    Love this quick informative video. Keep them coming!
    YT is Wrong about the “15 minute video” strategy. I skip so many videos because they’re too long. This 2 minute vid, I’d watch any day.

    Sorry for being late to the show. But thought I'd share something I've done for years.
    I recently retired from making kydex holsters for guns. One thing I learned in High School sheet metal shop was pattern making. In my holster business, whenever i wanted to toy with a new idea or design, I used paper.
    Instead of using leather or kydex I will take a blank sheet of paper from my printer and use that paper to draw out, bend, fold, cut & etc. to prove my idea will or will not work.
    If it won't work using a piece of paper, the idea/design will not work. Cheap and fast.
    I've not decided whether I want to learn this craft, but your videos are helping me in my decision process. I'm older, but just can't stop learning new things.
    Great video and great work all round.

    One thing that i use is thin cardboard to put on the back of all my paper templates to make them more study to work with. Also, what that does is i can reuse the paper template again. another trick that use is if i get a paper template i make sure that i make couple of copies of the original one so just incase for whatever reason i mess up i always have back up ones.

      @@shamanbeartwo3819 Never thought about using a cereal box for backing patterns. Great idea.

    My number one “hack” is use a bump stop and square when cutting leather into a square or rectangle regardless of the size of the piece. I use a piece of brass but a 1x4 piece of wood with one perfectly straight edge will work also and much cheaper. One other thing I do is put rug tape on the back of all my straight edges that I use to cut leather. It really holds the straight edge in place when cutting. Use rug tape not stair or carpet tape.

      Great suggestions! I'll put those on the list for sure.

    Instead of traditional bump stops, I use acrylic quilting templates. I have three, a 4in x 36in, a 6in by 24in, and a 6in by 12in. The measurements marked on them go all the way across the see-through acrylic, they are over an 8th in thick, work well as bump stops and squares.

    Great video love the dragon. On the subject of Matt Boards, I use it for backing on clocks.

    Not a hack but I followed your advice and got a 12 ounce maul for beveling and backgrounding. Much better than the common 16 ounce for this type of work since you don’t need to be a muscle man anyway.

    good info, as always. keep up the fantastic work
    when tooling do you prefer a flat or tapered maul head? and why?

    • @TheLeatherverse
      @TheLeatherverse  Рік тому +1

      When tooling, I've only ever used a flat maul. One of the reasons to use a tapered maul would be the angle you hold the maul or the stamp. A flat maul requires you to hold it 90* to the stamp...a tapered one allows you to hold it at more of an angle.

    What are some good leather craft tool brands?

    • @TheLeatherverse
      @TheLeatherverse  Рік тому

      Craftool from Tandy is a great economy brand, and most of their tools are decent quality. A step up from that would be the master series from Weaver. Of course, Barry King makes great tools.

    I didn't understand #3 one there? Can you explain that one a bit more?

    • @TheLeatherverse

      Essentially your dominate hand steers the knife, and your thumb on your weak hand pushes it. This prevents you from. having a "runaway" knife that messes up your project. The knife can only travel as far as your thumb can push it.

      I just realized I explained the wrong one! lol. Sorry about that.
      Adhere matt board to the back of your project with carpet tape to prevent the leather from stretching. Its also a great way to "back the project" after you've 3d embossed it and filled it with leather dough. Let me know if I should do a short video on just this technique.
