Great in one word, nice to see that salt, I think that's special, I don't know that and have never experienced it like this here in the Netherlands.

Thanks Martijn! That salt formations in Death Valley are quite interesting. Much of the valley floor is significantly below sea level, so all the naturally occurring salt in the eroding mountains finds its way to the valley floor. That salt in this area isn't especially thick, but in some areas it forms a crust several feet thick. It's truly fascinating. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Beautiful images. I kept imagining you, Sean Connery, and Harrison Ford riding horses through the canyon with the spectacular light, very "Indiana Jones". Nice tip on the blinking red light on the truck.

Ben, another excellent outing shared here from DVNP. The overhanging mudslide or boulder at about 1:05 was sure precarious. Especially seeing the elongated crack at the mounting structure of the overhang......😱
Both the images were excellent scenes. The area around Badwater was the best of the two images IMO and works best for me overall. The composition was well thought out and executed. I had real trepidation with the extreme cloud cover being a bummer, but the final Provia transparency shared wonderful light in the end.....😎👍
Thanks Paul! I was curious how that overhanging boulder fared during the massive summer flashfloods in DV. Thankfully it looked the same as before, but if that boulder or several other tumbled, it would cut off access to this canyon. The blue sky to the east that evening gave me hope that the clouds were localized over the Panamints and that the sun would find a way under them, but it's never a sure thing. I'm just glad everything worked out, and not only was I able to use a 1 second shutter (which I know you will understand the significance of), but also I didn't have to use a grad filter, and the combination of those two things made for a very calm and peaceful evening. Thanks Tyler! I sure lucked out with the light and the conditions that day. It's also incredibly rare to have the meter tell me to use a 1 second shutter speed which I don't need to time with a stopwatch, and also that a grad ND filter wasn't necessary. The canyon shot is gorgeous. It’s like the hallway in Willy Wonka, it doesn’t look THAT long or far but as you walk away, the perspective is so wild how small you are and how tall those walls are.
It sure was a wonderful canyon, and the scale of that place sure makes it even more special. When I visited that canyon one year prior, it was a windy day and small bits of rock rained down from above. It was a bit unsettling, so I'm glad it was calm this time.

Love that one in the canyon. Awesome reflected light and gives me some good motivation to google satellite recon before heading out to photograph
Thanks Brian! I highly recommend spending some time studying the satellite imagery. I usually find 5 or 6 areas I want to explore, then I write those areas in my notebook to remind me while I'm in the field. What looks like a wall of mountains has a plethora of amazing canyons that people seldom visit, and you'll only know about them by seeing them from above on satellite imagery.
I've done the same thing in Death Valley, leave a lightstick on the side of the car towards where I was walking. Beautiful canyon image.

Those are the days that put a spring in our step and I was so hoping you'd make an image of that canyon! It says a lot to me about light, about anticipation, about things hoped for. The evening image by the river is full of repeating shapes and serene colour contrasts - I'd be really chuffed to have made it myself.

I enjoyed both images that are classic Ben Horne. The light in the canyon was perfect. I will never complain about how long it takes to setup my gear anymore, not after watching you setup! The light trick on the truck is a good one, we did that last year when we would wander way off the road, it is a great way to find your way back in the dark, because everything looks the same!

Superb shot of the canyon. I never know how to frame those or crop them. You nailed it!
Thanks! That's where the viewing frame I use really comes in handy. It allows you to see how things balance before pulling out the camera. In this case, it was useful for figuring out how much of the right versus left wall to include and also for the foreground alignment.
A great way to start the day, a mellow trip through your eyes of Death Valley. I admire your patience and thoroughness to wait for the right moment. The results speak for themself. Keep creating these magical moments!

Thanks Michael! I honestly haven't really looked at the B&W work yet, but I plan on doing that in a couple months after I'm back from my spring trip and I have some down time to work with them.
The light in both images are spectacular. The warmth in the canyon images. The colors popping in the mountain-puddle scene. Love the beacon light to navigate your way back to your car; just the way early aviators navigated at night with wayside beacons. Thanks for sharing, Ben.

Great shots, Ben. I love both compositions, and the light was epic. I was wondering what you were doing with the rack on your truck. I had not considered using a headlamp in pulse mode to mark your vehicle. Thank you for sharing. Peace and Safe Travels.
Thanks Craig! It's the small things like putting a blinking headlamp on the side of my vehicle that make things so much easier getting back. I remember one time I was taking a photo up at Racetrack and heading back to my truck well after sunset. There wasn't a moon, so it was super dark. I was relying on my GPS to find my way back to my truck, but it kept falling out of calibration and was sending me the wrong direction. Eventually I figured it out.

Thanks Andrew! There's something about the vast scale of Death Valley that's fun to show with the grand landscapes. Those photos are sometimes more stressful to take, but thankfully everything worked out well this time (no grad filter necessary), and it was a calm and contemplative experience.
Absolutely gorgeous shots and entertaining narration. Actually the excellent soundtrack paints a vivid audio image all of its own.
Thanks! That's one of the things I love about producing these videos, working with the natural sounds to give a sense of being there. But hey, some blaring dubstep music and a bunch of jump cuts would certainly get me to a million subscribers faster. ;-)

Beautiful shots, Ben! The canyon one is my favorite. The light is gorgeous and the framing is really spot on! There are times when compositions that appear to be straightforward are actually more challenging. A couple of inches up or down or left or right makes a huge difference in the balance of the elements. You did a fantastic job 🔥😀

Thanks!! I really lucked out with the light that evening. The light was rather flat for the blue hour, probably because the clouds obstructed much of the glow on the western horizon. I enjoy exposing several sheets of film as the light changes though because you never really know until you see them side by side. Thanks as always for watching and commenting!

