- Which is better anime movie sub or dub for Howl's Moving Castle? English DUB or the Japanese SUB. Sophie has an uneventful life at her late father's hat shop, but all that changes when she befriends wizard Howl, who lives in a magical flying castle. However, the evil Witch of Waste takes issue with their budding relationship and casts a spell on young Sophie, which ages her prematurely. Now Howl must use all his magical talents to battle the jealous hag and return Sophie to her former youth and beauty.
japanese howl sounds more playful and boyish, english howl sounds more gentleman-y but brooding... i think they bring out sides that both exist in howl

The reason why Hayao Miyazaki asked the voice actor to Takuya Kimura who used to be the Most famous top idol and actor in Japan is that Miyazaki wanted Howl’s voice acted by the man who was born to be star and spend his whole life as a handsome man. Feels like same goes to Cristian Bale for English dub
Young/old Sophie’s dub fits her pretty well.
The English dub is surprisingly good especially Sofie's but Japanese will always be the best

I consider the Japanese dub to be better. Movies always gets a certain flare when they're in their original language, doesn't need to be English everywhere.

I honestly like the dub version better. It’s rare to see. But for some reason the dubbed voice actors have more emotion to me

I have so much appreciation for both the English dub, and the Original Japanese! I grew up with the English dub, and this is the first time hearing their voices in Japanese, and while they're so different, they both suit the characters so well, I'm so amazed!!
(Honestly though I like Calcifers voice in English better though, I don't understand Japanese, so I can hear the sarcasm and all that much better in English, it's really funny lol)

As a Japanese, I feel more comfortable with the Japanese version.
As someone who usually prefers dubs, I can't disagree. I kept watching this in JP version bcs it somehow sounds natural to me. For some reason, I find the ENG version to be bland..(or maybe bcs I just loved Calcifer's energy in the ENG one lol)

I have to say I prefer the sub ^^; As much as I love "That's my girl" 👀 I feel like the japanese voice adds a more boy-ish and lively charm to Howl, a different side of him. I like that mixture :) Young Sophies voice is also more stern and stubborn in the original imo. And Calcifer has this really squeaky voice I love it
Yeah Christian Bale's voice acting sounded incredibly one dimensional for pretty much the entire film. Like excitement was distilled down into just speaking slightly more enthusiastically in the same tone.
@@Corzappy I see what you mean. I may be biased though, I generally just prefer sub over dub, I feel like it can capture more what the directors wanted us to hear. I don't know much about dub, but I'm guessing the voice direction is from a different team? So it doesn't always capture the mood the same way.

Calcifer sounds like a frog in japanese. Sophie still sounds young in japanese. Little boy sounds like little boy in both, but I like the voices of the kids in all of Ghibli’s movies in japanese.
The English old Sophie is better for me because it matches he oldness

Both are good but I really prefer the English dub, more emotions in its voice and it has an accent I love the most. Idk why but that accent really attracts me. Also Howls voice in the English dub is also my favorite one. I always wanna have that kind of voice. Like Deep raspy yet sweet voice

OMG how did Howl's turned into Batman 0:05 ?😂 That was wayyyy too brooding for his character. I knew instantly it was Christian Bale from their voice. Might as well be his audition for Batman Begins.
I really like how they localized it into English. Direct translation just would not work.

Definitely not the only time, especially when it comes to Ghibli movies. Japanese dubs in Ghibli movies sound quite weak compared to their English counterparts, which is a bit strange ngl.
Also, there are plenty of other productions where the English version is better than the Japanese, but I'd say Japanese versions are generally better.
In spirited away I found the dub to fit the characters voices better than sub

oh to me she sounds heart wrenched. like the way her voice strains at the end when she speaks.
I feel so too- I think in the jp her voice sounds more stubborn and fierce in contrast to the dub, where her voice is a lot calmer, more shy. I feel like the japanese version brings out a whole different person/ vibe which I just really enjoy.
That's how I feel about most of the English dub, especially with Sophie and even Howl which is why it baffles me that so many people like it and even prefer it to the Japanese version. To me, the Japanese voice actors and have so much more emotion and inflection

no one can top kimura-sans howl for me. Christian bales is far too deep, I think kimura adds a soft yet intimidating aura to howl that fits perfectly.
English dub is better
I’m Japanese and I actually dislike Sofi’s voice in Japanese. The dubbed version sounds great but Calcifer should have sounded a bit cuter 😭😭😭 🔥
