Fireworks are banned in certain cities in NL, the list is growing every year - being the law abiding citizens that we Dutch are, we obviously utterly ignore the ban :)

'Hoezo vuurwerk verboden?' does not mean 'Why are fireworks banned?'It means: 'What makes you think that fireworks are banned?'and then showing you that people are still lighting fireworks.

Yea it's confusing. With covid they tried a national ban cause the hospitals had enough work at the time. Covid is over and now theres no national ban anymore. But certain cities and towns banned it but they are not actively fining for it so yea.
The problem with fireworks in my eyes is not the new years fireworks. You can keep your pets inside right. The problem is, it starts in october with real heavy firework meaning very loud bangs. Cobra's are so powerful, you can blow up a car. That stuff. Not the nice stuff at new years eve.

@@TRW98 Especially as everywhere they banned it they also sait there would be no enforcements.
Greetings from Eindhoven where it was also (officially) banned.

Once I was fortunate enough to celebrate New Years in Hawaii (2009-2010) and at 12 o’clock there were no fireworks… not even a local show. To us Dutchies it didn’t feel like the new year had started properly.
When my mom called 11 hours earlier I could clearly hear all the fireworks go off at her end. That was a strange experience because it was still midday for us and we were having lunch. People around us looked at us weirdos who were already excitedly wishing Happy New Years. I pointed at the phone and said ‘it’s Europe’ for them to understand.

Where I live, in Dordrecht, i noticed that people have been concentrating the fireworks a bit more around midnight instead of firing off a lot the month around midnight xD which is nice for the cats ^^

Last year, on December 31 2023, people were only allowed to set off ornamental fireworks from 18:00 - 02:00 the next day. As we expected there were also millions of people who set off fireworks and illegal firework bombs.... It was estimated that 105 Million Euros worth of fireworks were sold in the Netherlands and a total of 4 people were killed and many injured. 1 x police car was completely destroyed (burnt out) by fireworks bombs. All in all, a pleasant New Year's Eve.. *Smart Dutch guys had driven to Germany with their van to buy a big load of fireworks. (+75 kg) Driving home again, one of the occupants of the van decided to throw his burning cigarette out of the open window... Not smart! As a result, this cigarette was blown back into the car and you can probably guess what happened next?... That's right! The load of fireworks 75 Kg in total went up in flames! Roken van sigaretten maakt meer kapot dan je lief is!

This is all legal, expensive, fireworks! It is a beautiful spectacle all over the country!
But... In another city a firework bomb, illegal, blow the windows out of five houses and twenty cars.
In yet another place a 19 y.o. was killed by, presumably illegal, fireworks.
Doctors at first aid complained that there were even more wounded than last year.

That was cool 🤩. We had about half of that here in my city in Northern Finland but it was still a great show. I love fireworks and even though I know that fireing them between buildings like that is not exactly safe I still get giddy about it. It feels amazing when you can feel the blast in your body, smell the gunpowder and see the bright lights everywhere. A whole body sensory overload of greatness 🎉🎉🎉.

All over the country people spent 109 million euro on fireworks this time, and that is only the legal fireworks sold in The Netherlands. A lot of people go to Germany or Belgium to buy heavier fireworks, also the explosion bangs, but that is mostly illegal. So add a couple of millions euros extra, mayby 20?
Ofcource accidents happen, 18 young people lost a hand (or part of it), 12 of them being ypounger than 18. About 50 people were brought to the specialized eye-hospital in Rotterdam only, some of them blinded for life.... For the whole country, I don't know. So yeah, that is the other side of this country.

They banned the use of fireworks in some cities at the same time they couldn't block sellers from legally selling fireworks because it isn't possible to forbid in one city and not in another. Typically Dutch politics at work. What they think that people buy and then move to find a legal spot outside their city?

  • @darjonvanommeren1244
    @darjonvanommeren1244 9 місяців тому

One of the reasons people ignore the ban is that Hubert Bruls (the mayor of Nijmegen) is also one of the leaders of a safety group who really hate fireworks. Everyone thinks the same about him, just a really fat meatball who just likes to push his own opinion to the people

And it was indeed quite alot that flew into the sky this year, though thats not what bothered me, it was that on Monday people had't cleaned up at all so all the bike paths and street corner was littered with boxes from fireworks and such, some people really need to learn some manners....

Charlie first off all a happy New year to you and your family. They banned the fireworks because some People fire fireworks at the firefighters, police and the ambulance workers. Thats why. But we are not dutch to listen to what the covernment is saying to us. Thats why we ignore the ban. You simply can not take our tradidtion away from us. Just like Black Piet.

My oldest childhood memories of New Year’s Eve include my (Dutch) grandfather lighting fireworks. We’d get a safety briefing and were to strictly adhere to the rules he set.
When my sister moved to The Netherlands and married into a Dutch family, I got reminded of the Duchess love for fireworks to ring in the New Year. Her FIL and her husband buy a lot of fireworks (no ban where they live) and just like when I was a little girl, the family fireworks start with a security briefing. Depending on age and common sense of each family member or SO, everyone gets to channel their inner pyromaniac. Sparklers for the young ones or not-so-smart ones, stronger stuff for those with enough sense to handle it. No one ever dared challenge the family safety rules so far:
Everyone, even spectators, wears safety goggles
Only use safety fuses to light fireworks, never a lighter
Airborne fireworks to be firmly anchored via its anchoring point, ensuring liftoff in the desired direction (over water where my sister lives)
Only one person at a time is allowed to light fireworks. Once (s)he is done lighting one or more pieces and they’ve gone off, someone else gets to have a go.
Anyone not lighting fireworks at that very moment is a spectator and stands (no sitting!) behind the safety line/spectator line.
Before lighting any fireworks from the batch you’re planning to light at one time, you check the fuse time so you have ample time to move away and you count off that time OUT LOUD. The second you’re done lighting your piece(s), you haul ass to the safety line
Always have an assigned buddy to yank you to safety
Clothing must be made out of cotton, leather, and/or wool. No synthetics.
Preferably wear well fitting gloves, too.
All spectators keep an eye out for animals/humans that might unexpectedly cause danger to the person handling the fireworks or themselves.
Any fireworks that don’t light correctly (or at all) get disposed off, no second attempt at lighting them. EVER.
Fire extinguishers, fire blankets etc all checked, up to date, and at the ready. There’s ALWAYS at least one person holding fire extinguishing equipment at the ready, preferably more.
This year, my daughter’s boyfriend experienced his first Dutch family fireworks. He got to witness a whole new side to his girlfriend. 😂

It's not a small scale event. It's tradition that allot of people in every city and town light up fireworks at 12 'o clock on new years. This year the people in the Netherlands bought around like 107 millions euros worth of fireworks in the Netherlands and that is just the legal stuff bought here, allot of people also buy it in Germany as it is cheaper and to a certain amount legal and of course there is as a pretty big illegal market. So this was filmed at 12 'o clock when all the people start (sure some people light some before and after of course) lighting all the fireworks together and this is just a random part of a city, this or allot crazier is what all of the Netherlands looks like at that time
