Avoid these mistakes when making an end grain cutting board

- In this video I make my first engrain cutting board, unfortunately I made some mistakes, the chopping board still looks ok but certainly not something I would sell. I explain those mistakes (What I think they were) so you don't do the same thing when making a cutting board.

What helps me with cutting board glue-ups is to use an edge (not top/bottom) caul that runs the entire length of the board on both sides for clamping. That way all of your clamps are connected and pushing evenly on the same two surfaces.
You had some clamps directly on the board and some claps with protective pieces, so it would be very difficult to apply equal pressure, because they are not working in unison.

Hello. Get yourself flattening router bit, best one is with exchangable blades. Then make easy router jig. Instead of several hours sanding, you can have it flattened in 5 minutes using router and completely sanded in another 10.
I build one after this video was release. it makes a big difference and allows me to flatten larger boards :)

Really nice looking board! One way to achieve straight lines is to change up the process. By that I mean - if you make end grain sections for each species first and then rip your strips and then lastly glue up all the premade endgrain strips - then you’ll have perfectly straight lines. Kindof hard to explain but hopefully you get the idea.

I make endgrain blocks of each colour to make boards with stripes. Then slice and glue them into the final pattern
That's a beautiful board. I made a similar board and I couldn't get the strips to line up good and it came out looking like a wave. Every cutting board is unique and a learning lesson. And its one of my favorite cutting boards too!

In your first glue up, change the pattern so one side from center is different from the other side and not a mirror image. Then after you cut them for the second glue up, turn every other piece end for end. That way you break up the straight line pattern and if it’s off a bit, it’s not so noticeable. I like the pattern you came up with, but maybe leave that for an face or edge grain board.

@@hazelnutwoodcraft It makes it a little more forgiving when trying to line up all the pieces too. And if you want the sides all one species when done put the same on each side in the first glue up or they will be an alternating pattern, which can look good too.
When making end grain boards, I either have a sacrificial piece of wood on the end and then put it through the thicknesser, or run it through the drum sander, both work well and don't take long. As their is no such thing as perfect, all mistakes are intentional and unique, but then I give all my boards away as gifts.....i'm retired, it's my non paying hobby. Cheers
I will try attaching a sacrificial piece to the end next time. would love a drum sander, not sure when I will get one yet.

Hello Salvador, the woods used were Maple, Wenge, Paduk, American walnut
So how do you decide which family member to give this to? After admitting you made such horrible mistakes you couldn't possibly sell it, but decide give it to someone in the family, you better hope they don't follow your channel. That will be a fairly awkward holiday.
Personally, I'd either keep it to use myself, or actually sell it as a prototype pattern, at a discount. Then there are no expectations of perfection. (or hurt feelings)
I would never sell one which looks awful to me or give it away.
That cutting board looks good. What router bit did you use to make the finger groove?
Now that you have got some suggestions can you please redo with the correct method.
They say we’re our own worst critics, and for the most part I would say that’s true, but you’re a bit to hard on yourself, I think it still came out great.

Very nice looking cutting board. Just curious, i always have wondered why is this called an end grain cutting board when the surface of the board is using edge grain?
Hey James. Good question. Basically wood has 3 sides. Face grain, edge grain and end grain. Face and edge grain follows the grain. Where end is….we’ll end grain. Hence when you turn the pieces up you are showing the end grain not the face or edge grain. Hope that makes sense
@Hazelnut Woodcraft thanks for that answer. My thoughts were the end grain was on the end of the strips, and when you turn them sideways you are looking at the edge grain. Thanks for answering my question. It is time for me to make one of those critters. Thanks again.

Am starting up doing this live edge tables servin boards and chopping boards up in Dumfries Scotland but a struggle get the exotics as it were? 🏴👍ps belt sander might help u with the initial sand a picked up one the cheap one from Aldi/lidal they actually work really well. 👌

Honestly yea there great think a paid 30 quid for mine comes with clamps to make it an upturned one aswell been great. Thanks I'll need check out the company see what crack is
