    Belgium Multilanguage explained
    Dutch - About 60% of the population speaks Dutch as their primary language. Dutch as spoken in the Netherlands, also called Northern Dutch, is closely related to Dutch as spoken in Flanders, also called Flemish or Southern Dutch. Dutch is the official language of the Flemish Community and of the Flemish Region (merged into Flanders) and together with French in the Brussels-Capital Region. The main dialects spoken in Belgium are: Brabantish, West Flemish, East Flemish and Limburgish. The original Brabant dialect was strongly influenced by French, which was for a long time the only official administrative language. In East Flanders and West Flanders there is also a historical remnant of the then official language of French.
    French - The second most spoken language is French. This is the official language in the French Community and it is the dominant language in Wallonia. French is also spoken in the Brussels-Capital Region, where some have French as their mother tongue (50%) or as a lingua franca (45%). There are many Flemish people who speak French as a second language.
    German - German is the smallest language in Belgium. It is spoken as a mother tongue by only 0.7% of the entire population. The inhabitants (76,300) of the German-speaking Community are 97% German-speaking. This area was awarded to Belgium by the Treaty of Versailles in 1919 as compensation for the suffering suffered during the First World War.

    Nice one Charlie. Glad to see you back again.
    The 3 parts of Belgium she mentioned are probably the Dutch speaking part, the French speaking part and either the German speaking part or Brussels, which is kind of on its own.

    Im just shocked she actually understood Dutch a bit. The girl asked "waarom denk je dat" (why do you think that) and the American Girl just responded with "I think because its similar to german but its not german"

    Well done Charlie! And Flemish Dutch indeed can be hard to understand for Standard Dutch speakers and vice versa.

    First (German) girl: you could already tell from her saying "Hallo", despite that the word is the same in Dutch (and French, and only barely different in English). The German "L" is distinctive, the middle of the tongue touches the palate rather than the tip. That's actually safer than ik-ich, because there are Dutch dialects (Limburgs) that are also "ich" (but with short i, not long like German)

    Belgiums all speak Vlaams or French but they learn both in school,but proud French Belgiums refruse to speak Vlaams so it is a lot harder to speak to them if you do not speak French,i know from my vacations there 😅

      @ThW5 5 місяців тому

      Well, a double continent, but the world is full of Americas, Amerikas, Little Americas and the like... Just in the Netherlands there are already more than 90 of them, most fanous among those are probably America, a village in Limburg, and Klein Amerika, near Groesbeek where the 505th PIR had their drop zone during Market Garden.
