I struggle with this for a couple reasons. One, I think my own name sounds uninspiring. Two, I like keeping a hard line between my public artist work vs my day job life. That is, I don't want everyone at my job to dive into all of that stuff, not that there's anything to hide. I'm just a private person, and I like to keep these two worlds in their own boxes. Would value your perspective.

    • @MikeSarge
      @MikeSarge  4 роки тому +18

      Great Points!
#1- Think of it this way. Your name doesn't have to be inspiring to you. But you do need to own that. What makes your name cool isn't solely the name itself...it's that people believe YOU are cool and that YOU are inspiring. Taylor Swift isn't a super special name, but her talent is what makes that name ring.
#2- I can understand wanting to have certain things private. But my question to you would be: Why would you want your career to be private from your co-workers? They may end up being your biggest fans!
#3- Remember, as an artist, singer, rapper, musician, etc... You can be a private person --- but understand you can't have a private career. You can have the GREATEST song or album ever... but if no one knows about you or the release...it won't matter.

Update on this: I found a solution that I feel comfortable with, an artist name that is a slight variation of my real name. It involves my middle name and a fragment of my last name. The result gets the job done, but also doesn't sound too left field. This was also a good compromise given that I really couldn't think of a full pseudonym that didn't sound really cheesy to me.
Also, I was very surprised to discover that my new artist name is barely used by anyone else, so that really closed the deal.

I decided to change my name from Jordan Baywood to Baywood. I looked at my peers in the EDM world and having a shorter name works better on Festival line ups and promotion. It also is cooler to say "I'm going to see Baywood:" and then my real fans will know my first name is Jordan. but it took awhile and I have to make a whole new artist profile but it's worth it to me in the long run.

I was thinking about, as of late, going by my chosen personal name, but once you made the case for having a website and a catalog and blog mentions and google SEO and all that, it just made me say "UGH.... fine." LOL. I've been thinking about the change lately because the vibe of my music is gradually shifting, and, while my current name was made with an intention, I don't know if it's hitting the same way with the vibe of what I'm looking to make like it does for Hip Hop. Open, to feedback on this, brother, thank you for this great video. Subbed!

I didn't come up with a very creative name, as you can see. I regret my name every day and wish I had a name that stood out more.
Last week I decided to go for it, and actually did it. Then I got really cold feet and immediately knew I shot myself in the foot because I would have to start from scratch. I immediately sent an email trying to abort the name change, and changed it back. So now I'm hoping that went smoothly, and that no releases are pending to be taken down and reuploaded from scratch. I hope I can pretend nothing ever happened!
Definitely never ever going to attempt this again, and will make sure that any new artist name I go by sounds unique and decent to begin with

People say that it reminds them too much of juice wrlds name, some people also give me extra pressure simply because of the name. Some time has passed and my following hasn’t blown up yet so I’m wondering if I should take the chance to change my name or not.

If you have distrokid, I’d email them directly to have all your releases changed.
Apple Music specifically requires you to re upload. But we're not known so it’s cool. Not worried about stats either.
What surprised me is that our listeners followed over to the new profiles.
But yeah, our major reason for the band change is because multiple artist we're using the name or similar names. Just wasn’t worth getting lost in the mix for those that did know us and for potential new listeners

a good reason to change a name: if your name is racist or dubious in any other fashion.
e.g. lady antabellum had a racist name which was uncovered for being racist, but they sticked to it for long enough to recieve major backlash. they changed it eventually to lady a, but the damage has already been done and the new name is too similar to do any reparation to the damaged reputation... change your racist artist names before someone makes articles about it :I

    • @ChrisHardyWorld

Lady Antebellum changed their name to "Lady A" because I guess they thought people would associate the word "Antebellum" with racism. Then again, during the anthrax attacks of 2001, the band Anthrax felt like they should keep their name - didn't seem to hurt them.

    • @MikeSarge
      @MikeSarge  4 роки тому +2

That's a valid point for sure. But what i would say is that 2001 wasn't as racially aware as today. At that time, they were still viewed as minority issues - so if i was them I wouldn't have changed either lol

I plan on releasing my music in the next few years or whenever it meets my standards of quality. I need that artwork where people around me will know how much I put into it, then they will show their friends same with someone who finds it on Spotify or another show platform, and from there it’s only up. People where I’m from make alright music but there’s never much substance and I want to show that I am the difference. The only thing I’ve struggled with is changing my name on Instagram and such. I honestly don’t care to have a personal IG because I don’t like posting or anything. But with music I could post whatever I want about music or anything I like in general. But I feel like completely changing my first and last name is a little weird for the people that follow me I guess😭 I love the name I’ve chosen and I think it fits my style music well. the IG handle should be available still in a year or 2. When I’m ready to release Should I do like a 2 week/1 month introduction with IG stories and saying I’m changing my name for music and have worked for years on some music I’m finally releasing etc?

What are your thoughts on people who branch out into separate artist identities for the different styles they approach? For example, indie rock bedroom producer branches out to some other very different genre, their name might not fit a certain aesthetic they're trying to achieve. I think about this because a lot of my stuff fits into 1 of 2 contrasting styles, and it might be a question I have to answer for myself sooner than late.

    • @MikeSarge

Great question! I believe Producers have more room to pick whatever they want as a name lol For example, if there is a producer that wants to work with me but their name isn't related to hip-hop...it doesn't really matter - Me working with them is based on if I like their beats, not if their name is cool. 😅

    • @svansy

creating multiple artist names also results in double the work on marketing... the type of work that most artists feel is the toughest work in the music industry and that the largest part of us hate the most. what makes most struggle.
i personally see the ability to produce diverse sounds as something positive. it indicates your abilities as a musician to be able to cross into various genre's of music and indicates increased artistic skills. one can divide the various styles of music by releases instead of artist names.

I was recently very frustrated. I felt i had a perfect name for when i eventually (imminently) publish my music to spotify. I discovered that my artist namenis already being used by several other artists. Spotify apparently has 12million+ artists and every name i tried to come up with is already in use. I dont want to use my real name, i would ideally like to release anonymously, mostly so that my music is available to anyone who may be interested, but with no commercial ambition. Its annoying because even with names that arent "known" are already being used by obscure artists out there somewhere. What to do...

The first one sounds very Hip-Hop driven. The second one is more versatile in my opinion and can fit with R&B, Pop, & Rap. 👌🏾

i chose Laura Oliveira as a name, as it's my real first name and the last name represents my brazilian roots.
i feel like it is hard to pronounce in german (even though my friends etc. told me i'm just overthinking and no one ever criticized it online).
but i still feel forced to change it.
also, even the english pronounciation sounds weird.
but i already have set up my spotify artist page and my release is on it's way.
i don't wanna change it all now without a proper alternative.
what do you think about it?

What if you battle rap..and no longer battle rap...battle rap fans don't really convert over to other media and genres even music..? And the community is a tad toxic..

+Sobernetic Scout fans do translate well depending on the artist. it really depends on if your music is similar to your battle rap style. fans want to hear good music! 🔥
