Yeah, it's kinda in the name, Electric, Light (referring to the size of the orchestra as opposed to luminosity), Orchestra. All the sounds you see/hear live were there to begin with.
The strings have always been a big part of ELO's sound. They hit their peak during the disco era and the strings definitely helped them fit in and get a lot of airplay amidst all of that. Of course, Jeff Lynne's brilliant songwriting has always been their main draw. I hope you check out the album you were gifted. I think you'll really enjoy it. :)
Their name gives you an indication that orchestral sound was an integral part of their sound from the beginning Electric Light Orchestra. It’s why they are so popular. Just a perfect blend of orchestral, rock and blues.
I would always get excited when this song came on the radio when I was a kid. I still love this song to this day!!! I love Jeff Lynne's voice. ELO such a great band!!! What a treat, thank you Beth!!!
Beth, I was lucky enough to be at this concert at Wembley Stadium. It was the best concert I have seen, and the enjoyment from everyone and the band members was fantastic.
I'd venture their cover of Roll Over Beethoven is a complete dogs breakfast and entirely misses the point of 50's pop song. But other than that, they don't have a bad song.
Beth better late than never!!!! This is a good upbeat song!! Yes as I recall ELO always had strings.... One of the first to do it as a matter of routine. A great rock band!!!!!! It is real cool that so many where singing along with Jeff. Thank YOU!!!!!
Jeff Lynne is an icon in the music industry. And I mean that in the truest sense of the word. He actually was involved in producing some Beatles tunes back in the day as I understand. He's a friggin musical genius really.
Yes, always strings. This sounds so close to the original studio version. Love seeing all these old people in the audience singing along, wait a minute, that means I am old too! Oh well, we are a blessed generation to have grown up with such great music!
The album's a perfect 10. It would be an 11 if Jeff had added just one more verse and one more round of chorus to, "Above The Clouds", a beautiful but far too short song.
What can you say, it's Jeff Lynne and ELO. IMO, ELO has the most songs that can get stuck in your head, this one included. Love how they use so many elements in their songs, especially the strings and cow bell. (More cow bell!) Their "Don't Bring Me Down" (my favorite of theirs), "All Around the World", and "Telephone Line" are ones to really get into. Another great song with strings is "Drops of Jupiter" by Train.
Strings are a signature part of ELO. Thank you for doing this reaction. I couldn't believe you'd never heard this, and then you realized that you had! They have so many great songs. I hope you do more reactions to them. Of course you have reacted to Traveling Wilburys, so you've reacted to Jeff Lynn there.
RARELY a good idea to make a live version of a song your first listen. Live versions of pop/rock songs are almost always the band attempting (but nor quite succeeding) to recreate their studio sound... having said that, ELO's small string section. (which has ALWAYS been a part of the band, hence the "Orchestra" part of the name) has always done an amazing job recreating their sound on stage.
There was nobody like them...I saw them early to mid-seventies with the orchestral elements incorporated into the band. They mixed '50s rock 'n' roll with classical, disco, funk, etc. They had a bass player named Kelly Groucutt who shared vocals with Lynne and sang the falsetto parts on tour particularly on my favorite song, "Rockaria" which was a perfect blend of rock 'n' roll and opera/classical...definitely worth checking out.
ELO were very successful and rather unique. They had a string of top ten singles and albums in the UK. Jeff Lynne is a songwriter, singer, multi‐instrumentalist and successful music producer, and the driving force behind the band after Roy Wood left early on. He's written for, performed on and produced albums for Tom Petty, George Harrison, Roy Orbison and Paul McCartney amongst others. He co‐wrote, played, sang and co‐produced both Travelling Wilburys albums. Not a bad resumé by anybody's standards.
This is definitely a band I appreciated far more as I got older. I feel sort of foolish for not getting them when I was younger. Actually, a great band.
