My issue with the Jethro is it feels too forward heavy with that short handle. I see a clear choil, but it's actually painful to try and put your hand in that position. I really wanted to like it. I really really want the 45 in 1070 with a saber grind. Give it another number, but make it!

Better sheath would be better, and an ambidextrous sheath would be nice. I'm an old left handed bushcrafter and I have been carrying right handed sheaths on my left side for years. Ya get used to having to turning the knife around to use it.
Knife designers and end users are guilty with both of these designs, choils serve less purpose on large knives than smaller blades as it promotes an improper technique that facilitates wrist fatigue and danger due to the length and heft of the blade. The Jethro also falls victim to the actual edge ending well over an inch from the choil, that edge area is critical on a khukuri style blade and many makers seem to neglect it badly these days. Doing detail work with a large blade isn't hard, simply stick the tip into some wood (edge away from you) and draw the wood backwards towards you. A lot less effort and a lot less danger over all. I still think both these designs still look okay with a choil, even if it is a waste of space in the end.
Living Survival I don't think I've ever pounded a knife, machete or khukuri into the wood before I used that technique. I always use my off hand to support the handle.

i think shrade has solid designs they need to make some premium versions of there good performers i dont mind paying more for quality as long as its not rediculous
I saw a video once where the Leroy was going to chop through a 2 inch tree limb to see how fast it could do so. One chop into the test, the blade had a catastrophic failure. It broke into 2 pieces. I would be interested to know if Schrade has addressed this uncharacteristic error.
FYI per Schrades website they are NOT the same steel. 48 is 3CR13 and the 45 is 8Cr13Mov. IMO the 45 has the superior steel. Great comparison. I have the 45 and was considering getting the 48, your vid may have convinced me. I liked the vine chopping tests the most for some reason.
I cut the belt loop off and made a new loop out of kydex & made a dangler loop. It worked alright but then I made a dangler leather sheath which is much quieter than the plastic sheath.

Say Heah, At a quick look, I could of swore you were going to do a review on my Mutt and Jeff, Mine are the Ka-Bar BK-20 and the BK-4, Mutt is almost a 11" blade and a 1/4" thick and Jeff is 9.3"+ and. 188" thick or 3/16". But big surprises come in small packages. I've been using my BK-4,BK-5 combo for a 2Knife Lite Carry for a while and sometimes just because I was a little tired (lazy) I would baton or chop with the closest at hand knife with great success. Both functioned great and made out of the 1095 CroVan Carbon. Now adding the Beast that I call Mutt in this post, Only time will tell, From my understanding it comes from a military background a knife that was used by the military on jungle use.
I think they are loosing valuable blade real-estate on Jethro with that finger choil and the inch of nothing in front of the choil, I don't see the point in choking up on a blade that big and it could do with out the false edge. Jethro has the better sheath system. Leroy is the better 1 knife option of these two.
I wish that Schrade had continued the cutting edge on the Jethro all the way back instead of leaving that dull area just in front of the choile. The Leroy is sharpened all the way back, which would allow for some finer tasks. And Schrade really needs to add snaps to their velcro closure straps on such big knives. Velcro can become rather useless if it gets dirty in the field. As far as cleaning the grunge on the blade, a small amount of gun oil and a rag will take it right off. Nice review!! ;-)
+Charles Larson agreed on the velcro. the sheaths are a big downer for me but they are functional somewhat. i found that it wasn't comfortable at all to go finer closer to the choil and the belly portion and tip was the sweet spot.

Yeah Ben I concure with you, I like the Jethro allot more than the Leroy. Jethro seemed like it was was more forceful about getting through that red oak than leroy was, which I believe is due to the leverage you get from that recurved roach belly and the Kukri design. There's three things about the 48/Jethro that I don't get Schrade's design logic at all on: 1. (and this is my biggest issue of all) Why on God's green earth did they not finish the sharpened edge all the way back to the choil, ESPECIALLY when the grind/primary bevel goes farther back than the sharpened edge?! I don't get that at all, and it would make it 100x more useful in the choked up position if the sharpened edge when all the way back to the choil, IMO. Having that blank unsharpened spot on the blade makes 0 sense to me. 2. Why did they put the little section of jimping down where the handle is and not on the spine of the blade right above the choil? If you're going to have jimping on a blade, having it above the choil area makes the most sense. Again, IMO. 3. I love the khukukri/kukri design influences, but they should've taken the cue from an actual kukri/khukuri and have the sharp angle bend up about midway in the blade, not back at the handle. That sharp looking point where it bends just screams uncomfortable to me when choked up on the blade using the choil.

Thanks Ben. I was wondering about that Jethro... nice to see you put it in test against the 45. Well done. I don't know that I'd ever purchase either one. I still like better the concept of a lightweight folding saw, and say perhaps an SCHF-52 for the chopping and batoning, along with a good bushcraft knife for finer work. But that's my own preference at this time. I'm sure others may choose one of these as an option. A great job in showing the capabilities of both. Keep up the great work!
Finger choil on the 48 looks safer to use then the 45. 45 Being so close the the cutting edge. Maybe it was just camera angle. Good video as always Ben thanks for the review.

Say Heah, I just ordered my Second Limited Edition from Ka-Bar. My First came with the BK-20 Bonduk Bowie, Its similar to the SCHF 45, but I think my Second Limited Edition is closer with the BK-29 Moses Bowie. The Moses Bowie is 10.624" blade and 1z/4" thick. It's a 1/4" shorter than my BK-20 Bundok Bowie, But the tip is stronger and l@@ks more like the SCHF 45 profile. Yeah, I like Bowies and Khkuris.,,.

I noticed the Leroys nose kicked up more when chopping the vine on the stump , where the Jethro just landed and stayed.
I have a few bowie style blades . I think I'll go for the SCHF48. I like its recurve Kukri style.

You could put the Leroy on your left calf. That would allow you to draw it with your left hand.

such good preforming blades seems like they both have good geometry if better steel was used they would be amazing

Say Heah, I just ordered my Second Limited Edition from Ka-Bar. My First came with the BK-20 Bonduk Bowie, Its similar to the SCHF 45, but I think my Second Limited Edition is closer with the BK-29 Moses Bowie. The Moses Bowie is 10.624" blade and 1z/4" thick. It's a 1/4" shorter than my BK-20 Bundok Bowie, But the tip is stronger and l@@ks more like the SCHF 45 profile. Yeah, I like Bowies and Khkuris.,,.
