  • Self-driving cars have been “on the horizon” seemingly forever, and while we still haven’t bridged the gap to true autonomy, today’s driving assist systems are more advanced than ever - and they’re becoming increasingly common. In this video, Edmunds' Clint Simone and Brian Wong put four of the most powerful systems to the test: BMW’s Driving Assistant Plus, GM’s Super Cruise, Ford’s BlueCruise and, of course, Tesla’s Full Self-Driving Beta.

I have a Tesla FSD and it's by far the best self-driving system out there right now. I just wish other companies licensed Tesla's self driving so I could get a nicer car. I don't much like Teslas as cars, but the FSD is nothing short of amazing. FSD + Cadillac's camera based attention monitoring would be an amazing combo.

We don’t drive in stop and go traffic often so we don’t have the stamina a daily driver in Los Angeles has. But the Tesla takes care of EVERY braking and acceleration needed. I still have to change lanes as necessary because the FSD isn’t dealing with RATIONAL and COMPETENT fellow drivers. However, it’s the most relaxed way to deal with stop and go LA traffic.

Bro, the car hesitates way too much, even on surface streets it takes too long to make crucial decisions, which would lead to a major accident. Bad enough humans drive like they have brain damage or something but now you got a car that can't even make a simple determination about when it's safe to cross an intersection the tesla itself chose to take. That's a wonky delusional day dream. They are giving tesla an A for effort but it's still got some bugs to work out. The Cadillac GM super cruise, was confident about the decisions it made and didn't need the driver to keep his hands on the steering wheel the whole time. Tesla can't always win every fight.
Keep in mind Tesla is being kind of a dick for requiring you to keep your hands on the wheel the whole time even though they want you to have complete confidence that there full self driving car will keep you safe.
The idea of a self driving car is supposed to bring a smile to ones face because it let's you know that you can sit back and let it handle the stressful driving situations and get you to where you need to go safely and worry free

We have a subscription to FSD and it takes a little bit to get used to how it does things. For example, the intersection at 19:38 you can control when it starts across by giving some throttle. FSD takes throttle and turn signal inputs without ending the driving session. Also, you only have to kep one hand on the wheel, and not even constantly. I often just use the volume scroll wheel to let it know that I'm paying attention.

But as in the video, the car did navigate across, and it would have crossed earlier during the first traffic gap if he had given some throttle. Summary of video : Best self-driving on highway - Edmunds said it was the 3-year old Tesla Model Y with FSD Beta package. Best self-driving on city streets - Edmunds said it was the 3-year old Tesla Model Y with FSD Beta package. But Tesla asks you to keep hands on the wheel, and Tesla enforces that one hand is pulling on the wheel every 30 seconds or so. Would have been better to test a 2023 Tesla with the new wider-view cameras and upgraded processing that comes free and standard on S/X/Y. Should do one test with completely free and included autopilot package, and then another test with $199 per month FSD Beta package. You should have also tested night driving and longer 30-minute drives because most of America does not drive on freeways like the 405.

Same with the BMW. It also has improved its driving assistance to city streets and highway. Also has 360 cam and HUD which tesla doesnt.
I've only tried BMW and Teslas and BMW is definitely far superior for driving and parking. 360 cam is really nice to have. The gauge cluster screen showing all the cars by u is at a wider more better looking angle. It's also more smooth as this guy said in the video. BMW is overall just a nicer interior to have it on.

I have full FSD beta for my LR AWD Model 3 (purchased late 2019 for $6K). A couple of things you should have noted: while your current Ford system was not bad, you said that your older Lightening system is awful. There's no excuse for that - any modern computer-controlled system should be fixed with an over-the-air update. I felt that your commentary on FSD was mostly fair (with the admission that your surface street anxiety my well be your problem, not FSD's problem). Your having given the most advanced system the lowest rating because it isn't technically "hands-free" was, frankly, stupid. Every FSD user knows that they can be hands-free for several seconds without getting anywhere near "Tesla Jail" - and IMHO, none of these systems should have drivers being hands-free for longer than that anyway. So you downgraded it on the basis of a stupid technicality.
That DOESN'T mean that FSD doesn't sometimes do scary things. Phantom braking is still a thing - on a road trip of several hundred miles, it'll probably happen once or twice - and I always wonder, "What if someone had been behind me?" When I'm driving with full navigation on an uncrowded semi-rural highway, FSD can suddenly decide to take an exit not on my route for no discernable reason and I have to jerk the car back onto the main lane. The anxiety you experienced on taking a left across right-bound traffic on a busy street - that's real too - and, conversely, I sometimes have to goose the car to properly take it's turn at 4-way stops. Honestly, I find complicated surface street FSD use too anxiety-inducing to use routinely - and there's no way I'm going to let it navigate an area under construction.

@@DrKnowsMore There is nothing further to do to implement "hands-free" driving if all FSD did was lane keeping. It does that fine and even just Autopilot has been there for couple of years. The reason FSD beta isn't "hands free" is, IMO, ONLY about Tesla thinking they can avoid legal liability for accidents by forcing drivers to tug on the steering wheel every few seconds to prove that they're paying attention. By hyping the system in stupidly calling it "Full Self Driving", they're doing legal butt-covering; I think that's all.

