I always thought of my own family whenever I heard this song. My Dad's name is Joe. His sister is my "Aunt Sarah", and my cousins always referred to my dad as "Uncle Joe". While not his most famous of songs, this in my opinion, is one of Seger's all time best. It still sounds as awesome as it did when it came out on FM Radio back in the day and was a hit when it first came out and played on the radio quite a bit. This will probably be a controversial comment, but there are few musicians in the "rock and roll" genre that can top Seger for his raw sound and just great music.
Freedom to fulfill a want, to have fun and do as you please. So far removed from this shrunk present. The first time I heard this song I was driving from Pomona, California to Reseda to see my now deceased brother. Life was in front of me, in front of all of us, with this man singing such a beautiful testament.
Underrated Bob Seger's faded out song. Most of Bob Seger's songs are faded out at the end, like this one, Fire Lake, You're Accompanied Me, Still The Same, Roll Me Away, Breakdown, You're A Rock, Hollywood Nights, and Ramlin' Gamblin' Man.
Uncle Joe... the one who was afraid to the cut the cake. I remember being about 3 years old and picking out that lyric when this was playing on the radio. I had no idea the song was about freedom and bikes... but I did kinda think at that age it had to be a wedding cake he wouldn't cut.
I've always heard that the Eagles were the backup band on the song. I was going to ask if that's true. But hearing it now, it's clear that it couldn't be anybody else. Kind of like when Sting sings on Money for Nothing
Fire lake in the upper pet ofichigan so cross the bggest bridge then go north when ya see Indians and Eskimos to can go back to Texas or callironia???????? Why ya going to my state
On this date in 1980 {Feb. 23rd} "Fire Lake" entered Billboard's Top 100 chart; evenually it peaked at #6 and spent 16 weeks in the Top 100... Ranked 67th on Billboard's Year-End Hot 100 Singles of 1980 chart... Reached #4 on the Canadian Singles chart Glenn Frey, Don Henley and Timothy B. Schmit of The Eagles sang back-up on this record...
When I hear this song, I'm immediately in a room of uncles (all men dads age), dad, and ladies with bell-bottoms in the back yard laughing and drinking... while I was about 5 yrs old (even remebering details) of the turquoise lined "Buffalo Nickle" roach clip..that passed before me- (can anyone say contact high!) How stange it is. But a warning! *I grew up with pot smoke and 70's music, & when I was older, the smell of weed and a Skynard song, brought comfort. This shall not be our girls fate!..
Makes me think of my short, bald Uncle Joe who never road a motorcycle in his life. My dad (who sold his bike when I was about 2 -- I don't remember it but there's a picture of me sitting on it with him) would listen to this song and I was so little I thought it was about my Uncle Joe. Today every last one of my uncles would be labeled "toxic males" because they didn't take any sh--, bikes or no bikes, and my dad's generation is the one that settled down, traded in their GTO's for fuel efficient Datsun's in deference to placate their wives and girlfriends.
For me this song is about the great trip that awaits us after this one...Something so beautiful that it makes you cry tears of joy and laugh like hell.

Memories as a little kid.. Uncle Ronnie, Big Floyd, Black Milton, my dad.. Wild little kid with all the freedom in the world. They would give me five bucks to buy them cigs down the street at the Stop n Go ( 4 packs of Winston 100's)in Houston, Tx. and I could keep the change.. Unheard of these days... brings me straight back to simpler times.I miss it.
When he said uncle Joe was afraid to cut the cake. Does it mean he was afraid to get married? I've always loved this song and would love to know more about the song.
That is because it is. Well, three of the Eagles anyways. Timothy B Schmidt, Don Henley and Glenn Frey. May be one of the reasons why this is one of my favorite Bob Seger songs.
And yet there was up to about 30 years ago a chance during the formative years of all American youth in 95% of the country (the other 5% being the big cities) to go to "the" Lake... some un-owned, un-secured, un-surveilled place out past the town lines where the air was too clean, the water was too cold and the people were too free. I recall the day when I went to my "Fire Lake" and the old dirt road on the property where you went in was blocked off by somebody who had either bought it and "claimed" it, or was scared into ending the party by insurance men and headlines of litigousness gone wild. So we slowly became a tame country of women who are afraid to go out in the sun, and men who were hen pecked by all forms of authority into never swimming without a lifeguard on duty, never jumping off the cliff just to prove you could do what the other guys were doing (not for digital likes from a bunch of arm-chair wanna-be's), and they mostly never learned to break rules when there nobody was being victimized. Now we are turning into a completely different culture. Now nature is regulated and surveilled, and access doled out jealously by the overbearing nanny-state. If you merely cast your eyes on a "bronze beauty" without permission, forget about whistle or make a cat call, you are a bad guy. Now Joe doesn't dream about going off to fire lake where the cool people are. He doesn't even have the heart to take the cover off his bike.
Nice summary of the lyrics. I loved this song the first time I heard it but it took years for me to figure out what the hell they were talking about ✌️
Hi All, Uncle Joe here, ya'll be happy to know that after 3 years of intensive therapy I am now able to cut the cake. Except carrot cake, f*ck that shit

Seger says it’s about a lake he knows of... I forget the real name of the lake, but if you google it, you will see what the man said about this song and it’s meaning or what lake he was singing about. Good music...
shootermav11 When he first wrote the song it was called Spirit Lake, oddly enough the producers insisted he call the song Fire Lake. They said it would sell better. Who wants to go to Fire Lake? Not me
Well, Seger stated himself the song is about taking a gamble, walking out on your loved ones, chucking it all out and running off with a wild crowd. As far as interpreting the “Fire Lake” references? This is really left up to your own interpretation. To me? It’s a metaphorical place where all the cheaters, runners, “gypsies”, loose women, gamblers, and scoundrels go. I guess, it could just as well be about the lake of fire in hell. But because uncle joe ran out on aunt Sarah, doesn’t mean he couldn’t later seek redemption. To me it’s just a metaphor for a stage in life that these people go.

Bob Seger is a master of great music, but Fire Lake is my absolute favorite...!! We always play this song on our family vacations to the Lake...!!
Hands down still the best concert for me. I still have my ticket stub. I feel very lucky to have grown up in the 70's.

Whenever I'm on my Harley on a long trip I keep looking for Fire Lake, and I always just miss the turn. One day.
I think hes talking about the dreaded lake of fire. It makes sense since most musicians were and are sellouts and worship satan. It sux but its true.

Thanks for saving your girls from Free Bird. But don't save them from Fire Lake 🙇🏼♀️
Out of the corner of my eye, I sometimes see Fire Lake flash briefly in the rearview mirror, especially at night when the air is really still...

great song but he is playing it too fast. Play it at 75 percent and you have a Neil Young song.
When he said uncle Joe was afraid to cut the cake. Does it mean he was afraid to get married? I've always loved this song and would love to know more about the song.

Great lyrics...its what you want them to be. Risk, sin, paradise, cheating or maybe just giving it all up and leaving. For Fire Lake.

There actually is a lake called Fire Lake in Iron County, Michigan, where Bob Seger grew up.
