Before you watch any adaptation, read the novel. The writing is so good and make sure to get the one with the illustrations. Treasure Island is one of the best books I have ever read. It's as if your there.
I read it in 1074 or so - I was about 12-14 years old. I still remember some things about it. Over the last few days, I listened to the book on tape. GREAT yarn. Now, I want to watch the 2012 movie; I didn't even know it existed until just now.
Seen this twice. Despite liberties with the book it is very enjoyable and well worth it! For those who saw the show, I also see this film as, in my mind, the right follow up to 'Black Sails' in spirit and tone, excepting of course that the actors are different.
I really liked this one. The directing was a little hit and miss but the film overall was pretty good. I really appreciated that they created their own version of treasure island instead of just retelling the same story with different actors.
If you haven't seen or heard of it, black sails is an epic series about pirating. It's on Starz I think. Captain flint, Charles bane, long John silver, great list of characters and actors who play them.
@@chad773 I always welcome a person who advocates Black Sails as soon as pirates are mentioned. I've been advocating the show since the very first episode. It was wildly underappreciated at the time of it's release. But near the final season the popularity picked up and after it ended it spiked for a while. A lot of really great tv shows suffer the same fate. Gotham springs to mind. People and their need for familiarity.. only once it "dies" will they go "well, let's have a poke". And then complain that it's dead because they want to see it alive. That's actually, basically, the internet xD
@@kiyaleelevyrunaya9495 hahahah the human experience in a nutshell. Don't know what you got till it's gone. But I totally forgot about Gotham. Fkin loved that show!
If you want to watch a great adaptation of Stevenson's novel though, then I would recomend you to watch the 1990 version directed and written by Fraser Clarke Heston and with Charlton Heston as Long John Silver, Christian Bale as Jim Hawkins, Oliver Reed as Captain Billy Bones, Christopher Lee as Blind Pew, Julian Glover as Doctor Livesey, Pete Postlethwaite as George Merry and many more :), best adaptation I have seen and the Chieftains music for the film is amazing. I have not seen this 2012 version in the writting moment and to be honest have not even heard of it before now, but for me it seems like they want to be more like Pirates of the Caribbean than true to its own story so much that they even copied the Pirates of the Caribbean title logo with the scroll, the text style and the skull.
I think I'll watch it..someday....but not soon. I've read the book, in fact, is my most favourite book from all, and what makes it my favourite is I can make my own images while reading. Watching a movie about it pretty much....kills the magic. I'm sure this movie is fantastic, but I may wait some time to watch it....
I watched this movie. Unlike most of the people commenting here. This movie actually tells a real story unlike the pirates of a caribbean. Seriously guys. Who gives a shit about the book? Even tho its been changed. They didn't fuck up the direction they wanted to go for.
I just watched this on instant play (Netflix) and it was actually very good. It is very different than the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, and I think much better. Definitely worth watching.
Yes there is violence, but that is what greed does to people, and remember this took place in a time where disputes were settled by use of a blade. I think that it captures adventure in a fun way, though I still don't recommend it to people who are faint of heart
I'm a huge Treasure Island fan but i only have watched the german version and the best about it was Tobias Moretti as Long John Silver. Why aren'T there any correct and good movies based on this epic novel? By the way for everyone who wants to know the trailer song - its take it easy chicken by mansun ;)
The reason makes me dislike the pirate context (i mean treasure island novel) is that the story's included in grade 12th english book (Sunrise 12 - if anyone has information bout it) narrated as 8 episodes each with 3 - 4 sections... the only reason I'm here to watch it TwT
Was this by any chance intended as a follow up ti black sails? I know that was done as a sort of prequel but I thought it didn't come out until after this film?
No, Treasure Island is one of the oldest "adventure pirate stories" that has been made into film several times through the years. Disney's version is probably the most popular one, then there's another one for tv in the 90's with Christian Bale (very good watch) as well as Muppet Treasure Island (in credibly hilarious and a parody of the 90s version).
Unrelated actually. Despite having characters with the same name, Black Sails (according to the creators) is a completely separate fictional universe, with 'loose ties' to Treasure Island. In my opinion, Black Sails leads up to Treasure Island perfectly until the final episode wherein the writers choose a cop out instead of tying it in with Stevenson's book. So if you choose to ignore the ending of Black Sails, its a direct prequel.
It would be AMAZING if there would be a 5/6th Season of Black Sails, who tell the Story of Treasure Island. But it would be starange, since Flints Crew are the bad Guys in Treasure Island.
This is based on a novel by N.C. Wyeth from 1883. The first PotC was made in 2003. This movie was copied from a book that was written 107 years before the first ideas for the PotC movies even existed (which was in 1990).
why is everyone talking about the potc? this has little to do with it other than the novel Treasure Island is where we get most of our opinions of pirates? god some people are ignorant as hell.
John Silver, a kindly, intelligent and energetic man....how did they fuck that up?? He's the best described character in the book (except for Billie Bones maybe)
Spot on. My take is that the book, which I revisit often has keen sense of a moral universe with the God of the Bible as its backbone, not this postmodern violence orgy.
this movie seems to be very cheap... ;( but should i watch it anyway because the prequel to this is "black sails" ? im really not sure what to do here...
What you (and everyone commenting here) seem to have missed is that this movie is actually the story of how Thomas Hamilton (son of the late Lord Alfred Hamilton) from Black Sails faked his death in a mental asylum, and forged a new identity as "Squire Trelawney" and secretly orchestrated the entire Treasure island expedition (including getting Hawkins involved) in order to uncover the whereabouts of his late friend (and lover), Captain James Flint. All of this makes sense because, Fun Fact: Squire Trelawney in this film is actually played by the same actor as Thomas Hamilton from Black Sails.
Thats a very strange coincidence that I am not sure I am comfortable with lol... I hated the end of Black Sails because it seemed like a cop out. Instead of tying the universes together, they completely screwed the timeline by having John Silver decide he doesnt care about the treasure, and Flint end up with Hamilton instead of dying of fever...
Just saw it. 3 hours. This movie had alot of potential but its being dragged down by its often slow tempo, long slowmotion scenes and lack of good music score. Also too often very weird and unsettling camera angles aint making it better. Izzard is doing a good acting job, so the captains. But the kid is annoying in what he do/behaves, and he is generally unfit for the role. I say shorten most scenes, remove all slowmo and add a catchy music score and this movie could have been a hit.
I felt that the changes to the story in this interpretation we're too much. They basically rewrote every character. When you make a film based on a classic book you respect it, and don't use "creative license" as an excuse to change the elements that made the story so excellent to begin with.
Before you watch any adaptation, read the novel. The writing is so good and make sure to get the one with the illustrations. Treasure Island is one of the best books I have ever read. It's as if your there.

If you want the best version of Treasure Island, then of course you must read Stevenson's 1883 original. That should just go without saying.
or just watch black sails

They need to make a version of this movie with the same treatment as Black Sails, geared more towards adults and less towards children.
