    I highly recommend the new animated Superman movie called "Man of Tomorrow" its a movie about Clarks human upbringing, how it conflicts with his alien origins and how his failure to save human lives at the beginning of his superhero career motivates him to become better.

    One scene I would change, would be rather gasoline tanker being thrown at Clark by Zodd, instead of jumping over it, he takes the hit, because taking the hit is what Superman/Clark would do. His actions are not about stopping Zodd, they are about saving lives. Stopping the villain over saving lives is more up Batman's ally, but even in that case there is argument that can be made that Batman prioritizing stopping the bad guy over saving lives is out of character

    I think the point of Superman in MoS doing many "destructive" and "reckless" things is because he is Superman for no longer than 24h. Like, literally, not even 36 hours passed since him getting the suit and going all out testing his powers for the first time to his first actual death battle against other super beings. In BvS you can clearly see he is much more calculated and confident in where and how much he uses his abilities.

  • @kostasz7z

    I think you re right and this was a very good presentation/analysis but its easy to see the mistakes after the movie was finished.
    MoS is still a great movie and typically underrated.
    The more realistic and cynical approach for this movie makes it even better.
    The lighter tone and more comedic approach of the Christopher Reeves era woudlnt work today and i personally think its laughable and will render a movie cartoonish. It works for animation but not for live action films.

    I definitely did not like this movie. Your fixes we're fantastic.
    Maybe in that tornado scene, John Kents tells Clark to save as many people as possible and get everyone safe. But in the process, John is in trouble and dies while Clark is helping others. It teaches the value of saving others while teaching Clark that he can't save everyone like a traditional Superman story. Just a thought.

    Center row, its been a year but after re-watch the film and your video, I will like to add another aspect to the film in conjunction to your film fix. for starters it was weird how Clark just simply become a journalist without actually studying the profession to begin with. The best way would be if Clark in the flashback actually did journalism studies at a small college in Smallville to understand more about humanity and try a different way to fit in but drops out to pursue his journey to find the answers to his alien origin. Then after he snaps Zod's neck the prologue would be him quitting being superman and living a normal life as a journalist but starts from the bottom as Lois sort of intern and works his way up. His father and Lois try to convince him to come back as superman but he isn't convinced until he sees the survives who saved him and how he made an impact during Zod's attack. will also transition well with BVS.

    I very much like the fixes you propose. I will only say that there seems to be a separation between the fixed film you propose and the criticisms to the one we got, at least in some ways. For example, there is no need for Clark Kent to be as inherently a good guy as Captain America always was. Instead, as perhaps suggested by this film where we see him grow up in a certain environment, he later became this super good guy we all know and look up to. So, while your suggested alternate version does seem more interesting to me, that does not make the film we got lacking. The premise that Clark has always been the nicest of guys is perhaps something they decided not to go with, and there is nothing wrong with that. In fact, if it helps justify the slightly darker tone of the film, I'm all for it! Awesome channel btw! Found it today and it was an instant sub!

    • @CenterRow

      I don't feel he needs to be as nice as Captain America, but I felt Clark was just kinda harsh and a little selfish at points in the movie, I feel no matter how dark you make a Superman movie, Clark has to remain an inherently good guy or he's not really Superman.

      I like the idea of a flawed Superman, but he has a cynical edge to him in this movie that rubs me the wrong way. Like when Zod is experiencing the effects of Earth's atmosphere and he smiles and says to Zod "it hurts, doesn't it?", or when he says "Krypton had its chance" before blowing up the ship, or when he says "I don't know if humanity is worth saving". It all gives him this judgemental, harsh personality that I feel clashes with who Superman is as a character. Like having a Punisher movie where Punisher is a nice guy who doesn't kill people, it just kind of misses the point imho.

      Not exactly. He is good at things that arent complex. Look at 300. ThaT movie is basicly "fighting and punching" but everyone loves it because the action it's directed really well and the movie also looks great. Then look at something like Man of Steel, BvS he doesnt know how these charaters work so what he did he do? Man of Steel it's basicly a 20 minute flashback on Krypton, followed by a boring middle part where superman starts to become a hero and then an one hour battle. He skips the most important part, the character part. In 300 you dont really need complex characters or something like this, in superhero movies you need to at least care about the characters.

    Adaptations are tough. Especially of US Superhero comics. All you can really do is hit a few established plot points and keep the characters true to who they are.
    Which Snyder failed at. He’s clearly never read a Superman comic and has even directly gone against the character’s philosophy in interviews.
    He has no interest in making a movie of who superman is but rather who he wishes superman was.

