New subscriber here! Anyhow, I’m also a Data Analyst in the healthcare industry, and I agree with Alex over his summary on what most data analyst do. For starters, learning a database language (like SQL) is vital as well as being familiar on basic programming languages (like XML, JavaScript, Python, etc.) and reporting and analytics tools like Power BI, Tableau, Zoho, etc. It’s also important to have basic understanding over best practices to implement data quality and security, especially when you’re dealing with sensitive data like peoples’ financial and health information.
That's true! I think XML and JSON, both of which are semi structured data, can be a bit more complicated for beginners in the actual ingestion phase. Definitely a great are to know. And for sure, the healthcare industry especially has a lot of sensitive data - great to know data security especially if you don't have a DBA or Data Engineer on you team. At my company we do so this does not fall on the Data Analysts as much. Thanks for subscribing! Hope you enjoy the content :)
Hello. I want to get into data analysis in the healthcare field but what I wanted to ask is it a good step to take medical billing and coding classes also?
Keep in mind not all companies have programmers to do the ETL work. I'm a Sr. Data Analyst and I'm responsible for the entire process from start to finish. Sometimes Data Analyst also perform the workloads of Data Engineers, Data Scientists, etc.
For the role of the programmers mentioned in the video and this comment, what is their job description? Are they data engineers? Database engineers? Do they design the company websites to collect the data? Any and all expansion on this would be very helpful.
Glad I saw your comment. Just about to start a job and from the interview process, they want me to cover all these roles! I will see where it takes me anyways. Hope it's all going well at your end x
Funny story - I have a bachelor degree in Computer Engineering and I am specializing myself in Big Data. The interview went very well but they noticed a passion and predisposition to data in the way I talked. So now they want another interview with me next week directly for a data analyst junior position. That's why I am here. I didn't request the interview, it was offered. So, now I am trying to understand a little bit better the job and requirements.

Hi Alex, I'm happy to see you respond to viewers regularly. I recently graduated with a BS in International Business and would like to pursue a career in data analytics, probably in the fields of business, marketing, or economics. Because of the way the programs at my university's business school are laid out, I could go back and do 2 part-time semesters, while continuing to work my current job, to receive a BS in Information Systems with a focus in Business Analytics. This would be cheaper than most of the boot camps I've seen, and seemingly from a more legitimate institution. Is this something you would recommend? I'm not sure if the same knowledge/experience could be achieved/demonstrated through a cheaper or easier channel. Much love from North Cack, and keep up the good work.
I think in your case both options are viable. I think preferably you would get a BS in IS, but if that time is not available a bootcamp may be a good way to go!

Hey Alex, thanks for this video. About the requirements for data analyst, would you say a person changing careers without a bachelor's in math, statistics e, etc is expected to find it difficult to access the market? I know that you have done such a thing, but I would like to hear your current perspective on it.
you are doing really well to help IT people.....giving that knowledge for free is the thing that no one does....I really appreciate, thanks a load and god bless you....
I'm an Information Systems student in college right now. Data analytics is a common job for people with my somewhat unusual field of study. It's something to look into if you want something focused on data and information (also don't have to take as much calculus haha).
I hold a statistics degree, currently doing a post graduate diploma in data analytics. I have been teaching myself Sql which was so much fun i must now moving to Python then i'll learn some basics in power BI and start applying for jobs next year. I'm so excited to start a career in data analytics. Your video was so helpful. Thank you❤
Thank you for the knowledge, I am learning python and have seen lots of analyst jobs out there. I know that Numpy and pandas can be useful so I appreciate the insight as to what one would need.
Thank you so much for the video. This channel is a goldmine of useful information and I hope you get more exposure soon :)! Question: Would you consider your SQL skills to be basics or something more advanced? I'm guessing you're just doing querying as a DA and not building tables or the infrastructure of tables? Could you give some SQL examples, like are you using advances case statements or relatively basic things like JOINS, SUMS, AVG, etc.
Thanks for the kind words Josh! For Entry level just the basics should be enough to get a you a job. Some Entry level positions may need Intermediate level where you need to know Joins, Aggregate Functions, Unions, Sub-Queries, etc.. I have a few videos on this as well as some tutorials I'm still currently making on Intermediate SQL. Hope that helps!
I just came accross this video .. thanks for the help!! I have a bachelor in Marketing and now planning on pursuing my Masters in Business analytics .. do you think they’re a good match??