It's strange how that just becomes the norm when visiting a place like Death Valley where so much of the valley floor is covered in salt, yet it must seem very exotic for people who haven't visited Death Valley before. Do you recall if you were using any tilt on the salt creek photo, shot at f/9 with the 240mm? Both this image and the canyon are stellar.
Hi Ed! I did indeed need to use quite a bit of front tilt on that one. I tilted the front standard so that the foreground water was in focus (the salt at my feet was out of focus), all the way to just shy of the top of the mountains. By the time I stopped down to f/45, that plane of focus expands into a wedge and covers nearly everything. The extreme foreground with the salty crust and the very tops of the mountains are not tack sharp, but that was the sacrifice in order to get as much of the rest of the scene in focus. And for the canyon photo, I didn't use any movements. I just focused on the wonderful glow on that right wall and stopped down to f/45. The extreme foreground is not in focus, but everything else is.
Very beautiful pictures! At 14:54 it looks like a set from a science fiction film. Desert planet...

That Canyon glow was amazing. From video initially i thought that direct light might be too harsh then also you were more towards left so that direct light does not comes in the composition. Fantastic.
Thanks Rakesh! When visiting that canyon the day before, I figured out exactly where I would need to position my camera so the bright wall on the left was hidden. I then placed a rock at that position. When I returned well ahead of the light the following day, I used that rock as a guide. A glow like that would be difficult to photograph on 8x10 in a time-sensitive situation since the light moves quickly, so I'm glad I knew where to stand and when. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Another GREAT day in the "office"! I was wondering if you have ever explored the Owlshead Mountains? The granite outcrops have some interesting erosion. I hope to do some recon on my next trip to DV.

Thanks Rick! Yup, I found that area on the satellite maps one year earlier, hiked out to it on last year's trip, then made a point of returning with my camera this year when the conditions were right.
The slot canyon is a great shot, would you mind telling what trail or canyon that is ? Thanks
Thanks Rick! When it comes to locations, I'm careful not to reveal where I am because it can have a negative impact on the locations. When specific locations are shared online, there is a tendency for people to flock to those locations which can have a negative impact on the location resulting in erosion and vandalism. It also robs other people of having the same experience I did by having the canyon in solitude. It wouldn't be the same experience if the canyon was swarming with other people. And also, this canyon is honestly quite sketchy with all sorts of scrambles over boulders. When I visited last year, strong wind resulted in small rocks raining down from above. With all that being said, Death Valley is filled with amazing canyons all over the place. If you spend time studying satellite imagery, you'll find all sorts of fun places to visit, and when people put in that amount of effort and find somewhere special, I hope you hold that location close to your chest so it isn't spoiled by the general public that has a tendency to ruin things.
Great video and imagery. Do you think it is wise to stock up with fuji provia velvia films until they are available. As I seen some news recently there will be a shortage due to material shortage in the fuji factory. the price will skyrocket soon.
I would definitely make sure you have enough on hand to carry you though some lean times ahead. Last year there was about a 6 month window when Provia was difficult to find in stock. whats the name of that blinking light that you used for finding your car?
I used my Petzl headlamp and just fastened it to one of the crossbars on my roof rack. Most headlamps will have a red mode, and many will have a blinking red mode, so that's what I put it in. Even though I was out there for hours, it had almost no impact on the amount of battery life remaining. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Ben, can I encourage you to keep your content clickbait-free, but consider giving up on ad-free. The main reason is that UA-cam's algorithm reduces the circulation of videos that don't allow ads, and your excellent work deserves more air, more eyes. I don't mind watching an ad at the beginning (or end) if it means there's be more Ben Horne out there, balancing the ...... non-Ben Horne types.

When it comes to ads, I honestly don't think they pay enough to make it worth the hassle *unless* one is willing to go down the clickbait route where you try and attract a lot of attention. As a test, I put out a video a few years ago with ads enabled and no clickbait. I was curious if UA-cam would recommend that video more than the others, and honestly it didn't seem to make a difference. If I use the metrics from that video and apply it to all of my other videos, I couldn't afford to do this for a living. It's the clickbait titles and thumbnails that the youtube algorithm embraces, and when combined with ads, can lead to increased ad revenue, but there are significant disadvantages to that approach. Sure, it attracts a larger audience, but the *quality* of the audience drops significantly. So not only would I need to push out videos that feel like a betrayal to myself, the response I would get would be unsettling at best. That was my experience with ads in the past. Viewer supported content attracts a higher quality audience that's more invested in the outcome, and it fosters slow and steady long term growth that's more sustainable. I can do what I'm doing now for decades without burning out, and I'm not sure the same can be said for those chasing ad revenue where the rules and trends are always changing.
