'Top Speed Germany' is a German UA-cam channel for people who love cars.
My Name is Max and I film while driving cars. No matter if they are old, fast, loud or electric. They need to be special! With several onboard cams, I record everything important to show you High-Speed-Runs, Acceleration tests ( 0-100 kph / 0-200 kph / 100-200 kph / 200-300 kph ) and test drives on German Autobahn or Road. Please note, Germany is the country of "no speed limit" highways. So in some places, it's allowed to drive very fast. But please don't try this if you are not an experienced driver !! If you enjoy give a like and subscribe for more videos ;-) . - Авто та транспорт
When u are crusing at 200 km/h with 42 years old car u need only two fingers to hold steering. This is Merc !
Nott just mercedes, a lot of old cars could do that.
I've owned a large number of cars between 30 and 40 years old, but none have been as smooth as Mercedes. I can't say anything for Bentley and Rolls Royce because I didn't drive. I'm not a fanatic of any brand, but when it comes to classic vehicles, Mercedes is the number one for me.
@@denizonen you would be suprised how direct and smooth an old Citroen SM or CX for instance was, the steering is unbelievaby direct and the car rides so smooth, but it takes a long time to be able to drive one whout other people thinking you are drunk.
@@aaaabababa Only good cars do that, new or old.
That was a Merc. Not a Chrysler/ Daimler
I'm old enough to remember seeing it on the streets when they're new. Time flies. Thanks for bringing back the memories. This is a real hot rod.
The engine sound is fantastic!

We know, right !
Yeaaaa
The whole car is fantastic
Stimme ich zu 😘😋👋
OUTSTANDING. And note how rock steady that 40+ year old car is at speed. No drama-NOTHING. Just refined autobahn cruising courtesy of Mercedes Benz.
Imagine this kind of performance in the late '70s from a luxury sedan, when everyday cars were struggling to keep today's highway speeds.
Yes back in the day you would even outperform sports cars with this car, given the weight and comfort that is amazing. King of the road.
@@tigervv6437 Yeah. I mean you can destroy most cars with an S63 AMG today as well, but you can't really notice that in everyday life since all new cars can get to legal speeds rather quickly. But back then, you could actually feel like sitting in the living room of a rocketship when cruising around in this.
I went in one as a kid in 1983 ish incredable car dad did 120mph in it and didnt have a clue how fast he had gone so fast and so quiet
Overstate much?
@@DominusOminous What?
286hp 500Nm is even today impressive stats. But that couch feeling interior is pricless :)
Actually not for 7 litre engine ;-) But back then without turbos, compressors, ekoterrorist´s features it has some magic.
It’s a incredible piece of engineering. It’s about the power of a Golf GTI TCR, which is seriously fast. But this thing is about 40 years older. That’s just mind boggling
550 Nm....286 horse.....i have a 96 740iL ..286 hp and 400 Nm.....i think the W116 is washing the ground with my e38....or no.....hmmm 3 gears vs 5 ...maybe not
286hp@4250/min that is - no doubt they could have gone to 350 or more hp easily, the M100 is quite a modern construction. But the goal was to make this thing as effortless as possible.
@@RFreigeldorff rave versoins of this engine in the w109 actually had about 430hp out of 6.8l.
Auch heute noch ein tolles Fahrzeug. In den 70er-Jahren absolut phantastisch. Den 450 SEL 6,9 konnte sich damals kaum jemand leisten.
I've been a car fan since I was knee-high to a V8 and this has always been one of my favourites. A real Q-car, a wolf in sheep's clothing and built like a tank. Superb machine.
The ignition itself was so smooth. Unbelievable.

