My older brother who has special needs used to be so violent towards me and my siblings that at one point my parents had to bring him to a facility to help him and get him the help and meds he needed. You would never know looking at him now as he is the most gentle loving guy. Sometimes its the only option and is better for everyone.

Sometimes the brain doesn’t function as it should. Just because the brain can’t regulate certain things properly, that does not make someone a bad person. I’m so glad your brother got the help he needed. And i know it’s fictional, but I hope this boy does too. And I hope he and his family will recover from this heartbreak.

Breaks my heart how he says "I'll be better". He loves his family and would always feel guilty for something he can not fully control. He needs this, but it still hurts like hell.

My brother was extremly violent against me and my parents did almost nothing.
They send him to therapie from time to time but it was never long enough to heal him, because "he missed us so much".
Today he is in a clinic because of alcohol and drug abuse. My parents wanted to look like a normal family so much, that they totaly destroyed our childhood.
My sister and my father don´t talk to my brother anymore, my mother is still excusing his behavior and for me: I honestly dont know what to say about it anymore.

It's so messed up that medicaid won't cover treatment unless the parents legally abandon their child. There's no guarantee they will get the child back later. And that could further mess up the child. It's such a fucked up situation.
There was another episode where the couple couldn't afford anti-rejection medication for their son. Insurance covered the operation but not the drugs. The parents were told to get divorced so the mother could apply for medicaid.

Sad but true. Though as a nurse I can tell you part of the reason he has to be given up is because insurance companies don't want to pay because his treatment is long and costly. The kind of disorder or cluster of disorders he has often lead to permanent or near permanent institutionalization. Cost tons of money for something like that and takes resources away from others. The government has more resources but kids with parents are the parents responsibility but if the parents can't pay it this is their only option. Besides whether they want to admit it to themselves or not this was going to be the decision he'd have to make. They have another child whose safety they have to think of.

More respect for parents like these, that know there's nothing to be done, outside of psychiatric long term treatment, and do whatever it takes to get him help, rather than those that see the signs, but ignore them, and the kid end up mauling or killing someone.

@@emilycooper442 i feel like Rian was saying that some parents will allow the child to get worse while "loving" them. true love includes sacrifices and if you love your child or anyone you would do anything especially if there are no alternatives. the sacrifice in this video was to leave the child so he can get better. almost like how Jesus left His glory in heaven and came on earth as a human (not even rich or anything but as a poor to average man so he can relate with us all) and to die with OUR sin even though He is pure and has never sinned. it is like you being excecuted for a murder you didn't commit. I worked in a group home, a boy there had to be legally abandoned or "surrendered" to his case worker and by proxy us so that we could better control his care. Similarly, it took a lot of convincing for his mom to do it, because she saw it as giving up on him. The reality is it's just on paper, and two years later he was able to control his anger effectively, hadn't been in an altercation, was doing better in school, slept better, appetite came back, and showered regularly (teenagers are rank bruv). Despite "abandoning" him, he got to move back in with her and guess what? They have a healthy relationship and are doing great. Also side note, just because you legally abandon someone, doesn't mean you can't still see and communicate with them, ergo it makes no real difference other than you aren't responsible for their care monetarily.

Nice to hear a hopeful story! I had friends who had to “abandon” their adopted daughter for the same reason. To my knowledge, she didn’t respond well to treatment, and never returned to them. She had a brutally traumatic past. 😢
In Finland if you abandon or surrender your child, you wouldn't be allowed custody again. Even children in foster care are still technically in the custody of their parents, and no legal choices can be made for them without parental consent.
Once you legally sever your ties to your parents, they cannot be reinstated. I was emancipated at 16, and legally my parents had no say after that. I was hospitalized due to ed and the hospital wouldn't call my parents, because legally they were not allowed to. I was 17 at the time. After I turned 18 I was allowed to add my mom as my emergency contact.
I am very lucky that me being emancipated didn't affect my relationship with my parents in the long term. My mom was just unable to take care of me at the time. I'm 32 now, and my mom has been clean for over 10 years. If I wasn't emancipated at 16, I wouldn't have a relationship with my mom today. My brother hasn't seen our mom in 13 years, and I know that it could have just as easily be me who ended up that way.

