiveness will allow them both to move forward and find happiness in the years yet to come. Even if she doesn't love him anymore.
I love this song. I recently learned that the foundation of the song was written by Mike Campbell of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. He gave it to Don Henley, and Henley finished it. So good. 👍
I love the message in the song. The music isn't enough. It always has a message, sometimes buried very deep. The Moody Blues is meditation music. We too many times bury our better realities by bombing our senses with drugs or music or anything. Come out of the box. To Our Children's Children is about that hope that someone will rise above this worldly system and see himself as a new person.
In the same vein and even more powerful is Springsteen’s Brilliant Disguise. The album was basically about his marriage falling apart. The video of this single was just him with his guitar in his kitchen so emblematic of a person going through that tragedy. Like most Springsteen’s song, there are a few classic lines that will last through time. “god have mercy…”
Strongly recommend "New York Minute", "the Last Worthless Evening" and "End of the Innocence" all from his 1989 record End of the Innocence. All are more like ballads than some of his early 80's singles, but absolutely beautiful.
Thanks, Harri (and Cathy), for bringing up this song. One more heartfelt analysis,- but what I like most is your sometimes almost lyrical way to talk, thus creating true and brillant song lyrics: But in a crazy way - he still loves her, and I think that's a very very common thing. Sometimes the people that hurt us the most are the ones we just keep on giving all our love to.
I'll be surprised if this video stays up as Henley and the Eagles are notorious for blocking songs/copyright strikes. That being said love this song and his voice
I haven't heard this in such a long time, but always loved it and found it so moving. And it still moves me. Such stunningly beautiful lyrics combined his sincere vocals, and that gorgeous melody. Perfection ❤
Great reaction & analysis, Harri! The Eagles were just here with Steely Dan the 17th, but unfortunately wasn't able to go. It's usually a great concert (even after the passing of Glen, it's still 3 hours!) & Henley usually plays quite a few solo songs.🎼
I forgot how much this song means to me. If you can, give the live 'Hell Freezes Over' version a whirl. The emotion Don sings with tells you he lived through every word, and still is living through the heartbreaking heartache and trying to repair, make amends to just get better for tomorrow, for love
No, the lead singer for Take it to the limit, was the late Randy Meissner RIP. Don Henley performed his solo hits at The Eagles concerts. I went to one in Sydney Australia. Check out, New York minute
It’s not limited to a romantic relationship and it’s about those who have been wronged learning to forgive and move on for their own emotional benefit.
Would like for you to do a review on legendary greatest jazz guitarist Wes Montgomery Bumpin on Sunset, A day in the life . The eagles was a great group.
we forgive those who hurt us the most, only as they were the ones that we loved so much. part of us wants to give them a pass, because maybe they will love us again. the other part, is part of letting go of that person, without the need for their love. and then after we realize that they will never love us again, we can let them go, and love them in loss.
If you read through the lyrics, he's assigning a fair share of blame to himself as well. "Pride and competition, cannot fill these empty arms, And the work I put between us, you know it doesn't keep me warm". And really, accepting that at least part of a breakup was your own darn fault, fueled by your own choices or neglect, can make it a lot easier to forgive your ex. And hopefully can mean you've learned the necessary lessons in advance of your next relationship.
Don Henley definitely had some solo bangers! This was a great album.
A favorite one.
Classic album.
From Don's 3rd solo album, "The End of the Innocence", this is a beautiful lyrical song with such soothing instrumentation.
Mike Campbell, Tom Petty's guitarist cut the track at home, and played it for Henley. He previously co-wrote " Boys of Summer" with Don, so obviously they had a great working relationship.

mike also played guitar and keyboards on this track.
One of my favorites from Don....along with The Boys of Summer!🎶
@@kthor I agree. 100%. 2 brilliant tunes. 👍✌️🎶🇨🇦
My favorite Henley song was Last Worthless Evening. Beautiful song.
Played Last worthless evening the night before I got married. Will be married 30 years soon.
If there's one other song Harri should react to, it would be the live performance of Meisner singing "Take It to the Limit", circa 1977.
@@dusty4835 But hopefully, not the only one!! 😊
I love Take It To The Limit and Randy Meisner but they had already had some of their biggest hits by the time that came out. I think the song was on the One Of These Nights album.

Forgiveness. ❤ thanks. Don Henly always touches my heart.

Whew, takes me back to a heartbreak from years past. Just bittersweet now; a lovely song.
Yes, the live version is much better!
I have the “Hell Freezes Over” DVD. It’s great!
One of my top 10 songs of all time. He says it took 43 years to write and 3 minutes to sing. Thank you Harri
Whale and Jada Smith, Jada pinkett smith?
I like that song, almost not quite. Sarah most as much as I pay. It's a pancake party as a pancake party b I m kaya a t t party
Don's voice is impeccable. U don't have to see him to know his voice, even in songs u've never heard. This man could sing Old McDonald had a farm & sell millions of copies.
New York Minute: his very best

"How can love survive in such a graceless age?"
Indeed.
Great pick! ❤
This song got me through my divorce in 1991. It still brings tears to my eyes.
Me also
Love Don Henley! Between his Great Vocals and the Band’s Great Instrumentalist they just Couldn’t Lose!
Thanks Harri. Happy to see you reacting to this. The End Of The Innocence" is a great album. Also check out the title track, "New York Minute" and my favorite off the album "The Last Worthless Evening".
“The Last Worthless Evening” is my other favorite from the album.
I remember when he brought this to the Hell freezes Over concert. Played with his old group brought this song to a whole 'nother level.

