You can snap the asparagus but you don't grab it at each end. That'll just snap it in half. You snap it lower down to get rid of the tough fibrous end. What a waste.

What a waste. Green asparagus rarely gets ligneous at the bottom, so there is no need to cut off more than the part that might have dried since harvesting. Cooking it uncovered in the oven lets moisture evaporate, which makes for good jerky, yet it lacks proper marinade.

It's pretty obvious you've never cooked with asparagus before lol nice try though, but not really because you wasted about 35% of the asparagus.

To keep carrots from rolling when you are slicing them...Use the peeler and run it along the length of the carrot once or twice to form a small flat surface to lay the carrot on to slice them ! Be sure to use any clean peelings for salads : )

You mentioned a tip for cutting carrots. I have found that while peeling them take a quick second to shave off the carrot and make one side flat. You can just lay the flattened side down on the cutting board and it makes things a bit easier. And you just it the still perfectly good carrot slice you just shaved off.
    Happy cooking.

@lilawunder95 fresh herbs go bad to fast. I don't use enough to make it worth while. Unless a recipe calls for a bunch of one herb, I use the dried ones. it's way too expensive to buy a whole pack of fresh herb just to use a pinch.

  • @PotatoBokChoy

for the carrots there's a method you can do to cut them with more ease without as much danger of cutting your fingers.
when you peel them with the peeler, peel one side a little bit more to give the carrot a slightly flat surface, that way when you cut them length wise with the knife, there's a much smaller possibility of the carrot rolling around and making you cut yourself :D

@MRCOOLGAMERGUY regular salt can be too much. it's finer salt so more sticks to the veggies. Which in turn makes it saltier. Also there is a flavor difference in table salt and rock/course salt.

you know, the non eating part of the asparagus, if you mix if with the onion skins and leftovers you normally get, same with carrot peelings, you can make an awesome cheap Veg Stock, ok its thrifty but saves time prepping whole veg and money as you don't need to by more... god I'm dull for stating that

@jakatak69 If GAMERGUY is wondering, the problem is the iodine in "regular" salt. It doesn't make much difference when used at the table, but can affect the taste, colour, and crispness of cooked foods. (It's worse for brined foods - the iodine can turn them blue and give them a metal taste. Also, "regular salt" is a lot more expensive per pound than coarse salt.)
By the way, Jack, have you ever brined chicken? Easy and tasty.

@maskedmurader23 Great tip. I personally don't use a serrated knife...but it works. But I was going to suggest the same thing. And it's even easier (since this is a lazy man's video after all) to, while your pealing the carrots, just peal one side a little more than the other. But either way, great tip. It definitely makes cutting carrots (or anything round) easier. Great vid, as always, Jack!

Jack, this is awesome! Not only is roasting veggies in the oven healthy and SINFULLY EASY, it can bring out totally new flavor notes in the veggies that you can't really bring out with any other cooking method. For example, asparagus (when roasted in the oven) almost has a bit of a nutty flavor to it. It's a great way to experience veggies in a whole new way for your taste buds!