Thank you for your insight, I am interested in taking a deeper dive into data analyzing. Currently working in quality assurance and general insurance policy information processing
Alex, I cannot seem to find proper list of Main Duties and Responsibilities for a Data Analyst. This is the best I could see online: • Designing and maintaining data systems and databases; this includes fixing coding errors and other data-related problems. • Mining data from primary and secondary sources, then reorganizing said data in a format that can be easily read by human. • Using statistical tools to interpret data sets, paying particular attention to trends and patterns that could be valuable for diagnostic and predictive analytics efforts. • Demonstrating the significance of their work in the context of local, national, and global trends that impact both the organization and industry. • Preparing reports for executive leadership that effectively communicate trends, patterns, and predictions using relevant data. • Collaborating with programmers, engineers, and organizational leaders to identify opportunities for process improvements, recommend system modifications, and develop policies for data governance. • Creating appropriate documentation that allows stakeholders to understand the steps of the data analysis process and duplicate or replicate the analysis if necessary. What do you think?
I'm struggling to understand what the tasks are. So basically, your head is in a computer utilizing a different language so that you can map out a solution for a client's request? Are you basically reading? Is that the job? Reading and writing? I'm looking into schooling for this because I have a marketing and consumer-moving skillset, and I'm not able to accept things at face value, and I tend to analyze. I was referred to this position. I still can't figure out what it is that y'all do.
I think there are a lot of factors that go into that - if you’re 65+ it may a bit too late? But if you’re 30-40 that just means you have a lot of domain experience in another field that you can apply to analytics. Hardly ever to late to jump in!
@@AlexTheAnalyst Hi...I am 59 and unemployed. There is a workforce center assisting me to find work, but they also have a program where I can go to school to be certified as a Data Analyst. I don't have to pay for the classes. I am nervous that I will go through this program and won't be able to find work because of my age. What are your thoughts?
Hello there! Wonderful videos. Definitely helped me understand more of what this job entails. You mentioned degrees briefly in your video. Is a bachelor's required for entry level? I have an associate's in an unrelated field, and was hoping after online courses or a bootcamp to hopefully get my foot in the door with an entry level job, then work on the degrees to move up. Is this a feasible plan, or do I need a bachelor's to even get in the door?
I don't think a bachelor's is absolutely required, but it will help a lot. Most jobs do require a bachelors as a prerequisite. Bootcamps can be an okay option depending on the bootcamp itself and your current situation, but in general I don't advise them. I made a video on bootcamps a few weeks back. Just going off the information you provided I would probably try to work on my skills independently for a while. At least get yourself comfortable with all of the staples of Data Analysis. After that you could go to a bootcamp if you want or you could start building a portfolio and ramping up your resume to try to get some experience through an internship, mentorship, or volunteering. Really any experience at all will help a lot. After that try to get an entry-level position. Hope that helps!
Can knowledge in economics, finance or marketing be of advantage in the analytics profession? Aside from job and year of experience, what else can help a junior data analyst to move up to mid-level? Is age a BIG FACTOR in getting a junior role in the U.S?
Yes, your degree can be a big factor depending on the industry you're applying for. The biggest thing to move from junior to mid-level is experience and higher education (master's degree). I wouldn't say age specifically as much as experience, although those two normally go hand in hand.
Honestly this sounds fun and really interesting how data works. I have barely started and im surprised that i never knew about coding only about tv shows hackers lol but this sounds awesome can’t wait to learn more
2 minutes in, I realized this work isnt for me, but when I got to the end where you show the salary, I was shocked how low it is. I thought Data Analysts made like $150k per year.
Hello Sir Alex, Keep the amazing work up! Your channel is really helpful for Aspiring data analyst/scientist. I'm 18 and recently moved to the UK. Having 2 years experience in object oriented programming in C/C++ and recently started python, I was looking to continue my college, would you recommend me to get a bachelor's first and then apply for a Data job or should I try getting an online certification and apply for an entry level job whilst pursuing my degree? I would love to know your opinions from a students perspective.
I'm wondering this as well. In my country there is an 8 month "junior data analyst" course where you actually get a mentor and stuff and it does look interesting...but I'm not sure it would work without a related degree
The Salary Part is definitely not comprehensible. Thats hell a lot of roles combined into one. A Data Engineer, Data Architect, Data Validator, Data Visualization Expert, Automation Specialist. In big organizations each role will have multiple members. Hence I have a problem with Salary Component in this video alone. Agreed that it will not be Salary * 5. But definitely not less than $ 150 (min). I may be wrong. Happy to be corrected. Purely coming from the amount of effort involved.
I hear this is a good career choice for felons. I really need help. Tired of feeling like a loser. I don't want to dedicate myself to something and be turned down again.
I am looking to become a data analyst although my degree is in business management. I have been working as a merchandising analyst utilize mostly PowerBI to export data and Excel to create reports. I hope you land an entry level data analyst position so I can get more skills to pay the bills lol
Hey, I started the google Coursera for DA following your reccomendations. I am really enjoying. I am learning a lot about SQL and its functions and syntaxes. Which software should I purchase to create my projects? I have MS.
