- 200 miles using the Lane Centering feature on the Subaru Crosstrek. The good, the bad and the ugly. We'll find out together how good the lane centering features is on this 200 mile trip over a variety of road conditions.
It's better than you think, but not as good as you'd like.

I guess the lesson learned from this experiment is that you should place more than just your finger on your steering wheel when driving even a Subaru with the lane centering feature on it. I occasionally drive on roads where all of a sudden there are no more painted lines demarcating a lane and if you are not paying attention and only have one finger on your steering wheel, you may run into a serious, serious problem when driving at highway speeds. What I don't get is how this can be beneficial...more relaxing in general, but interrupted by holy crap! moments. I'd think this would be even worse with Tesla, where you'd let your guard down for many, many hours and then have milliseconds to avoid an accident it's powerful AI couldn't sort out. I think it would tense me up the whole time, like driving with a student driver. I have a '22 Forester on order, will find out for myself soon.

Have you looked into installing a Comma3 using thr SunnyPilot mods? Other Crosstrek drivers have had great results and it does an excellent job at lane centering versus stock eyesight that has a tendency to ping pong and get confused easily.
I have a 2019 Crosstrek Limited which does not have lane centering. After watching many videos , I am beginning to think that perhaps Toyota has the best suite of safety features presently for a mainstream auto manufacturer.

I have this car sometimes it's too invasive when you're actually driving it on the highway and it keeps trying to centre me. It's ok but not the best system! But I'm.happy that I have safety features for this price! Mercedes & tesla are top!

Great video on the eye sight feature! Which trim is this Crosstrek, and did it struggle up the mountains with your car full of gear?
It was the CrossTrek Limited model with the larger 2.5 liter engine. No problem at all. The smaller engine might have struggled with the steep inclines and thinner air, but no problem with the 2.5 liter.
@@joshbloom9646 Thank you, that's exactly the info i needed! My 1999 impreza would struggle up Tahoe or Yosemite. I'm definitely going to pick up a Crosstrek sport this year.
Wow. I had someone try to tell me their Subaru had lane keeping like my Tesla. This is not even remotely close. I can transit complex roads, tight mountain roads, VERY heavy rain. All sorts of traffic conditions with the FREE autopilot, and it’s insanely good. It’s usually better then most drivers.
It’s not really free is it? It comes included with the very expensive car, right?
@@joshbloom9646 mate, I’m here to look at Subarus “self driving”, as someone I know, who owns a very top model STI made a direct comparison to it. I’m making a very clear statement about the self driving capabilities of the 2 cars and comparing the FREE version of auto pilot that comes INCLUDED with my base model. Is undoubtedly superior to what I just witnessed. No need to be a cock about it. His STI cost 62k, my model 3 was 68 (both are probably much cheaper in USA). I have a HOST of features that his car doesn’t have, including being safest in class. So if you want to talk price, they are both in the 60’s. I’m already ahead as after 120,000kms I’ve spent zero dollars on servicing and fuel (almost all of which has been my own home solar). His last service was $2800, and with a shit fuel economy of 11L per 100 over an equivalent distance I’m well ahead again.
Regardless of price, I’ve seen this on the cheaper model Subarus. This eyesight is rubbish/ scary: hard to trust in comparison. And no doubt hard to get updates. I have seen my autopilot exponentially improve with OTA updates that cost zero and require zero of my time to get.
Again. I’m here to compare self driving capabilities. And there is zero comparisons IMHO. Don’t get butt hurt over an observation.
We aren’t even talking about FSD which IS an optional extra.
Lol AP with camera is not that good anymore, be careful on 2 lane highway please, phantom breakjng can come randomly.
@@jakevo5475 interesting you say not that good “anymore”. The several we have in the family have improved considerably since 2019 with each subsequent update. If yours has “deteriorated”, you might need to book it in for service or recalibrate the cameras. I have had zero phantom braking in the last??? 20,000km. It’s very very good. Others share my experience.
Since we are in a Subaru chat… my friend who a very pristine top model Subaru wagon imported from Japan, has been looking to turn off his emergency brake assist as it’s been nearly putting him through the windscreen with no warning, albeit with his upgraded brake package. 🤷🏼♂️ no brand is immune from phantom braking when you have emergency augmented systems operating in-front of the driver.
Understanding their limitations and hovering your foot over the accelerator as you crest a blind hill with a car looking to enter the lane is the best way to work with these systems as they improve. (Well they will with software updates on the Tesla - prob not so much with the Subaru 😅)
Do you know of a way to turn off the need to have your hands on the wheel when using lane assist in this vehicle?
You cannot turn that off.

Hello, I could hear the indicator beep. Maybe try slowing down and then up into the turn to keep in the lane? Its scanning so give it longer time to search in heavy turns? Optics?
It can't. The eyesight system can only see straight ahead. If there is a sharp turn, eyesight won't be able to see the whole turn and FAIL.
Even in the video, it will still fail if he slows down because, the camera cannot turn to look at the lanes.
But somehow, the car still knows that they is a car in front of me which is weird (does it have radar or what?)
I got the 2022 premium and yup, some turn don't work well with eyesight no matter what the speedd is.
I use this a lot it’s a great feature but sometimes it will complain I don’t have my hands on the steeering wheel then other times I won’t get a warning at all despite not having my hands on the steering wheel. I wish I could figure out how to not get it to warn me so I could use it without my hands.
would pressing your knee against the bottom of the wheel work to satisfy the sensor? i just signed on a '21 sport model, curious if the knee thing would work
@@skadoosh3820 yeah but it is kind of a pain Because 30 seconds after taking your knee off it will warn you again
@@kermit1 I saw another UA-camr plug a plastic bottle of water into the triangle on steering wheel and that works well.
Turn off the audio warning feature and just let it tug the wheel. Not perfect but gets rid of the irritating beeps.
Very scary moment. I would never take my hands off of the steering wheel, or even put one finger on it. Way too risky, and dangerous. Tesla is close as far as self driving, but we are decades away from fully autonomous vehicles.

I'm not aware of any updates.
I am planning to drive my 2019 Crosstrek Limited with 152 horse power from Arizona to San Francisco to Lake Tahoe to Las Vegas and back to Arizona next week. Will I be okay going inclines?
Ours does fine in Tahoe. Ours is the 2021 with the bigger 4 cylinder motor, but I'm not sure the horsepower. It does fine. My 2018 Outback with the 3.6 liter V6 is a bigger car but also does fine in higher altitude. Enjoy your trip.
Haha it’s so bad at staying on and in the lane on slight turns.
If the lanes are “big” yeah it kinda sucks. But if you drive in busy cities where lanes are tight, it will work 100% good.
