Dr Choi is 100% in the right here. He gave the patient adequate care, tried to understand why the nurses were upset, showed empathy to Hank, and tried to find if his colleague did something reprehensible so he could help her not lose her job, all the while never understating what the patient did. Class act

As medical professionals - we take an oath to treat anyone no matter what kind of human they are: bad, good, or evil. It can be hard sometimes, but that is what makes medicine so beautiful - we don't care who you are, one must not be afraid of their doctor

What honestly stood out to me was Hank, when children are assaulted like that, they grow up to become adults, but the trauma is still there a lot of times...You never know who could be suffering inside or have trauma
And the man who did it doesn't even think about them when they grow up and how it could possibly affect them

Getting upset at the patient is understandable. Giving your nursing duties poorly is, while unprofessional and unethical, is understandable, What I don’t understand is why they wouldn’t tell Dr Choi about it?
Confidentiality. Hank told the other nurses about what had been done to him and they couldn't tell anyone else because he confided in them.

@@snakebitepellehue I believe that's private, sure, and if it doesn't change anything, sure they can stay quiet and keep the confidentiality. but it dramatically changes the nurse's treatment (or lack thereof) to him, they should tell their supervisor and maybe ask to transfer the patient?
It's so freaking aggravating and irritating when people do not tell you anything when something wrong is going on and try to dismiss your questions. I was feeling stress and annoyance watching this even though I already knew what the issue was.
People don't owe you personal matters that were told in private. Maybe that guy didn't want this asian dude to know. Maybe he doesn't want the whole hospital to know he was molested as a child...

They owe that dude the confidentiality they most likely promised him or was assumed when they talked privately.
But by not doing their job, and keeping information that was hindering them from doing that job and being professionals... then confidentiality should be compromised so that they can deal with the issue at hand.
Of course, that dude, the victim doesn't deserve that. But the nurses should have thought about that before they let their personal feelings stop them from treating a patient. No matter how vile he is...

As a student nurse, I totally appreciate how hard the situation is. It would 100% be a struggle to care for a patient who’s done horrible things. However, it’s our duty to maintain quality of care to all patients, no matter our personal feelings.

I think every nurse and doctor should have the legal rights to refuse to treat someone like that

Like for example, if I was nursing someone who has sexual assault charges against them, and then proceeded to say stuff towards me that made me feel uncomfortable then I would have the right to refuse to treat them and someone else can. However, I can’t really just flat out refuse to treat someone due to their past actions because we’re there to nurse, not judge. Despite our personal feelings. We don’t have to be their friend, or even interact with them outside of medical necessity. That being said, I work in mental health so it might be different for general nurses. I also work in the UK.

If healthcare worker is allowed to refused to treat their patient based on their belief or feeling, then it would be a mess.
My aunt works in the medical field, she had a patient who was a child molester. She said everytime she went to look after him, she wanted to throw up. She couldn’t stand working with him. But she also said that she couldn’t not work with him. It doesn’t matter what your opinions are when you’re in the medical profession, specially about individuals backgrounds or themselves, you cannot deny someone health care as you’ve taken the oath to provide health care to all.
How did she know? I'm not doubting your story, I'm just curious about how she found this out.

I work security, but having a guy on the grund underneath you after you caught him smacking his girl around in public, the level of self-control needed to not pummel his face into a mush is almost godly. My heart goes out to that nurse it must be horrible. While I understand the feelings of the nurses to not wanting to be in his presence and giving him the minimum, when the nurse stabbed him a few times before she drew the blood, that was over the edge. Still why did they not tell Dr. Choi? Also it´s awful they never got a conviction or even statement out of him. His victims will never get true justice

Medical ethics state that one should never treat someone they know (that situation is included, obviously) but it also states you shall never do harm. It is our first principle and we take an oath to treat anybody, no matter what they (could have) done. Surely, no one should go through something so horrifying and in normal life I would just spit in this monster face, but when you put on your coat - please forget all your feelings

This is the reason for which doctors and nurses should NEVER harrass patients, whoever they are. Because if a nurse or doctor expresses contempt toward a patient who then dies, it will rise suspicion. I'm not saying that the world is not a better place without a patient like this, but it would also be a worse place if the doctor or nurse went to jail for homicide or, at the very least, lost their medical license.