Actually all data analysts are not done this work as like u said.since in every process one process engineer to stabilize and visualise the status on control tower to maintain SLA attrition employees deployment erc etc .. data analyst just work on clear and clean the data and send to sme .
Every data analyst position is different, but this video is talking about Data Analysts as a whole. At a small company a Data Analyst may do all of these roles themselves. At a large company you may have Data Engineers, Developers, Architects, and Visualization Specialists who do a lot of what I talked about in this video. As a whole these are all the things a Data Analyst should know and be able to do.
I recently graduated with a masters degree in zoology and did a lot of data analysis in my degree, and so am now looking to get into data analysis. I’m looking at getting into it from the angle of environmental / ecological data analysis. Do you think it’d be possible to get into data science this way?
College degree or math necessary? I’ve seen excellent salary ranges for this role. It’s an ideal career if you don’t mind staring at screen for hours and hours. I’m for coding in general, but different from this data analytics stuff. Though, this may be a nice role if you like running reports day in day out. Before I even watch all the video I’d say you’d have to at least be versed in mathematics to a minimum statistics and or calculus due to the intense analytical work that goes into this job. You have to visualize this data which is what a data analyst does. I’m still for web development then web apps down the line but just find this video and this guy interesting and motivating 🙂
Your video seems to be from a "consultant" point of view, but what if you're an analyst and the manager tells you they want a report with medians and means and statistics but doesn't provide a way to get that data? Where can I find a company to hire me where they actually care about my input and want to help me refine their requirements rather than bark orders that are impossible to fulfill?
Hi Alex ! I just obtained my bachelors degree International Business, no previous experience at programming nor maths (just common accounting). I applied to a master in business analytics which is basically Data analysis, do you recommend me to go straight to it or I should take sometime to study or develop the math skills and programming ones ? Thanks, btw great video !
I searched through your videos to see if you have addressed the connection AI may or may not have in your field. Do you have a video on the concern that AI will take away jobs in your field or do you think it will?
I'm getting my bachelor's in English. I was wondering about data and statistics in masters. But I realized that edx and other programs do offer the same info, and sometimes better than uni.
Hello Alex! I don't have a experience in programming. I'm a just a newbie willing to learn new things . I am interested to be a data analyst ... can u give me tips ? Thanks
As i understand the demand for different roles including data analyst rises by a lot lately. Are the salaries you present still the same? If not how the numbers look like now?
Hi Alex, so I have question. What is the reality of needing a degree against getting a certificate? I keep hearing that a lot of companies are hiring with just certificates. I just don't want to waste my time and money.
I have watched a lot of videos and folks are so long winded and don’t say a thing at all! Thank you for getting to the point!

Side note, I definitely plan to do a Python course after the cert so I can work in it as well as R
Very clear and straight forward
Nice job
Thank you, Alex! You summed everything up perfectly.
Wow!..Thank you for this ! Love the info. I am currently working in a bank in Finance group were I learned to use SQL for data extraction and MIS reports. Now I am starting to study and learning Python. Am I in the right track as well?.haha! I want to shift to a data analyst role too.
Sounds like you're on the right track to me! Good luck!
Hey Alex, thanks for this video. About the requirements for data analyst, would you say a person changing careers without a bachelor's in math, statistics e, etc is expected to find it difficult to access the market? I know that you have done such a thing, but I would like to hear your current perspective on it.
Ff up
you are doing really well to help IT people.....giving that knowledge for free is the thing that no one does....I really appreciate, thanks a load and god bless you....
Your videos are a big inspiration! just started out my own youtube (from my experience as a data analyst) All the best!
Straight to the point. Better than thousands of video’s. Thanks dude.
What should I do after High school to become a Data analyst in the gaming industry?
STATIC I would focus on majors like Computer Science or Graphic Design and take classes related to Data Analytics while pursuing that degree.
I'm an Information Systems student in college right now. Data analytics is a common job for people with my somewhat unusual field of study. It's something to look into if you want something focused on data and information (also don't have to take as much calculus haha).
@@weldin ive been looking for this exact answer since i’m getting into colleges for IS and started to get concerned about job prospects. thank you!
Would you say you spend a majority of your time is spent in the Collect and Clean steps? Just say yes to make me feel better lol
Haha yes - that is where 75% of my time is spent. Definitely a big part of the job.
@@AlexTheAnalyst will you use the pandas library for cleaning the data or something else? Please reply .
Its easy ryt
@AlexTheAnaisnt ut easylyst
Thank you very much for this video and info. 😊
Thank u so much…you were direct, to the point, no bs, and answered the questions most people came here in search of…👍
Well done! Condensed a lot of information into a very practical video. Thanks!
