So in the game, Frank and Bill are sort of a "negative" lesson for Joel; Bill closes himself off from emotions and the world, and Frank leaves him and ends up dead, and everything is just bad. They changed their story for this episode to deliver the same lesson in a "positive" way; Bill opens himself up to Frank and emotions, and while they do end up dead, it's on their own terms after 16 happy years together. Same lesson for Joel and the viewer, that you have to allow people into your life for it to have any point; just delivered differently.

Hi Ladies. Just wanted to point out that the weird "kiss" from the last episode was used to show what would happen if one of these zombies comes across someone who isn't resisting them. There's no need for any violence or biting; they use the simplest method available to them which would be to get those (disgusting) little mouth creepers in your mouth, which is obviously near to where the brain is. I thought it was goofy too until I saw that that's why they did it.
Big fan by the way 🙂

In the game, when you meet - and leave - Bill, he's still alive. Ellie and Joel actually have some hilarious interactions with him, which I do miss seeing in the show. Frank does exist in the game, but in a minor capacity. You can only infer what Bill and Frank were to each other based on what the game tells you. Joel doesn't know him there at all, either.
And this is where the showrunners demonstrate a clear understanding of what it means to adapt a game to a TV show. Because not only do we get a beautiful love story, we also get the impetus for Joel's entire character arc and how his relationship evolves with Ellie. It is fucking brilliant.

So to clarify the 1st and 2nd stage of the infection they can see. To the 3rd stage onwards they can't, because the cordyceps grows over their eyes!

It seems to grow through their eyes and their skull rather than over them.

    • @Alex-gn6ii
      @Alex-gn6ii Рік тому +7

It doesn't grow over anything. The fungus is a parasite and it gains nutrients from its host body. The cordyceps literally eats the human from the inside out in order to complete its own life cycle. If you reference back to the first episode exposition from the 1968 interview they give you the explanation. The fungus eats the host to grow up into a big strong mushroom. It controls the host in order to place the fungus in the optimal environment for reproduction (i.e. spreading the infection to other hosts). In order to extend the time available for the fungus to successfully reproduce, it grows inside of its host to replace lost functions from the organs, meat, etc that it consumes. We can confirm this through examination of the various infected we've come across. The mass hordes of infected gathering to share resources (more meat for the fungus) while in wait for more host contacts to be discovered. This 3rd episode we can see the fungus replacing the flesh and bone during Ellie's "dissection". During extensively long infections we see the fungus bloom and mutate into the clickers. These parasitic relationship developments serve to make its host more effective transmitters of the fungus. Most of the flesh has been devoured and replaced by the parasite. However, the fungus has grown in a manner that amplifies the hosts sensitivities to sound.
Observing these cases of infection, it's fair to assume that the fungus has specifically evolved to sustain itself on very specific parts of the host and use hallucinogens to rewrite the hosts brain to control and preserve motor functions. When a specific infected is very successful in its life cycle we see the advanced stages of infection. When it is unsuccessful, we see it starve and die off like the entry and stairway of the museum.

Actually, it's stage 2 of the infection when the infected persons vision begins to be changed by the cordyceps starting to cover the victims' eyes and face. This is the infected that Ellie finds trapped under rubble. You can see the cordyceps growing out and over its face and the one remaining eye which is dimmed by the infection but can still see Ellie and follow the motion of the knife she waves at it. In stage 3 after surviving a year of infection their face is covered and scarred, finally blinding them and causing them to develop a rudimentary form of echo location. Here are the 7 stages of infected. ua-cam.com/video/i1FGWQt1kkA/v-deo.html
Here is the BBC documentary about cordyceps that Neil Druckman saw and inspired his creation of the infected for the game. ua-cam.com/video/o57imEfknMQ/v-deo.html

That's a situation where he probably thought he could never be happy again in, and he's suddenly found his soulmate (someone who loves fine dining, wine, music, and clearly him). He's getting a level of happiness that he probably thought he would never have again--crying is a perfectly acceptable reaction.

The fungus' goal is to spread, yes. But the infected will and do eat people because that is how they sutain themselves. The fungus might help prolong the duration they can go without but these infected hosts WILL die of starvation. So they do eat stuff.
As for the "orifice vs orifice" thing (lol), the terndrils are ONLY located in the mouth. We have seen 3 instances of the tendrils being located, and they are used in order to facilitate the spread of the fungus. And the infected have only one for openings on the head: ears (episode 1), mouth (episode 2). Cordyceps controls the brain. So it wants to get there as soon as possible. So, no. In the game, Bill lectures Joel upon seeing Ellie, telling him he needs to take her back, and if he can't, just cut her loose and let her fend for herself. In this world, sentimentality will get you killed. He then proceeds to tell a story about how he once had someone he cared about, a partner, but that he realized caring about someone was only good for one thing, and he realized it had to be just him. Later, they find Frank dead of suicide after he'd been bitten several times. Bill's isolationism was a cautionary tale for Joel, who clearly was following the same path in his extraordinary efforts to protect himself from losing someone else he loved. His insistence that Ellie never even mention Tess is reflective of how determined he is to keep his pain locked away.
It's brilliant how the writers took the exact same character and went 180 degrees the other way, showing how Bill lived a full life, satisfied, to use his own word, even if his life was cut short through caring for another. Joel should be so lucky, but he tells Ellie in the very next episode that she is nothing more than cargo. He's determined not to care for her or anyone else if he can avoid it. He's already failed two people and been left behind. No more.