You need to have your hands on the steering wheel at all times unlike in the other cars where you can actually sit back, take your hands off the steering for ages, and just relax. Correction. At 7:53 the BMW system is NOT for the entire life of the car. On an X5 for example is $5,300 for 8 years of Highway Assistant. After 8 years from vehicle sale the system is deactivated.
It includes: Parking Assistance, Premium Package and Drivers Assistance Professional Package.
The Fine Print from BMW USA:
Included in this package is the Highway Assistant feature which is provided for the first 8 years after vehicle sale. The feature will disable after that time. HA can be used only on controlled access highways.
Not available in Alaska, Guam, Puerto Rico or Hawaii.
Weather, traffic, road conditions, availability of high definition map data and other factors may affect performance. HA helps drivers with the driving tasks but is not a substitute for the driver’s responsibility to operate the vehicle in a safe manner. Drivers must always pay attention to vehicle alerts, warnings, road condition, road objects, other drivers, pedestrians and take corrective action if required. Failure to pay attention and use proper care may result in injury, death or damage to property. Use of HA may not be permissible in certain states. Please refer to your owner’s manual or contact your local BMW center for more information.

Wow! After the first minute of the guy incorrectly describing how Tesla’s FSD operates I immediately distrusted the info given on ALL the other cars! Though I’m not a Tesla owner, I have rented 3 on Turo, with another rental coming up in December. All trips have been over 5 day long rentals, with my next one being a 7 day rental. I can categorically state that his description about having to keep your hands on the steering wheel at all times while FSD is engaged is absolutely incorrect! Now the question is, why was his info incorrect? Was it due to incompetence on his part or done on purpose? Either way, what I thought, or hoped to be an informative comparison of various auto manufacturer’s self driving systems, I’ve ended up questioning the accuracy of their critiques on ALL on the cars in this video!
Right after this video, a video by Marques Brownlee came on, featuring Tesla Self driving. He’s in a Tesla Model S, with a camera mounted to the inside of the windshield pointed so you can see him and most of the steering wheel, and another camera I’m guessing hanging from the inside of the glass roof just behind his right shoulder so you can see the steering wheel, the screens, and the foot pedals. I’m at the 3:12 mark, with MAYBE 15 seconds at the beginning, maybe less, where he activates FSD and takes off in the city. His hand are sometimes close to the steering wheel as he’s not sure what the car will do, so he wants to be prepared to take over, but he never actually touches the steering wheel. MOST of the time though, his hand are on his thighs. The car is making left and right hand turns and automatically turning on its blinkers. It’s not until the 3:04 mark that the car, as I too have experienced, notified him that it requires him to TOUCH the steering wheel so that it can confirm that he is paying attention. Just as I’ve experienced, this is TOTALLY different from what the Edmonds test driver stated about you HAVE to keep your hands on the steering Wheel when using Tesla’s FSD. It’s sad when a big company like Edmonds can’t be trusted to get their facts right! Even worse when they take those incorrect facts and disseminate them to the public! I hope someone from Edmonds reads this comment!
Again, Marques has both his hands on his thighs or even holding his phone to film a closeup of the dash screen!
Here is the link to Marques’s FSD video. Note his hands free use that the Edmonds guy stated you can’t do.

FSD isn’t 2x the cost of standard autopilot. It’s 2x the cost of Advanced Autopilot. Standard Autopilot is free with any Tesla.
Also, giving Tesla 4th place is absurd given it outperformed all others on the highway, and has features the others don’t. If you don’t like the way FSD drives on the street, then don’t use it that way. Tesla making you keep your hands on the wheel seems safer than relying on the user to come back to attention in a fraction of a second like the other machines. Tesla is laser focused on safety, which is why they require that you keep your hands on the wheel. It is a safety system set up to ensure that you are paying attention to the road. Your tests showed that it was the most stable and most reliable on the highway, which begs the question... why do the other systems allow you to drive without your hands on the wheel? That should be a negative for them, not a positive!!
I have been driving FSD for years. It drives me anywhere I need to go and I rarely need to intervene. It navigates on highways, changes lanes, exits, merges, navigates construction zones, works in heavy traffic, in light traffic, at night, during the day, in bad weather. It is absolutely incredible. It is not geofenced. It works on all kinds of streets. It deals with detours. It has the best safety and warning systems. Your own tests demonstrated this!
Yes, you have to keep your hands on the wheel because it is still in beta and is not ready to be used unsupervised. But NONE of these systems are ready for unsupervised driving. The fact that Tesla sends you to Tesla Jail if you don't pay attention IS A GOOD THING. And, just to be clear... Tesla Jail is not permanent. You get the system back after a few weeks. It is just a reminder that Tesla takes safety much more seriously than the other systems.
You really had to bend over backwards to rate FSD 4th. It performed best in your tests and is the only system that works everywhere, including city streets. It literally drives you from point A to point B safely, with few if any interventions required. It won in every category, so, of course... 4th of 4. Might you have another agenda?