Obviously the guy is a monster, but extremely unprofessional from all the nurses here, especially April and Doris. Then not filling Doctor Choi in on anything, extremely poor.
I think it's more of a privacy thing. It's not their call to tell him.
@@davab. It might not be their call to tell him the specifics or of their friend's personal details, but this was affecting their work and duty of care. It was also affecting the guy's ability to do his job, making him look insubordinate and bad at his job. what if he got fired/ reprimanded because he couldn't do a simple job and his superior didn't know why?
Then for none of the other nurses to treat him, and not let Choi know- what they did was highly unprofessional and could have resulted in any of them facing a malpractice suit and possible prison time for wrongful death.

It's understandable since Ethan wanted to "treat him as any other patient" when no half-sane person would want to treat and put a chomo back on the street (let alone be in the same room as one). Whether or not he's a former offender is irrelevant.. If he offended once, that's all that matters. Deny him any right like he denied innocence from the children he's hurt.
@@EPrimeify They don't get to pick and chose who to treat. it isn't their call. this time they don't treat a guy, but what happens if next time they chose not to treat someone that person turned out to be innocent and these people let them die? you start setting precedents like that and it escalates. then no one would get treated because well hey your doctor might suspect you of a crime and decide you're not worth treating

Everyone saying "as a med/nurse student ... " I get you all, but as an abused child i can tell you I wished his death more times than i can count and if he was dying before me i don't think I would be able to help.
Then in this situation you get transferred of the case, not your call to make if they get help or not. Although I do feel for you and your situation

This reminds me of a patient we had while i was an intern. The guy had raped at least two women and killed one, I think, I don't remember exactly but it was horrifying to think about. I didn't know it at the time. I would go in, smile, talk to him like any other patient, ask him if he's alright, draw blood etc. But the attendings found out and through them we found out he had a horrible past but they wouldn't tell us and instructed us not to google his name to find out while he was in our care, but just to be careful around him, and they said he was in jail for over 30 years, so that obviously gave us an idea of how bad the charges were. When he was discharged, of course we read the articles and honestly, I was happy I didn't find out earlier.

@@GameOn71213 the problem is when you take an oath to be a nurse or a doctor or any profession that correlates to health care you are taking an oath that no matter what they did or who you will provide the best medical care for them that is their job and no matter how difficult it is it’s what you signed up for I know it’s what I’m signing up for when I am a fully qualified physio and if you can’t uphold that oath then you have no business being in the health care industry healthcare is a basic human right no matter who you are

Right! And to add on, in an event he did die in the hospital, it is likely that the police and the mortician can find out he died relating to malicious intent from the staff. It can cause the hospital to be sued, shut down and people are gonna lose their jobs, because some healthcare staff can't put aside their personal feelings to a patient.

There is an ethical obligation for those giving care to others. No matter your personal feelings. If you cannot give proper care, you should not be in a position where you are obligated to do so. Whilst a story, there's no justification for these nurses' behaviour. They are not "judge, jury & executioner".
True but also consider, dr Choi specifically asked the nurses that obviously had a problem, Doris to draw blood, and he pressured Monique to get the information he wanted, not saying it’s not messes up, but it’s not just them in the wrong I think

He pressured monique to try and understand what was going on but still he should have written them up for their behaviour. Especially Doris who was hurting him on purpose

And then the next person should let you die because you let him die (and became a monster because of that who has a life on their conscience) and the cycle would continue forever? Nurses do have the obligation to care for others, even the worst monsters. It's the job of law enforcement to find ways of giving them punishments (although as shown in this episode, that unforunately isn't always working).
I would tell him: 'Look, we all know who you are and what you did and are doing. Don't expect me to be nice or to look at you like a human being but I will do my job, which is more than some of my colleagues would do, so consider yourself lucky. I am giving you more empathy than you gave your victims'. And would try to ensure there is some investigation going and all possible avenues of getting the justice. But don't self-vigilante: sometimes what people say might not be true and you might end up taking an innocent life...and if you are a religious person, you know you would be burning forever for doing that.
@@staszewaM I would suggest you don't say that. That implies that your "other colleagues" could be dangerous and could land you or them in serious trouble if people overhear. You either continue to do your job and pretend you didn't know and show good bedside manners. Or you tell your head doc and ask him to transfer him to a different unit so you're no longer obligated to care for him.