Dr. Charles is just as evil for splitting families.
This story also breaks my heart as my parents were in a similar situation when I was four years of age, and they had the courage to continue raising me as opposed to confining me to an institution.

I have struggled to enjoy it. Initially it was fine but now every staff member is either sleeping with each other or is so messed up it’s now just so boring and not enjoyable. April and Natalie are so unlikeable and ridiculous.....ED Drs and nurses don’t go all over the hospital treating patients and there is no surgery that needs to be performed in ED. Hospitals do have designated emergency theatres. This show is embarrassing and so unrealistic it’s laughable

@@idk.man_ Honestly the care in the UK for mental health really isn't better than the US. I know someone who was put into care by their mum because they had anorexia and couldn't get the care they need. It happens here too. And often your denied any therapy at all apart from 6 weeks of cbt
One of the saddest cases on the show. No one is really at fault here or doing something bad „for the right reasons“ and the solution is just as heartbreaking. I honestly don’t know who to feel more sorry for. The boy or the family.

This hit me like a bullet. I was taken into child custody after some things my mom never did that her ex did. It traumatized me. And hearing this boy say "I wanna go home" and "no please" I broke down crying because that's all I said when they took me away from my mother. After 10 years I now live with my mom happily. I still have traumas like ptsd (thanks to child custody actually they caused some traumas) and attachment issues as well as abandonment issues but now I do live with the one they should've never seperated me from. Now I vouched to myself that if I ever where to get a child I'd adopt them. And I'd adopt one that most people would see as a "demons child" why? Because no matter who they are. They still deserve someone to love them unconditionally.

Having your child taken away to get healthy or leave your child with you and just let the violence grow is very hard to choose but all they have to do is wait right? If it was the only way to have a child healthy then yes I would do anything even if it means they grow up without the love from their actual parent or a guardian. And even if it means we will be called abandoners. As long as the child is well that is all.

No actually in this instance no one calls them abandoned as long as They are still there for him. They just don't have the right to decide for him as a ward of the state. It's not abandoned. It's a horrible decision but it is to save his life. Kids with this kind of problem often end up like this. It's actually the best, if saddest way to get them the help they need. Even I countries with tax paying for Healthcare residential treatment, which may be permanent for their whole lives, tends to be out of reach for many. They said it wasn't forever, but it can be depending on hus needs
As someone who lives in a country with decent healthcare, I'm glad I'm unlikely to have to make this choice. My concern would be if my child would feel any additional psych affects of being abandoned by me. I'm not sure how that would play out in a real life scenario.
Sadly they gave up their child to the hospitals care so I dont think they'd be allowed to get him back when he is mentally stable again
I applaud how brave the parents are. Heard several stories of parents coddling and protecting a child who is extremely violent towards their siblings or relatives, some ended up killing their siblings.
How does such a wealthy country not be able to cover medical costs, this dumb founds me. Even though this is not a real situation, this really happens in real life and it's heart wrenching. The US needs better leaders and people in charge, disgusting.
I am so thankful that healthcare is free in my country, i feel so bad for anyone that has to financially suffer so much just to be in good health.
Dr Charles' writing was so good in this episode. the fact that when being attacked you see the training the character would have had to simply protect his face and stop the kid from hurting himself by safely retraining him

When you need help, you need to accept that. Believe me, I understand that personally. It’s disgusting that the option is to give up your child, but that is the option. American healthcare is a joke. I can get the same medicine I could back in America in China (believe me I know I’m gonna get hate for this) and see a doctor out of pocket for cheaper then insurance.