Don is one of the True Greats. A totally singular voice that has been on top of the charts for 30 years.
Yep, he's absolutely top notch.
Just to give credit where credit is due, however, "Take It To The Limit" is sung by bassist Randy Meisner.
This song really helped me when my first wife jettisoned me. It's about forgiveness, even if you don't love me any more. In fine, it's not about you, it's about me and my heart.

Exactly!
He is a Notorious Blocker.
Awwww Don Henley💜 This is such a beautiful song! Been on my playlist for years but haven’t heard it in awhile. Sure brings back some memories.
Definitely a great song from a "Bedrock" album, for me, during a very low period in my life.
Listen to the acoustic version from Hell Freezes Over. Tremendous!
His voice is like velvet❤❤
Love this song. Thank Harri!
My wife cheated on me and we're getting a divorce. I have had this song on infinite replay on Spotify. A Legend is Don Henley. The voice of Hotel California 😘😘😘😘😘

My top Henley solo tune. Take it to the limit was actually sung by their original bassist, Randy Meisner.

Love your interpreting his words straight away.

That voice,Eagle harmonies the best!😊
A gripping song that grabs the heart. Emotional. Great song, voice and guitars.
Love this song. Takes me back to when I was twelve
Great reaction! "End of the Innocence" should be next!
In the same vein and even more powerful is Springsteen’s Brilliant Disguise.

“god have mercy…”
What an amazing voice❤️❤️❤️❤️
I love this song! His voice is amazing, but the meaning is just as good. It gets to me every time I hear it.
Strongly recommend "New York Minute", "the Last Worthless Evening" and "End of the Innocence" all from his 1989 record End of the Innocence. All are more like ballads than some of his early 80's singles, but absolutely beautiful.
Don Henley's solo stuff is outstanding. You should try YOU DON'T KNOW ME AT ALL, BOYS OF SUMMER, IN A NEW YORK MINUTE.
All great lyrics and vocals.
One of my ALL TIME FAVORITES!! The Eagles were my jam. This song is so relevant to broken relationships. 😊
It truly is about forgiveness, even if you don't like or love me anymore.
Thanks, Harri (and Cathy), for bringing up this song. One more heartfelt analysis,- but what I like most is your sometimes almost lyrical way to talk, thus creating true and brillant song lyrics:
But in a crazy way - he still loves her,
and I think that's a very very common thing.
Sometimes the people that hurt us the most
are the ones we just keep on giving all our love to.
Love this song, it hit home breaking up with the person I thought I’d marry. A year later we reconnected and will be married 30 years soon.
Great reaction & analysis, Harri! The Eagles were just here with Steely Dan the 17th, but unfortunately wasn't able to go. It's usually a great concert (even after the passing of Glen, it's still 3 hours!) & Henley usually plays quite a few solo songs.🎼
I grew up hearing this song and returning to it recently, it hit different, especially the part when he said “the ashes will scatter”
I forgot how much this song means to me.
If you can, give the live 'Hell Freezes Over' version a whirl. The emotion Don sings with tells you he lived through every word, and still is living through the heartbreaking heartache and trying to repair, make amends to just get better for tomorrow, for love
When he sings “ Mel’s Barnyard “, I almost cried !
Don Henley's lyrics and melodies are amazing! If you haven't, please react to The End of the Innocence, my fav Henley solo song.
Great lyrics + fantastic vocals = Classic Song ❤
One of my favorites!! Did you hear India Irie’s version???
"And I thought of all the bad luck and struggles we went through / How I lost you and you lost you" Some powerful lyrics there.
Saw Don solo in 91. Still one of the top shows of my life.
i got to see him in concert for this album ❤ he's fabulous...lol...it was a bit ago ;)
Sunset grill is my favorite
My favorite song by him
A favorite of mine! Thanks!
Henley's best recording, IMO.
No, the lead singer for Take it to the limit, was the late Randy Meissner RIP.
Don Henley performed his solo hits at The Eagles concerts. I went to one in Sydney Australia.
Check out,
New York minute
Minor squabble….Randy Meisner sang “Take it to the Limit.”
Now his voice made me think of Brian Adams! ☺☺
Great song
Don Henley said on one of the concerts that it took him 10 minutes to write the song and 42 years to sing it ❤
I thought it was 42 years to write - because the song is a compilation of lifes experience.
42 years to write, about 4 minutes to sing.
True but J.D. Souther co wrote this song.
So yeah it most likely took 10 minutes
Next please review his song Dirty Laundry.
As others have said, Randy Meisner sang lead on 'Take it to the Limit.' When the Eagles resumed playing it live around 2000 Glenn Frey sang lead.
Can’t believe it was chosen by Cathy. It’s the name of the woman this song makes me think of . Makes it hit harder.
It’s not limited to a romantic relationship and it’s about those who have been wronged learning to forgive and move on for their own emotional benefit.
One thing that blew my mind on this album was seeing that Guns & Roses front man Axl Rose sang backup on "I will not go quietly"
The heart of the matter is forgiveness like Adam Reacher says his father told him, "It's a principle to live by"
It took him 42 years to write this song
😮
Check out " Garden of Allah " off the Don Henley solo album Actual miles and" The long road out of Eden " off the album of the same name. Enjoy.
not that you need to know, i love you and all who listen to this song.
Love you too!
Don didn't sing lead on "Take it to the Limit", that was Randy Meisner
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