    I never interpreted Jonathan Kent dying as being pointless. I always saw it has him sacrificing himself so Clark could live through the shoes of a normal person before he made the decision of revealing himself to the world. It's showing him that just because he's got superhuman abilities doesn't mean he can or should get whatever he wants. I don't think Superman would've been willing to sacrifice himself in BvS had he not witnessed that.
    Although I understand why someone might want that scene tinkered with I still think it's important for the person who made this video to not completely misinterpret the point of this key scene lol.

    • @UltimateKyuubiFox
      @UltimateKyuubiFox 4 роки тому +2

      The problem is this isn’t well established in the film. Their argument in the car might hint at this being the point, but Pa Kent’s attitude about it is so flimsy and contradictory that it never coheres into a salient argument.

    • @satanclaus1693
      @satanclaus1693 4 роки тому +1

      UltimateKyuubiFox I'd agree with you about that, however, the examples he lists are not good replacements that share the same message. Picking up a hitchhiker to show that Clark needs a good moral compass is not the same message as Clark needing to understand humility, free will, and the price of sacrifice.
      The scene is not perfect, however, I believe it's not hard to read between the lines of that scene either. You cant just "fix" the movie when there's a failure to understand the themes of the movie.

    • @UltimateKyuubiFox
      @UltimateKyuubiFox 4 роки тому +1

      Satan Claus If the film failed convey the themes, that’s hardly the fault of the critic-much less their job to do the heavy lifting themselves. The thing about Zack Snyder’s DC movies is that it’s very easy for people to read anything they want into them. The scripts are just vague and obtuse enough that they demand active viewers to do all the legwork of inserting meaning and subtext themselves. The base reading of the sequence is that, after telling Clark throughout his childhood both that he should maybe let other kids drown to stay hidden but also that he’s here for an important reason, Pa Kent now tells Clark that he should be proud to stay on the farm like a normal person and also should let his own father die. Pa Kent’s message to his son is so confused that it doesn’t convey much of anything. Only “Listen to me because I’m your father.” Why did Pa Kent want to keep his son out of the limelight? Because he’s too young? Well, they use Henry Cavill for the scene, so he just looks like an adult finally ready to fulfill his weighty responsibilities. Would Clark EVER be ready in Pa Kent’s eyes? We have no idea. We don’t even know what he thinks his son should use his powers FOR. None of if makes any coherent sense because none of it clicks together toward a common purpose. So his sacrifice is literally for nothing. Center Row, in essence, is having to imbibe his own meaning onto the text, much like you have. And yet you assume both that Center Row is refusing to engage with the text, while also presuming your engagement with the text is concrete and undeniable. But the trap here is that this is all subjective conjecture.

    • @satanclaus1693
      @satanclaus1693 4 роки тому

      UltimateKyuubiFox It's really not that hard to read into what the film is obviously saying. Jonathan Kent spends the entire movie telling Clark that he might be "different" and he has a massive responsibility, but that Clark just as human as he is ("you are my son"). He also emphasizes free will and the power of choice ("whatever that man is good character or bad...").
      I know people love mentioning the bus scene but that's clearly a very important moment to humanize Jonathan. He's not bestowed with infinite knowledge. When he's posed with a moral question like that, he isn't sure what the answer is. Wanna know why? Because it's clear (especially from BvS) that the world has a lot of darkness in it. He wants Clark to be old enough to realize the weight of his actions and understand the meaning of loss and sacrifice before he becomes Superman - which is why he sacrificed himself in the tornado.
      And to your point about Jonathan wondering if he would ever be ready - of course he does. Hell, one of the final scenes in the movie is Martha telling Clark that Jonathan DID see Clark eventually becoming that beacon of hope (the scene where young Clark is running around with the cape).
      I don't think the writing in Man of Steel is "obtuse" at all. It's actually pretty straightforward. Just because you didn't get it the first time you watched it doesn't mean the writing is bad. I literally used dialogue straight from the movie lol

  • @mattboy2313
    @mattboy2313 4 роки тому +1

    While I like your alternate version of this movie, I'm going to make the argument that Superman in Man of Steel as is is completely fine. Let me explain. You see, what Zack Snyder was going for wasn't supposed to be the definitive take on the character for this universe. Throughout Man of Steel and Batman v Superman, Snyder was showing us a younger, more vulnerable Clark who's still struggling with his powers and unsure of his ideals, while at the same time having to constantly deal with a world that criticizes and demonizes his actions, hence why he's a lot gloomier than usual. This Superman's main arc was about becoming the Superman we know he's supposed.

