Indeed the typical PTU (Power Transfer Unit) also known as the barking dog. This system transfers hydraulic power, and is mostly heard when starting up or shutting down as one of the two engines is delivering the power and the other one not. Sometimes this can be heard in flight too or during takeoff and landing when a lot of hydraulic power is needed.
I was on an A320 for the first time and I remember the pilot making funny comments about the odd noises that Airbus planes make. He went on to say it wasn't him trying to turn the engine over and grinding the gears which got some laughs from the passengers. I have to say they were weird sounds
I have been on many A320 flights and never ever heard the barking go continuously like in this video, just the initial whine and a few barks, then a constant high-pitched noise until the second engine starts. Interestingly enough, in my last flight there was an actual dog (like in this video) and he remained quite for the entire flight. But after landing it started to bark at about the same time the aircraft started doing its own barking. It was like they were talking to each other.
Put powers brakes steering and control surfaces among other things. Those pumps get warm so you can't do much in the way of shielding to make them quiet.
Passenger: That poor dog! United: Dear concerned passenger, we would like to reassure you that what you were hearing was the aircraft's hydraulics system, not a dog. You can rest comfortably knowing our track record: if those had been dogs, they would have been killed or lost by us.
Lol usually A320's PTU sounds something like this: Woof. Woof. Woof. There is 1 or 2 seconds between each woof. In this video it sounds much faster like: woofwoofwoofwoofwoof
I never heard the barking sound of a320 too intense like this. It might scared some passengers. Once I flew with Tigerair and the barking sound wont stop until takeoff, before, few passenger was scared but then the pilot explained it on the pa.
Febriant Leocesio In this case there was a few passengers, less then half of cabin seats. And they are the Russians, and it is difficult to scare them.:)
This must've been large difference between the green and the yellow but it's PTU is one of the reasons why I love A320 not as much I love A350 but still ;)
This is an example of the happy a320 bark. Not to be confused with the aggressive bark. When other airbuses are around like here, it makes a high pitch happy bark. Where as when Boeings are around, it makes an aggressive sounding bark. But arguably, the best part was when the real dog started barking along with the airplane LOOOOOOL 😂😂😂😂
The A320-200 has this sound because the engine is starting or you can here it when Taxi the reason that sound is playing because their are pumping the PTU
The first time I heard this sound from the a320 was when I was flying on frontier and when I heard the sound I thought the animals on the tail where actually talking
Riswan Ahmad P. If the plane has sat for a while, like overnight or perhaps longer, it will need to build hydraulic pressure back up. Hence the longer "barking." Sort of like a car that's sat for a while. It needs to warm up. Or an even better example is a truck or bus with airbrakes. The pump runs constantly the first few minutes when you start it.

Well it must sound like a dog because the real dog responded lmao
ahahah))))

HAHAHAHAH

Lol
damn that's the most aggressive PTU actuation I've ever seen

0:35 you can actually see when the ptu starts, the ailerons hydraulic system comes to life.
Oh yea
No they’re doing their pre flight checks checking ailerons and so on the ptu is to do with the engines
@AK Media
Actually PTU has nothing to do with the engines. The sounds can be heard even when all engines are shut down.
CHRONICLE KAI yes it does watch captain Joe’s video if you don’t believe me
AK Media it’s the hydraulics
lol it sounds like our old washing machine on spin cycle just before the clutch failed
orangie84 😂
it sounds something i was awfully imagining >_>
Washing machines do be sounding like airbuses tho
I knew it was PTU. Thanks to captain Joe XDdd

I've heard this many times on the A320 but this is the most rapid one I've heard ! 😂
Very old plane
PTU sounds like a professional glass cleaner re-scrubbing one tough spot lol
Yeah, it’s sounds like rescrubbing a glass window/ or a rubber thing rubs the plane’s skin than being sounds like “dog barks.”
Hahahaha
A dog on board barked at the PTU 😂

Tim I was wanting to tell that too!
same here
+Reuben Jacob Some people such as me also know everything about planes.
Yeah flying the bus for 6 years now, if I don't know that ;)
yeah but you were to slow mate, but now we know that you know to, so that´s alrigth baby doll
Jeez, someone must've gotten the PTU high on drugs! I've never heard it go wacko like this ever before!
It’s either was grounded for a while or it was being put into maintenance. It must’ve lost a lot of pressure
Lol was there an actual dog on the plane? At 0:41 - 0:43 you hear an actual dog bark 😂🐶
lmao hahahaha
Iden Li *TRIGGERED*
No there is a legitimate Dog on the plane
+Christopher Park +The Poor Teenage Gearhead
Listen @0:41, there IS a dog that barks twice. Listen closely.
it must be a joke from the author of this video ;)
I was on an A320 for the first time and I remember the pilot making funny comments about the odd noises that Airbus planes make. He went on to say it wasn't him trying to turn the engine over and grinding the gears which got some laughs from the passengers. I have to say they were weird sounds
I adore pilots who love their jobs and they are joking around! I want to become just like them 😊.
I've never been on an a320 that it sounds that long!!
Holy moly the longest PTU startup I have ever heard
watch captain joe's explanation of this. its actually not a dog however 0:41 - 0:42 is an actual dog
lol
“ wow that second bark sounds like a dog for sure “ then realized that was an actual dog barking
That why the title is "two barking dogs", there is also an actual dog barking and it looks like he's responding to the PTU "bark" 😂😅
This particular sound is heard when the engine no.2 is started and is that of the PTU. It is especially heard in Airbus A320.
You can even see the ailerons leveling right when the PTU starts to equalize the pressure between the hydraulic systems.

