    Your segment on large format sheet film brought back a lot of memories. Back in the 50's we referred to that size of film as "quarter plate", a plate being 8"X10". The one thing the salesman from Ffordes didn't mention was that the little notch on the sheet film was a guide to determine, in the darkroom, which was the emulsion side of the film. The idea was to put the notched part of the sheet film in the bottom left hand corner of the film holder, thereby guaranteeing that the emulsion side was facing the lens (light).

    • @PhotographyOnline
      @PhotographyOnline  3 роки тому

      Hi Ken. Thanks for taking the time to comment. The salesman did actually explain all about the notch but this part (as well as lots of others) were exited out as we didn’t have 30 minutes for the feature so we could only keep the core parts of the chat. Hope it bought back some memories for you. Thanks for watching.

    Hope to see Ben become a regular part of the team; I'm always blown away when I see someone so young with that confidence on camera. If I could make one point regarding Harry's micro 4/3's slot... The crop factor applies to the aperture too, so an F4 lens is actually an F8 lens. I shot Olympus for years before moving to full frame. Great cameras for weight saving due to aforementioned point, not great in low light. Also, why anyone would choose the EM1X in regard to a feature on weight saving, when the EM1 MK2 or 3 will give the same image quality at significantly less weight.

    • @PhotographyOnline
      @PhotographyOnline  3 роки тому

      Hi Joe. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. We will be using Ben again, so don’t worry. Harry used the EM1X because we were making comparisons to the Canon 1DX III and the Nikon D5, so it was the closest contender. With regards to the f/4 aperture being f/8 - it depends in what context. In terms of exposure, then it is still f/4, but in terms of depth of field then yes it is the equivalent of f/8 when compared to a FF lens of the same magnification. What do you shoot now? Thanks for your continued support. All the best.

I am not intending to start a controversy; however, the 4x5 also has an optical viewfinder, and I am sure has better image quality than the digital cameras. Very interesting & informative...well over informative in Harry's case! Each to their own...for wildlife photography I can definitely see if an EVF has any lag it would be an issue but personally as someone who has to wear glasses for reading I've found an EVF where I can se the histogram and exposure simulation quite liberating. I hate having to keep getting my glasses out. I hope Canon will do a mirrorless version of the 5Ds without the filter. The mountain photography info was very useful and deserving of more in depth follow-ups for those of us who don't want to scale Everest but the normal UK heights e.g. crampons, contents of the first aid kit, GPS? Keep up the good work.

    Hello Team, I am fortunate ( I Do Believe ) to have purchased a Canon R5 Mirrorless camera and RF lenses. Having owned the 5D3 before. However, this upgrade has been a bit of a difficulty to me, can you explain to me how you got the 2-second timer for this has been an elusive thing to me???

    • @PhotographyOnline
      @PhotographyOnline  3 роки тому

      Hi Allan. This is Marcus and I don't have the R5 to hand, but I do have the R6 in front of me which is pretty much the same in terms of operation. There are a couple of ways you can activate the 2 second timer. The first is via the Quick menu - just press the Q button to the right of the screen or the Q icon in the top right and you will see all the options appear. The shooting mode will be the second option down the left side of the sceen. The other way to custom assign one of the programable buttons to become the shooting mode. This is my prefered method. For example, I have programmed my star button (top right of the back of the camera) to activate the shooting mode. That way I can always select this very quickly with just one button press - no need to faff around in menus. I hope this helps.

    I'm amazed that Marcus is touting the 5dsr against modern high resolution cameras. The sensors in the Nikon z7 and Sony a7riv blow the 5dsr away (I know, I owned both). The 5dsr has very limited dynamic range.

    I did enjoy this part months part 1 as I use a Lumix and Olympus MFT equipment due to weight. But was disappointed that both Olympus and Panasonic now offer high-resolution shooting modes in their top-of-the-line cameras. I feel this could be tested at the same time as the Canon cameras. In 'Handheld' High Res Shot mode, the E-M1 Mark III and E-M1X capture 16 images in quick succession, and combine them to create a 50MP file. The cameras' powerful inbuilt stabilization system is employed to reduce the risk of shake.

    Have shot 4x5 for awhile now and I can honestly say the guy at the camera shop left out several very important items about just loading the film. Pretty poor segment for those that have never used LF before. I understand that there are limitations in time and such for your program but hopefully you will cover this in better detail in the future.

      Hi Sophie. Thanks for taking the time to comment. The interview with the salesman in the shop lasted for 27 minutes, but we needed to edit this down to around 7 minutes, so obviously we had to cut lots of info out. Thus wasn’t meant to be a large format guide but to simply give people an understanding of what is involved. In part 2 we show a little more, but even this doesn’t have time to become a guide. We will be covering more features on LF over the coming months though, so we’ll try to address a variety of areas between all of them. Thanks for watching.

      Hi Rick. Yes there is a reason we haven’t featured any Sony cameras - Sony are not interested in loaning us any gear. We are working on it though, but when a company doesn’t want to promote their gear, it’s easier to go with other brands who do want to promote their gear. Hope that makes sense.

    @briangc1972 3 роки тому

    @14:06 he incorrectly states that a crop sensor gives you more reach from your lens. That is 100% wrong. The crop sensor yields a smaller image, not an increase in focal length. What he said adds confusion to a subject that most people don't fully understand. fStoppers.com has some excellent articles explaining the differences between sensor sizes and how sensor size affects what you see and what you get.

    • @PhotographyOnline
      @PhotographyOnline  3 роки тому

      Hi Brian. What Harry says is actually true. As you correctly say, a crop sensor records a smaller image, but this means the lens has an increased perceived reach, as you will only need a 300mm to achieve the same shot as a 600mm on a full frame. We did a whole feature about sensor sizes in last month’s show, so you may be interested in this. Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment.

    • @briangc1972
      @briangc1972 3 роки тому

      @@PhotographyOnline It is not an increase in magnification. That is what confuses most people. The crop sensor with a 300mm has the same magnification as a 300mm on a Full Frame. What people fail to realize and discuss is the change of composition and compression of the image.