  • @technicallyturtles7148
    @technicallyturtles7148 4 роки тому +1

    I think the point of the film is that he’s not the Superman we know yet. He wants to do good, he wants to save people but he also wants to honor his father’s wishes as best he can. People focus on how his dad told him that maybe he shouldn’t help people out, but they don’t seem to think about the fact that sometimes parents are wrong. We see that Clark as a teenager wants to help people ( check out the conversation he has with his dad before the tornado hits), but we also see that his father is scared for Clark and is struggling with his kid leaving the nest. Also, Clark has been Superman for about a weekend by time Zod is punching him in the face in Metropolis. The collateral damage, the thousands of deaths, its kind of expected here, right? I mean, we’re you good at your job two days in, or we’re you still in training? The point of this film ( as well as BvS) is that the world, our world, wouldn’t accept him. I appreciate your point of view, but everything you would fix is the point of this film.

    Really interesting video. Thanks. I think that would have been a really satisfying film if they did or at least followed the themes as you said.
    I also would have like to see,
    1. Instead of that cringy scene of Clark reading Plato, Clark's Earth Dad teaching him to box ie fight with skill and self-control. Because Jonathan, who was the local boxing champion in the army, realises that untapped raw power would be devastating to the world and to other humans. So he teaches Clark to dial down the power and dial up the self-control.
    But, the drawback is when Supes is fighting Zod and the others, Superman is losing and badly because he has learnt self-control and never needed to dial up the power. But as Superman is getting pounded to almost becoming unconscious and all hope is lost, time stops (figuratively) and Superman realises these Kryptonians can take it and then he unleashes hell all the while making sure innocent people are not caught up in the punch-up.
    Zod makes a good point that he was bred for fighting and war, where did Kal-El learned his skill? "On a farm?!!!"
    Yes! On a good old fashion American family farm, that fed a hungry growing nation!, by his Dad teaching Clark how to box. Its about a Dad and son bonding and passing on life skills. It invokes a sort of good and humble and honest skill that gets the better of Zod, and puts Zod and all his expertise and puffed-up arrogance in his breeding and advanced training to shame.
    2. Truck driver bully should have been huge. I mean 'The Mountain' huge. Taller and more intimidating and LOOKING DOWN to Clark. When the truck driver head-butts Clark in the chest and Clark doesn't budge, it was underwhelming because the truck driver is a pip-squeak. Now imaging if 'The Mountain' did that and Clark doesn't budge, and a look of confused fear falls on 'The Mountain's' face because NO-ONE has ever been able to stand his ground with 'The Mountain' .
    Agree, not to damage the guy's livelihood. While the truck driver may be a jerk, doesn't mean his kids gotta starve because Dad's livelihood has been ruined. Superman is not petty or vindictive, he doesn't need to be, he was raised better than that.
    3. More screen time with Faora......because what is there not to like. She is fantastic in every way.
    4. Get rid of the school bus saving scene, that was dumb, really dumb and made no sense. Now everybody knows that a pimply faced kid just pushed a 3 ton bus out of the water., then promptly forgets all about it.
    If they had to put that silly scene in, at least have Jonathan say "I am proud of you" instead of spinning a confused and scared kid's moral compass every which way by saying "You should have left them to die"

I wasn't particularly a fan this movie when it came out and I didn't watch the Christopher Reeves movies because I believed you can make Superman interesting without making him dark or evil you can show that he has flaws and internal conflict without him brood be self serious punishing and morally conflicted

    I completely agree with your take. Overall its an ambitious movie that's trying to hard to say something but ends up saying little because it has a heavy handed approach with no levity or humour to balance the tone. Zach snyder was never really the right director for this film and you can see he's lost when trying to develop characters with consistant motivation. There's much to love also here though and certain scenes like the superman's destruction of the world engine are the best of modern cinema. I also think Henry cavill does not have the acting chops to pull the character off fully although he's very likable as superman and I would never do the comparison with Christopher reeve because it's unfair because no actor could do what he did, its a once in a lifetime moment when he was superman

