A personal favorite of mine is the Inter 2021 third shirt. It is inspired by the chest graphic of the 1990 away kit, but it uses different colors, a different color, and has its own unique touches that set it apart from the original version. That's how to do it! Take inspiration from a vintage kit but bring your own modern touches to it
The problem is that gradient on that PSG shirt looks like an homage of its performance in the Champion's league: Starts solid only to disappear as they go deeper in the competition. I heard that from a PSG fan mind you.
I wish Liverpool would release a home shirt inspired by their 90's kits. Instead of the plain red t shirt kits we constantly get from them that look like they've spend 10 seconds designing.
I think the hardest part in innovating and not losing sight of the past are the fans which are greatly attached to the club's history and find it difficult to move a bit forward with fear of losing some of the club's identity. You can't always please everybody, but staying in the past will surely lead to less inovation and creativity. ps: I sent an adittional attachment to your e-mail after finishing your Concept Design course at Spark Academy. These videos have been building up motivation for me to work on some more concepts for my portfolio, so I thought I'd give it a go and send it to "add" to my submitted project to you after I finished the course. Agree about the laziness of some of the 'reworked' kits. England's current red away shirt is a classic example. Its meant to reference / take inspiration from, the 1990 shirt, but it's so close to the original design that its just looks like a cheap fake of that shirt. Every time I see it I just think it looks like one of those rip off shirts you find hanging off a rail in a beach stall at Turkish holiday resort!
Johnny Cash’s cover of Hurt, by Trent Reznor surpasses the original. Now, on this topic - I like it, and I agree with your points. However, using PSG as a positive example is a bit of a cheat, since the Hechter stripe (or a traditional element such as a sash, or Arsenal’s white sleeves) is far easier to plug-in to a creative design, than a one-off pattern like Denmark/Hummel. Having said that, your points are absolutely true, and I’m being a bit of a knob for critiquing your high-quality free content, BUT I did want to add to the discussion and see if we could find a better example of a well interpreted retro design, that does not have a traditional feature such as a sash or stripes.
Innovation is rare in football kits sadly. I think of Manchester United, who I support. There's innovation but retaining the feel, the 2002 and 2005 home kits, the 2011 white away kit with red and black elements on the sleeves, they're new, modern designs but it still feels like a ManUtd kit. I really miss those big attempts. They generally land really well! For too many years with every club, it's paying homage to old kits that frequently that it gets a bit boring and the novelty is lost anyway.
Can you do a deep dive into small kit manufacturers that don’t have many teams. E.G Tor who do local south Wales teams. And see how they are trying to stand out.
Why don’t shirts have debossing (may not be the right term) on them anymore? For Liverpool we used to have liverbirds (ecru kit for example) now we just have Nike knit design every year as the only pattern and then only red shirt for stadium

Although I agree, those Hummel kits are beautiful, as is the old PSG one. Whereas that new PSG shirt is (only in my opinion obviously) hideous

Every shirt seems to have a generic geometric pattern or just be plain. Rarely get a top level club with an illustration featured in the design