Sorted K-Jetronic injection starts really on first turn if the engine is hot. Fuel pressure from fuel distributor to injector lines and it goes on first spark. It is sign of well restored or exceptionally maintained injection system.
Lowest wind noise of 2020 from a 1978 Mercedes 😂👍🏻
My dads 7 series doesn’t have wind noise
The best thing is he only needs two fingers to drive this dinosaur. That’s good old Merc.
I resent that remark:-)
The car is a money pit. Doing 10 miles a gallon. Get over yourself.
@@allwinds3786 it's very unsafe, it can't turn
Certainly something not to encourage your children ever to attempt.
You could even drive golf like that but it's not smart at all.
You know it's a good car when the speedometer starts at 20 km/h
why is that ?
@@qwertyui90qwertyui90 because it is
everyone here checked if it starts at 20km/h, I did it honestly
when I was a little boy, I always checked the meters of any new car in our street, to see 'how fast it could go' (we didn;t know that those numbers were not the truth) It was the early 80s, so most cars were from the 70s and had 140 or 160 as max. 180 was really fast and if we spotted a 200 we talked about it for days. (there weren't any Porches in my street) I spotted a 220 once a year maybe a Mercedes with 240 once, but never 260. I don;t think I believed that would be possible
I had a car that could do 97mph but speedometer went from 10mph to 150mph :)
41 years old and still one of the greatest cars , perhaps not the fastest model but who cares ...look at it how stable it is , look the interior condition and how easy is to handle , that's pure elegance in motion right there !!!
Beautiful Mercedes as always !!!!
But its crazy how quick it get up to speed even for 40+ year old car. Back in the day it was the fastest sedan in the world. This is pure German muscle 💪🏻
@@zaimkarii1756 that's because of the above average displacement of the engine , the superbly balanced crank shaft and of course who drove the car all this time , how well maintained was the engine all this time and last but not least the German Autobahn ( highway ) .
OMG a 42 year old car! Back in the day when Mercedes produced quality, you can tell!

This must have been a fantastic thing to see in the 70s, while you were driving your vw bug on the autobahn at 100, this thing flies by you at 240.

I have a 1975 450SEL. It drives very nicely. So does my ‘80 450SL. Old Mercedes are a real pleasure to drive. They love being driven and love the highway.
This 6.9 has got to be my favorite S-class of all time! This was WAY ahead of its time in terms of engineering and technology. And to add to that, these cars are made of raw materials that are practically indestructible as compared to the ones used in the more modern Mercedes Benz sedans.
Rust! The sills were a nightmare.
@@floro7687 Not all of them, my 350 SE Its in perfect shape
Agree! Amazing car and awesome design
Both its predecessors had a 4 speed automatic. The W108 6.3 and the W112 300 SEL. This has a 3 speed auto. Not exactly the pinnacle of engineering.
To me these versions of and up to1985 were the most Beautiful models MERCEDES BENZ ever made !! Thanks for Sharing !!
I call the W116 "The last of the chrome bumper mercedes benzs".
Engineers: So, how much fuel economy do you want this car to have?
Mercedes: No.
😂😂😂
For its size and age the fuel econom aint really that bad.
@@ChevyBM I know, I'm a fan of old Mercedes-Benz vehicles. Plus, I plan on buying an old S-class with a 5L V8 in the near future. However, as my family has been Mercedes-equipped for the last 40 years, I can say that the fuel economy, is pretty tragic, even on relatively recent cars (15 - 25 years). I'm not bashing Mercedes, because, what you lack in fuel economy, you make up for with comfort and safety (plus reliability in the older vehicles).
PS: When I say my family, I mean my parents and grandparents, as I am 17 right now. As for the S class I want to purchase, that's for next year when I go to university -prices for gasoline and LPG, as well as cars themselves, are really quite low in Bulgaria.
@@thomaskoutsoukis8976 My previous car was a W211 E320 and the average fuel consumption for me was about 13-15l /100km, of my driving about 80% is city driving in Helsinki. That was a really nice car!
Now I drive a 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis with a 4.6l V8 and get about 14-15l /100km. An older S class is a really grate car, the motor and transmission are bulletproof but look out for issues on the Air-matic. And by converting it to LPG really gets the driving costs down! I would love to own an older 60's or 70's Mercedes or then a ~2000's CL 500 or 600 :)
@@ChevyBM Oh wow! We currently own a W211 E200 here in Greece! It's as standard as you can get, with cloth interior and no sunroof, with a 1.8L supercharged engine. We only got it a month ago as a second car to our good-old C180 from 1994 (also as basic as you can get it, it doesn't even have the cassette holder on the main dash). So far we have gotten around 12L/100km in the last 600km traveled, that being mostly city driving. (The old C180 gets like 14-15L/100km overall)
The S-class I really like and want, is the W220 face-lift variant (2003-2006). I've done a lot of research on it, and it seems that the V8s are the most reliable, as for the gearbox, I don't mind getting the 5-speed one, though the 7-speed would be quite nice, but less reliable. As for the airmatic, that's my biggest worry, however I believe that if I take a car I really like for a 100% checkup at Mercedes before buying, I'm going to find a good car.
When it comes to fuel economy, the S500 is gonna be quite a pain, even with LPG, but, considering the car's low purchase price, (4000 - 6000 euro) I'd rather spend the money I'd pay for a newer economy car (10000 - 20000 euro) for gas and get the comfort and luxury (plus the style bonus).
My Dad had one of this car Mercedes Benz 450 SEL, I had a wonderful memories with my dad with this car.
This car is amazing, powerful and so fast.
The sound of the engine is still in my head......
Incredibly smooth! That has to be one of the best highway cars of all time.
Hard to believe it's over 40 years old.
This brings back memories, I had a 1974 Mercedes 350 SE with the smaller V-8, same body style.
And took a drive to Germany & autobahn, the comfortable road-cruiser just humming along with power under the hood & comfort inside.
I still miss that car sometimes...
I have a 1976 w116 and I think swap for the Toyota engine 1gr fe
I have the same car, awesome, i love the W116, but it take a lot of gas so i dont use it so often, sadly
Me to have a 1976 350SE w116 dark gray, one of the best car what I have in my life...after I have a 280E 1984 Too great car, after mercedes beginning whit al plastic and my dream finish..