Dr choi is right. They do have to treat him like they would any other patient. And theyre only treating him this way because they knownwhat he did. Other patients could have come in having done the exact same thing and not known. Theyve treated killers and not had this big of an issue.
April really pisses me off when people simply ask her stuff. It looked incredibly sus that she was im the room before he coded and she was acting very strange. Dr choi had a right to ask her.

I have some pity for people that were molested/told to do strange things at a young age themselves who went on to be molesters, and I don't count them with people that weren't in those situations, but there's never a right reason to molest.

If something happened to their patients, it'll be reviewed and reported to the higher ups, and they'll either get suspended or get their license revoked.

As a health professional this clip actually angered me because it's not up to us who we treat. Even if it's the H guy with the mustache, you have to treat them no matter how monstrous that person is. Not only does it violate our professional code, it breaks the principle of due process. And not filling in the resident doctor on the information? that's just crossing the line.

They didn't fill in the resident doctor in the information because a colleague told them in confidence that he'd been r@ped. The doctor doesn't need to know that information. I agree that they should have treated the patient professionally, regardless of who he is, but I don't agree that they needed to share something so incredibly personal. Or is it a hospital policy that everybody needs to know everyone else's business? If someone contracts an STD from a one night stand for example, do they need to inform the doctor in charge? Or if they fail their driving test? Or if their cousin got a divorce? None of those things should be affecting how they treat their patients, and none of them need to be told to colleagues if they don't want.

But if that information is causing the nurses to commit medical malpractice and do something that can potentially kill a patient which breaks the medical oath, I'd say that is an info that the resident doctor NEEDS to know.
Although I'm not a nurse I'm a Health Care Aide (also known as a personal care worker depending where you're from) I've had a similar experience. I worked on a locked dementia unit and we had a full blown sexual predator as a patient. He was a disgusting man. He would constantly reach out to grab you as you walked by, he would comment on your body "you've got a nice pair on you" and if you told him to stop he would tell you that "you liked that". He had spent alot of time in jail for molesting and I truly hope he rots in hell.
It's not the point of the video but the first nurse, the one who faced his abuser must be really hurt, after all those years seeing him again, like nothing I glad they let him go home and not treat him again.

Yes, but it's not entirely Ethan's fault. Considering April's hostility and refusal of treatment towards the patient and the additional amps in the trash can. It was a possibility.

@@uughhgh7866 Which is why I don't agree with her actions. I can understand why she did it, but it is definitely out of line and she should probably be reassigned to another patient since her interests are conflicting with her ability to take care of the patient.
I love how all the nurses went straight after him to see what's happening.
They do realise that each and every one of them can be hit with malpractice especially the nurse that kept jabbing his arm purposely to cause harm/pain to him along with the nurse and doctor who just stood there and let him die.

Very difficult situation. Dr Choi is right - they have to treat him like any other patient but it must be the worst situation to be in as a medical professional. There would have to be a full review if that patient then died in the care of medical professionals who had expressed concern over working on his case. It wouldn’t be kept ‘off the books’ like this. This is honestly nerve-wracking to watch.
This was unprofessional from the nurses, you can’t deny a patient the help that they need to get better just because of an incident that happened a long time ago, Dr Choi was the only one who treated that man like a patient and even tried to save his life

It must be difficult for the nurses...this is a dilemma.
Same as police shouldn't be there to be vigilante-style executioners murdering criminals (George Floyd had a criminal past, but got murdered while he was simply going about his day; additionally he seemed to be living a 'regular' life and integrating into society, but that's besides the point- even if he was still a criminal he should have been caught and brought to justice not killed), they are just supposed to catch them (in most cases definitely possible without using force and/or bullets) and protect public and 'serve law and order', same the nurses and medical staff should be saving lives and doing their job even while dealing with pedos, rapists, murderers and Adolf H reincarnations. In some of those situations saving the lives that will be put away in jail etc, but still- if someone has murderous aspirations, they shouldn't go to hospitals and police force.