While this specific story of Bill and Frank was not in the game, this episode, more so than any other, demonstrates what makes the storytelling in the game work so well! In the game, you are locked into Joel and Ellie’s perspective, as we experience the world from the fixed, limited perspective of Bill and Frank here. For that reason alone, it’s definitely worth playing the game, because I think with the more global perspective they’ve taken in the show, there is a lot lost in the telling of the story of Joel and Ellie. And we know that telling this story from a fixed, limited perspective works so incredibly well, as we’re reminded of here in this episode.

In the game, Frank tells Joel that caring about anyone is a mistake that will get you killed. He says that he had someone he cared about, a "partner" but that was over and a mistake. He is unhappy and alone and bitter. Frank's body is later found hanging. Bill is a cautionary tale to an unhappy and lonely Joel about what Joel might become if Joel can't reembrace other people. In the show, they flip that. Bill is on a course to be bitter and alone, but Frank shows up. Bill's suicide note then says that he was happy that everyone died, but he was wrong because there a few people worth saving: the ones you care for (and I guess everyone else can still die as far as Bill is concerned). He is a positive model for Joel, showing him that you can still be happy and fulfilled, even in this world, if you care about others and protect them. This is an important message for Joel who has been guarded ever since Sarah died (even Tess he doesn't call his "girlfriend" or "wife" and in Episode 2 she says she never asked that he return her feelings for him, even though they are clearly together, sleeping in the same bed, working together, going after Tommy together, etc.).

    Spoilers for the game:
Bill was alive. Frank was dead by time Joel and Ellie arrived. He killed himself after being bitten.
Frank ended up hating Bill in the game because Bill never actually opened up to the world, so he felt trapped and wanted more from life.
The show is like an alternate version of what would have happened if Bill said yes when Frank asked him to fix the place and make friends.
That's part of what makes this episode so powerful, it was just one decision that changed their entire life together.

They made excellent real estate investments, formed great business connections, procured the finest food and wine, produced beautiful art, got married, and had the best retirement plan possible. But they specifically mentioned in this episode that there was a "couple weeks" timer that would start to play 80's if it wasn't reset, so it could have been anywhere in a range of a few weeks if they didn't play it manually.Personally, I'd like to think they had more important things on their mind at that time than setting a radio code :)

If you want an extra dose of emotion, go listen to the song that comes over the radio at the end of Episode 1.
This episode was so joyful, Bill and Frank got to grow old together, having as good of a life as one could ever hope for in a fungal apocalypse. They went out on their own terms, happy and having avoided the suffering so many others had to.
Yeah, in the game, Bill was a warning of sorts for Joel, to show who he could become if he refused to connect and open his heart again. But in the show, they flipped that, and let Bill and Frank showcase what Joel could hope to have if he allows himself to care and connect again. Bill went from an isolated, paranoid, fearful closeted gay man, to an openly gay man comfortable with loving Frank openly and willing to die to protect him and willing to trust Joel with Frank's wellbeing if push came to shove.
And this helps the radio warnings make sense, 80's being trouble and all (with the AIDs epidemic dominating the 80s, it's likely Frank lost some loved ones back then).

He sensed Bill is gay when he knows the finer things in life (matching the meal with the wine) and kinda tested him after he played the piano. Frank knew there’s a sensitive and loving persona in Bill. It may looked like Frank’s manipulative but their opposite personalities matched.
Bill’s a hard survivalist and Frank taught him to love, live and appreciate the little things in life. What an amazing ep!

The parallel to the infected is Frank here in this episode. The head is clear, but his multiple sclerosis or ALS (probably) has control over his body. The infected are at least partly aware of their actions, at least in the first stage. In the game, they even cry. They also cry while eating their friends.
And through this episode we also know that Tess and Joel have known each other for more than 13 years and that they were still "decent" people 7 years after the outbreak. Tess told Ellie that they weren't good people and just before her death she told Joel to do all the shit they did right.
This episode had more to do with Joel's character than many realize. Even if you haven't seen him. Bill and Joel are both bitter and alone. However, the development of Bill clearly showed the differences, as one of them was willing to let a person into his life. As a result, despite the almost similar mindsets at the beginning, Bill got a long full and happy life. Joel, on the other hand, is stuck. So yes, the episode was important and not just because of the farewell letter at the end. It showed that there is hope, even if Joel doesn't have one yet.
This episode showed that people are important to be happy. We are usually herd animals.