    1: Being an outcast, makes you cynical. .
    2: Clark starting out exactly as he is in the comics, a symbol for hope and justice, is just boring in my opinion. It was a good call for Snyder to start him off at the bottom, slowly working his way up to who he's supposed to be in Justice League.
    3: The color grading is a bit desaturated, yes, but the flick is still the most sunny movie in the entire slate of DCEU films. So, you mean it needs more saturation? Well, you are a UA-camr, why not just saturate the movie a bit more on either your tv settings or in Adobe Premiere (making sure the skin tones aren't affected too much)
    4: This movie feels more like a modern Superman movie than any of the DC Animated Superman movies, imo. It feels intense, moving, inspiring and not weightless like most DC Animated films feel these days (I'm speaking of the way the animation moves in modern Animated DC Films, it just feels so unbelievably weightless, it barely feels as if the characters are even trying to perform a feat. Which kind of negates the entire reason behind a feat, doesn't it?)
    5: A lot of people are saying that Snyder took a too "realistic" take on Superman, with him being so cynical and stuff. But when I saw the movie in theaters and even still, I feel this was exactly what Superman needed. A serious, non ridiculous take on the character. With a no nonsense approach and a powerful message: "Would you want the weight of the world on your shoulders? Neither would Superman, but he will carry it if he must"

      Well, I read it... lol
      I really enjoyed MoS. The more I watch it I seem to enjoy it more, so after reading your reply to this video I felt like you did a good job defending it. That being said, I like the message Ben is sending in this video. In fact, he pretty much summed it up the best when comparing it to the Captain America movie. Cap was certainly black and white in conscience and morals. And I think that is the only issue really.
      I haven't kept up with Superman's character over the years. I've seen some animated movies and a few seasons of Smallville. I can't say that Superman's character has been shown to be this pure good, heart of gold, love your enemies, Christian type. The closest to that would be the Christopher Reeve Superman from 40 years ago. Now that would be a close approximation to the Captain America that Marvel has shown and what I believe Ben is describing.
      Regarding the idea of making Superman fit in a modern world, that's tough one. This is obviously something Snyder wanted and many other fans too. Personally, I don't need a superhero's character to change with the times. Character is character. They are who they are. Society, era, whatever. I think that's what Ben is saying. He is familiar with a character and wouldn't want that to change to conform to generational norms. In fact, the stronger the contrast a person's character is to the society they are in, the more interesting it becomes. And I would have to agree that if MoS would have shown Supes to be unquestionably compassionate and forgiving to mankind from beginning to end, I would have enjoyed it more as well. I think everything else was very entertaining and loved Zod's character in this incarnation. Thanks for reading!

And see a Batman in BvS questionning the potential threat it could be was also really interesting. It seems more like you don't get Man of Steel. Yes I know, the character has always been potrayed as uplifting and hopfull for humanity, however they never question what is best for Clark. This movie does. Should humanity simply save themselves? What is the purpose of a Superhero in the first place?
    In MoS the answer is: Somone who is willing to sacrifice himself for humanity no matter how difficult or hard it is, specially when it comes to choices.
    In BvS the question is extended to Does Superman cause more trouble than good? Can we trust a person who is simply saving people out of his own moral codes?
    Superman has been portrayed so many times with the answer: "just because" in these situations.
    Clark wants to save people "just because thats the right thing to do"
    Humanity loves superman "just because he is helping them"
    These movies as the question: "Why?" and "How" and explores these aspects, and finds all the shades and grayzones of these actions to see what scenarios would make more sense for these circumstances actually to take place.
    Why is humanity worth saving? How do you actualy save humanity? How do you inspire humanity? What does humanity want? Do they need a superman?
    How do you become a savour figure? What challanges would you face if you decide to save people randomly? What resposibilities do you have as s Superman? Can you ever say no, or do you always have to save somone? etc etc
    These are not easy questions, and the film never decides to give you simple answers

    Superman is complicit in killing probably thousands of people during a reckless fight in downtown Metropolis, and then we're supposed to buy his despair at the end when Zod is about to laser that one family of 3? It's so unearned it's not funny. Snyder has no clue what makes Superman a great superhero. It's laughably bad how 'cool' and jaded (to use your word) Superman was in this film. That's why Reeves was better, because he was a boy scout and actually tried to help people around him, instead of smashing his enemies around populated locations destroying literally everything. It's the opposite of what Superman should be doing.

If Snyder understood the character he would have made it clear that Superman was trying to get him away from the people of Metropolis, but he didn't. He should have yelled "take this out of the city Zod, innocent people are dying" but he didn't. Sunder was too scared to make him care, and instead wanting him to be in a huge badass city destruction fight scene.