It was cool not to like ELO back in the day with many of my friends. Me, I really liked ELO, at least up to, and including A New World Record, but they lost me after that. Saw them live twice...on the Eldorado tour fiollowed by the Face The Music tour. The latter is probably my favourite album by them.
I love your reaction videos, Beth. You are an excellent singer, and it's great to see you embrace rock music. You are also a lovely, beautiful lady. Keep rockin', dear. You're the best...
Beth that falsetto into a mix comes from one of Jeffs music Idol's Roy Orbison👍In my opinon i dint think ELO ever did a bad song they are Phenomenal check all there other hits, great channel. 🎸🎹🇺🇲👌😎
ELO got its name as they were Electric, and original line up features a "Light Orchestra" (basically a string quartet). A Feature they kept up to the album 'Time' The Album Discovery was nicknamed "Disco Very" by some of the band, but after Roy Wood left (the first album) there was certainly a dash of the danceable in some of their songs Peaking with Discovery.
That man has one of the best voices in the world in my opinion. It's just "perfectly pure" for lack of a better word(s). You need to listen to their albums.. The Strings have always been there! Gotta listen to "Telephone Line" - it transitions from a somewhat distorted voice on a phone to the PURE perfect voice of Lynne. Great music
ELO has always had strings on the albums. You should give a listen to Livin' Thing Jeff Lynne's ELO Live with Rosie Langley and Amy Langley, Glastonbury 2016. The opening violin solo is amazing...
ELO absolutely always has strings! This is one of the best groups to have every graced the Earth! Congratulations Beth. You must listen to other classics of theirs. Living Thing is a superb song that I highly HIGHLY recommend! You will be in awe of their talent. Thank you Beth for finally listening to ELO. YAY!
I guess you already heared Jeff Lynne- He was in the Traveling Wilburys too with Geroge Harrison, Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan and Tom Petty! Greets from Germany and have fun.
Their album Out of the Blue was the very first album I ever bought in 1977 when I was 14. It still hasn't gotten old. The strings are such an important part of their sound.
Jeff Lynne was also a 'friend/collaborator/founder' on the Traveling Wilburys, with Roy Orbison, George Harrison, Tom Petty and Bob Dylan. He's such a great musical talent.
ELO are a musical happy place whatever your situation. This concert was in 2017 Jeff was 69!!!!! And still going strong. The varied age of the audience illustrates the enduring quality of the music and oh how much they are lovin it!
Saw them perform in Vancouver a few years ago. Utterly incredible!! I've listened to them since the 80's. Love them!!! If you have the opportunity to see them, DO IT!!! You will not be disappointed!🙂
Saw them in Adelaide, Football Park in 1978. It was the ‘Out Of The Blue’ tour. As a young teenager it was an earth shattering experience. Show was so futuristic, with the stage encaged in lasers. Simply stunning.
The Electric Light Orchestra led by the genius that is Jeff Lynne have been my lifelong favourites since the early 70s. Jeff is in his 70s here. Amazing. My other musical favourites are Nightwish with Floor Jansen who I had not heard of until just over 12 months ago. Phenomenal live band and Floor is the best vocalist that I have ever heard. Thank you for a wonderful reaction. Paul 🙏😊👍❤️
Jeff Lynn is brilliant in ELO but his producing and being Bffs with George Harrison was legendary, from Cloud 9 to Brain Washed to being a Traveling Wilbury.
And they have the amazing Langley sisters on 1st chair cello and violin! The stunning violinist is none other than Rosey Langley with her gorgeous smile.
Jeff Lynne is a legend with in his own right. You have to check out the song. Telephone line 📞 live in Wembley is so beautiful even the crowd is beautiful to see in a dream like state.
ELO were huge in the 70s, with a distinctive string sound that no-one else was making. Jeff Lynne wrote many hits over the years. "All Over the World" and "Telephone Line" are two more to check out.
Jeff Lynne is a musical genius. E.L.O. is just one of many great bands from my home town of Birmingham. Others inc. Moody Blues, Black Sabbath, U.B.40, Spencer Davis Group and many more.