If you really think about it, 11 isn’t a teen yet, but the gap between tweens and adults isn’t that long, it’s only 10 years really. Imagine this on an adult scale, doubled in size and height.
As a person who works in insurance specifically dealing with healthcare in the US yes the solution offered is a actual solution. I can tell you horror stories about how insurance impedes medicines ability to save lives.

While i get that its unthinkable to 'abandon' your child like this, you NEED to think of it the other way around. What about your other child? This ones condition will only get worse, and as he grows up hell get bigger, stronger, and more dangerous. There could be a time you would come home only to find hes killed your younger child.
Its a tough situation but, giving them up IS the best decision.

Update from my previous comment in this video: This kid unfortunately reminds me of a child in my preschool. He’s a bright kid and very curious. But the moment he’s dysregulated, he lashes out physically to his friends and all the educators and takes an insanely long time to calm down. I have been punched, kicked, bitten…and I know this child NEEDS help. Watching this made me relive a bit of that trauma and is the reason why I look forward while dreading a bit coming to work.
It never ceases to baffle me that because of insurance anyone can be denied a treatment without massive bills. It's insane.
Dr Reese, Dr Rhodes, and Dr Manning made this show. None of them deserved to leave and I feel like they should all make a comeback back into this show, I really feel that it would do this show good.
They should have made a spin-off around those two. The episodes featuring them seemed like the least drama “thirsty” if you catch what I mean.

my friend been surrendered to the hospital when he was 8 years old due to his parents think he was violent but it was his older brother, they shocked the doctors while they saying there's nothing wrong with my friend so they left him there and he never seen his parents again without saying goodbye. so i took him under my wing but i was 4 at the time and now he's in the Marines.
How can they say no to the treatment the child needs?? Like seriously??? I'm so glad I'm in UK now!! 😢
There are huge waiting lists to get in CAMHS units in the UK, there is no guarantee of treatment, even suicidal kids are turned away.

The fact that some US families have probably been forced to do this hurts.
As someone with special needs like that kid, I know how it is to have problems with controling your anger. I'm very loud and can get childish and because of this I have hard time getting along with my classmates and family. On top of that I was diagnosed with autism and no matter how much I try to control my emotions, they're always popping off at the wrong time. But unlike the boy, I don't use violence if unnecessary. Anyone lese can relate?
Autistic here! I had frequent meltdowns when I was in classes at school due to stress. Right up till college. Never hurt anyone physically, but I can understand the frustration in being unable to control those kinds of overwhelming emotions.
I was specifically looking for an autism related comment on here because it sort of blew my mind that no one really mentioned it, given what that whole thing sounded like to me.
I live in New Zealand but my g****m heart breaks for this family. Imagine having to institutionalise one child with violent psychopathy to save your other child's life. I couldn't imagine that choice.
It's not just the other child's life, but also the prior child's life too. By hurting other (unintentionally), he hurts himself but he doesn't realize it. The mental abnormality is something that parents will most likely be unable to manage or heal him either.
They need a professional expert for proper treatment and procedure. But I know it's also not the best method. I'm aware (some if not most) mental facilities cause more trauma than it should have healed. Countless cases where they become even more broken or almost brainwashed which is pretty sad.
As a psych student, it hurts me that these stuff happens. I genuinely want to help people with mental challenges, but with the reputation that mental hospitals and wards get from real-life events and cases, it's difficult to have people rely on psychologists/psychotherapists/psychiatrists - COMPLETELY understandable. It's just, there are also those who really want to help via applying the practice and knowledge they have.
Then again, psychology is a relatively ambiguous and morphed study especially with the culture of always having to fit the standards of society. It's a dilemma I do have, but in the end, I just want to help. Honestly, no one will ever know the BEST way to help them. That's why we rely on communication, connection, and compassion so much. Those are the few major ways we can do to understand them, but will never fully experience their own experience.

