Everyone looks at things differently and can do the same thing in a different way
Personally I very rarely stay true to warhammer 40k lore when painting because I want to try different things. Throwing paint at a miniature and seeing what sticks is best life in the hobby
Doesn't matter how you enjoy warhammer 40k as long as you enjoy it

If you read the books, Emperor's Children were decked out in crazy paint schemes and unique decorations after they fell to chaos and that... really weirded out Perterabo.
Basically, if you hear that a legion is approaching and you look out to see every colour imaginable and multiple unimaginable colours in the most ridiculous party styles…

My imperial knights army is themed on Beer/alcoholic drinks. Started with the Bud Knight and progressed to Guinness, Jägermeister, twisted tea, mikes harder lemonade, and white claw. Everyone loves the paint job at tournaments and shows I'm here to have fun, not win.

Agree. I just started painting yesterday with the Space Marines in the Starter Set, and I've already determined a custom paint scheme I like, mixing blue as the base color with red on the tassets and shoulders to have a mix of Ultramarines and Blood Angels
And just like that, the Thunder Cats space marine chapter was born.

I remember the days when Games Workshop encouraged the creation of your own chapters.
Modern Games Workshop + Lore Nerds = death of fun.
I think thats the coolest thing about warhammer imo, sure you can stick to the lore and paint them stock colours, however there's nothing to stop you painting a custom chapter which can be put into your own battles and scenarios
Cheetor was so cool, Silverbolt was my favourite back in the day but the whole beast wars cast was awesome!

Yeah there are more than enough “undocumented” or “secretive” Space Marine chapters, Necron dynasties, etc. to where you can paint them however you want and still give lore justification

Back in the early days of 40k space marines used to have all kinds of weird camo patterns on their armour that varied dependent on where they were deployed

i recently did a thousand sons rubric sorcerer in a welsh flag colour scheme and altho it was kina hell, it came out looking pretty cool imo!

I have yet to actually finish, but I've been slowly putting together "Da Noits Wot Sez GNI", a 40k Ork clan kitted out with tons of re-purposed Fantasy bits to look like raggedy Arthurian knights.
Probably run them using Snakebites rules.

I've had a homebrew Spacemarine chapter called the Imperial Tigers now for 20 years that me and my dad made when I was young... full body tiger stripes and imo they look fucking awesome.

Well i Take insparation from AoT for my Dark Angels, i even have a Lieutenant Levi, i Love that Mini, it has a simple deathwing Scheme but the Pose and Base make it really Pop.

Yeep painting up a homebrew chapter I made that’s hella A-asymmetric cause I love that style they got all bone armor, the left arm is all black, the helmets are black and the power pack too, it’s simple yet effective tbh and I like it
I'm so lucky, the dudes in my warhammer store, if you tell them you don't give a crap about lore and just wanna paint fun cool shit, they tell you the paints, and techniques to use. Best thing is when you paint in store, they just loan you the paints for free rather than being pushy salesmen, and you end up naturally buying a paint you enjoy. I collect Nids' and always joke about roleplaying a Hivemind because I don't know or care about any lore about my food. They also helped me paints a bunch of orcs in the style of Batman villains. 😂 Top blokes. ❤

The way I deicide how I was going to paint my marines was because I'm lazy, but i ended up liking how they looked then came up with some personal lore for them. The lore being they are similar to the legion of the damned that they come from the warp but they are a child vision and conjuring of space marines as she's an even more powerful psyker than the emperor and the emperor has been training her in his dreams. So now I'm making goign to make one of my marines clad in gold like the emperor and call her the little empress

I still paint lore accurate, but want to make elder craft world of my own when I am skilled enough to paint them

This inspired me to finally settle on a scheme for my chaos space marines. Screw my ideas of doing word bearers, alpha legion, or a lore accurate pre-heresy colors word bearers force. I’m going to paint every few guys inspired by a different metal band or album and their lore is they just rock out to make cults and take worlds. (Not in a noise marine way, it’s just that their pure metal energy makes worlds fall to their worship)

Last year I did a marine based on the UK Show Krypton Factor, and I'm currently working on a mini diorama with a Lion-O marine against a Mumm-Ra Necron. Good fun

I've tried a few colourshifting paints from different companies and they're cool but I kind of prefer trying to do colourshift as non metallic metal because apparently I hate myself 🤣

Funny story. About 10 years ago i was a commission painter full time. Had a website, business license and everything. A customer paid for a project to be done the way he wanted and received a 1 star review on google from some random guy for basing these Necrons with grass flock like the customer asked for. Smh Apparently Necrons were never on a planet with grass I don't f***kin know 😅 In the end the customer was happy but it's still sad that someone would do that to someone business which was my livelihood, all over something sooo stupid.
maaaaaan, some people are just absolute entitled tools. i had a similar thing happen because i put a female elf head on a space marine. they act like you stole their dog, hid the keys, and took the batteries out of the remote
