    Great explanation! Another fun fact is that, when checking the answer by making the calculation, the value on both sides equals the Y value of the graph intersection. So both results are shown in the graph to check afterwards:)

Now I'm being thrust into sink or swim mode with a math class covering linear equations, and another covering pre-calc. Your video is the most succinct I've found. Hello! I can't keep my selection in Y2. I can only graph the first equation. Even is I select the equal sign and press enter, when I press "graph" I can see only the first equation and when I'm back to Y= the equal sign for Y2 is not selected. How can I fix that? Can you help me? :)

    • @philaciousnessicity
      @philaciousnessicity  6 років тому

      Just to be clear, an option is "selected" if it has a black outline with white lettering. Be sure that both of your Y1 and Y2 equal signs look like this. Another thing to check are the plots at the top of the Y= menu. Be sure that none of them are selected either. You can get to those by pressing the UP arrow key from the Y1 position.

    • @anaclaramathiasmoreira3257
      @anaclaramathiasmoreira3257 6 років тому

      Thanks for the quick reply! Yes, both equal signs are selected when I press [Graph], but then only y1 is shown, and when I return to [y=], y2 is not selected anymore. Nothing at the top is selected. What I noticed is that instead of the backward slash before the equations (y1, y2, etc) there is like a "forward" symbol, and when I select that to edit, I can only change that to "fast forward" or "play" symbols. I don't know how to have the slashes again. I believe that would solve the problem.

    • @philaciousnessicity
      @philaciousnessicity  6 років тому

      Those are alternate lines to display. The order is: thin line, thick line, shade above (greater than), shade below (less than), trace while graphing, trace path w/o graphing line, and dotted line. If you only have a circle there, that would be an issue. Keep pressing "ENTER" on the icon to the left of Y2 until a thin, connected line appears. It should match the default in the others (Y3, Y4, etc.) Another option is the window isn't large enough (zoomed correctly) to view both equations. I recommend pressing "ZOOM" then selecting option 0 (ZoomFit). See if those help. It's difficult without being able to play with it ;)

    • @philaciousnessicity
      @philaciousnessicity  4 роки тому

      Yes, but since the basic graphers (TI-83/84, 82, 85, 86, 73) can't really do algebra (no CAS), you'll just need to convert whichever letter you have to an "x". Then pop it in, solve it, and resubstitute your original letter in.

    • @philaciousnessicity

      In this calculator, you don't solve it any other way. There is no Computer Algebra System installed. You could change the nature of the problem and use matrices, but that's even more complicated. To solve this though, you don't use the equal sign of the calculator...that does something else.

    • @philcollins2595
      @philcollins2595 8 років тому

      +bodyworkz My first thought is that you're looking for the answer 8 * x^9 * y^15 using rules for exponent manipulation. If that's the case, I'm sorry, but the TI-83/84 will not work through problems of that type. You need a CAS (Computer Algebra System) for that capability. The TI-89/92/Voyager as well as the TI-NSpire CAS have that ability.
      The best the TI-83/84 can do is check your answer using numbers...put your original expression in (2 * x^3 * y^5)^3, press the "2nd" key and "math" for the "TEST" menu. Select the "=" option by pressing "1" or "Enter". Finally, put what you think the answer is...for example 8 * x^9 * y^15. Press "Enter"...if the answer is a 0, it's false, and your expansion is incorrect. If it's a 1, it's true, and you've found the answer. That's the best it has without some additional programming/apps.
