Lee , If you use solid carbide long series cutters for your long studding I guarantee they will not wonder i have done it for years , l had mine made with a short flute length and a long solid shank and made to whatever diameter you want .
Get yourself a spring loaded centre for the mill .... you still tap by hand but the mill fixes the top of the tap in the right spot, keeping it straight while you get it started.
Hi guys, Daihatsu engine owner here. The GTti was made from 1987 - 1992, 993cc standard producing 99BHP. It will be pushing out around 300BHP with a Garrett turbo, custom cams and a Link ECU
My dad test drove a white gtti when they first came out. Came and picked me up from school in it. Ended up following a beautiful 911 turbo near RAF Wittering. Dad belted passed it which seemed to upset the 911 driver who belted past us and tried to leave us behind. We kept on the back of the 911 until 3 figures came close and dad backed off (it was only a small car after all). The 911 driver slowed as well and waved us back past giving a nod of respect. Awesome little car but unfortunately "too powerful" for my stepmother.
Much appreciated the time you spent on the technical side and not rushing through the machining to just talk. That’s the balance I truly enjoy from your old videos. Please be as progressive as you want, just don’t stray too far from this format. Thank you Lee and Isaac
Was taught when tapping . 180 ×2 on turns in. Back off by quarter.90 degrees. And carry on as started till tread is finnished. Like nails on blackboard when one winds it home from start.😂 Mabe john will agree . He probably draw filed in his day.😂 👍.Lee.
I got the end of old school I think when grew up. Very disappointed in some of the stuff we notice.i would love to do a class of tuition on old school methods. Witch will end up dying out.simple things lads.
I notice that the engine assembly room is doing double duty as your lunch room, with camp chairs and a coffee machine. Is it time to move the coffee machine into the reception area?
I had a 1987 GTti back in the days, power to weight ratio was unbelievable for three cylinders, only thing that came close to it for putting a smile on your face was the Uno turbo ie.
been watching on an off for a couple years now. didn't even realize I wasn't subd. don't worry, fixed that real quick mates. about the end mill wondering, does make a difference if you advance the mill nice and slow taking small amounts of material where its hard? Sometimes it seems that technique works when I'm drilling or cutting. kinda inefficient and tedious tho. But I'm not doing anything near the scale you guys are. Just got some small hobby equipment, far from professional. Me and my tooling that is 😋 I wish I could do real machine work. also it would be cool to get john more involved with the channel. Id bet he has lots of incite and knowledge to share. Better get on the shop car quick, season will be over before you know it. And don't forget to get some cool track shots when you get it out
sometimes subs erm, vanish, maybe algorithm thingy , odd, you only flicking a bit just off to on...sub/no sub an old computer geek......worth a check now and again. kindest, chris.
Having lapped in wet and dry piston rings for Wellworthy in Salisbury 50 years ago, you may well encounter some of my work in vintage engines. That makes me feel old.I bet you still have some on the shelf!
Before the GTti there was a Charade Turbo which was a blow through carby version. My wife used to drive it to work. I added a good dump pipe as it had a horrible cat converter housing on the turbo which was empty for Oz. Could outdrag a Commodore 3.8V6 up to say 80MPH and ate Suzuki Swift Gts for breakfast. My son drove it and I used to wonder why the LH front tyre was wearing quickly until I hit it on an uphill LH turn that he used to drive regularly.
Yes you mentioned my car mitsubishi colt ralliart 1.5 turbo mapped to 220bhp,, baby evo only around 400 odd left in UK, fully braced with coilovers and only weighs 1080Kg... Shame nobody makes cars this small and fun anymore
With regard to the long studding alignment. You could turn up a pair of split collets to fit in the upper hole in the block, and around the shank of the tap. Enter the tap into the 'ole, tap the collets into the hole in the top of the block to hold the shank of the tap central in the 'ole, just tight enough to align the tap accurately. Tap away. Bodgers solution, may work!
it’s the drilling hole square that’s the issue, the tap will only ever follow the hole. By facing the lug flat with and endmill you have a better chance of avoiding drill wander
Years back when my brother was 18 an had an uno turbo his mate had a charade gtti and his neighbour piped up one day “ that sounds like it’s only running on 3”…… 😂😂
You're not the only one having subscriber issues on UA-cam. Other UA-camrs are complaining that the way UA-cam is doing things their viewing is down some up to 50%. Subscribers too are down also.
Would heating the block up with a blow touch where/while drilling stop the drill wandering off line? It sometimes used to happened to me, we used to call it (rightly or wrongly) hitting a carbon spot when trying to drill mild steel strap.
Bit surprised with the L200 know it will be as good, well no it will be better than new when finished but did not think Barum did a refresh on customers engines?
When I saw the title I felt less bad that this OCD project manager used to rip you re stop calls all in writing via email or signed job card!!! Even yr last video comment re less stress 😁👋🏼👌🏼
Really enjoy your channel until today. Was disappointed to hear a racial derogatory word used "japy" (10.18) when talking about the 3 cylinder Daihatsu engine. Although I'm not Japanese our new generation don't like racial call-outs. We want to get pass what our parents and grand-parents seem to think is normal.
Another great fun hatchback 3 cylinder from late 80's/early 90's is the Subaru Justy. Not turbo but had 73hp and switchable 4x4.

I have custom end mills made all the time for doing deep blind holes in specialized hydraulic pumps. Some as long as 14" X 5/8" dia.
@JamesWhite-tw4hw who would you recommend to make unique tooling like this

and a spiral tap to lift the swarf to the top instead of it collecting in the bottom of the hole
A carbide drill may help to get through any hard spots without wandering when long studding.

They went really well
Love the micrometer in the bench vice, very professional!!
when are you going to finish the white panels etc, paint the doors etc ?

Would have been a great idea if cosworth had made their engines long studded from the factory.
Rallyed a GTti in 95, just before it was replaced by the DeTomaso 4cyl. Both were wicked cars on the dirt

I was taught exactly the same method, one full turn in; half turn back, now retired and passed my sell-by date and never once broken a tap1

Question: What is the teapot used for, that is in the machine shop?? ( it is living on top of the green cabinet ),

Good practice tapping. We once had a ball bearing pop out while tapping a cast iron casting.
You can get mats which catch the dirt on your shoes. It may be a service contractor who clean and exchange them at agreed intervals.

Did i miss something? What was the problem referenced in the thumbnail? Save thousands? On what? How?
Guys. Paint the stairs and your engine stands orange...be bold.

I past my driving test in a daihatsu charade diesel three cylinder in 1985 so those engines have been around a long time

I'm sure that Charade GTTI engine was the first 1 litre 99bhp unit. Props to Diahatsu for that one.

I imagine some people watching are thinking, it's July, why is Lee wearing a hoodie?
If it’s anything like my shop - it’s a temperature Void! Can be 30 outside and my shop is still 10degress!!
Diahatsu charade haven't seen one for year 80s car
Getting pro with soo much air leaking seems conflicted ?

Can we get a link to isaacs channel, please ?
Lee. Be nice if over a couple of months each of your machines were cleaned and given a new lick of grey paint. Sweet.
why ?
Those GTtis pissed on pretty much everything off the line back in their day.......not even 1 litre! Almost 40 yesrs ago now......
