As a developer, I'd like to note that the year counter increments in an interesting way but makes sense if thought about as a string concatenation. The reason you see 21000 instead of 3000 is because the game's year counter at the start of the game is NOT 2287. The year at the beginning of the game is 287. Why? Because the game concatenates the year counter onto "2". This ultimately gives you the representation of the year at the beginning of the game as "2" + "year" or "2" + "287" or 2287. Once you get to what we would naturally consider the year 3000, and the game's "year" counter reaches 1000, we are given the same formula for the representation: "2" + "year" or "2" + "1000" or 21000. As for why Bethesda decided to record and display the game year this way, I cannot say. I am simply trying to shed some light on how it is done.
Easy answer to why. Is to limit the number of bits it was using and further to limit risk of overflow....wich they failed to do properly with leveling so game crashes when you level up to many times.
@@theendofit point still stands. 2287 divides into the max 32 bit integer 938995 times. 2287 is a small number compared to max int. It's a weird way to deal with overflow
You'll eventually run into a Garvey descendant who will undoubtedly send you off to save yet another settlement under attack. He'll mark it on your map.
Technically, if there were enough atomic blasts all across the world, it could potentially have some type of effect on time. Maybe not 30+ more days a month, but there might be something to the effect of 27-30 hours a day.
_Why_ would atomic blasts change the rotational period of the earth around the sun or increase its angular velocity? There is not enough power in all nuclear weapons combined to meaningfully alter any of those. Perhaps by a few measly _milliseconds_ if you're lucky but probably not even that.
Charanor I might retract the 27-30 hours a day statement from my comment. As I kind of misinterpreted the information in my head. It would actually make days faster. If you look back to 2011/2012 (i believe it was 2011) when Japan was hit by that massive 9.0 magnitude earthquake and then tsunami, it actually made Earth’s days shorter. Granted, by 1.8 microseconds, but still. If we apply that with nukes, I’m sure enough nukes would change Earths days by minute amounts. So completely contrary to my comment, if there were enough blasts our days could theoretically become shorter.
@@professorpoopydiaper988 Macs are good. My MacBook Pro runs Stranded Deep at a resolution higher than the display can show. I have all of the textures on ultra as well as the water. I also use my MacBook Pro for music production. It powers my studio. It supports multiple displays and massive CPU loads. It's a truly amazing machine. I know Macs are not the best gaming machines, as they were not built for gaming. I'd rather game on a Razer blade, or a Project Valerie, if Razer decides to release them.
Damn, I don't know why, but this video hit me in the feels. Got me thinking about how time just keeps marching on. People come and go, generations come and go, and everything we have ever known can come and go. It's incredible, yet scary.
Well Bethesda did say that fallout and the elder scrolls are in the same universe and someone wanted to proof that and found a certain plant so in theory fallout is a prequel to Skyrim
I always find that the speed of a game's day/night cycle can really reduce immersion. GTA5 was the first time I really noticed. I gave a guy a lift to the airport. It took all day. We must've been driving at 5mph.
Far cry 4 has a terrible day night cycle, based on the movement of your analogue sticks, so if u wanted to wait til morning or night while scoping a base out you couldnt just rest the controller for 5 mins, you would have to move the camera constantly for time to pass, and sometimes made nighttime feel twice as long as daytime
The farming sim games handle time scale well, you can set it from real time to 120x with certain variables in between. Real time helps it become a simulator, i can't argue with that
This was kind of weirdly beautiful at parts. Watching the world pass by at different speeds just made me put myself into the main characters shoes a but. Imagine just sitting there witnessing the world for years, decades even. Something about that feels so melancholy to me
It's just like real life. The world around you flashes at disco speed while you stand basically in stasis doing repetitive tasks that offer very little in the way of fulfillment or personal growth for money. There's an occasional jarring break for major life events. You are aware that there is more to life, but it is unreachable, a kaleidoscope mirage projected onto the back of your mind. Then one day you wake up and you recognize neither the world nor yourself. Things probably get very strange indeed once you outlive your own capacity for growth.

