What work’s really well for smouldering smoke is using the recycled paper egg cartons or drink trays! Break them up and light them blow out the flame and it smoulders just great. A paint can with holes at the top and bottom and place the lid lightly on top - works great!
They are hard to find in the woods :)
@@outdoorsonthecheap 😂😂😂 maybe check the wild McDonald’s 😂
I bring flattened egg cartons outside with me ALWAYS. They're free, weigh nothing, easy to carry. It's a guaranteed firestarter, no matter how wet/frozen/both it is out there. I'm in the ADKs upstate NY, if you go out in the backcountry during winter/shoulder seasons, you will inevitably be in a situation where you NEED fire-or else. AND it creates plenty of smoke w/a long burn time: perfect if you're wanting to... Idk, make a smudge fire, for example. Just saying, haters!
My Dad taught me this trick when I was young. I use old tin pails usually. Throw in some coals then a handfull of grass on top. When hiking , like yesterday I use a mobile smudge , backwoods cigars. I'm not a smoker but they keep the bugs at bay. Also use spent or dead chaga when I'm processing reishi after collecting. Smells much better than the cigars, lol , and keeps both hands free for slicing up the reishi. Don't light up a big chunk unless you're going to be there awhile. You'll have to douse it with water to put it out.
Good Video. :)
In Quebec we call it horse farts lol
Dried cow dung smoulders forever. The bugs hate it.
Keeps the city people away too.
Less useful for outdoor life but maybe around the yard or garden; working on a farm and the black flies were awful, but one of the girls took an egg carton and lit an edge, just so it burned slowly, and worked as well as a store bought mosquito coil.
Its a good hack. I watched this while rubbing i leg with a mint leaf. Its working I think
Cool!
👍 Good trick.
Vicks Vaporub. Garlic, Onion.
Tried these things before and didn't work around here. Chaga, horseshoe fungi, different kinds of fire cans/pits/barrels, even green brush which will make serious cloud of smoke and they just keep flying around it and even fly through the smoke some times. I think the black flies, mosquitoes, etc around here have adapted or mutated to handle this sort of thing. I'm not saying this doesn't work in general, but around here they are not bothered by it.
I still have big dope on - but by sitting right next to it the flies are much more bearable. Sometimes I need two or three.
perfect
The fungus you're referring to is Fomes Fomentarius
Don't food cans have a plastic coating these days?
It's my understanding that most cans are coated with food-grade epoxy. The cans gets ridiculously hot when you do this so it probably burns off pretty quick. I usually throw mine in a fire after cooking the beans so they don't attract bears - after that any coatings that might have been on the cans are gone.
First!
Blackflies - and other types of creepy-crawlies:
PREVENTION: spray permethrin onto clothing & gear. Turn camp clothes inside out, spray all over, especially cuffs of sleeves & legs, waist and groin areas, collars, and any entry areas. Socks, hats, gloves.
Spray inside and outside of sleeping bag.
On tent, around screen doors, insidw get low corners & ceiling.
On your person, Deep Woods Off. Spray back side of a hand, rub that on ears, eyebrows, other affected areas.
AFTER BITES: Sawyer makes the EXTRACTOR. This is a suction device that removes venom. That stops the itching from flies, mosquitoes, etc. Can also get stingers out.

Or, burn some stuff in a tin can
@@outdoorsonthecheap G’day, Outdoors. I hope that you have much better luck with smudges etc against bugs than I have ever had. I could not get results, so now use permethrin. It kills bugs.
My best to you.

You don't need to hope. I was in the forest during black fly season when I made that video. They were everywhere :)
Were you from jackvoss?
If I cant smuge smoke I'm out of ideas for the pests
