  • My Astro Van AC only comes out of the defrost vents. I show how to remove the Dog House and access the engine from inside the van. I find an issue with my 2002 Chevy Astro Vans vacuum system. I repair the vacuum system to get the air conditioning to come out of vents properly.

Want to tell you how spot on your repair was. I had a local company replace the blower fan, wiring harness and resistor. When they were done they told me that the actuator behind the dash wasn’t working. I was told it was about 7 hours labor and they really didn’t recommend doing it as the plastic would crack and so on.
I verified the system worked off vacuum and looked at one other video aside from yours which he said remove the air cleaner and he used the small hard vacuum line like the factory. Once I watched your video it was much more straight forward and the interior dog house I just loosened and moved to the right so I could access the vacuum valve on the right valve cover. I did it just as you did including replacing the short hose closest to the firewall which was also very degraded and everything works like a champ!!! Thank you so much

Only man that actually went into the doghouse to show where that hose actually connects. All the other videos I've found, the dudes stand in front of the van and say "the hose attaches back in there somewhere" really

I try to show most my work. Too many talk about what they did. Yet hide their actual work. My other channel is The HVAC Hacker and most vids show a lot of the jobs. Some like it, some thing it’s too much.

And it's a bear to get to just like everything else on an Astro. Great vans though.

Let me add another thumbs up for this video. I too had a working AC that wouldn't blow out of the vents, even though the Heat would blow out the vents. After finding this video and watching it I figured that was my problem. My doghouse and engine cover on my 1999 Astro van were slightly different than shown in the video, but I still got them off. The covers are VERY tight to the space and I was never able to get the engine cover all the way out. Plus the nipple of the vac hose is VERY awkward to reach, but it's doable and it is in the location he indicates.
I was hoping that I'd find a broken or disconnected tube as he did, but instead I found a completely intact hard plastic tube and two intact rubber l-shaped nipples. Crestfallen, I thought I had not found the problem. I snipped them about two inches from each end and tested them underwater. It looked good, but I replaced it anyway using a much smaller hose than the one he uses in the video.
It worked. I'm not sure why, the other one must have had some unseen leaks somewhere, maybe at the nipples? I dunno, all I can say is if you have this problem, replace the whole hose.

Wow, I just checked the hoses on my newly acquired 1997 astro and they were BRITTLE. In fact, there were coming apart as I grabbed them. Thanks for the video, now I know what’s wrong!

I have "patched" this damn hose a couple of times and it finally broke way down at the bottom. Lord knows my hands will not fit down there from the front. Glad to see I can get at it really easy with the dog house off. The best part that got me all jazzed was replacing the crappy hose with a fuel line. Off to the store to get me some fuel line. Thank you.

Cool I love Astro vans but I HATE WORKING ON ASTRO VANS.
They had to be designed by someone with tiny hands and arms and a sadistic streak. Always double your labor time at least on these. And don't forget to add days to replace the parts you'll break just getting to the part you wanted

I too had this vacuum line break. The 1/4" fuel line repair works but I worry why they made such tiny line in the first place. So, I put a 2" piece of1/4" copper tube inline and squeezed it down to a tiny I.D. in hopes of duplicating the flow the original line had. The original line speaks volumes to me. Must be protecting something delicate that needs low flow. This hose assembly ACDelco 15-30578 A/C Accumulator Hose is no longer available anywhere or I would have bought it. Anyone know where???

Dumb question, but what does the vacuum hose actually do? Does the vacuum somehow work as a switch? Your vent air isn’t actually going through the hose, right?

Redo the video . We never saw wher you plugged it in the front. You would need to bring the camera closer so we can appreciate both ends. The video is worthless at the end.