No. Not in the hospital. All this information is taken by one nurse, which the information spread to others. There could be an event where this nurse could have mistaken him for someone else. The man could have been innocent!

The patient is disgusting. However, it's not the nurses place to refuse medical care. What they did was incredibly unprofessional and opened up the hospital and themselves to lawsuits. You keep your personal prejudices at the door, it's one of the few benchmarks of being professional healthcare providers.

You think psychiatrists and researchers would be able to do their jobs driven by hate? There's a certain level of decorum to maintain objectivity. It's what the law, ideally tries to promote. I understand perfectly ETHICAL obligation, and you should not mix your personal feelings. BUT humans arent robots. SOme can empathize more, some wouldn't be able to follow the rules like a robot if they survived what this man does.
I agree with you. But if you cant do your job, then you need to tell someone so that someone else can do it for you/help you.
Because people aren't robots, it's okay to get help if you find yourself unable/unwilling to do certain things. But if you fail at asking for help when you can't do something, then you probably aren't fit for the job and need to reevaluate how you go about it. This is very prevalent when that job has anything to do with helping/tacking care/affects other people.
Those nurses were deliberately hurting and neglecting that man. No matter how awful he is, they have taken an oath to help and save as many as they can, no matter who they are. It's their job. And if aiding is to request someone else to do it because you cant, than that is just as important. And the nurses failed at that as well...

I see nothing wrong with this. I was raped at 8 years old, I can tell you that it was so incredibly painful, I was left with bruises along my thighs, hips, vulva, my cervix was hit multiple times, I was bleeding and crying, I could barely crawl, let alone walk and stand. He should be happy all that happened to him was being poked with a needle
As a victim you can think whatever you want, but when you are medical staff like me, you take an oath and you will treat everybody equally.
I was victim of child abuse, i will still treat one to the best of my ability. I would treat a man or woman who abused my own children if necessary or i would ask this patient to be under another doctor's care or moved to another facility. But i would NEVER hurt that person or use my position to make him suffer in any way.
I don't know how old you are and when this happened to you, but you need to see a professional and start dealing with it. People like you, regardless how how traumatic the situations they went through, if untreated psychologically, represent a danger to society and to themselves.
Seek help. For your own sake.

Well it's actually a very fascinating thing. He says they should use the ethical code, help everyone. You can't judge whether someone is good or bad, regarding the treatment. Choi was angry they were experiencing a dilemma, or even refusing. Then in the end, he wasn't simply asking a question. He experienced the ethical code of "innocent until proven guilty". So both dilemma's. They both ended up doing the right thing, but with a lot of contemplation.

(I'm a nurse) everyone is pointing out how the nurses have been unprofessional but nobody is pointing out how unprofessional it was that even when given the explanation the doctor still wanted (and forced) an autopsy and even kept it hidden from everyone. Going behind your equipe's back and risking their jobs just because you don't believe them is extremely unprofessional. Everyone was unprofessional in this clip. Even the interning doctor, those chest compressions were useless.
I'm definitely not a doctor or a nurse, but I heard that proper chest compressions could crack ribs. So maybe that's why they held back on doing them properly?

@@TheAndreacardamone That's the point, though. He's an actor, not a dying man. There's no good reason to risk cracking his ribs. Also, the nurse can't very well get angry with him for suspecting her after the way they behaved. If he'd had a condition that was time sensitive, their neglect could very well have killed him. A man like that might not deserve to live and certainly deserves to be punished, but nurses, doctors, police officers--they aren't judges and shouldn't be. You can't blame him for being suspicious.

It’s not defending its calling out the unprofessionalism the nurses were showing, regardless of your personal feelings you have a duty and you took an oath to do no harm and this kind of behavior could lead them to their licenses being taken away.
It’s a terrible situation to be in but ain’t nobody winning either way. Be terrible to your patient and then if the higher ups find out, you loose your job and get sued.
To add on to the above reply, this is a *suspected* CM. I cannot deny that the student nurse was indeed raped, but it is possible that this patient may be a lookalike, also known as innocent.

