    I have a theory, at the beginning when he "levitates" its actually a cheap trick. Okay so he has completely metal shoes and the table is made from magnets and so is the roof causing a push and pull at the same time thus causing the "levitating" effect.

    Some of my favorite routines by P & T are where they SEEM to be revealing a trick, show a method, then spin it to a surprise twist, hiding the REAL trick with a reveal.

    • @kd5nrh

      Or the clear cups and balls, where they really do reveal all of it, but do it so well it still works.

      Yep. They may not be the best at “magic”, I don’t know if they are or aren’t.
      But they are among the best showmen in the business. And those types of acts are a key part of their showmanship.

    • @gmoops8986
      @gmoops8986 3 роки тому +2

      Absolutely. They say they are liars. They lied, they show how they lied. Now we're gonna lie again. Then WHAM! It was a totally different lie.
      That is showmanship.

    I love both, Penn is surprisingly smart, he tries to downplay himself as a big dumb guy, but he is anything but dumb. Teller is just freaking genius, I think that Teller is probably the most knowledgeable magician today.
    And they both are at the frontier of ethics in magic, they really go beyond the norm when it comes to ethically deceiving people. And what I especially love about them is, that they are living proof of the fact, that audience can enjoy (at least some) tricks more, when they understand how the trick is done and how skilled the magician must be to pull it off. I suspect it is influenced by Penn's juggling past, because no one thinks that jugglers use magic, and you can easily recognise good juggler if he juggles more things than the other juggler (or more dangerous things, or several different things). Their version of clear cups and balls is perfect example. There is a lot of meh magicians when it comes to cups and balls, but there are some great ones, who understand, that it is not just about the method. It is about entertaining the audience. It is about misdirection at just the right time. It is about the surprise pay out at the end. And even if someone knows the method, they can still be amazed by the skill and sleight of hand of real expert.

    The danger in the act has a moral component: has the audience signed up for that danger? Penn & Teller's shows are safe forums where you can just relax and nothing bad will happen. When we watch parkour videos, we're signing up for something going wrong, and I think that the performer has a responsibility to the audience to let them know that it's real and could go wrong, so the audience can consent to the distress caused by things going wrong. I respect Penn & Teller for their stance, as I know they are cheating when doing dangerous looking stuff. It's a different facet of their honesty.

    I enjoy magic for the skill of the operator, even if I know (and occasionally spot) how they do it or if they show exactly how it is done, the skill of the performance and ingenuity of the design is what is truly amazing. Knowing just increases the appreciation of the skill, because usually, I still cannot see them do it.

    @kev25811 3 роки тому +10

    I gotta say in regards to their "we only perform safe tricks" thing... I think you misunderstood or at least mis-explained the part they think is unethical.
    They only do safe tricks. They tell everyone that. For two reasons: 1.) Nobody tries to emulate the trick in an unsafe way. Like... They've done a bullet catch trick. Knowing that they wouldn't do a trick that could go awry, you won't think you can literally learn to catch a bullet.
    ALSO... it's not so much the audience would be complicit (though I know Penn has said that, I think he's choosing a poor word). It's that the audience could be traumatized.
    He thinks it's immoral to put people in that position.
    And some people say "well other magicians say the trick is dangerous and turn away if you would be upset" or whatever. But those same magicians will say "watch me make this thing magically levitate." So the audience doesn't necessarily believe them when they say the trick is dangerous.
    They assume it's... A trick.
    Skydiving and parkour doesn't require suspension of disbelief. So they're fine to do their act because everyone KNOWS it could go bad.
    With magic, the audience BELIEVES they're about to be deceived. They can't fully understand a stunt is real. They assume there's a lever or a mirror somewhere making it safe.

    What you dont ackowlrdge that Penn and Teller do, is they admit they cant walk as fine a line on things now as they used to. They have almost 50 years of doing this and they cant physically do some of tricks they used to. In past, Penn would deliberatly let some of tricks be 'caught' as part of a greater trick.
    As Penn likes to quote "Its easy to be great. Anyone can be great q out of 10 times. Its hard to be gooz 100 times in a row."
    Or something to that effect.

    As someone who loves magic and has dabbled a bit but doesn’t have the dexterity to do slight of hand or the commitment to improve it, I prefer a magician that I know exactly what he is doing but I’m unable to actually follow it and see him do it to one where I have no clue. A magician like D.K where I can see most of what he is doing but he does it perfectly, I’m more impressed with that.