That would scare the sh!t out of someone who is new to Airbus flying🤣

0:41 - 0:43 The real Dog on the plane tried to communicate with the fake bark!
I already knew that it's the ptu before I clicked the video. XD
lol...same here.

Yeah it´s the classic question that you get when powering or shutting down the engines
I love the A319, A320, and the A321. I also love the Neo variants
What about the baby 318? I love it

🤣🤣🤣Didn't expect the other dog response
It's the pilot's seeing-eye dog. He's been left in the hold and he knows he ought to be in the cockpit helping the pilot to fly the plane.
same it is the ptu as what tim has written but you only here the sound when the second engine start i have been a co-pilot since 6 years
So, the aircraft barked and a dog responded

United: Dear concerned passenger, we would like to reassure you that what you were hearing was the aircraft's hydraulics system, not a dog. You can rest comfortably knowing our track record: if those had been dogs, they would have been killed or lost by us.
The sound you heard was the PTU engaging, and then going into oscillation as the hydraulic pressure changes.
Lol usually A320's PTU sounds something like this: Woof. Woof. Woof. There is 1 or 2 seconds between each woof. In this video it sounds much faster like: woofwoofwoofwoofwoof
there is nothing strange about this sound. it's the PTU kicking in to support the hydraulic system during engine start-up.
I can literally sleep to this, ahhhh relaxation
The coolest noise I've ever heard 🤣🤣🤣
Now I know what is it cap Joe taught me :)
The noise is the hydraulic pressure being generated on the plane. It is very common on the airbus a320
I love A320s so much
This is the PTU or the power transfer unit. You hear it durng startup. It treansferes presshure between green and wellow HYD systems.
For more details, watch Captain Joe's channel.
This video is SCREAMING Captain Joe
Tenor captain Joe explains this barking sound in a video, check it out!
It is the PTU Power Transfer unit and the yellow hydraulic pump.
0:41 they really have to fix that hydraulic imedeatly
The irl doggo barked at it 😂
А я на арбузах ещё не летал...всё на бобиках катаюсь!)))
It's the hydraulic backup system cuz ony one engine is running, powering only one of the hydraulic systems.
Please check out #flywithcaptainjoe 's channel. The barking sound is well explained.
Thanx!
The strange noise your hearing is the PTU running to pressurise the hydraulics.
I'm more concerned about the fact that one of the planes in the background most probably got blown up
Nice, I thought you just didn't know about the PTU that makes that noise but there is actually a dog at 0:41
I never heard the barking sound of a320 too intense like this. It might scared some passengers. Once I flew with Tigerair and the barking sound wont stop until takeoff, before, few passenger was scared but then the pilot explained it on the pa.

The time to really worry is when the plane lifts one of its landing gear and proceeds to wet the runway.
Only possible if it is moving at 150 mph and somebody is in the lavatory
I’m definitely finding a ring tone for that
I remember flying with a a320 and this happened, and the lady beside me was scared and praying
2020. I miss this sound 😢
Yeah, screw the virus
Everybody gangsta until the aircraft lifts one of its landing gear and proceeds to wet the runway!
This must've been large difference between the green and the yellow but it's PTU is one of the reasons why I love A320 not as much I love A350 but still ;)
Reminds me of starting an old diesel😆😅
It's the airbus a320, the dog whisperer
did anyvody hear the dog barked at the PTU
Man, that PTU sound had me pissing myself laughing.
Yo that PTU sound tho 😩😩😩😩
Speed saw sound😁
Speed function "PTU"?
That was the PTU (Power transfer unit)
Good ol' PTU!!!
Also, @0:41, I think there was an actual dog that barked? Hence "two dogs". I think a lot of people missed that.
That dog is traumazised for life now.
A320 barks angry
Pilot there there buddy.
That’s not a dog, it’s the plane itself...
This is an example of the happy a320 bark. Not to be confused with the aggressive bark. When other airbuses are around like here, it makes a high pitch happy bark. Its the PTU in the hydralics system
love that sound

The first time I heard this sound from the a320 was when I was flying on frontier and when I heard the sound I thought the animals on the tail where actually talking
Do they allow dogs on air planes cuz I heard one?
I never heard the PTU noise this long. Usually I only hear one long sound and 3 to 4 repetitive shorter "bark" and thats it.
There's definitely a dog lol! But, is it just me or did the hydraulic go longer than most?
qual assento ???? Aproveitou a PTU entrar em funcionamento pra deixar o cachorro latir né ??????
it sounds like my tractor starting up lol
It sounds like starting a car in cold weather
wow the PTU took pretty long in this a320. usually it's much shorter o.O
PTU is it helped the captain to start the engines or taxi it can help the controls the rudder and the throttle
That sounds like the starter motor of a really old car or airplane.
very clean windows!
Legend has it that the Airbus A320 family planes use actual dogs to operate the PTU
haha :))
loud ahh airbus hydraulic system
I’ve always wondered, what exactly in the pump itself causes the sound
In laughing so hard 😂😂
0:36 When your sex drive is too high that night

The ptu has gone crazy
Pilot could turn on yellow electric pump to decrease PTU noice. This plane definitelly stays for a long time.
that ptu have a problem? why so too long?