Note to my future self: You love how tesla's free autopilot in beta can be activated right after you left your home and help you out on city roads. You can also pay $200/mo and you get the Full Self Driving experience which is not really good at making turns but kinda fun for mostly straight roads with highway exits and enters. Try in the future, it's 2024 now.
You hate how Rivian's highway assist barely enables and randomly disables during highway rides, and cannot be utilized in any non-highway situation, which includes the 'adaptive cruise'. So, it's pretty much a fun sports car in non highway situations (which you cannot speed, so it's a couple of floor it for a split second to enjoy the g-force while you're driving alone situation to keep things safe around the neighborhood.
You dislike how Ford Mustang tends to keep it on the right side of the road, it won't exactly keep you centered in the line, and your OCD might trigger and you take it over...

nah tesla hands down the best, you technically dont need to put ur hands there just to nudge the system over time so that people dont abuse it. but i admit tesla still have issues with the phantom braking and jerking turns

I've never seen any more biased reviews from Edmunds. This video might become the reason I stop considering reviews from Edmunds anymore. Really feeling sad to say this, because Edmunds has been my place to check reviews.

GM's SuperCruise system is simply the best overall, the version used in the Silverado/Sierra has the ability to be used while towing a trailer as well. If I heard correctly, GM is also coming out with "UltraCruize" which will be even more advanced than SuperCruise.

Can you be any more paid for by the other companies? You made it a hands free test to make it an auto fail for the Tesla while admitting it is clearly the most advanced system. You also failed to mention how it reads traffic signals and road signs unlike the other systems that just read lanes and openings for lane changes and doesnt even do that properly.

I would say Subaru's EyeSight based ADAS system is a strong contender in the top 5 or 6. Excellent in lane keeping and centering, adaptive cruise control, driver monitoring. But not a hands-free system.

Nice informational video, could've been better. Also, please move out of the left lane if you're at or below speed limit and there's a large open gap in front of you. Because some of us are actually trying to break the law lol 😂

That’s kind of a bs reason for Tesla’s 4th place finish despite being the best most capable system just because it’s not technically “hands free” If all you want is the best self driving system then there’s no other choice. That said, it’s not worth $12k. I got it when it was $6k, which is a much better price considering that all updates have been free.

Sigh… so should they risk the penalty and possible law suit from telling folk they can defeat the fsd hand requirement? Like alot of you in the comments want them to just say this illegal thing and say screw it ? Huh 😅

It's actually worse than that, what they tested here was autopilot and not FSD, which cis either free version or enhanced autopilot which is like what? 3k? It always annoys me when people mixes FSd which works on all roads with basic cruise control systems which are limited to highways.

Not sure why dude was freaking out in LA traffic with Blue Cruise. He should have lowered the cruise control limit so there wouldn't be such a difference in speed between his left lane driving and the center lane.

Tesla AutoPilot recognizes large speed difference w/ neighboring lanes (eg HOV fast vs slow lane) and will reduce speed a bit to be safer... you can override w/ single push on accelerator

Full Self Driving software is in BETA. being in the beta program means you are subjected to bugs and issues as you provide feedback and training for Tesla to use to make the system safer. It's not flawless at all, but anybody driving it for a few months can see obvious progress improvements. I have been using FSD Beta since October 2021, so about 2 years now and it is CRAZY how much it has improved in 2 years. It's very clear to see that in the relatively near future, it will reach a point where it can drive at least AS SAFE as a human in any environment. From that point on, it will continue to improve until it drives at a level that is MUCH safer than a human. as technology gets better, higher resolution camers get cheaper, and Tesla is able to obtain more video data to train the systems on, FSD software will eventually become much much much safer than a human. At this point, it will be considered more dangerous to have a human driving than a computer. I can't wait until that happens because it will save thousands of lives a year.

Self-driving cars discourage or decrease the frequency of driving experience. Imagine how much less practice drivers of the future will have when it comes to basic skills like lane changes, merging, and following in traffic.

Ive seen other videos on youtube with Teslas with FSD and they don't have to give any input at all during the trip. Maybe those users are on newer versions not avalible to everyone yet. There's many FSD hands free videos out there mostly in model S/X models

This is simply stupid to compare FSD beta with other (that are basically advance cruise controls). FSD is 100 times more capable system then in other cars, Other cars will never be able to acheive what Tesla has already acheived unless they change how they are programming their autonomous system, which is to rely on data and AI instead of telling the car what to do. They never told (program) tesla what Road sign means and how it should react but it learn itself based on the data.

I have the Tesla Model Y LR and have 3 months of FSD Beta and at best, it's like having a 16 year old with their learner's permit driving you around. These systems are supposed to make things stress free for you and it's the exact opposite for me. When my 3 months are up, there's no way I'd spend $12K to get the full package. If I had money to burn, I would, but even when it gets me where I want to go, it's so stressful that I need a cigarette after, and I don't even smoke! What's the point?