    Love your content. Agree I love that they show it's a trick and not magic. I takes practice and time and sometimes money, and sometimes a lot of money to preform You be you.
    Something to think about. One of the best discussions I ever had with my mom was that I was using filler words when talking. I was using "like" a ton more than you were in this video. Stop for a second and gather your thoughts, it also gives that person or persons (and yes I believe in this context although I hate the fact that persons even exists as a word is correct) time to catch up with your thoughts and a possible rebuttal. At the same time you can gather your thoughts and engineer how you word something to dissuade and, or prove your point.

    Considering safety. If Blaine is doing this for real, and Penn and Teller do seemingly dangerous thing, what’s the difference to the audience? If you wanted to do the exact same thing as Blaine, but make it 100% safe, you could make them indistinguishable. So for example: if Blaine did P&T’s bear trap routine for real, would it be different for the audience? Probably not. The only difference is framing. Blaine is known to push the envelope a little bit by doing something crazy and undeniably real, but nonetheless impossible. While P&T tend to let on that it’s all a trick even if it seems real. So as far as the audience perception, it’s virtually the same, some people will believe it’s real, while some are more skeptical. Same with every show. But regarding the ethics of it ACTUALLY being real? That’s a tough one.

    • @EduardTodor
      @EduardTodor  3 роки тому +1

      The difference is that pnt make a big deal to tell the audience it's not dangerous. Otherwise there'd be no difference. They still use the emotional triggers to make you wonder.... but in the back of your mind you know it's "bullshit". With david... it's the opposite lol

    • @halohero147
      @halohero147 3 роки тому

      Eduard Todor I’d disagree about P&T. I’d say they put it in the audiences mind to distrust them in a playful sense. And Blaine does the antithesis of that. But they both do seemingly dangerous things with a caveat or two. If you took transplanted their routines to another magician, it would be perceptively different, but dangerous nonetheless. The dangerousness is inherent to the trick.

I understand that doping is cheating, but is there really a difference in it? After all, if you are using doping, you are going an extra mile ahead that most people won't go, and that's the same principle as risking your life with some dangerous magic trick.

    It's not about making the audience feel guilty, it's about not wanting to cause potential trauma to the audience. Witnessing someone get seriously hurt or die before your own eyes can cause trauma, that's a simple fact.

    So your 'research' was listening rmto any intervirw Penn has given in last 45yrs to learn his and Tellers history? How long did that take? 5, 6 min? And that includes loading youtube and searching penn and teller then watching the video 3 times?

      @@EduardTodor I dont have a 'take' of facts. I was just pointing out that in your vid you aact like it was some super, secret unknown information. Only its been mentioned in almost every interview its ever been done, Penn refers to himself as carny juggler trash and Teller being the student and philosopher of magic. Its not something new the way you seemed to hint at. Anyone with a browser can find an interview from any month from any of last 45yrs or so where Penn talks about this.

      Same thing with other info. It comes off like you are revealing new, unknown info about their crew but Penn and Teller have talked openly about habing a team working with them fir at least 30 tears now. Back on first tv special they did in 8ps, they bring it up.

    It's weird, I think that some of their effects are astonishing - Teller's ball and hoop and his version of Miser's Dream in particular. Really beautiful magic. And the ring magic for a single person in front of a whole audience is one of my favourite tricks of all time.
    But when they do less unique stuff, it falls flat. I think their card tricks, even leaving aside the shoddy handling, are generally terrible.
    And there's a huge difference between telling your audience that you don't really have powers, which most magicians do, and actually revealing how the tricks are done, which I think is disrespectful to the magicians working the streets and restaurants. Maybe it makes your show better, but it makes their show a lot worse.

    I disagree with the danger in the act :
    an artist will not perform a dangerous act with no one watching (compared to street parkour) so by watching him you give the magician a (small) reason to do it. But that's minor reason.
    If you pay to see it as an audiance, you are giving that person a reason to put his life in danger (that is where you don't want to be as an audiance, espeally with magic where it is not flagged "dangerous", it is flagged "magic" : everything is supposed to be lies , even the dangers)
    If an event invite you to perform that trick with people arround (like in a con), are they asking you to put your life in danger ? Do they know it is dangerous and you could die in the process or did they just read the sign that say "Magic". They don't know how your magic is done. They may think you have a way to breath is that barrel.
    I think it is not moral to advertise something as magic if it is dangerous and people don't know it. (Because magic is supposed to be about lying, fake danger and crafted stuffs)