He’s not a ‘psychopath’ 1. he experiences empathy and remorse 2. lack of empathy doesn’t automatically make someone violent or dangerous anyway 3. he simply had multiple mood regulation disorders. (i’m aware it’s just a character) He wasn’t an evil unfeeling person who hurt others for entertainment or had a plan to kill anyone he simply couldn’t regulate his emotions so he was easily set off and couldn’t ground or calm himself so he lashed out on those around him

I watched a story on the news in my country with a family that said No to the drs, No to the medication and the treatment facility.
That boy one day turned around and killed his mother in a fit of uncontrollable anger.
It took his mother dying for the whole family to finally say yes to the facility and that boy is now a man and he still lives at the facility because the damage was done and he won't ever be free again.
He gets days out to town to interact with his other family members but he must be returned and if he is out past curfew then the police will be sent out to get him back.
His father can't forgive him but he hasn't cut him out of the family either because he knows it was his fault that he failed to act when he should have.
If I was the father I would have gotten out of the room and then fell to my knees and start crying I couldn’t even imagine how would it be to give your son away but I suppose you’ve got to be there for the family
People don't always react by collapsing into a wet heap. Most of us do that when the thing is all over and finished. There is an immense amount of paperwork to do and talks with the older child. And, don't forget, there is a very seriously injured younger child in the hospital, as well.

Totally not related but where I'm from, we have 1 general hospital, you can surgery done today and be released tomorrow because we do not have enough beds, there is 1 day in the week designated for surgery so you'll have to wait until that day to get surgery, American Healthcare is still far greater than others. 😭😭
Canadian here. If my kid had to be admitted to a facility it'd be free and they'd still be my kid. This is why I pay taxes.
You forget the case of the kid whose parents begged to be admitted and be given help who was sent home countless of times and ended up dying from what I remember and I believe this was in Ontario. Stop acting like our medical system works it doesn't work. It's free and people die waiting for care if they get it. Look at what's currently happening stop deceiving people.

We fostered an 8 year old child that had a really tough background. In and out of the system. Caught him in the middle of trying to set the house on fire in the middle of the night. Tried to kill the cat, and then throw huge rocks at another boy that was just way too much for us to be able to hand, the foster program figured it was time for full time care. We felt horrible for the child , but we had other foster kids to care for. Only after did we find out we were the 8th house that he was placed in, one after another. The foster systems are underfunded and the older kids don't get the help they need.
Absolutely disgusting that for a patient to receive treatment they could have to be abandoned by their family. This is why universal healthcare is so important.
Unforunately, this happens in places with Universal Healthcare. Canadian provinces do not cover theraputic group homes as health care.
There was a kid in my school who was like this, easy to anger, didn't react to authority. And this is kind of the same instances that were happening at the school, only he would get mad at the kids who were smaller than he was and they couldn't do anything.But one day he got mad at a kid about 3x the size he was. I didn't end well for him and well I never saw him again.

Welcome to an accurate representation of US mental health care. It’s sad how many people can’t get their needs met, simply because the system won’t cover it.
I like this clip for one reason. It shows you the hard reality that sometimes when you want your son or daughter to have a good well-being, you have to make difficult choices in order that your child will have a brighter future. In this case the parents had to surrender the custody of Jamie just so he gets the help he needs. That is a very difficult and painful choice to a parent, and not everyone are capable making that decision.
I'm from the UK and naive to medical insurance - why don't they cover whatever is needed by the person? Like what is 'accessible' to patients and how do they determine it? So sad really
Depending on the healthcare plan and insurance they have it can be extremely expensive for the patient or the patients family

Me and my brother used to have a really hard time dealing with anger and there are still things that set us off, he's been violent towards me twice even after he learned to controll it better. The biggest problem is that we've never gotten any kind of help and now have no idea why we're like this. My mom is supporting us in trying to find out but we aren't really telling our dad because he just thinks my mom's looking for things that aren't there.
Then maybe your ignorant dad is the cause. Have you thought about therapy?
My brother was very violent towards me and would often beat me up but it wasn’t until he became violent to them that they kicked him out. He never got the help he needed and now he’s in jail. I’m the only one who visits him 😔😔😔
Kudos to you for not completely blocking him out of your life and continuing to visit him, people will never heal if their support system is limited, when he gets out, maybe try and convince him to go through therapy. I don't know your brothers behavior, attitude and/or mental condition but its on your parents for not getting him the help he needs.