Hi Beth. In the 70ths ELO Had two on Cello(Hugh McDowell and Melvyn Gale) and one on Violin (Mik Kaminski). And orchestera was conducted by Louis Clark. Thank you Beth for a fun and interesting Reaction video.
This was written in the 70's and there were strings players in the band You need to listen to Mr Blue Sky, Rock Aria. Telephone Line from this show gives you shivers Just a brilliant band That's the original line up you described, Richard Tandy is the keyboard player in the show as well. He's been around a long time!
I remember them first time round in the 70s with a great deal of affection, as a singles band. What strikes me with this iteration of the band, particularly in live settings like this is that all the musicians around him look like they're having an absolute ball. Not the original band was surly or moody, but these guys look like they're loving every minute of it.
Thanks you for another awesome reaction!! The one song you must not miss is "Roll Over Beethoven" - the best cover ever of the great Chuck Berry classic! Live is best!!
Everyone should see ELO at least once. They have their live show down to an art form and I'd even go as far as to say they sound better live than on the albums. Jeff Lynn is still killing even though he's in his 70s and he is smart enough to have all that amazing talent backing him to pick up the where he needs them to now that he's older. I've seen older musicians that try to do everything they used and it suffers as a result, but ELO has it worked out perfectly.

probably one of the best bands of all time certainly up there with Queen.. and Mr. Blue Sky has been scientificlly proven as the "Happiest song of all time "... should do more !!!
Jeff Lynne is one of the greatest song writers ever, on par with Lennon and McCartney. And yes, the strings were on the record, if Jeff Lynne wanted strings, he got strings, no matter the cost. You need to review “Telephone Line”, he hit it out of the park on that track.
Beth: I enjoy your videos ! have you ever reacted to anything by the Traveling Wilburys? Every song on their two albums are awesome. The band is Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, George Harrison, Bob Dylan and Jeff Lynne and I forgot who their drummer was. Talk about a supergroup!
Evil Woman was first recorded by ELO in 1975. You should listen to When I Was A Boy which they recorded 40 years later in 2015 from the LP "Alone In The Universe" and is a beautiful Jeff Lynne composition. Another new album was released in 2019, "From Out Of Nowhere" too. There aren't many artists that are still putting out killer new albums more than 40 years down the line. Most singers are either no longer still performing or are just doing nostalgia tours and not releasing new material.
I bought tickets to see Deep Purple in 1972. $15 for the tickets. There were two opening acts: ELF, ELO, and Deep Purple. Elf introduced me to Ronnie James Dio. Electric Light Orchestra was on tour to promote its first album. That was the first time I ever saw a cellist and a violinist playing rock & roll. They were spinning their instruments and dancing about the stage with them.
@@Cosmo-Kramer Yes...ELO was promoting its first album. Because I saw them at the beginning, and I recognized their great energy and talent, I became a lifetime fan. Being a great fan of Jeff Lynne, I see him in concert whenever I can...the last time being either 2018 or 2019. just before Covid.
I was in school when this was in the charts, Myself and a mate Chris would sit at the back of maths class belting this out coz we were so interested in maths haha, great memories....
They always had the strings…. and the synths…. And the best acoustic guitars… And Jeff Lynne they have Jeff Lynne.
Very much a musicians musician, and a funny bloke...
Yeah, it's kinda in the name, Electric, Light (referring to the size of the orchestra as opposed to luminosity), Orchestra. All the sounds you see/hear live were there to begin with.
Came here to say the same ☺️💗
And they have Jeff Lynne.
Strings oh yeah. That "O" is Orchestra.