Vey good! Simple, clear and easy to understand. Plus, I like tall the covered fields you spoke about. Thanks, Alex!
I saw that Google is providing a free certification course through Coursera. Would that be enough to obtain a job as a data analyst?
yea
Can you post a link to that free course?
Can you please share the link here ?

Its not actually free. Its a 7 days free trial :)
Thank you❤
do u have to code in python?
Very thorough & helpful thanks! ❤
Thank you for the knowledge, I am learning python and have seen lots of analyst jobs out there. I know that Numpy and pandas can be useful so I appreciate the insight as to what one would need.
4 minutes and 18 seconds straight brain spasms! 😂 😂 😂
On the point! Answered many questions!
Wow, this very informative and to the the point! Thank you 🙏
Thank you so much for the video.
Really straightforward. Enjoyed it.
Thank you for getting to the point!
I just came accross this video .. thanks for the help!!
I have a bachelor in Marketing and now planning on pursuing my Masters in Business analytics .. do you think they’re a good match??
I'm currently working as a Data Analyst III, and I'm searching for a full time position.
You mentioned the degrees that are preferred for this job, would a bachelors in CiS seem suitable? Thinking of changing to that major. Great videos!
Yes it would be a great major!
Thank you for your insight, I am interested in taking a deeper dive into data analyzing. Currently working in quality assurance and general insurance policy information processing
I am sure this video will have more than 1M views in 5 years.
Goals
Not far off!
Alex, I cannot seem to find proper list of Main Duties and Responsibilities for a Data Analyst. This is the best I could see online:
• Designing and maintaining data systems and databases; this includes fixing coding errors and other data-related problems.
I think all of it on some level is accurate so I think it looks good!
I still can't figure out what it is that y'all do.
very straight and concise information..Thank you
thanks man really understood
hey man love the videos, but was wondering your thoughts on if it is ever too late to hop into the data analytics field
This is exactly me right now, how did it go mate?
As crisp and clear as it could be. Thanks for the video.
This is so helpful. I've been more clueless than I realized. Thank you!
Great Video !
Thank you for being transparent.
Hey Alex, this helped a lot thanks!
Sibei well summarised I'm gonna be a data analyst one day!!
Purely coming from the amount of effort involved.
thanks for sharing
Thanks bruh you're helping me out with my homework
I hear this is a good career choice for felons. I really need help. Tired of feeling like a loser. I don't want to dedicate myself to something and be turned down again.
Thank you!
How much Maths does a data analyst needs to learn and/or use? Please, its the only thin that holds me back from considering it as an option.
I am looking to become a data analyst although my degree is in business management. I have been working as a merchandising analyst utilize mostly PowerBI to export data and Excel to create reports. I hope you land an entry level data analyst position so I can get more skills to pay the bills lol
Thank you so much for this video! Very informative and succinct. This is definitely going to help me make an educated decision for my future career.
Awesome video!!
Hey, I started the google Coursera for DA following your reccomendations. I am really enjoying. I am learning a lot about SQL and its functions and syntaxes. Which software should I purchase to create my projects? I have MS.
Brilliant definition
This was helpful!
You don't even need to put it on 2x
Your video seems to be from a "consultant" point of view, but what if you're an analyst and the manager tells you they want a report with medians and means and statistics but doesn't provide a way to get that data? Where can I find a company to hire me where they actually care about my input and want to help me refine their requirements rather than bark orders that are impossible to fulfill?
Great video
Very informative.
Hey what are you doing now?
I searched through your videos to see if you have addressed the connection AI may or may not have in your field. Do you have a video on the concern that AI will take away jobs in your field or do you think it will?
I'm getting my bachelor's in English. I was wondering about data and statistics in masters. But I realized that edx and other programs do offer the same info, and sometimes better than uni.
Hello Alex! I don't have a experience in programming. I'm a just a newbie willing to learn new things . I am interested to be a data analyst ... can u give me tips ? Thanks
Im just a graduate but Im afraid like I wont be trained to be a data analyst would be expected to know everything upfront
This is my next hurdle. A data analyst
nice one alex
Alex please tell me that what are the methods you are using to clean up the data in pandas . Can you make a dedicated video on this topic.
I will definitely be making a whole video series on data cleaning in SQL and in Python.
@@AlexTheAnalyst ok
Helpful 🎉😊
As i understand the demand for different roles including data analyst rises by a lot lately. Are the salaries you present still the same? If not how the numbers look like now?
How long can I study data analytics to become entry level?
Hi Alex, so I have question. What is the reality of needing a degree against getting a certificate? I keep hearing that a lot of companies are hiring with just certificates. I just don't want to waste my time and money.
I’m wondering this as well 🤔 I feel like degrees are not as necessary in todays world.