Doctors and nurses have no right to choose what side of justice you are on. Doctors take an oath to help anyone and everyone no matter what they did. That’s the job. It comes with the job, it’s sad and frustrating but that’s what it is.
I would have written up April. It’s so unprofessional of her and especially that she didn’t even want to answer dr. Choi. I think she is forgetting her place as well that he is the doctor and she is the nurse
I love that, despite being a series focused on drama rather than medical procedures, they did the resuscitation protocol well, for the most part. They didn't defibrillate the asystole, they started compressions immediately and applied 1 mg of epinephrine after the second defibrillation. It's understandable that sometimes there is not a good quality of compressions in the scene and that they don't show the complete protocol because it is a TV serie, but I really liked how they approached that situation.
As a doctor or nurse you have a duty of care to any patient. That being said, you'd have to be made of stone not to understand April's and the other nurses' reaction and conduct towards this awful man. Its so beautiful how the minute they see Hank in distress, they rally around him.

A lot of people in the comments saying that the way the nurses acted was unprofessional and unethical. While that is true, he had it coming. The way way the patient acted while children were in HIS CARE AND SUPERVISION was unethical and unprofessional and border line criminal. Child molesters deserve no sympathy and/or care. Neither of their victims did.
While personally I would agree, medical staff cannot bring their own opinions into someone’s care. Dr Choi was right when he said that he had to be treated like any other patient if for no other reason than he could sue for malpractice.
Under hippocratic oath, regardless if the person is a criminal or not, they need to treat the patient fairly

Because it's not the nurse's or doctor's job to decide who deserves to be saved or not. They shall treat everyone fairly. Don't need to treat him with a smile, but neglecting or hurting a patient should not be an option.
Of course, I'm not complaining that the child molester died. But a doctor cant just decides to not save someone, same with nurses. If it gets too personal, or you are simply unable, then you should ask for someone else to take over that patient. Not get mad at the doctor or higher-ups when they ask you to do the job you are not doing.

You will see a lot of bad people in the hospital and if you can’t deal with it you shouldn’t be in healthcare. You will see murderers, nazis, molesters, and more. It’s your job to help people. If u give doctors the power to deny patients it opens the door for all kinds of things. Like not helping the obese or smokers because of their health choices. Or refusing a diabetic insulin because they consumed sugar.

I'm a paramedic and once was called to a car accident. A guy had hit a tree. Fire brigade, emergency doctor, ambulance and helicopter dispatched and got him out and to a hospital. An hour later we all learned that he had been on the run after having driven into a crowd of three people just half an hour previous to our call (his ex wife, child and a neighbor), injuring all of them. It was speculated, whether hitting the tree was a suicide attempt. We all had a moment of reflection upon learning that. Ultimately, I'm glad that I usually don't know, what the people I help have done up to that point. I'm also glad that I don't have to treat them for weeks or months, just until they get into the hospital. I'm lucky to be able to help everyone without having to reflect on whether or not they deserve it.
That was so unprofessional. He's a horrible person but that doesn't give you the right to treat him horribly in a hospital. Sure you don't have to be nice and smile but going out of your way to hurt him isn't mature at all

It’s the law. Hospitals are legally obligated to give medical help to anyone who needs it no matter what they do. After the patient is cured, then they can them to law enforcement and they deal with it

I had surgery and the surgeon messed up and put me in intensive care for 2 weeks and he suddenly came to my place of work and I walked round the corner and nearly walked into him. Complete court me out the blue and it was horrible

Watched a lot of medical series and this one is my 2nd favorite right behind House.
As much as there is an ethical obligation when there is a patient like this there should be particular doctors and nurses to treat them. At the end of the day health care professionals are humans and they can only be expected to handle so much onto of what they already do impromptu.
An interesting concept but I don't think it would ever work.
The particular medical care personel to deal with people like this is all of them. At the end of the day even the worst person is still a human being which warrants giving them medical care when needed. That is part of the job that one takes when going into the health care sector, there is no choosing patients or even worse, mistreating them.

Technically actual executioners are often doctors and nurses because many places require medical license for execution with stuff like lethal injection and also need someone with medical license to confirm the prisoner is dead. It's ironic though because a person can also lose their medical license for participating in execution. It's a weird controversy where government and medical community are on opposing sides, and it's why the identities of physicians who participate in executions are usually kept confidential.