Of course, Jeff Lynne's brilliant songwriting has always been their main draw. I hope you check out the album you were gifted. I think you'll really enjoy it. :)
Thanks for stating that. Yes, the band always had incredible sound, and a big part was from the string instruments. Full orchestra.
The name Electric Light *Orchestra* was no random choice. 😉 I always found their fusion of sounds so unique and appealing.
An Orchestra with strings, who’d have thunk it.
ELO is one of the most amazing bands ever. Jeff is a genius.
Their name gives you an indication that orchestral sound was an integral part of their sound from the beginning Electric Light Orchestra. It’s why they are so popular. Just a perfect blend of orchestral, rock and blues.

Jeff is an amazing talent. Brilliant producer, songwriter and performer
My favorite ELO song is Telephone Line but they don’t have any bad songs ❤
This was my favorite song also
Love all elo songs but 'All over the World' is probably my favorite.
I would agree, not a single bad song.
I'd venture their cover of Roll Over Beethoven is a complete dogs breakfast and entirely misses the point of 50's pop song. But other than that, they don't have a bad song.
Definitely his best song.

Jeff Lynne is a gift to every music lover. He had a vision, and he's seeing it through in perfect form.
Jeff Lynne is an icon in the music industry. And I mean that in the truest sense of the word. He actually was involved in producing some Beatles tunes back in the day as I understand. He's a friggin musical genius really.

LOL...I had the same delayed reaction to the crowd demographics when I first saw this video!
4:40
"Orchestra" is in the name for a reason.
Grew up listening to this band. HUGE sound.
Jeff Lynne. His genius keeps on giving.
'A New World Record' is essential listening.
The album's a perfect 10. It would be an 11 if Jeff had added just one more verse and one more round of chorus to, "Above The Clouds", a beautiful but far too short song.

"Rockaria", is a vastly underrated ELO gem. It's such a great concept lyrically, and it features Jeff's "'50s rocker" vocals at their absolute best.
ELO were very successful and rather unique. They had a string of top ten singles and albums in the UK. ELO has always had strings on the albums. You should give a listen to Livin' Thing Jeff Lynne's ELO Live with Rosie Langley and Amy Langley, Glastonbury 2016. The opening violin solo is amazing...
Respectfully disagree, brother. I think it's better at this concert, Wembley '17. Not just her intro, but the band's whole performance.
ELO absolutely always has strings! This is one of the best groups to have every graced the Earth! Congratulations Beth. You must listen to other classics of theirs. Was at that concert! Jeff, Roy Wood and Elo a huge part of my Youth. Still part of my life today in my mid 60's!!!!
Look into Jeff Lynne's music history... He's been a song writer for many other big name artists as well... The guy is a hit machine
Love ELO, hope that no one says they or Jeff Lynne are underrated... I have a happy running playlist that is full of ELO 😊😊😊
Jeff is also the engineer, producer, and the main songwriter of the band!
Their album Out of the Blue was the very first album I ever bought in 1977 when I was 14. It still hasn't gotten old. The strings are such an important part of their sound.

Strings are the FABRIC of ELO sound. Not only the accompaniment, they’re the essence of ELO
Jeff Lynn is brilliant in ELO but his producing and being Bffs with George Harrison was legendary, from Cloud 9 to Brain Washed to being a Traveling Wilbury.
Blessed to be bathed in life meaningful music.
This is one of my favorite songs ever!
I initially misinterpreted "I was gifted an album by them" as meaning the band itself gave you an album you'd never listened to. 😆
And they have the amazing Langley sisters on 1st chair cello and violin! The stunning violinist is none other than Rosey Langley with her gorgeous smile.
Beth, the sound at this concert ... is so very, very close to the album tracks. Thanks for your lovely reaction video! More please.
I got to see them in Leeds a few years back and Jeff's voice was so perfect.
Good grief Beth!! How could you not have heard ELO?
Many excellent tracks (and I deny any bias from being at university in Birmingham in the 79s)...
Jeff Lynne is a legend with in his own right. You have to check out the song. Telephone line 📞 live in Wembley is so beautiful even the crowd is beautiful to see in a dream like state.

