When I worked on the MGM film "The Wild Rovers" in 1970-1971, actor William Holden brought his 1970 Mercedes 600 on location and to the studio. While the rest of the company traveled by air between locations, Bill preferred to drive, and often asked me or Ryan O'Neal to drive with him. That was one fabulous car! It's presently in a museum in Hollywood.
I remember having a car having to fuel in the back and how much I looked trying to figure how to fill it up. And it was behind the license plate. Love that your moon roof still works and the loudness of this thing.
my grandpa had one in the exact same exterior color but a pullman and with a black interior. i only saw it drive once in my whole life for a cousin’s wedding or something, the rest of the time it was squatted low in the garage on what i assumed as broken suspension, and it’s really moldy in the center console as well as on the carpets and headliner. they either moved it or sold it after my grandpa passed away in 2012. i kinda wanna buy one for myself now.
These were air ride suspension at least in the back. Often when a restorer finds one the air bag has split and deflated and its sitting low in the back.
Elegant, beautiful, a symbol of era in the last century, a symbol of every important occasion around the world, I would say this design long-last forever, even better than the latest model !
@@lex1945 Exactly what I was about to state. First time I saw this car, as a child, our dictator president was in it, waving at us. It was quite a presence, the mere sight of the car spooked everyone. Jay Leno got it right, every 'evil dictator' had one.
If memory serves me correctly, back in the day I believe sterling moss did a few laps with passengers in the car At Laguna Seca and came within five seconds of the track sedan record… Beautiful beast
So beautiful. I could almost smell that familiar 1960's 1970's car interior. They changed the smell in the 80's and 90's to more of a Volkswagen/BMW mix.
Oh my goodness that car is what dreams are made of 😍😍😍😍 it looks INCREDIBLE! and the price tag on one in this showroom condition must be nothing short of paralyzing
Worked on a number of these when employed at a Mercedes Agency back in the late 1960s - mansion on wheels ! Air ride suspension if my memory is correct...
It was a bit of both. I had the entire interior redone (Bud’s Benz and Madera Concepts for refinishing the wood), and a few chrome pieces - otherwise the car was in excellent shape. Although there are many horror stories of the expensive repairs that can await an owner (like the $11k window switch mentioned below), there is usually a cheaper fix that is just as legit (like having the old one rebuilt for $2 - $3k). The real challenge is in finding mechanics who know how to diagnose and fix a problem. With the exception of Star Motors in NY, most of the qualified 600 experts are in Southern CA, or Germany. If a mechanic is wrong on the diagnosis, you can spend a bunch of money and the problem isn’t fixed.
I’m a Rolls and Bentley fan, but back in the 60’s they really couldn’t compete with the 600. Even though the 600 was more expensive MB still lost money on every one. (My father traded in his Silver Cloud III for one in 1968). They wanted to compete with Rolls/Bentley and used their engineering know-how to really hit the ball out of the park (but it was the most expensive car made at the time). Jay Leno has one and I believe he states in his youtube video that its his favorite car.....
Bill Fowler:... you... have... GOT... to... be... fucking... KIDDING... me!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Couldn't compete!?! The 600 was great, no question, but compared to a Rolls!? NO CONTEST (and that is no compliment to the merc I assure you!!!) In my professional and personal life, I've handled, driven and worked on many Rolls' - Bentley and prestige Mercs, and it's Rolls and/or Bentley EVERY time!!!
The only car in this period that is its equal is the Cadillac Eldorado Brougham Series 70 from 1957-58. It introduced many features that were revolutionary at the time such as quad headlights, auto dimming headlights, memory seats and self seeking and adjusting radio. Both this car and the Eldorado had self leveling suspensions automatic windows and self opening and closing trunks. The Cadillac was pneumatic and MB hydraulic. This car is an old school upright sedan made to be ridden in and driven by a driver. The Cadillac is simpler, streamlined and oriented towards the future and meant to be self driven.
0:54 I remember actor Greg Morris closing the trunk lid on of these at the push of the button on "Mission: Impossible" in 1971 or 72 & thought that was nifty.
Yep, I believe they all had two horns and you either could engage them both, or just use one or the other (don’t remember if there’s actually a switch or if it has to do with where you push the horn ring on the steering wheel). My father had one when I was a kid (I actually tried to find his and have it restored, but couldn’t find it) - before he lost it through bankruptcy, he’d drive down the street and honk the big horn when he was driving by all of the neighborhood kids playing football in someone’s front yard!

Cars of 70's and 80's were made with passion and built to last long. The newer generation cars are nothing but an example of VALUE ENGINEERING I. E., built to last only a few years not even double digit years....
I totally agree....... everything that Paul Bracq oversaw was pretty timeless, and the BMW 2002 and the E9 bodystyles are on the same page. I’m a bit surprised that those BMW’s haven’t been in even higher demand....... but its coming (probably because they just don’t have as long of a history as Mercedes).
Interesting to see the US specification headlamps. Everything of such beautiful quality, and still working as it was built to, smoothly and easily - even the hydraulic windows.
Why am I not surprised s Bruno Sacco-Paul Bracq penned design. All of Bruno Sacco designs are the best. Lucky for me I own one of his designs the R129 SL500. After Bruno retired the designs has gone down as well as reliability.
That’s true, but remember that the gas crisis of the 70’s forced automakers to use more lightweight products so their cars wouldn’t use as much gas. Mercedes, BMW etc. could afford to build cars like this, Ford, GM, Chrysler couldn’t
@@dianuj3655 Many cars from the 1930s to the 1960s were stream line formed. Even the 1970s, when boxy cars were fashionable, produced some smoothly shaped sport cars.
@@-Gunnarsson- No one needs poor fuel economy, but the rich can certainly afford it. I have a w126 and it gets 13 mpg city, but at least it has a huge gas tank (nearly 27.3 gallons). It is cost prohibitive for me to drive it regularly because I would use 12 gallons of gas every day with it. But for just driving around it is tremendous, and fuel economy is not a concern because of how enjoyable it is to drive. There's no feeling that you need to accelerate quickly or reach high speeds, but the car will do both easily. So, no the don't need poor fuel consumption but the result is worth it.
