Anyone else come here after finding out that Moro’s Japanese track was voiced by a drag queen? I always thought her voice sounded really masculine and now I know why
Holy shit. I listened a bit to the original Japanese version a very long time ago, but I didn’t realize how different a direction the English dub went for Moro
Agreed on San's voice, I think the original worked better for the character (including some of the differences in their lines), but I have to admit to being a bit partial to English Moro; left an impression on me as a kid.
It is very rare, nay not a damn eng dubbed sounds very close to that of the original sub. Princess Mononoke is the only animation film where both dub and sub sounded very close. Now that is doing it justice. Both were really good. We will never have another dubbed animation that sounds close to sub ever again in future animation.
I wouldn't say immaculate, but it is very good. I think Billy Bob Thornton sounds very out of place and his delivery varies from rushed, flat or bored. He genuinely sounds like he went into the studio to get that shit over with.
3:34 eng dub "i'm a friend" original "i don't wanna fight with you." 3:45 eng dub "listen to me" original "To retreat is also courage. Go back to the forest!" That's not accurate.
lines are changed to match up with the mouths. They still do their best to portray the same intent as the original. he does also say "I don't want to fight with you, it's just in a different place in his lines, which, if youve studied Japanese at all, you know that things are often said backwards of how we would normally say them).
Keith David. Absolutely LEGENDARY voice actor. Among his many roles, he’s also Captain Anderson in the Mass Effect series and is the current voice of Commander Zavala in Destiny 2 after Lance Reddick (another PHENOMENAL talent) sadly passed away.
Japanese people have perfected the art of voice acting. There is a truth to every word they say and they immerse their voices into the characters' environments with such conviction. Not to say English dub is all around bad but Princess Mononoke's English dub sounded flat and inauthentic. Especially San's voice actor. There was no emotion behind her words and she sounded like she was just reading off of a script. I've watched the movie twice. The first time in Japanese and the second time in English. I seem to have enjoyed the movie less the second time around.
This is common. You've created an attachment to an amazing film through the first watching. It'll always be slightly jarring to switch to different voices, much like watching a film adaptation of a book you've read. Whilst I agree Japanese voice acting is phenomenal (I prefer to watch Japanese subs of anime), being as objective as possible, the production of the Neil Gaimon dub is very, very good.
Just watched the dub and it’s pretty good but some voices are a bit dumb. Ashi’s voice for example is good in places and flat in others, like whenever he’s yelling at people he sounds like he’s holding back to not blow out his microphone. Jogo’s English voice is really fun but he kinda lacks emotional difference in serious situations. The wolves are dumb except for moro, her voice is cool to listen to.
The Engine dub is still very impressive but the Japanese sub has 1400's Japanese period dialect from the Kansai regional dialects like Kyoto, Osaka, and Nara from the Sengoku jidai 1455 to 1555 C.E.
There is no need to compare. Japanese is clearly better. Princess Mononoke is set in medieval Japan and old Japanese spoken by the characters reflects the historical background. Foreigners probably won't appreciate this old Japanese.
I usually prefer subbed but this is one of those instances where the dub is better imo although both are great. It's Moro's voice in dubbed that's got it beat
I recommend you to watch this scene in Russian voice acting. In it, San's voice is more like a girl, and she is more emotional in accordance with the image
one of the few exeption from my hatred against dubs. Here the english one sometimes sounds even better than the japanese and thats something to be proud of
Sorry but the English dub is FAR superior. You can really see the difference with Moro and Okkoto. Gillian Anderson and Keith David absolutely crushed it.
The English version has far better audio mixing, more convincing voice acting and the dialogue is surprisingly more natural and believable (at least when compared to the English subtitles based on the Japanese version). Honestly, the people involved in this English dub did a great job, even better than the Japanese dub. But I think it's already a given considering this was distributed by Disney.
3:14 my god that laugh is amazing, it's difficult to get a convincing laugh like that

I love Moro's voice in the Japanese so much 😭❤
Fun fact the jp voice actor for Moro is a very influential drag queen in the japanese drag scene.
@@Shinryu949 Akihiro Miwa?

@@planetx1595 yes!
Same and also sounds gender neutral/etc., too?
This is one of the only dubs I actually prefer over sub. The VAs and sound designers all did an EXCELLENT job with this movie
all of the miyazaki dubs are done with care!
Pretty good (I’m Japanese) but I wish San and Moro’s voices in English were closer to the original Japanese version. 🥲Everyone else sounds 🤟🏻 though!
Agreed on San's voice, I think the original worked better for the character (including some of the differences in their lines), but I have to admit to being a bit partial to English Moro; left an impression on me as a kid.
Moro's Japanese voice didn't suit her
It is very rare, nay not a damn eng dubbed sounds very close to that of the original sub. Princess Mononoke is the only animation film where both dub and sub sounded very close. Japanese is best in my opinion especially Moro, she sounds like she is truly wounded and suffering.
Have to disagree. Their voice really took me out of it. Gillian Anderson’s is far superior.
English dub actually knocks it out of the park. it’s immaculate
Thank god bc I’m watching it in dub in theaters and was nervous it was gonna be terrible…
I wouldn't say immaculate, but it is very good. I think Billy Bob Thornton sounds very out of place and his delivery varies from rushed, flat or bored. He genuinely sounds like he went into the studio to get that shit over with.
@@HarbingerLand hahahha after seeing the movie yea his delivery wasnt the best but still great!
No it's not lol.

I love how Joe DiMaggio is featured in every Ghibli dub
Gillian Anderson as Moro is *muah*

Yeah. It's common. Mostly done to fit the audience.

Hayao Miyazaki made a great movie. Neil Gaiman helped to make it even greater.

I’m sorry I love subs, but Minnie Driver killed that
I really prefer the Japanese original dub.
Akihiro Miwa is Moro’s voice in japanese
Before Gloria jada pinkett smith voiced toki 2:46
Nago's voice in english is perfect..
Keith David may voice a boar, but he’s 100% the goat.

Am I missing something or is the sub actually not there
it's just comparing the voice acting, so you don't really need the subs for that.

How are we comparing anything without the actual subtitles

I’m always gonna be with the Dubs.
Yeah I said it,
Id rather the original language with English subs, but some dubs are ok
Is this the dubbing from which the Latin American dubbing was based?
do you know what a "SUB" is?
What could I watch English dub on?? Howls moving castle I had to watch sub, anyone know?
Idk why but I love Eng Dub better

I prefer the English dub over the Japanese. It’s like Cowboy Bebop imo. I find the English dub of both to be better.

I always thought that Jada's voice sounded way too hood and out of place in this.