Not like on this one!!!! Greetings and thanks to every guy who worked at this wonderful car producer back in the day that maybe will be watching this video!!! From an Italian town twinned with a German one 🇩🇪🇮🇹
I spent 3 years in Germany from the late 70's to early 80's and saw these magnificent machines blazing around the Autobahns. I knew a German Doctor who drove (of all things) a Renault LeCar. He would push that little thing on the Autobahn and I thought if we wreck, there won't be enough to put in a cigar box. We had gone out to dinner one night and as we were leaving parked right out front was a beautiful M1. I was drooling all over myself to be in the presence of such a machine. My friend said "forget it, I am not a dentist" (they made big bucks). The owner came out a few minutes later and they started talking and my friend said get in, he'll take you for a short ride. We hit the Autobahn outside of Wiesbaden (and sorry to say this stretch had speed limits) but he put it through it's paces. Wow. What a machine. My friend was looking at a Le Car Alpina (roll cage, tweaked engine and suspension. Fortunately he couldn't fit it because he was 6' 5" and the roll bar was hitting him in the head (and it was probably a good thing because he was not a good driver). He DID get a Golf GTI. He drove that thing like a bat out of Hell and passed a few Mercedes and BMW's and Porsche's and they caught up to us but it took a little time.
If I could have any Mercedes, it would be a 450 SEL 6.9. Fast, safe and luxurious.
Oh my God. This is a real Mercedes.
i had the privilege to drive this masterpiece when i was young thanks to my father, i still remember the torque and deep driving impact ... priceless
Cette voiture m avait fait un effet fabuleux quand j étais petit,42 ans après ça ne se dement pas, elle est et reste une voiture de haute performance et actuelle.
Brings back memories of riding in my Dad’s 77’ 280se sedan back in the day. He drove fast and smooth just like this. Dad also had a 71’ 300sel 6.3 which was the predecessor to this 6.9 but the bodies were much different. This body is more akin to his 77’ 280.. Thank you for the experience..
Naturally aspirated engines love driving fast, they come alive even more. Couldn't wait for this spirited drive.
Immer noch schön anzusehen, dieser wunderschöne Benz!!!!! Einfach Eleganz pur....und was für ein Sound..ein wahrer Sternenkreuzer..
A blend of luxury, handling, power, acceleration, speed and relaxing comfort. Who can touch this. NOBODY
Saw this model personally a couple of times driving . It still has an impressive performance, but back in the day it was outright crazy. You saw all these W116 Mercs stately gliding along and then this! Surely the stealthiest of all stealth "muscle cars".

Are new Mercedes not reliable?
@@reshad3290 if they're made in Germany, they're not bad. However, if made somewhere else, not good either. German cars (all the brands) made a transition back in the 90's from being known for world-class reliability to being loaded with the latest technology and have embraced the concept of planned obsolescence.
I still see some older Mercedes (from the 80's and earlier) rolling around in my town but, you don't see (hardly) any in the 10-20 year old range because they become endless money pits.

What an utterly utterly amazing car!! Im truly stunned by this video. Thank you so much!
I had a '79 euro model (grey market import to the US). It truly was bank-vault quiet in the interior at speeds in excess of 100mph. This video really conveys just how rock solid it is at speed. No front end lift, no loss of steering, no sway. You CAN drive it with two fingers at speed. All in all, probably the best 1970's performance car made (beyond, IMO, Ferrari and Lamborghini offerings of the period).
I owned this exact model in the mid 1980s. What a car. You could go up to 100mph on Texas roads - quiet as church inside, and you felt like you were going 30mph.