What kind of abhorrent healthcare system forces these kinds of ultimatums on parents and patients? It's absolutely disgraceful that the insurance companies wouldn't cover the cost of the child's treatment.
The US healthcare/social service system just blows my mind away in all the wrong ways. I work in social services and my agency does everything they can to keep the child out of our care. In this situation the agency would pay the cost themselves rather than the parents have to surrender the child. Whatever resources we can throw at the parents we will.

I can't Imagine what it must be like to have something like this in your family I have never seen anything like this in real life and the fact that it does exist has to be a complete shot to the heart of a family and I am completely empathetic and sympathetic with anyone family who goes through something like this

That is the USA, people pay less taxes at the cost of over expensive (sometimes unaffordable) health and education.
I know it's just a TV show but this shows exactly what's wrong with the United States' healthcare system. If this were Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom or Europe they wouldn't need to relinquish their guardianship to the state.
Now that I’ve binged all House MD clips available on UA-cam, I am slowly making the transition towards the Chicago franchise. I love it already

I'm the oldest son in the family and even I used to hit my brother violently due to anger as a kid, but later I myself used to feel bad about it no because I did a mistake but the fact that I abused my own brother. I still cry about even today, couldn't be a good elder brother. Hope I can atleast become a good father

I'll be honest, I have anger problems of my own and multiple mental issue, so when I get angry and I'm around people i walk away and lock myself away. I even isolate myself during the day.

I lived in fear. On one hand I’m ashamed and on the other I’m glad, because it started the road to recovery. Doors were locked, anything sharp was put away. We made sure we could always see him and not be surprised. I wondered if we would end up another awful news story. Everyone we know adores him, he is adorable. He is autistic and I thought a lot of it was because of that diagnosis but I’ve come to realise that his mental condition is unrelated to that but it did make it harder to see at first.

I understand the kid's suffering. I too get explosive whenever I get angry because someone teases or bullies me. I got so filled with rage that I lashed out in uncalled-timing and unintentionally hurting anyone around me.
that would be one of the hardest decisions any parent would e o make in order to help their child and their family for the future.
I have 4 kids with ASD, it would break me to millioms of pieces to see anyone of them having to be taken away to help them.
I am greatful for all my babies and their special gift as they are blessed with a gift.
There is always someone who has it worse. I cannot imagine that… confliction and pain to such a young child. Although, I do like the the parents. To me, they were willing to sacrifice their parenthood of him to better him as a person. I’m not a parent, but I still think that’s the better thing to do
Honestly I make fun of America sometimes because of how ridiculous they treat their citizens and you know the rest but dang. This is sad. I can’t help but feel so awful for them sometimes when I find things out like this. Nobody should have to give up their child. Nobody should have to choose between being homeless or getting medical treatment. Or losing a loved one in order to get the help you need ?? Idk it’s just sad
I currently work with disabled children, at a special-ed school, from whom many live in residential facility housings. Unfortunately, with how the medical profession doesnt pay as well in Finland as it does in USA, none of these children seem to be getting the care they need from these residential facility housings.
The school I work at is a part of a residential facility on its own; there are children, grown-ups and elderly.
This is realy sad to see a family in this state, may Jamie get well soon.

Oof, brings me back when i was younger, i used to have massive anger issues, i cannot tell if the ADHD was the cause, but the moment i hit puberty the anger issues disappeared, and according to tests the ADHD was pretty much ADD at that poinbt, the "hyperactive" part was gone. Seeing this i guess i can consider myself lucky that i did not need to get locked up somewhere for years, separated from my family and friends potentially.

I used to work with young children who were autistic. He came up behind me one day, for no reason, and kicked me in the back. He got me in the kidneys. I almost collapsed. I will NEVER trust again!