Richard Head - true but the CNPP was a far more concentrated blast than the fallout that has scattered into most of the wasteland. Some blast craters will still be smoking but the smaller pockets should be gone. Upon reflection, I really should've worded my original comment better tbh but that's what happens at 3 AM. LOL.
No you're right, if the fallout world was an air blast detonation, it reduces the radiation that gets scattered about. Ground detonation kick up more dirt and dust and while in air those particles collect radiation and it buries it into the ground as the dust settles, causing it to last longer. Free floating radiation fades away quicker. Look at Hiroshima as an example. It was an air burst, and little radiation is found today. And that's coming from me at 4 am lol
Richard Head maybe if the source of radiation stays there called elephants foot or something but im pretty sure we will clear it out when it weakens if animals can live there it shows its getting weaker
Why would anything change? Nothing in the game is time-based (does your Pip-boy even show the date?). All NPC's will still be in the same place, the same quests will still be available.
This sounds like the game year is displayed as "the number 2" concatenated by the year represented with "at least 3 digits" (so if the year internal value is 30, it would display "2030", 999 being "2999" and 1000 becoming "21000"). Programming is hard, they probably never expected anyone to play for that long. It's not like it's going to break the game to display some date wrong. Edit: I came to this conclussion because of the date "21054" at the timestamp 6:00. Really seems like the game jumped from 2999 to 21000 and continued a little bit forward.
+99batran Gotta remember, ghouls slowly but surely go feral. The lore confirms that even without radiation to further damage their bodies and minds, they will eventually lose them. It's only a matter of time.

I think it relies on which faction you go with. For example, if you go with minutemen and blow up the institute, that also means the minutemen gets stronger as a faction and therefore recruit new members, which turns into more patrols and eventually more area control. The same should happen with the brotherhood, but not quite sure about the railroad or the institute

@@theendofit I'm not sure I agree. Removing a single digit of such a small number would be an ineffective and weird way at dealing with overflow.
@@96Nickylee in binary it's closer to ten digits.
@@theendofit point still stands. 2287 divides into the max 32 bit integer 938995 times. 2287 is a small number compared to max int. It's a weird way to deal with overflow

I should also add that I have no scientific knowledge in the subject, these are just thoughts.
Rest in power man, just heard the news

Well Bethesda did say that fallout and the elder scrolls are in the same universe and someone wanted to proof that and found a certain plant so in theory fallout is a prequel to Skyrim
I always find that the speed of a game's day/night cycle can really reduce immersion. GTA5 was the first time I really noticed. I gave a guy a lift to the airport. It took all day. We must've been driving at 5mph.
That's why I set timescale in Fallout 4 to 1 in-game minute is 1 minute IRL.
Horizon zero dawn has maybe the dumbest day night cycle. it literally takes about 15 seconds for it to go from broad daylight to complete nighttime.
The farming sim games handle time scale well, you can set it from real time to 120x with certain variables in between. Real time helps it become a simulator, i can't argue with that
But is that... IMMERSIVE?!
This was kind of weirdly beautiful at parts. Watching the world pass by at different speeds just made me put myself into the main characters shoes a but. Imagine just sitting there witnessing the world for years, decades even. Something about that feels so melancholy to me
Seems like a fate that an anime character would face lol, like the soul king from bleach.

After 1000 years you'd think that the radiation would be gone, LOL.
MinionOfDeth2112 Chernobyl will still be radioactive in 20000 years
Richard Head - true but the CNPP was a far more concentrated blast than the fallout that has scattered into most of the wasteland.
Richard Head no it wont lmao
Richard Head maybe if the source of radiation stays there called elephants foot or something but im pretty sure we will clear it out when it weakens if animals can live there it shows its getting weaker

Well, would they know the previous location of the Institute in C.I.T?
I think it relies on which faction you go with. For example, if you go with minutemen and blow up the institute, that also means the minutemen gets stronger as a faction and therefore recruit new members, which turns into more patrols and eventually more area control. The same should happen with the brotherhood, but not quite sure about the railroad or the institute