Wow, what a hauntingly beautiful rendition of that song! There are some deep emotions behind that.
yes they always have strings - watch as I said Beethoven's 5th/Roll Over Beethoven
they had strings on the records
I've clicked on the link you've posted. Could not find your cover of Evil Woman.

Welcome to elo world and the genius jeff lynne great review thank you 😊😊❤
I started out in my teens loving this band and I became a rocker .....amazing band still today.
I was there june 2017, 3 tier stage right Beth. My favourite band when i was young in the seventies.
I remember them first time round in the 70s with a great deal of affection, as a singles band. What strikes me with this iteration of the band, particularly in live settings like this is that all the musicians around him look like they're having an absolute ball. Beautiful blues, my favourite record of Electric Light Orchestra 🥰❤❤❤
A song about an evil woman and everyone is smiling and happy...
They are the master of Symphonic Rock.
Any and every ELO track is worth listening to. Can't wait for you to react to some more of their stuff.
Thanks you for another awesome reaction!! The one song you must not miss is "Roll Over Beethoven" - the best cover ever of the great Chuck Berry classic! Live is best!!
Strings, yes, synths, yes, even an opera singer on the iconic track 'Rockaria'.

I was given tickets to see them live in the 70’s. I was a convert after that. So good live.
First thing is to admit you have a problem. Now you've listened to them, no excuses!
Apologies Beth, I would have been watching earlier but there is this outstanding cover of Wicked Game on Spotify thats just 🤯🔥
As for ELO they were musically so interesting, I was born in the early 70's and as I got older my Mum's record collection was just fantastic. ELO , Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Doors , Fleetwood Mac. The 70s were eclectic with incredible musicianship
Checkout Mr Blue Sky or Sweet Talkin Woman ... great ELO songs that everyone knows but never remembers 😂
probably one of the best bands of all time certainly up there with Queen.. and Mr. Blue Sky has been scientificlly proven as the "Happiest song of all time "... should do more !!!
They always had the strings in their music. My favourite song from them is the classic “Can’t get it out of my head” cheers from Montréal!
I do love ELO. By far, one of my absolute favorites. ❤️❤️
🇨🇦 You can't describe this as a mixture of 70's and 80's because it was released, just as you are hearing it, in 1975 !
amazed you didn't know them! Fantastic.
Please listen to ELO - they are incredible. Fun fact: my first concert ever was ELO in 1981! I'm so proud of that fact.
Check out Telephone Line at Live at Wembley also! Masterful performance.
It's been a long time since I heard this song. This live performance sounds exactly like the album.
Jeff Lynne is one of the greatest song writers ever, on par with Lennon and McCartney. And yes, the strings were on the record, if Jeff Lynne wanted strings, he got strings, no matter the cost. You need to review “Telephone Line”, he hit it out of the park on that track.

You know how some lead singers lose their voice after getting older , he still sounds the same even today .
Great reaction. I haven’t seen corduroy dungarees since this album came out in the 70’s.
ELO really is just Jeff Lynne. The band is whoever he brings together. Jeff composes and produces everything.
A true musical genius. Without a doubt earned the right to call it Jeff Lynne’s ELO
Beth the answer is in their name
Love your reactions keep them coming
The name is Electric Light Orchestra. Orchestration was what They are about. Excellent sound.
I was in school when this was in the charts, Myself and a mate Chris would sit at the back of maths class belting this out coz we were so interested in maths haha, great memories....
The older fans represent the age of those who grew up with this music. I'm the same age.
One of my favorite groups when this came out...
Two of the girls playing strings are the Langley Sisters. They have their own recordings on UA-cam. Check them out.
They started out with strings from the very start of the group! It's in the name of the band - Electric Light ORCHESTRA!
love this song!! peace and love from Canada
the song that made them my favorite band...
